"Patrons yelled to stop": Comedy Festival rocked by death on opening night

Melbourne’s comedy scene was rocked by tragedy on the opening night of this year’s International Comedy Festival, as an attendee suffered a fatal medical episode mid-show, leading to the abrupt cancellation of the event.

The distressing incident occurred during comedian Michael Hing’s performance at the Palais Theatre, where a man on the upper level of the venue suffered a medical emergency. Attendees quickly responded, providing CPR in the dark while Hing remained unaware of the unfolding crisis.

“[It] would have been at least 15 mins worth before the show stopping, and [it] only stopped as patrons yelled to stop performing,” one audience member told The Daily Mail.

Another witness expressed dismay over the handling of the situation, stating, “I can’t believe they [the organisers] didn’t communicate with backstage to halt the show, and that it took the public to yell out to the comedian to stop for something to happen.”

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival addressed the incident in a statement posted on Instagram, confirming the show’s cancellation.

“Melbourne International Comedy Festival regrets to confirm that there was a medical emergency while the Opening Night Allstars Supershow was taking place this evening at the Palais Theatre,” a festival spokesman said. “The show was stopped and cancelled. The Festival will be in touch with all ticket holders tomorrow.”

Victoria Police later confirmed the man’s death. “Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the death of a man in St Kilda on Wednesday, 26 March,” a spokesman said. “Emergency services were called to a theatre on Lower Esplanade about 9pm. A man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.”

Health worker Andrea Bortoli, who was sitting in the upper level’s front row, described the distressing scene as people began leaving and it “became quite obvious that someone was getting CPR. It was just obviously really distressing, so we wanted to leave,” she told The Age.

Eventually, the theatre lights were turned on, and patrons were informed that the show had been cancelled.

The Allstars Gala is one of the most anticipated nights of the festival, bringing together some of the biggest names in comedy. This year’s event was hosted by Hing.

As news of the tragedy spread, comedian Dave Hughes expressed his sympathies on social media, writing, “All performers thoughts are with the family affected”.

Images: Palais Theatre / MichaelHing.com

Dave Hughes finally confronts Kyle Sandilands in on-air ambush

On Thursday morning, Australian radio’s greatest long-running feud got the surprise intervention nobody saw coming – except maybe Jackie O, who orchestrated the whole thing like a puppet master with a microphone.

Jackie O shocked her KIIS FM co-host Kyle Sandilands by bringing in a “mystery guest”, a title that in this case translates to “someone Kyle would rather not speak to before breakfast”. That guest? None other than Australian comedian Dave Hughes, with whom Sandilands has been beefing since approximately the invention of sliced bread (or, more accurately, 2007).

“I had a bit of apprehension,” Jackie admitted, as if unleashing an old nemesis on her co-host was a last-minute decision rather than a premeditated ratings bonanza. And fair enough – over the years, Sandilands and Hughesy have clashed at awards shows, on social media and even in a recent interview where Hughesy announced to the world that he had "no empathy" for Sandilands.

But the most shocking revelation of the day wasn’t the feud itself – it was the fact that one of their biggest online spats was started by none other than Jackie O herself. When she mentioned the duo’s "2009 Twitter feud", Sandilands – who has never had a Twitter account – looked baffled. Turns out, Jackie had taken it upon herself to create a fake Kyle Sandilands Twitter profile to fire back at Hughesy.

Yes, in an era before blue checkmarks and widespread catfishing awareness, Jackie O was out there roleplaying as Kyle, getting into digital fisticuffs with Australia’s favourite nasal-voiced comedian. Hughesy, for his part, was shocked to discover that all these years later, he had been arguing with a radio host’s alter ego and not the real deal.

Their Twitter war, largely fought over who had better TV and radio ratings (a battle in which there are no winners, only casualties), was quickly eclipsed by yet another awkward moment from the past: Sandilands once saying on TV that he “wanted to murder” Hughesy. A comment so extreme that even Kyle himself had no recollection of making it – though, to be fair, it’s probably not the first nor the last time Kyle has forgotten saying something controversial on air.

“Look, I know you could afford to have me killed – and I could afford to have you killed – but we’re not going to do that,” Hughesy quipped, proving that humour can, in fact, be the best conflict resolution tool.

With the beef officially squashed (or at least put on simmer), Hughesy bid farewell, but not before dropping yet another unexpected bombshell. When Sandilands asked if he still kept in touch with their Masked Singer co-star Lindsay Lohan, Hughesy recalled a moment so bizarre it might just be the greatest mystery in Aussie celebrity history.

“The funniest moment of my life was driving along in the country on a Sunday and getting a call from Lindsay – she said ‘I want to go on your radio show right now, because Dannii Minogue’s trying to ruin my life.’ It was a Sunday!” Hughes revealed.

