Former Today Show host's surprise return

It's been almost two months since Brooke Boney wrapped up her final Today Show, and bid farewell to viewers after five years on the show to further her studies at Oxford University in the UK.

The former news and entertainment presenter made a surprise return to the Today show on Thursday morning, sharing updates on her latest adventure to hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo.

Since settling in London, she was a guest at a reception held by none other than King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The royals hosted a luncheon for Commonwealth countries at St James Palace, and the event was attended by other high-profile Aussies such as Cate Blanchett and Kathy Lette.

"It was so wonderful, you go there and the whole experience is pretty surreal," the proud Gamilaroi Gomeroi woman told the Today hosts.

"And I think especially as an Aboriginal person, it's like, oh how do I engage with this?' You know, it's a very complicated history between us and the royals but I thought, I'd rather be someone who's in the room and having conversations, than someone who's not."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kathy Lette (@kathy.lette)

She also admitted that she was curious to see the inside of the palace, and while her brush with royalty was exciting, there was another guest at the event she was equally excited to see.

"Do you know who else was there? Today show star's teary farewell

Brooke Boney has wrapped up her final Today Show before she embarks on a new adventure overseas.

The proud Gamilaroi Gomeroi woman, who has read the news on the Channel Nine morning show for five years, was surrounded by her colleagues as they reflected on her time with the program.

"I just spent a month at the Olympics. I've been to the Oscars, all around the world to do things that most people don't get to do," Brooke said.

"As a young person, I didn't see much of a future for myself beyond what my little imagination could conjure up and because of the labour of my mum and my grandparents, who are back in Musswellbrook, it wasn't as bleak as it could have been."

Her co-hosts then wished her all best, while sharing memories from the last five years and expressing their love for the presenter.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Why is the water so salty?" and other priceless questions from clueless tourists

In the heart of the stunning intersection where the Daintree Rainforest kisses the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll find Ocean Safari – a top-notch, eco-certified tour company. Brooke Nikola, one of their delightful tour guides, has been guiding wide-eyed adventurers through this paradise for years. With thousands of tourists coming from all corners of the globe, she’s accumulated a treasure trove of amusing anecdotes that could rival the size of the reef itself.

Let’s dive right into the deep end with some classic moments per news.com.au. One sunny day, while marvelling at the endless blue expanse, a curious tourist asked Brooke, “Why does the water taste so salty?”

“Well, it’s the ocean,” Brooke gently reminded them. Ah, the wonders of seawater – still a mystery to some.

Then there was the time aboard the Ocean Safari vessel, cruising serenely over the waves, when a perplexed guest inquired, “How far above sea level are we?”

And who could forget the would-be scientist who attempted to bottle the stunning blue ocean water, only to be baffled when it turned out clear. We can only imagine Brooke explaining the tricky science of light refraction and how the ocean's mesmerising blue doesn't quite fit into a bottle. No doubt their holiday turned into an impromptu science lesson.

The complaints Brooke hears are just as priceless. One guest, dripping after a snorkelling session, grumbled, “Ugh, snorkelling makes me so wet.”

Then there was the revelation about the rainforest. As rain drizzled through the lush canopy, a bewildered tourist remarked, “It’s so rainy in the rainforest!” Who knew that rain would be part of the rainforest experience? Certainly not that guest!

Geography can be tricky, especially in a place as uniquely named as Cape Tribulation. As tourists boarded the Ocean Safari vessel from Cape Tribulation beach, one asked where the Daintree Rainforest was – oblivious to the verdant scenery they had driven through for the past hour. Brooke had to kindly point out that they had been in it this whole time.

Another classic came from a guest who thought Cape Tribulation was an island. They earnestly asked, “So, how big is the whole island?” To which Brooke replied, “It’s pretty big. So big, in fact, it’s known as Australia!”

Through all of these delightful moments, no doubt Brooke remained a fountain of patience and good humour. So, next time you find yourself at Cape Tribulation, remember to bring your sense of wonder – and a good laugh. Because as Brooke can tell you, the Great Barrier Reef is full of surprises, both above and below the water!

