OzHarvest opens Australia’s first free supermarket for people in need

Australia’s leading food rescue charity OzHarvest has opened the nation’s first “rescued food” supermarket in Sydney's suburb of Kensington.

Based on their “take what you need, give if you can” model, OzHarvest seeks to combat food wastage and feed those in need.

"It's simple; our purpose is to nourish our country in a sustainable way and raise awareness of food waste," founder and chief executive Ronni Kahn told Sydney Morning Herald. "If we can help the vulnerable with dignity then it's a win-win."

The OzHarvest supermarket only stocks “surplus” food that has been donated or would otherwise be thrown out, but is perfectly good to eat.

A range of products from fresh fruit and veggies, bread, tinned goods, frozen meals and drinks to toiletries and home products are available, but what’s in-store will vary depending on donors.

The OzHarvest supermarket is open weekdays from 10am to 2pm. It is located at 147 Anzac Parade in Kensington. Find more information at the OzHarvest website
