Families of murdered campers finally break silence after Greg Lynn verdict

The families of Russell Hill and Carol Clay have issued an emotional statement following the shocking verdict in the murder trial against former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn.

On Tuesday, the jury found Lynn guilty of murdering Carol Clay in March 2020, but was found innocent on charges of murdering Russell Hill.

The jury came to their shocking split decision after seven days of deliberation following the five-week trial.

After the jury made their decision, the families of the two late campers issued an emotional statement.

“Russell Hill and Carol Clay’s families are both relieved and devastated at the verdicts in the trial of Gregory Lynn,” a joint statement from the pair’s loved ones said.

“We thank the jury for their verdict of guilty in the murder of Carol Clay. It was an extremely difficult task given that the accused destroyed so much evidence."

“The verdict of not guilty in relation to the murder Russell Hill is devastating. There was not enough evidence to be sure of how he died.”

The families said they understood the prosecution had an “enormous job putting a case together with limited evidence”.

“The accused was the only person who saw and experienced what happened,” loved one said.

“He was also the only person who emerged alive.”

The statement thanked Victoria Police and its missing persons squad for their hard work in the case, volunteers who spent weeks searching for their loved ones, and Hill and Clay’s friends and family for their “support throughout this harrowing experience”.

“We are heartbroken at the loss of our loved ones. It will take time to absorb the verdicts, put this behind us and set about healing and getting on with our lives,” the family said.

Victoria police assistant commissioner Martin O’Brien said the Hill and Clay families had endured a difficult four years.

“Their courage and resilience in the face of their grief, amidst enormous public attention, has been nothing short of extraordinary,” O’Brien said.

“We will continue to support them in every way possible following this decision.”

Throughout the trial, Lynn maintained his innocence, saying he did not kill the two campers, but admitted to destroying their bodies and the crime scene.

However, both prosecutors said he killed both of the campers intentionally and then tried to cover up his crimes.

Following the jury's verdict on Tuesday, Lynn was taken back to prison where he awaits his sentence.

"I had better make sure I don’t have a heart attack!": Allison Langdon stuns pensioners on the verge of bankruptcy

Left with a $25,000 legal bill after taking their retirement village to court over a broken air conditioning unit and losing the case, pensioners Walter and Carola Sadlo were on the verge of bankruptcy.

In a heartwarming segment, Allison Langdon told the Sadlo’s that A Current Affair viewers had banded together to bail them out of their financial debt.

Walter and Carola’s legal battle began in 2018 when their air conditioning unit broke. The couple had paid an extra $1,375 for air conditioning but maintenance wasn’t covered by the retirement village. Walter said he believed it would be covered, so he tried to fight it in the New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT).

After taking the retirement village to court and losing the case, the couple were issued with a bankruptcy notice just two days before Christmas. “I could not believe that somebody could be so vicious and cruel,” Walter said.

The couple had also sacrificed their savings to fight the case; $15,000 that Carola inherited from her mother. With this gone, they feared losing their home.

Langdon then stunned the couple by telling them, “our viewers have paid your debt.”

"I normally don't get emotional. I had better make sure I don't have a heart attack!" Walter said.

Not only was their $25,000 legal bill covered, but viewers chipped in almost enough to cover the $15,000 they had to put toward their bill.

"Hopefully, there will be village operators who see this story and will show a bit more heart," Walter said.

Image: A Current Affair

Viewers respond to Allison Langdon's big debut

Allison Langdon has been praised following her debut in the A Current Affair hosting chair, after a moving display of empathy towards a survivor of domestic abuse.

In Ally’s debut interview, she sat down with Kimbarlie O’Reilly, who was abused by her ex-boyfriend Jake Frecker, who has just been released from jail after serving four years of a six year sentence.

“A thousand different things go through my head about the next few years and what’s going to happen. Like, how long do I have left to live,” Ms O’Reilly told Langdon about the depth of her fear of what her ex might be capable of.