Images: Ocean Safari / Instagram

Shane Warne's daughter's candid admission

Shane Warne's daughter, Brooke, has opened up about how her family has coped with the devastating loss, one year after the cricket legend's passing.

The 24-year-old candidly told Stellar Magazine that, despite missing him deeply, her family, including her siblings Jackson and Summer, as well as her mother Simone Callinan, have remained close-knit in the wake of the tragedy.

"As a family, we've always stuck together. We've always had each other's backs. We're going okay," she told the publication.

"Obviously, I miss him and think about him every second – that's never going to change," she continued.

"I think we just learn to accept life, that this is our life now, and do the best by him and make him proud... and be positive and enjoy everything. You don't know what's going to happen.

"We just had to deal with what comes our way. We do it together, and that's the important thing," she concluded.

This comes just days after loved ones took to social media to honour the legendary cricketer on what would've been his 54th birthday.

Brooke took to Instagram stories to share a throwback photo of herself and her dad.

"Your day King, Happy birthday dad," she captioned the photo posted on Wednesday the 13th with a love heart.

Another photo showed her indulging in a few of her dad's favourite snacks including potato scallops, a donut, lollies and a bag of Musk sticks.

"Birthday lunch for dad. All his faves," she captioned.

Shane's son, Jackson also took to Instagram to honour his late dad, with a video about how he planned to mark the day.

“Today would have been dad’s 54th birthday – happy birthday dad,” he said in the clip.

“And I thought instead of being sad or posting a story in black and white with a big caption with things that are quite obvious, I’m going to do what dad would have wanted me to do which is be happy and do things that make me happy."

He then listed three things that he used to do with his dad including getting Maccas, watching Two and a Half Men, and playing roulette.

“Roulette is on par for me and dad with poker and we just loved cheering on a 23 for a spin. So we’ll go downstairs and see if we can hit a 23. Happy birthday dad," he concluded his video.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jackson Warne (@jacksonwarne18)

Shane's younger daughter Summer honoured her late dad with another throwback picture posted on Instagram stories with the caption: "Happy Birthday Dad. Today Show host's honest dating life admission

Brooke Boney has made an honest admission about her dating life live on-air.

The Today Show entertainment reporter was giving her showbiz report on Thursday morning, which featured a clip of an interview with Jennifer Aniston speaking about her own dating struggles on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The Friends actress was discussing her long-running friendship with fellow movie star Adam Sandler, claiming he often weighs into her love life with the question, “What are you doing!?”, in reference to unsuitable partners.

Brooke added her own commentary to Aniston's admission, saying, “To be fair, my friends also sometimes say that to me,” she said, before turning to Today host Karl Stefanovic, who echoed Aniston’s comment, “What are you doing!?”

“I know, you’ve said that [to me] a couple of times Karlos,” she added, laughing.

Boney's admission was surprising for many viewers, as she is notoriously protective of her private life.

In March 2020, she revealed she has a boyfriend who was living in the UK, though never revealed his identity to her followers on social media.

Later the same year, it was evident the pair had gone their separate ways after Boney confirmed she was single again in an ambush segment featuring her mother, Leonie, who appeared on Today talking about how she wanted her daughter to date a “decent bloke”.

Following her break-up, which she revealed was several years long, Brooke penned an emotional column for the Sydney Morning Herald in which she detailed the decision to freeze her eggs.

“There’s still the stigma of being single in your 30s, with people assuming you can’t find love. Instead, maybe the decision to freeze eggs should be seen through the prism of its more likely causes: prioritising career; making decisions based on values; waiting for the right person; or simply leaving options open,” Boney wrote.

Little girl praised for shielding baby brother for 36 hours in quake

A seven-year-old girl and her younger brother have been rescued after a 7.8 magnitude quake in southeast Turkey and northern Syria destroyed their home and trapped them beneath tonnes of heavy concrete.

Mariam and Ilaaf, along with the rest of their family, were asleep at home in Besnaya-Bseineh, a small village in Haram, Syria, when the Monday quake occurred. It is believed the siblings were confined in the debris for 36 gruelling hours before rescuers located them.

Footage has emerged of the moment the children were found, and has revealed that despite the horrors of their situation, Mariam had one priority - protecting her little brother. Their father has since informed reporters that Illaf’s name is an Islamic one meaning ‘protection’.

