Surprising things you can do with doors

Just when we thought we’d seen all of the different kinds of doors, someone has to go and blow our minds with things we’d never thought of before. Design firm Nendo decided to take a closer look at the humble, and usually singular-use door and think about it as a blank slate. The resulting design twists are at once beautiful, functional, and pretty damn cool.

We’ve chosen five of our favourites to take a closer look at. While these aren’t available to order just yet, you can let them serve as inspiration if you’re undertaking a little renovation project of your own.

Lamp

By employing wiring similar to that of electric locks, this door offers you a little more light for unlocking your front door.

Corner

By utilising two walls, this design turns traditional architecture upside down.

Baby

Every child’s dream is a door of their very own. But we think your four-legged friends would find this option useful as well – especially the ones who balk at using traditional doggy doors. Just leave the smaller door open for them to come and go as they please.

Hang

This door has an internal magnetic sheet so those shelves/pockets you see can be arranged in any way you want. Great for rooms short on storage space.

Kumiko

Okay, so this one’s not so much of an improvement as it is incredibly pretty to look at. Inspired by and named for a Japanese lattice technique, this door is a statement piece in and of itself.