And just like that, we were gifted another unexpected celebrity feud: Lindsay Lohan vs. Dannii Minogue – a battle that, unlike Kyle and Hughesy’s, had been lurking in the shadows all this time. What exactly did Dannii do to warrant Lohan’s dramatic distress call? Did she steal her spotlight? Refuse to share a hair straightener? These are the questions that will now keep Australia up at night.

But for today, at least, we can rest easy knowing that Kyle and Hughesy have finally found common ground. And that common ground is mutual confusion over Jackie O’s decade-old social media catfishing escapades.

Images: Supplied

Dave Hughes' ruthless stab at Kyle Sandilands

Dave Hughes has taken a verbal flamethrower to Kyle Sandilands and his less-than-rockstar status in the Melbourne radio market, leaving viewer and commentators stunned.

The popular TV and radio star, comedian and professional truth-bomber recently sat down with the Herald Sun and, in between deep sighs of relief at no longer being beholden to radio ratings, delivered some choice words about the industry, his axed show and, of course, his long-time Sydney rival, Sandliands.

Hughesy, whose breakfast show Hughesy, Ed & Erin was unceremoniously booted off the airwaves last year, made it clear that he’s not losing any sleep over the fate of The Kyle and Jackie O Show’s Melbourne expansion woes.

“And now I think that we’re finding that out. It’s just habits. You can be a rock star in one city and the other city cannot give a flying f**k about you because they didn’t have the habit for you,” Hughes explained.

And if you were wondering whether Hughesy might have a shred of sympathy for Sandilands, let’s clear that up right now: "I don’t really have any empathy because Kyle doesn’t have any empathy for anyone. If he’s on air he’ll just slag everyone off, including me. So I’ve got no empathy at all. I couldn’t care less to be honest.”

In fact, Hughesy’s concern seems to be exclusively reserved for the shareholders, because, as he so eloquently put it: “They are the ones who are bloody bleeding.”

Sandilands, of course, had confidently predicted that he and Jackie O would dominate Melbourne radio by the end of 2024. That prediction aged about as well as milk left out in the sun, as the final ratings for last year told a harsh truth: The Kyle and Jackie O Show finished in sixth place, with a 5% market share – trailing far behind Jase and Lauren from Nova, who soared with an 11.5% share. To put it in perspective, Kyle and Jackie O lost 24,000 listeners in Melbourne. That’s a lot of people collectively saying, “Yeah, nah.”

Of course, in their homeland of Sydney, the duo remains a powerhouse, finishing the year with a strong 13.5% audience share. But in Melbourne? It’s a different story – a story that Hughesy is gleefully watching unfold, popcorn in hand.

Beyond the Kyle-bashing, Hughesy also took a swing at the entire radio ratings system, calling it out as nothing more than an elaborate magic trick.

“When the ratings work for you, it’s like ‘this is a great system’ and when they don’t you say ‘this system is broken,’” he quipped. “It’s all smoke and mirrors, basically.”

And with that, Hughesy rides off into the sunset, free from the shackles of radio ratings, leaving Kyle Sandilands to wrestle with his Melbourne flop. One thing’s for sure – if Hughesy ever returns to radio, we know who won’t be getting a sympathy card.

Cricket great takes aim at Albo's beer tax freeze

Cricket great David Warner has slammed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's move to combat soaring beer prices.

On Monday, Albanese promised to pause the government's tax hike on beers poured at pubs for the next two years.

Albanese announced the policy while enjoying his "first beer of the year" at the Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre in Marrickville.

"This will make a difference. It is a positive announcement. As I said, good for beer drinkers, good for pubs and clubs, good for cost of living pressures," he said.

Australia's inflation-indexed alcohol tax - which increases twice annually - has long been an issue for breweries, pub owners and customers.

This month, there was a 3.5 per cent rise on the price of beer, an additional cost that usually gets passed onto the customer.

The Prime Minister said if he is re-elected, the Labor government would freeze the indexation on draught beer excise for 24 months from the next indexation date this coming August.

However, Warner believes this move is a "few years too late," slamming the Prime Minister's pledge on social media.

Warner, who is an investor and director of Victoria's St Andrews Beach Brewery, has been affected by the rising prices.

Shortly after Albanese's announcement, Coalition treasury spokesman Angus Taylor said Peter Dutton, if elected, would also freeze tax.

"The government has chosen the eve of an election to promise voters a freeze on a tax that has skyrocketed due to its failure to address inflation at its core," Taylor said.

Image: LUKAS COCH/EPA-EFE/ Shutterstock Editorial/ Instagram

Dave Hughes spills on worst A-list celeb interview

Dave Hughes has revealed the "rudest" A-list celebrity he's ever interviewed in the latest episode of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!

The radio star was talking about all his celebrity interviews throughout the years with campmate Max Balegde, who then asked him: “I want you to be honest – who was the rudest?”