Ms O’Reilly then detailed the abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-partner, explaining how she would be locked outside of her house for hours at a time, verbally berated and physically assaulted.

“I’m still struggling every day. I have panic attacks; I have nightmares; I don’t sleep; I have anxiety and PTSD and I didn’t have any of this before,” Ms O’Reilly told Langdon.

"How long do I have left to live?"

TONIGHT on A Current Affair, Ally Langdon sits down with a woman who is lucky to be alive after being beaten by her then-boyfriend.#9ACA | Watch LIVE 7pm pic.twitter.com/gBxPP8xnN3

— A Current Affair (@ACurrentAffair9) January 30, 2023

“He’ll be angry at me for what’s happened and it’ll be my fault still. And he won’t be satisfied until he gets his revenge.”

Ally’s next question proved too much for Ms O’Reilly, as she asked, “Do you feel safe right now?”

“No. Not at all. Not at all. Sorry,” said Ms O’Reilly, welling up.

Langdon then comforted Ms O’Reilly. “Don’t apologise. This is really hard to talk about,” she said.

“Do you need a moment?” said Langdon, leaning into Ms O’Reilly and helping her off the set.

“You’re strong; you’re brave, and you’re a fighter,” said Langdon when Ms O’Reilly returned.

“Yeah, I’m definitely my parents’ daughter,” replied Ms O’Reilly.

“As hard as it is, I’m never gonna stop. I have this responsibility to talk, to be loud, and shine a light on the injustice on women.”

Ally’s compassion won her praise online, with viewers in awe of her empathy and kindness towards Ms O’Reilly.

One viewer wrote online, “What a debut for Ally Langdon [A Current Affair] ontonight. Leading with the issue of domestic violence & giving it the spotlight it needs.”

“More to come tomorrow night too…. If this is the direction she is taking the show, I reckon I might watch more often.”

Another viewer said, “Stellar Job tonight Ally.. Karl Stefanovic’s warm words for Allison Langdon

Former Today host Allison “Ally” Langdon returned to the show this morning to hear her former co-host Karl Stefanovic’s well wishes for her debut with A Current Affair.

“I'm so looking forward to tonight,” Ally confessed of her Monday night debut, “we've been on the road shooting stories for the past couple of weeks which is really fun, but to be honest I have a few nerves about tonight.”

The duo were together at the helm of the Today desk for three years before Ally’s departure from the show in late 2022. Needless to say, Karl was in a good position to share his take on how Ally might fare in her new role, telling her, “you're an absolute machine and we can't wait to see you tonight.”

While Karl and his new co-host, Sarah Abo, showered Allison in their support, Karl also took the opportunity to make a joke about the change in Ally’s schedule, teasing, “I know it's a bit of a shift for you, working at night - you've always been a little lazy.”

"How is it going to be working at 7pm at night,” he asked, “what are you doing with the kids?"

While Allison brushed off that particular line of questioning, she did confess that the new start time was not quite what she’d expected, with a little help from her children Mack James and Scout Heather.

“I thought how good I'm going to sleep in these days,” she told Karl and Sarah, “it's not a 3am wake-up call, but the kids are still up at 5:30am.”

She went on to share that because of the continued early wake up times, she’s been able to catch the show, and sung Sarah’s praises for her work as a Today host.

"Sarah, you're so amazing in that chair,” she told her, “honestly, it's been lovely to watch. You look so comfortable and you've managed to wrangle in that bloke beside you pretty well. It's been lovely sitting at home watching."

Allison is no stranger to encouragement in the industry, having revealed how her A Current Affair predecessor Tracy Grimshaw spoke to her before Tracy’s final show after 17 years as host.

“She said, ‘just be yourself, Ally, be yourself, and follow what you want to follow',” Allison told The Herald Sun.

“She told me to listen to the ACA audience,” she added, before sharing Tracy’s advice to find her own voice and to be authentic, to “be real and be you.”