With an arm sheltering his head and covering his face from the dust and debris, Mariam can be seen stroking Ilaaf’s hair in what some believe to be the remains of their bed. A concrete slab lies precariously above them, pinning the two to the spot.

“Get me out of here,” Mariam pleads to the rescuers in the now viral clip, “I’ll do anything for you.”

To the relief of millions, the children were pulled safely from the scene of the disaster, and transferred to hospital to receive medical treatment.

While under the rubble of her collapsed home this beautiful 7yr old Syrian girl has her hand over her little brothers head to protect him.
Brave soul
They both made it out ok. pic.twitter.com/GrffWBGd1C

— Vlogging Northwestern Syria (@timtams83) February 7, 2023

UN representative Mohamad Safa took to Twitter to urge people to “share positivity” in light of the rescue. With a death toll in the thousands - a number only predicted to rise - and aid a desperate need, the siblings’ story has become a moment of bittersweet brightness in a time of tragedy.

Around the world, people who heard their story have taken to social media to praise Mariam for her bravery, hailing her as a hero for her actions and love in a time of disaster.

“Oh bless her,” tweeted one, “children's love and resilience makes me weep.”

“Miracles happen. What a great big sister. Lovingly protective under such stressful circumstances,” wrote another. “Hope for all those still trapped. Respect for all the rescuers working tirelessly.”

Their father, Mustafa Zuhir Al-Sayed, has confirmed that their family - he, his wife, and their three children - were asleep when it all happened.

“We felt the ground shaking,” he said, “and rubble began falling over our heads, and we stayed two days under the rubble. We went through, a feeling, a feeling I hope no one has to feel.”

“People heard us,” he explained, after recounting how he and his family prayed for someone to find them, “and we were rescued – me, my wife and the children. Thank God, we are all alive and we thank those who rescued us.”

Images: Twitter

Why Hugh Jackman wanted to "shield" his kids from his difficult upbringing

Hugh Jackman has always known the day would come when he would have to explain his difficult history with his parents to his own kids.

The 54-year-old actor, who has long spoken about his challenging childhood, is now wrestling with these awkward conversations, as his role in the the new film The Son has brought up past memories.

Hugh has previously said that his mother abandoned him as a child, which he later understood was because she suffered a mental-health crisis at the time, and his dad recently died after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

"Hugh has seen the best and worst of the human condition, and for a long time, he wanted to shield his kids from that," a source told Woman's Day.

But now, their adopted children Oscar, 22, and Ava, 17, are learning the truth, even if Hugh's wife Deborra-Lee Furness has her own reservations.

Speaking to the media ahead of the premiere of The Son, Hugh says he felt compelled to prepare Oscar and Ava for the film's plot, which tells the story of a complicated family that tries to piece itself back together after falling apart – a story eerily similar to Hugh's own.

"It was very important that I talk to them about what it was about, what it meant to me, and why I was doing it," he says.

"I took them with me to see it and we had a long conversation. What I find amazing is the generation of 22 to 17-year-olds are totally fine having these conversations. It's more my generation that is a little more sheepish and shy around it."

Whoopi weighs in on Rebel Wilson furore

Whoopi Goldberg has come out swinging against the Sydney Morning Herald columnist who was accused of threatening to expose Rebel Wilson’s relationship.

The Aussie actress revealed that she is in a relationship with fashion designer Ramona Agruma on Instagram by sharing a smiling selfie.

However, behind those wide smiles was something more sinister - a deadline of exposing her relationship before she was even ready.

Andrew Hornery, the journalist who penned the piece about Rebel’s relationship, was called out for his “threatening email” which gave the actress a deadline.

This has not sat well with many, with the news reaching as far as the US and now renowned Hollywood actress Whoopi Goldberg, has weighed in.

“There’s a lot of speculation that (Wilson came out) to get ahead of a tabloid story in the Sydney Morning Herald about her relationship. Now, the man who wrote it even apologised, saying it was ‘never his intention to “out” her’ … Well, you know that’s not true, because if it wasn’t your intention you wouldn’t have done it,” Whoopi said on The View alongside other panelists.

