A young girl has been reunited with the stranger who risked his life to save her from an out-of-control house fire in Perth’s north.

Emergency services were called to the home on Mayfield Drive in Brabham at 7:30 pm on Monday, after bystanders alerted crews to a blaze.

A witness who called triple zero said they saw someone dash inside the property to save a young girl.

The person has now been revealed as 16-year-old schoolboy Jack Monaghan.

After seeing heavy plumes of smoke and hearing screaming, Jack ran from the footpath straight into the house, only to find room after room blackened by smoke.

“You could smell in the smoke and the damage it was causing, so I knew at her age especially she needed to get out of there,” Jack said.

“She was screaming ‘help help help, someone help me please’ and she was crying.

“I could hear the fear in her voice, so I knew that she needed help and no one else was around.”

Dakota Drew, 12, was inside fearing for her life.

“I would have probably not got out if he didn’t knock on the door,” she said.

“I was so surprised that he’d risk his life to save mine and try and save my dogs.”

While Jack managed to free one dog, unfortunately the other was unable to be saved.

“I told her that her and her dog needed to get out because it wasn’t safe,” Jack said.

“So, I took her and the dog out to safety.”

Jack said he attempted to save the second dog but the smoke was too thick.

“I stood back and put my shirt over my face and tried to go in and help this dog but I thought I was going to pass out,” he said.

For 15 minutes he fought the blaze with a garden hose.

“The flames were metres out of the windows, and they were exploding as you can see all the rubble that has come out,” Jack said.

Today the pair reunited at the scene of survival. Despite the brave act, Jack doesn’t consider himself a hero.

"I'd like to think anyone else that was put in my position would do the same thing," he said.