Images: Getty

Police finally reveal motive behind murder of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay

Police have alleged that the two secret lover campers, Russel Hill and Carol Clay, were "childhood sweethearts" who had started their affair 15 years ago.

In a summary of the case against Gregory Lynn, who allegedly killed the pair, police believe that Mr Hill and Ms Clay had rekindled their romance 15 years prior, and would go on regular camping trips to "spend time together".

The pair allegedly drifted apart and had children with other partners, according to the documents provided to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Mr Hill was married to another woman for 51 years, and according to the police facts provided to the court, his wife believed that he had gone camping alone.

“Those close to them believe that they kept their relationship a secret to spare Hill’s family from distress,” the police statement read.

The pair had gone camping in Wonnangatta Valley on March 19 2020, and they vanished sometime after 6 pm the next day.

Police alleged that Mr Lynn killed the pair after an altercation over a drone, with Mr Hill fatally stabbed and Ms Clay shot in the head.

Police also believed that he returned to the area in May and November 2020 to try and "destroy" evidence by setting the pair's remains on fire.

Their bodies were buried around 40km from the campsite in Dargo on November 2021.

Mr Lynn was in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this week for a committal hearing to decide whether there is enough evidence for him to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

Images: Victoria Police

Today Show host fuming after featuring in Meghan Markle’s podcast without permission

Allison Langdon has been left fuming after her voice during a Today Show segment was used on Meghan Markle’s podcast.

The Duchess of Sussex has released a few episodes of Archetypes in which she discusses various topics and her experiences since marrying Prince Harry.

In the latest episode The Stigma of the Singleton, Meghan played part of an old interview she had with fellow actor Mindy Kaling where she spoke about the sexism reporting she endured when she and Prince Harry started dating.

“When I started dating my husband, and we became engaged, everyone was just like, ‘Oh my god, you’re so lucky, he chose you,” the Duchess of Sussex is heard saying before it cuts to Ally’s comment.

“The happy couple has enchanted the world with their real-life fairytale,” Ally said.

“And at a certain point, after you hear it a million times over, you’re like, ‘Well I chose him too!’” a fed up Meghan says.

She then goes on to say that she is grateful to have Prince Harry by her side who was counteracting the comments.

“They’ve got it all wrong. I’m the lucky one because you chose me,” she claims Prince Harry said.

“But it is gendered and it’s archetyped and stereotyped that you’re so lucky, and it just feeds into this idea that you’re waiting for someone to tell you that you’re good enough, as opposed to knowing that you’re good enough on your own.”

When Ally found out that she was featured in the new episode she said she was listening to it with “steam out of my ears”.

“What part of that was saying, Harry (chose you)... oh, my gosh,” a furious Ally told co-host Karl Stefanovic.

“Whatever side of the fence Ally is on in this story, she gets smashed by Meghan,” Karl responds.

“All I know is that I had a lot of mates who liked Meghan for a long time and none of them do anymore,” Ally finished, explaining that the episode made her head “explode”.

The Duchess of Sussex has caused quite a stir with her podcast Archetypes and is being called out by several big names around the world.

Image: Facebook/Spotify

The dramatic moment Karl stormed off set

Karl Stefanovic walked off the set of The Today Show after being insulted by his co-host Allison Langdon.

The pair were discussing Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation case in which Depp’s sister Depp’s sister Christi Dembrowski said Heard called the actor “old and fat”.

Karl was beginning to say “Being called a fat old man is like…” before Allison jumped in and bluntly told him: “You’re not old”.

“Or fat! I said all of them! Old or fat!”

Karl stood up from the couch and said he was not accepting these comments from Allison before walking off set.

“She's fat-shaming! She's fat-shaming again, Australia! I'm going on a diet.”

Allison sat in disbelief as Karl walked off, leaving her to wrap up the show.

“I was giving you a compliment,” she called out to Karl.

However, it did not stop there with Karl taking it a step further and involving Channel Nine publicist Adrian Motte telling him: “That’s disgusting isn’t it?”

Allison defended herself, saying she was not insulting Karl.