“If you didn’t want to do it, you shouldn’t have done it – you knew exactly what you were doing.

“It seems these are the only moves people have to get in front of a story before it’s all over social media or every other media … and there’s got to be a better way to do it."

CELEBRITIES DISCLOSING NEWS ON THEIR TERMS? It’s insane.”

Hornery came out and apologised for the article which has since been replaced with the apology.

He explained how the situation unfolded and didn’t realise how bad it was after news broke about his deadline which was taken as a threat by many.

“At 9.27am last Thursday I wrote: ‘Good morning. I am a journalist from The Sydney Morning Herald and I was hoping I could get a comment from Rebel regarding her new relationship,” Hornery said.

“While I realise Rebel’s partner has not been mentioned as yet, I have several sources who have confirmed their status and I have enough detail to publish.

“However, in the interests of transparency and fairness, before publishing I am reaching out to Rebel to see if she will engage in what I believe is a happy and unexpected news story for her, especially given the recent Pride celebrations.

“My deadline is Friday, 1pm Sydney-time. But I understand why my email has been seen as a threat. The framing of it was a mistake.

“The Herald and I will approach things differently from now on to make sure we always take into consideration the extra layer of complexities people face when it comes to their sexuality.”

Sydney Morning Herald editor Bevan Shields also came in defence of his employee by saying that the same process would have happened had Rebel been with a man.

“Our weekly Private Sydney celebrity column last week asked Wilson if she wished to comment about her new partner. We would have asked the same questions had Wilson’s new partner been a man,” he wrote.

“To say that the Herald ‘outed’ Wilson is wrong.

“Like other mastheads do every day, we simply asked questions and as standard practice included a deadline for a response.”

Shields’ response however was also slammed by fellow panelist Sunny Hostin who said that they “knew it was wrong” after pulling the story down.

“When his editor came out and said, ‘no, no, we would have done this with anyone, we would have done this if she was dating a man, there’s nothing wrong with it’ … Then a day later, they pulled the column, so they knew it was wrong,” she said.

“You have to understand, kids that come out to their families, there’s a lot of suicides that happen, they generally get a 50 per cent negative reaction when they come out. these are stats that you can easily look up. I’m just really surprised that a journalist would do this, it’s horrible.”

Images: Instagram/Twitter

Two Today Show hosts test positive for Covid-19

Two hosts of The Today Show have tested positive for Covid-19.

Ally Langdon and Brooke Boney both returned a positive result for the virus, as well as "half the behind the scenes people" at Today.

Karl Stefanovic confirmed the news on air with stand in co-host Sarah Abo, saying both women were in isolation.

"Sarah is in for Ally after testing positive for COVID-19," Karl said this morning.

"Brooke has also come down with COVID-19. Both are in isolation and we will see them some time next week."

Karl went on to joke that he had managed to avoid the virus due to his overall health and fitness.

"Interestingly, those of us who are elite athletes... are fine," he said with a smile.

Karl and the rest of his immediate family suffered the effects of Covid over the Christmas break and into January, with his daughters Ava and Harper coming down with it first, and he and Jasmine shortly after.

"We were most worried about little Harper," Karl said at the time.

"She is only 18 months old and also my daughter Ava - they had it in a quite severe way initially but then they got over it really quickly, and then Jaz and I both got it and I was much worse."

Karl said while he was physically unwell for three or four days, it is the psychological impact that hits you the hardest.

"It started out and it feels like a bad cold, and it starts in the throat, then it goes to the lungs," he said.

"I'm clear now, but the residual effects of it are there.

"It keeps on going on and on - dealing with it psychologically is the hardest thing I reckon."

"That one word might make a difference"

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced she believes the national anthem should be changed to better reflect Australia’s Indigenous history.

Ms Berejiklian has called for a change to the lyrics of the anthem so it declares “we are one and free” instead of “we are young and free”.

Her comments follow after Indigenous advocate and TV personality Brooke Boney says she’s “sick of the discussions” and that it is time to change the lyrics of the Australian national anthem to better acknowledge First Nations people.

