Police officers fined for breaching social distancing rules

Two police officers have been fined $1,000 each for breaching coronavirus restrictions and partying at a hotel in the Sydney CBD at the weekend.

Police found one off-duty constable, apparently intoxicated, wandering down King Street on Saturday night with a 31-year-old man after attending a party at the nearby Meriton Suites apartment.

The 27-year-old woman was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment and released the following morning, NSW Police said.

Police later discovered a 27-year-old male senior constable from the Fairfield City police area command had also attended the gathering along with two other women who were not in the police force.

All five people were handed $1,000 fines for failing to comply failing to comply with noticed direction under the Public Health Act 2010.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said social distancing was the new “way of life” until a COVID-19 vaccine was found.

“We cannot have communities who currently don’t have the virus get contaminated unintentionally because people are moving around when they shouldn't,” she said.