“If we’re going to be honest … it hurts me to say it, but it’s … Ben Stiller. I was a big fan, and he was just a pain in the a**e," Hughes replied.

Hughes then joked that he might've “ruined his Hollywood career” by calling out the A-list actor and director known for films like Zoolander and Meet the Parents.

The radio broadcaster didn't reveal when he'd encountered Stiller or why the actor was a "pain in the a**e" .

In the latest episode of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! former MAFS star Samantha Moitzi was the first of this season's contestants to be evicted from the jungle.

Last week, Aussie TV legend Sigrid Thornton was the latest celeb to join the show in its 11th season.

It's the first time the actress appeared in a reality show during her 40-year career, telling news.com.au: “I felt like if I was going to say yes to a challenge like this, then this was the time for me. I mean, I’ve never done reality television; I’ve never done anything remotely like this.”

“But I don’t hold any particular judgement around it; I’ve removed all potential judgement because I don’t know what it’s going to be. All I know is that it will be extraordinary, exciting, unexpected, and I hope a little bit wonderful.”

Image: I'm A Celeb/ 10

Full House star's devastating cancer diagnosis

Dave Coulier has revealed his devastating cancer diagnosis

The Full House star told the US Today show about his "roller coaster" health struggle on Wednesday.

After finding out that he was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, he said it felt like "I got punched in the stomach because it never happens to you," according to Page Six.

Coulier, whose first symptom was a lump in his groin, noted that he was “on pins and needles for a few days” while waiting to hear whether the disease had spread “to any major organs or [his] blood or bones or anything.”

While waiting for his results, the 65-year-old actor told his wife, Melissa Coulier that he accepted his fate.

“I’m OK with whatever the news [is] going to be no matter how devastating. … I’ve had an incredible life. I’ve had the most amazing people in my life. This has been an extraordinary journey, and I’m OK if this is the end of the journey”.

Fortunately the cancer has not moved outside of his lymphatic system, and since then the actor has started chemotherapy, which he said was “intense” and “scared the daylights” out of him.

“There [are] days where I feel unbelievable,” he said. “Then there’s other days where … I’m just going to lay down and let this be what it’s going to be”.

Coulier is expected to finish treatment in February 2025 after undergoing six rounds of chemo every three weeks.

While the diagnosis was initially shocking, the actor has assured his fans that the curability rate is promising.

Image: Ralph Dominguez/MediaPunch/ Shutterstock Editorial

“Hypocrite”: Hughesy's on-air clash with Greens leader

Dave “Hughesy” Hughes had a fiery debate with Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt about veganism on-air on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick.

Before Bandt appeared on the show, a clip played of Hughesy, who is a vegan, calling for the leader to "quit the party" after learning the Greens leader wasn't a vegan.

He questioned how Bandt could advocate for climate action without adopting a plant-based lifestyle, and the Greens leader was brought onto the show to explain his stance.

“So you are not a vegan?” Hughesy asked the politician.

“I’m not….” replied Bandt. “I applaud those who are, I applaud those who have made the shift. I’ve been thinking about it …”

Hughesy then loudly interjected “ … URGH, THINKING ABOUT IT?”

The Greens leader replied: “I don’t have a good drop-dead reason, but I’ve been thinking about it, and I can probably give you three justifications for it.

"Firstly, we’ve made big changes at home and basically only eat meat for special occasions, the rest of the time we’re vegan or vegetarian at home.”

“…. THERE’S ONE WAY, ADAM, THERE’S ONE WAY …” the presenter yelled in response.

Hughesy's co-star Fev then tried to make light of the situation and asked him: “What are you doing Dave?"

"Adam is doing the version of Leonardo DiCaprio and his private jet flying around the world while banging on about climate change, but you flew to Brisbane on the weekend,” he continued suggesting that Hughesy too was being a hypocrite by getting on a flight recently.

“But I don’t bang on about it,” exclaimed Hughesy.

“Adam is the leader of the Greens … it’s hypocritical! C’mon, you can do it, Adam, you can become a vegan! Be the change you want to see in the world, buddy!”

Hughesy adopted the vegan lifestyle for his own health, but he has previously revealed that it comes with its challenges and his family were also not that enthusiastic about the change.

Image: news.com.au/ Fifi, Fev & Nick

Hughesy's damning tirade over the Logies

Dave Hughes has launched into a damning rant live on air over the annual Logie awards, saying he was disappointed to not be invited to this year's ceremony.

Hughesy has hosted and presented the opening monologue of the Logies several times in past years, but even that wasn't enough to score him an invite to the 2024 awards that happened on Sunday.

The comedian and radio and TV regular appeared on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick on Tuesday, where he launched into a tirade over being snubbed at the event.