Boney, a Gamilaroi woman, informed Nine’s Today show on Wednesday morning that the current lyrics didn’t honour Indigenous Australians enough.

“I get sick of having these discussions and people throw their toys out of the cot and we can’t have a mature and sensible reaction to our future as a nation,” she said.

“We’re not young and free when the government refuses to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14.

“We are not young and free when every kid in a Northern Territory juvenile facility is black.

“It doesn’t pay tribute to the fact that this is the home – all of us are a part of this incredible legacy of the oldest continuous culture of anywhere in the world. Does a face shield protect against COVID-19? We’re not sure — so a mask is probably a safer bet for now

For several weeks, Victorians have been required to wear a face covering when they leave home. And while we now have a clearer path out of lockdown, it’s likely masks will be around for a while.

Meanwhile, people in other states with outbreaks have been encouraged to wear masks, and some people are simply choosing to wear one as a precaution.

But some people in the community, instead of opting for a traditional mask, are instead wearing a face shield.

This might offer some degree of protection — but it’s probably not as good as a mask in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Get your coronavirus updates from health experts.

Get newsletter

What is a face shield?

A face shield is a film made from plastic or other transparent material designed to be worn like a visor. It’s attached using a band that goes around the top of your head.

Think of a visor a welder wears to protect themselves from sparks and injury. Health-care workers use face shields to block bodily fluids from coming into contact with their face, and potentially causing infection.

It’s likely many people are choosing face shields during COVID-19 because they’re experiencing discomfort wearing a mask — whether glasses fogging up, irritation around the ears, or just that extra layer.

The term “face covering”, as per the Victorian government’s guidelines, is notably vague. It can include a face mask, a face shield, or a scarf or bandana.

The department of health does however recommend a mask over a face shield.

How effective are face shields?

A letter, published recently in the journal Physics of Fluids, reported on a laboratory experiment where scientists put face shields to the test.

They simulated coughing by connecting the head of a mannequin to a fog machine, and then using a pump to expel the vapour through the mannequin’s mouth.

They found that while face shields stopped the droplets being propelled forwards, aerosolised droplets — those much smaller in size — lingered at the bottom of the shield and floated around at the sides. They eventually spread approximately 90 centimetres from the mannequins.

This is an interesting laboratory experiment, but not conclusive evidence face shields offer less protection than masks in the community.

A lack of research on the effectiveness of face shields means it’s not possible to make any strong recommendations for or against their use.

Where does this leave us?

There’s a lot we still don’t know about this virus and how it spreads.

At present, we believe the virus is spread generally through close contact with an infectious person, contact with the droplets emitted when they sneeze or cough, or contact with surfaces these droplets have contaminated.

To establish an infection the virus enters your body through portals of entry: the mouth, nose and eyes.

Wearing a mask is intended to protect others if you have the infection, by blocking the droplets coming out of your mouth and nose. We call this source control. To a degree — though we have less evidence on this front — it’s also likely to protect you, the wearer, by providing a physical barrier to your portals of entry.

A face shield may offer an advantage in that it provides a physical barrier over all your portals of entry — your eyes as well as your mouth and nose. Shields may also reduce the frequency of the wearer touching their face, and have the added benefit of allowing the person’s face to be seen (if they’re not wearing a mask as well).

However, as they’re not tight fitting, aerosols may still enter and exit around the outside of a face shield, where it’s not fitted in the same way a mask is. And we’re continuing to accumulate evidence about the possible role of aerosolised transmission in the spread of COVID-19, which the World Health Organisation is closely monitoring.

Correct use is important too

Whatever face covering you choose, you must use it properly, and it must fit correctly.

Having masks slung under the chin, hanging off one ear, or your nose poking out over the top of the mask will make them markedly less effective. And of course frequently touching and re-adjusting the mask means we’re possibly contaminating our hands too.

If you don’t intend to wear a mask properly or you’re unable to, then a face shield is a better option. You can also wear mask and a face shield together, should you wish to.

Like masks, there are a variety of face shields available, varying in quality and size. The department of health advise if you wear a face shield it should cover “the wearer’s forehead to below the chin area and wrapping around the sides of the wearer’s face”.