“I basically called you young, thin and handsome.”

“I really try. My feelings get hurt!” Karl yelled back.

“He's so sensitive! I just called him thin, handsome, and young. That's what I just said.

“I deal with this every day. Anthony Albanese caught in stand-off over budget promises

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese was involved in an intense standoff on live morning television between Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon.

Both Today Show co-hosts asked Mr Albanese five times whether Aussies would be paying more tax under his election.

The Labor opposition leader however refused to give a straight answer and repeatedly resorted back to his budget response.

'You won't be increasing taxes to pay back debt?' Karl asked.

“We’ve said that the tax we’re looking at is multinational tax evasion. We’ll have more detail about that during the election campaign.

Mr Albanese went on to speak about the Liberal government who have “more rorts, more waste” and how they were spending taxpayer’s money.

Karl then asked the same question again to which he responded: “Look, what we're doing is two things, Karl,”

“One is that we'll stop the waste and rorts, the other thing is we have a plan for growth through our national reconstruction fund.

“Our climate change reconstruction fund. Our climate change policy will create 604,000 new jobs by 2030.”

Allison interrupted asking Mr Albanese: “But you won't increase taxes?”

“Yeah we have made it very clear, we have all our policies out there for all to see, for all to see.

“And we have a plan for growth,” Mr Albanese continued before being interrupted by Karl.

“Albo, Albo, I don't know that you're answering the question,” he pointed out.

'Yes, I am,' Mr Albanese replied.

Karl said it was a simple “yes or no” question before asking him for the fifth time whether he would be increasing taxes.

“We will be announcing our measure on multinational tax evasion. That is the announcement we have made.

“We're not doing anything on the other measures that we've put forward during the last election campaign. All of our policies are fully costed and released.”

The Labor Party delivered their budget response on Thursday night.

Mr Albanese pledged to spend an extra $2.5 billion for aged care which would see an increase in wages for workers and ensuring all residential aged care facilities to have a registered nurse on site at all hours.

Other areas of strong focus for the opposition is to take pressure off the cost of living by making child care and power bills cheaper, along with an economy with stronger wages and more secure work.

'After all the challenges and the sacrifices made during the pandemic, floods, and bushfires, Australians need and deserve a better Budget for a better future,' Mr Albanese said.

'A future where no one is held back, and no one is left behind.'

'Labor has a real plan for growth and prosperity – a plan to get incomes rising and costs under control.'

Other plans include cheaper energy, more manufacturing and training, fee-free TAFE places and renewed focus on Medicare.

Image: Today Show

After hosting Today together for two years, Allison Langdon is putting her foot down after a request from Karl Stefanovic.

Karl approached Allison and asked if he could host the annual Carols by Candlelight event with her, to which she said no.

Speaking with Woman's Day, Allison explained why he won't be making an appearance.

“I just told him no,” she admitted.

“He was desperate to co-host but David Campbell and I have such amazing singing voices - a real talent that unfortunately Karl lacks!”

Despite Karl's forced absence, Allison said she is very excited to have a live audience at Carols this year, after last year's crowd was unable to be present due to the pandemic.

“I can't wait to be surrounded by people, particularly the little kids, singing together at the top of our lungs farewelling a year that has been pretty [tough] on a lot of people,” she added.

“I can't wait to celebrate with our families and loved ones, all the things we are grateful for.”

The 84th annual event will see a host of Australian musicians take to the stage to celebrate the festive season with fan-favourite Christmas carols.

Performers including Dami Im, Casey Donovan, Lucy Durack and Isaiah Firebrace will belt out their favourite festive tunes, before the cast of the musicals Hamilton, Moulin Rouge and Frozen will also take to the stage.

Carols by Candlelight will air on Nine at 8:00pm on December 24th.

Search for missing campers unearths tragic allegations

New evidence suggests that the bodies believed to be that of missing campers Carol Clay and Russell Hill may have allegedly been burned before they were buried.

