Man shot dead after trying to enter school

A man who was seen trying to enter a primary school where a summer class was being held has been shot dead by police.

Robert Tyler White, 32, was spotted trying to get into numerous doors at Walnut Park Elementary School in Alabama when the principal raised the alarm.

A police officer who was working as a school resource officer encountered Robert trying to break into a marked Rainbow City police car near the school.

The officer raised the alarm before he was joined by one other colleague who attempted to arrest Robert.

The man was then shot dead after resisting and trying to take the police officer’s gun.

Officials did not reveal how many times they shot Robert, whether or not he was armed, and whether he was an intruder or passerby.

Gadsden City Schools Superintendent Tony Reddick said the school resource officer sustained minor injuries and all 34 children were safe.

"Our primary concern was just making sure that someone who wasn't authorised to be in our building does not enter and our kids are safe," he told local media.