You should not share a face shield. If they’re labelled disposable, don’t reuse them. And if they are reusable you need to clean them regularly following the manufacturer’s instructions.

The upshot

Masks worn correctly are the best option. When wearing a mask is not possible, then a face shield is better than nothing. Neither will work well if not used properly, and importantly, they don’t replace physical distancing and hand hygiene.

Written by Phillip Russo and Brett Mitchell. "So happy": Today reporter Brooke Boney speaks out about Pauline Hanson dumping

Today show reporter Brooke Boney has said that she was "so happy" to see Pauline Hanson fired by Nine as Hanson made comments about social housing tenants that are "disgusting".

“I am so happy to see her gone,” Boney said on ABC-TV’s Q&A program on Monday night.

“I grew up in Housing Commission. To me, I was thinking about all of those kids sitting at home watching.

“All of those people trapped in their apartments, watching and thinking, ‘This is what Australia thinks of us. This is what the rest of our country thinks – is that we’re alcoholics and drug addicts’. And that’s disgusting.

What can be done to protect the residents of Melbourne’s locked down towers from further vilification? And what can be to ensure these residents have access to daily necessities? #QandA pic.twitter.com/5u5kLbJz5I
— QandA (@QandA) July 6, 2020

“I’m all for free speech, and I think that people, when they have different perspectives and different opinions, that most of the time it does help drive argument forward or debate forward or policy forward," Boney explained.

“But when you use it to vilify people, or to be deliberately mean and mean-spirited, it’s …. that, to me, is disgusting.

“She says hurtful things about Aboriginal people as well that upset me.”

Boney is a Gamilaroi/Gomeroi woman and was one of four panellists on Q&A's episode that focused on COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, cancel culture, alcohol in lockdown and political ethics.

Shadow Federal Minister for Environment and Water Terri Butler said that Hanson had been a "public racist since 1996".

“She used her first maiden speech to say that we were in danger of being ‘swamped by Asians’ and used her second speech saying we were in danger of being ‘swamped by Muslims.

“We’re not talking about someone who just woke up this morning a racist. Shows have been platforming her. I think it’s a business model. I think it’s all about her.

“She’s got a party built on a brand. The brand is built on her personality. Her business model has worked.”

However, ex-Liberal MP Christopher Pyne disagreed.

“I think that Pauline Hanson genuinely believes the things that she says,” he said.

“She’s been quite consistent about it – consistently bad, right? – but she’s been consistent about it.

“I’ve been surprised watching Pauline Hanson over 20-odd years that her views haven’t changed very much.

“There’s definitely a cadre of people who believe and agree with what Pauline says.

“And they’ve been the one party from the non-Labor side of politics that’s actually been quite successful over the last 20 years, One Nation.”

Hanson made the offensive comments on the Today show about the Melbourne residents that are trapped inside nine housing commission towers.

Co-host Ally Langdon told Hanson that some of the tower residents haven't eaten properly since Saturday due to the latest restrictions.

“Ah come on Ally, we’ve seen food being delivered there,” Hanson replied. “The fact is a lot of them are drug addicts as well, they are getting their medication, they are alcoholics so they’re being looked after in that way.

“They are actually getting paid extra money. Why are they getting paid extra money? For what? They are not leaving the premises.”

3,000 people are in their second day of quarantine in Melbourne's public housing commission towers. #9Today pic.twitter.com/tpgdWmMTA9
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) July 5, 2020

Hanson then went on to say that an inability to speak English had led to the towers being shut down.

“A lot of these people are from non-English speaking backgrounds, probably English is their second language who haven’t adhered to the rules of social distancing. They all used a lot of the same laundry,” she said.

“So the fact is you’ve got to look at why they are in that situation. Why is it they are in that situation? Why has the Government gone to this high-rise building and shut it down? Possibly because a lot of these people weren’t doing the right thing.

“Is the Government worried about the other areas that are shut down? You know, the people in their homes, are they able to actually get out and buy the food as well? There has to be a reason why they have targeted this set of blocks, apartment blocks. Ask that question.”

After these comments, Hanson suggested that refugees from war-torn countries should be able to handle being locked up.