According to reports from the Herald Sun, the pair of bodies allegedly may have been set on fire within metres of where the remains were found in dense bushland in the remote area of East Gippsland in Victoria.

On November 30th, human remains were uncovered in the Grants Historical Area near the remote town of Dargo, 320km northeast of Melbourne.

The discovery was made almost two years after Carol and Russell went missing.

The remains have yet to be formally identified, with DNA testing results expected to take some time.

Detectives from the missing persons squad combed through the scene meticulously last week, using the same methods and relying on the same arson chemist who originally examined Mr Hill and Ms Clay’s campsite when they disappeared in 2020.

Police are currently waiting for the forensic testing results of a Nissan Patrol vehicle that was recently seized during the investigation.

Victoria Police are also searching for a trailer that was resold on Gumtree, which may assist the investigation.

Russell Hill and Carol Clay were last heard from on March 20th 2020 when they embarked on their camping trip.

Days later, campers found Russell's car that had been destroyed by fire near the campsite.

A 55-year-old Caroline Springs man, Greg Lynn, has been charged with two counts of murder.

Mr Lynn remains in police custody and is expected to face court on May 31th next year.

BREAKING: Bodies found in search for missing Vic campers

Police searching for the remains of missing Victorian campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay have found human remains in bushland near Dargo, in Victoria’s High Country.

They are yet to be formally identified.

Last week, police had arrested a 55-year-old Caroline Springs man and were interviewing him in relation to the pair’s disappearance, although no formal charges had been laid. The man, revealed to be Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn, was stood down following his arrest.

The pair, who it has been revealed were having an affair, were last seen at a remote Wonnangatta campsite on March 20 last year. Their campsite at Dry River Creek Track was discovered burnt out, and Hill’s abandoned Toyota Landcruiser was located nearby.
Ms Clay’s sister Jill revealed the relationship to 60 Minutes, saying, “They had to keep it secret, and in some ways, I feel that that’s why they went to such a remote place.” Neither Mr Hill’s wife nor his daughters were aware of the relationship between him and Ms Clay, with his daughters telling the program, “It was a shock when the police mentioned something about, do we know a Carol? But that was the first we knew about it.

“We didn’t know anything about him and Carol being together.”

Authorities revealed that charred camping chairs, a burnt-out battery, and a bucket used for Hill’s gas canister were located inside the pair’s tent, which had also been burnt. They believe it’s unlikely that these items would have been put there by the missing pair. “It certainly builds that picture for us that potentially someone was trying to cover their tracks,” Victoria Police Detective Inspector Andrew Stampers told 60 Minutes.

Image: Victoria Police

Huge new clue in search for missing campers

New clues have emerged in the case of missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay in relation to a specific vehicle police believe could crack the case.

Mr Hill, 74, and Ms Clay, 73, disappeared while camping in Wonnangatta Valley, Victoria, in March 2020.

Last week, police released information about a vehicle spotted near the campsite around the time of the pair’s disappearance that could be vital in their investigations. According to 7NEWS, more details are now known about the vehicle.

Image: 7NEWS

The car is a blue ‘GU’ model Nissan Patrol wagon, and the five-door car is a Series 1 which would have been built between 1997 and 2001.

But the biggest clue to help narrow down the search is that the car has an awning on one side with the name “KINGS” on it, as well as a PVC water pipe attached to the driver’s side.

Image: 7NEWS

Police have said they want to speak to the driver or anyone who may have seen the vehicle at the time.

“We can’t eliminate this vehicle. The person driving this vehicle is a person of interest,” Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said last week.

Police also released images of charred items that were found inside the campers’ burnt-out tent, with authorities believing it unlikely that they would have put the items there.

“The only reason we can assume that Russell didn’t camp in the best spot, was potentially there was somebody already there,” Detective Stamper said.

“There’s been some sort of argument and maybe it’s escalated from there.

“It’s a theory, but it’s probably the best theory we’ve got at the moment.”

Image: Victoria Police
