Abducted boy found after 73 years

In a remarkable and heartwarming conclusion to a decades-long mystery, Luis Armando Albino, who was abducted 73 years ago, has been found alive and well, bringing joy and closure to a family that never gave up hope.

Albino, who was born in Puerto Rico, was just six years old when he was abducted from Jefferson Square Park in West Oakland, California, in February 1951. On that fateful day, he had been playing with his brother Roger when he was lured away. His disappearance left his family devastated, and the case went cold for decades. His mother, who passed away in 2005, carried a newspaper clipping about her son’s kidnapping in her wallet until her death, refusing to give up on her belief that he was alive.

This long-lost boy, now 79, was found after his niece, Alida Alequin, 63, took a DNA test in 2020. The results matched her with a man who turned out to be Albino, now living on the east coast of the US.

Alequin, determined to find her uncle, sought the help of the FBI and the Department of Justice to track him down. A DNA sample confirmed his identity, finally solving the mystery that had haunted their family for over seven decades.

Albino, a retired firefighter and Marine Corps veteran, had been raised by a couple who took him in as their son after his abduction. His niece said he had faint memories of being taken but had never been able to piece together the truth. Despite the astonishing discovery, Albino has chosen to keep a low profile and has declined to speak with the media.

When Alequin shared the news of the discovery, the emotion was palpable. "She always had hope that he would come home," Alequin said of her grandmother. “She always felt he was alive. She took that with her to her grave.” The family had never stopped thinking about him. Pictures of Luis Armando hung in their home, and stories of his disappearance were passed down through the years, keeping his memory alive.

Albino's reunion with his family was bittersweet. He reconnected with his brother Roger, but sadly, Roger passed away shortly afterward. Despite this, the family remains overjoyed to have found their beloved Luis after so many years of uncertainty. The missing persons report on Albino has since been removed from the California Department of Justice website, a poignant symbol of the long-awaited resolution to this case.

For Alequin and the rest of the family, finding their lost relative after 73 years was nothing short of miraculous. "The outcome of this story is what we strive for," a police spokesperson said of the rare but incredible closure that comes from never giving up on hope.

Images: Alida Alequin

The "naughty” habit that keeps 73-year-old Rod Stewart young

Although he was known for his adulterous behaviour and bad boy image, British rock icon Rod Stewart has traded his wild antics to slow down and focus on his career and family.

However, while speaking to 60 Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett, Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster, revealed the one naughty habit that keeps the 73-year-old musician young.

Lancaster described her husband of nearly 20 years as a “doting father” to their sons Alastair, 12, and Aiden, 7.

"He's a pushover," his ex-model wife told Bartlett.

"He teaches them the naughtiest things. We'll be in a restaurant and he'll put a pea on the end of a fork and bang it, see how far it gets across the restaurant.

"So, he is naughty," she said to which Stewart responded: "I will grow up one of these days."

Although Stewart has eight children born to five mothers, he is adamant that his two youngest sons will grow up in England.

"I want my kids to be brought up in this country.

"I've seen with kids being brought up in Beverly Hills, I've seen a lot of damage."

Stewart’s eldest son, Sean, 37, starred in a reality TV show showcasing spoilt rich kids in Hollywood.

"It's difficult isn't it, for kids to have high profile parents, someone like you?" asked Bartlett.

"It's a double-edged sword," Stewart replied.

"Because when they go through their school days, it's difficult for them. 'Your dad this, your dad that,' you know."

"But then the other side of it is they're always going to be financially well off, you know.

"I'm not going to give them tonnes of money, but they're going to be okay."

Sean also battled drug addiction in the past, which is a sensitive topic for Stewart and the topic of his first single ‘Didn’t I’ on his new album Blood Red Roses.

During the interview, Stewart also discussed the longevity of his marriage with his third wife, Lancaster.

"Go out, get drunk, pull a load of birds … I was that," the rock singer said.

"[Now] the soldier is back in the barracks; the banana is back in the fruit bowl ... the cue is back in the rack."

Lancaster said: “I think the truth and secret behind our longevity ... is just honesty and communication.”

Despite the success of his relationship, Stewart said that after all these years, his greatest pleasure is still performing on stage.

The musician, who has amassed earnings of more than $300 million in his career, said: “I love it. It's not only a pleasure being up there, but I can see the pleasure that I give other people and that is just, there's no drug in the world as good as that."

Are you a fan of Rod Stewart? Tell us in the comments below.

Qantas strips 73-year-old cancer survivor’s frequent flyer points

A 73-year-old woman recovering from cancer has been cruelly stripped of 150,000 Qantas frequent flyer points, after missing a crucial email during her treatment.

Dr Elizabeth Greenhalgh had been undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer when she received an email from Qantas saying her points would expire if she didn’t reactive them.

The 73-year-old missed the email completely as she recuperated and as a result the airline stripped her of 150,672, the equivalent of thousands of dollars in flights.

“I would have expected somebody who's been a frequent flyer for 16 years to be treated somewhat more flexibly and with more compassion,” said Dr Greenhalgh told Fairfax.

Dr Greenhalgh contacted Qantas and explained her plight, but if she was expecting compassion from the carrier she was sorely mistaken. Qantas denied her request to have her points reinstated, instead offering her a ‘points challenge’ that could see her earn her credits back if she accrued 2,500 in six months on a Qantas card.

As is often the case, the problem seems to have been caused by details in the fine print. The terms and conditions on Qantas’ Frequent Flyer page states points expire after the 18th consecutive month of not being used.

“While we certainly appreciate Dr Greenhalgh's very difficult circumstances, according to our terms and conditions, points are not reinstated after they've expired,” Qantas responded, according to Fairfax.

“The goodwill challenge gives Dr Greenhalgh the opportunity to re-engage with our program, which is what any member must do to keep an account active in the first place, so we're not asking for anything that's hard to achieve.”

What are your thoughts? Is this simply a case of bad luck? Or does Qantas have a responsibility to up its game, and look after a loyal customer?

Oscar-nominated actor, director and playwright Sam Shepard has died aged 73.

Jessica Lange, 68, opened up about her ex-partner of 27 years, who she has two children with – Hannah Jane Shepard, 31, and Samuel Walker Shepard, 30 – in an interview published hours before his death.

In an interview with AARP magazine, Lange spoke about her long time partner.

“I wouldn’t call Sammy easygoing and funny, but everybody has their dark side, and he always does it with a sense of humour,” said the star.

Lange and Shepard began dating after meeting on the set of their 1982 film Frances. After they went their separate ways in 2009, the Pulitzer Prize winner said of their "tumultuous” three-decade relationship.

"I mean, we have long periods of relative calm," Shepard told The Guardian in 2010.