“You know, these people, I saw them taking a truckload of food to them, all the rest of it, if they are from war-torn countries, which some of these people are, they know what it is like to be in tough conditions,” she said.

“So I’d say, you know, have a look at the facts before you criticise and that aspect and I think the governments and all of these other, you know, these interest groups an everyone will make sure they’re well looked after."

5 minutes with author Karen Brooks

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Karen Brooks, a writer, columnist and academic based in Hobart, Tasmania. She has written 13 books and appeared on the ABC’s The Einstein Factor, Channel 9’s 60 Minutes and Channel 7’s Sunrise and Today Tonight as a social commentator. Her latest novel, The Darkest Shore, is out now.

Over60 talked with Brooks about writing historical fiction, bad writing tips, and dealing with critics.

Over60: What is your best writing tip?

Karen Brooks: Best writing tip is just keep writing, even when you know it’s dreadful and think it won’t work. The reason being, it’s easier to have something on then page or screen to correct than nothing at all. I don’t think I have ever received a bad writing tip – they’re all given with great intentions, even when they might not work for you.

What book(s) are you reading right now?

I am reading Daughter of Victory Lights by Kerri Turner. A work of historical fiction set in London during the Blitz and after. It’s marvellous.

Have your past jobs as an academic and a columnist influenced your writing work?

I think they have in both good and bad ways. The bad way is as an academic, I love the research and find it hard to tear myself away from it. I become lost in the past and follow all these amazing trails and keep digging up wonderful nuggets of information that I just want to include in the book. That cannot always happen.

The good result is, as a columnist, I have strict word limits and pare back my writing, so I am not afraid to cut and delete – so sometimes those nuggets, as golden and glistening as they are, don’t end up in the finished work. I’m also not afraid of deleting sections, chapters or just sentences, as well as being edited – as an academic and columnist it happens all the time, and I know my novel editor is working hard to help me shape the book into its best possible condition.

What do you think makes for a good historical fiction work?

Respecting the past and any details included as much as you can, while never forgetting that your role as a writer is to entertain, move, delight and even shock the reader. History needs to serve the story, not dominate it.

What does your writing routine look like?

I rise early, go for a run, then shower, dress and work six to eight hours, five days a week. Longer days and more when I am nearing the end of a book or trying to meet a tight deadline. I take my writing seriously and treat it as a business – so I dress for work, retreat to my study space and, as much as I can, stay focused and try not to get distracted. It doesn’t always work!

How do you deal with critics, both external (from other people) and internal (from yourself)?

Great question! I always take criticism to heart – but in a good way... mainly. Sometimes, what someone notes about your book can be personal to them, but that’s no reason not to reflect upon it and see if what they’re saying can improve future work.

But there is a difference between critiquing a work and just criticising it for the sake of it. I don’t understand people who do that – you know, go searching for all the things “wrong” with a work when there is so much “right” about it too. But you can’t please everyone. It’s hard not to be devastated if someone really doesn’t like what you’ve done – after all, writers never set out with the intention to have people react in a bad way to their novels, but it can happen. Again, I think about why they have responded in that way and move forward.

The internal critic is much harder to deal with than external ones though! No one can critique their work and believe it’s never as good as you wish or as others might think than the writer her or himself!

What trope grinds your gears?

I don’t think there’s any trope that grinds my gears... yet. Like cliches, I love seeing how writers incorporate and use them. I am constantly impressed with original spins on old cliches, like romantic encounters and interests, or in crime fiction with detectives working a case.

Oh, wait, there is a trope that grinds my gears after all! The stupid police boss who doesn’t respect or listen to his or her subordinates... Even when what they’re saying is smart and obvious. It can be overworked sometimes.

Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?

Can I nominate enough for a dinner party? LOL! Geraldine Brooks (no relation, sadly), Elizabeth George, Michael Connelly, Shirley Hazzard (I did meet her once before she died, and she was wonderful), Bruce Pascoe, Elly Griffiths, Jane Austen, Bram Stoker, Margaret Atwood and Shakespeare... oh, and Geoffrey Chaucer – my next novel features him, and I have a few questions I’d love to ask him! I could have a few dinner parties, with different authors at the table each time... wouldn’t that be sensational (and intimidating)?
