Top 10 health problems and how to beat them

While it’s a sobering thought, having some knowledge on the conditions most likely to cause issues as you age means that you can equip yourself with the knowledge to take action before serious problems arise. Interestingly, the leading causes of death among seniors are also at the top of the list for the population as a whole. Fortunately, the majority of these health problems are highly preventable and treatable. Here’s what you need to know.

1. Heart disease

Sadly this is the leading cause of death worldwide and heart disease encompasses all heart related conditions including arrhythmia, heart failure and heart attacks. Heart disease is linked to other conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Seeing your doctor regularly, especially if you are at increased risk is the best way to prevent heart issues long term. So if you haven’t seen the doc in a while, book in for a check up and find out what you can do to make sure your ticker is well looked after.

2. Cancer

Cancer is the second most prevalent cause of death in the senior population. As awareness increases, more and more people are detecting small changes in their bodies and seeing their doctors for advice. This is the best way to ensure an early diagnosis should there be an issue. Staying on top of your health and making sure you take preventative measures like mammograms and prostrate examinations is key. This means you need to book in for regular check ups and skin appointments. And if you have a family history of cancer, you should speak to your doctor about six-monthly check ups.

3. Stroke

While some of those who suffer a stroke go on to make a full recovery, others aren’t so lucky. This is usually due to the severity of the episode. A stroke is caused by either a clot or hemorrhage which cuts off blood flow to the brain. Being aware of the symptoms and seeking urgent medical advice as quickly as possible is the recommended cause of action for minimizing the impact of a stroke. 4. COPD

Chronic obstructive lung disease directly impacts a persons’ ability to breathe unassisted. Directly linked to smoking, quitting regardless of your age is still recommended.

5. Pneumonia

While pneumonia isn’t always deadly, it often occurs in older adults whose bodies are already fighting off other conditions like heart disease or diabetes. More prevalent in winter, yearly flu shots are recommended for all adults over 55 to minimise the risk.

6. Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, has a knock on effect in the body, leaving it more susceptible to conditions like stroke, heart disease and other circulatory issues. Managing the condition alongside a specialist dietician and GP is always the best course of action. For more info on recognising the signs of diabetes, read out article here.

7. Accidents

As you get older you’re more susceptible to accidents due to a decreased sense of balance, deterioration in eyesight and slower reflexes. Being proactive in remaining fit and healthy and ensuring that your sight and hearing is regularly tested is a great way to minimise your risk. 8. Septicemia

Septicemia refers to pathogens of infection in the blood, a condition which can cause very rapid deterioration in older adults. Seeking medical advice for infections is the primary preventative measure against septicemia.

9. Nephritis

Nephritis is an inflammation of the kidney due to various genetic, medical or lifestyle factors. When not managed correctly it can lead to renal failure.

10. Alzheimer’s

This disease is characterized by memory loss, changes in personality and eventually a complete loss of function and ability.
