Greek gyros
Gyros are a delicious Greek combination of beef and lamb wrapped in a pita, and they can easily be made at home.
Serves: 10
Ingredients:
- 0.5kg of minced beef
- 0.5kg of minced lamb
- ½ cup of bread crumbs
- 2 minced garlic cloves
- 3 teaspoons of oregano
- 2 teaspoons of onion powder
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 1 teaspoon of pepper
- Pitas, tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, red onion, lettuce, crumbled feta (to serve)
Method:
- In a large bowl, combine and mix all ingredients.
- Knead heavily for 10 minutes.
- Place meat on wax paper with a second sheet on top. Use a rolling pin to flatten into a rectangle roughly seven-cm thick. Straighten edges.
- Preheat oven to 175°C.
- Bake loaf for one hour. You can alternatively grill the loaf, turning often.
- Let cool and slice into very thin slices.
- Serve on a pita topped with tomatoes, lettuce, red onion, crumbled feta, and tzatziki sauce.