“I’ve enjoyed doing the Logies in the past … and look, I wasn’t invited on Sunday night. So, I was just at home, yeah,” Hughes explained.

“So you don’t even get invited if you’re a past host? I thought there’d be a table for you,” host Nick Cody asked.

“I hosted it four times in a row and no invite. No invite! Not even an invite!” responded Hughes, before jokingly shouting: “The amount of losers in that room! I presented for 20 years in a row and didn’t even get an invite.”

Brendan Fevola pointed out, “You’ve got no shows on TV though, why would you get invited?”

“Mate, I pop up on things. I pop up on things! I’m a pop-up guy!” Hughes hit back.

Hughesy's Logies snub comes just two weeks after his radio show was abruptly axed, with breakfast show hosts Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan sharing a statement about their sudden departure from 2DayFM.

"We've loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast," the co-hosts said.

"We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them."

Image credits: Channel Nine / Instagram

The real reason Dave Hughes' radio show was axed

An insider has revealed the real reason behind the sudden axing of 2Day FM's Hughesy, Ed and Erin breakfast show, just hours after it was announced that the show was being pulled off the air.

After three years on air, it was announced on Wednesday night that the show had come to an immediate end.

The breakfast hosts Dave Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan shared a statement announcing their departure.

The axing seemingly came out of nowhere, with many wondering what prompted the sudden change.

Now, news.com.au claims that 2Day FM bosses had long been pressuring Hughesy to move to Sydney full time.

For years, the popular comedian had been commuting to Sydney from Melbourne, where his wife and kids are based.

Both Hughesy and his family had grown tired of the commute, and as a result, Hughesy informed executives at Southern Cross Austereo (the network that owns 2Day FM) that he wouldn’t be relocating to Sydney permanently, and therefore could not commit to another year on the breakfast show.

On top of the commuting issues, the popular radio show had a shocker in the latest round of radio ratings which were released last month.

The trio recorded just a 3.6 per cent audience share, a long way behind Sydney’s FM market leaders Kyle and Jackie O (14.1 cent) and Jonesy and Amanda (8.1 per cent).

News.com.au understands that Dave Cameron, Southern Cross Austereo’s Chief Content Officer, finally decided to bite the bullet and called a snap meeting with the breakfast hosts after Wednesday morning’s show to inform them the show would be cancelled.

The trio were told they could return for one final show on Thursday to say goodbye, but ultimately the hosts decided against it.

Image credits: 2Day FM / Instagram

Hughesy spills the beans on major shows set to be axed

Dave Hughes has shared his prediction that The Masked Singer is die to be axed from Network Ten's lineup this year as the network continues to battle dwindling ratings.

The host of the show made the admission on his radio show on Tuesday, saying he hadn't been given any updates on when filming was due to commence.

“We’ve been waiting on a production schedule. That production schedule has not come through, so as far as I know, The Masked Singer won’t be filmed this year for Channel 10,” Hughes said on his show Hughesy, Ed and Erin on 2DayFM.

“We’ve had such a great time over those years, it’s been such a fun show to be on, so many great singers have been on,” he continued. “We’ve had great panels. We started with Jackie O, Dannii Minogue, [Lindsay] Lohan, then Urzila Carlson came in, we’ve got Abbie Chatfield, Chrissy Swan, Mel B. All stars in their own right."

“It’s a tough one for the production team.”

Later during the radio show, Hughesy and the team called Osher Günsberg to question whether The Bachelor was facing the same grim fate as The Masked Singer.

“I tell you what, I haven’t cancelled our trip to Fiji, which is in the middle of the shooting window we normally have [for The Bachelor],” Günsberg, who has been host of the dating show since 2013, said.

Osher went on to criticise Australian TV for putting British and American shows on prime time, rather than favouring homegrown talent.

“I personally feel we really need to value our own stories, and our culture, and our own voices far more highly,” he said. “And we’ve got to do what we need to do to make that happen on our screens."

“If we’re not going to sing our own songs and tell our own stories – we’re just going to be this weird echo of the US and the UK, and that’s not going to work out well for us.”

Last year's season of The Bachelor premiered to the franchise’s lowest ratings in its decade-long history, while personalities involved with The Masked Singer have repeatedly said "it is a very expensive show to produce".

Why Dave Hughes didn't buy the final Block house

David ‘Hughesy’ Hughes was the surprise guest at this year's The Block auctions, and the Aussie comedian was keen on buying the final home to go on auction – Leah and Ash’s house.

Hughes was one move away from buying House 2 - which was passed in after it failed to hit reserve - but his wife blocked him from buying the home.

“I was accosted as I left the auction, trying to get out of there, because one house didn’t sell and I said, ‘I’ll go talk to my wife’,” Hughes said on KIIS FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin on Tuesday morning.

The radio host then called his wife Holly live-on-air so she could explain the reason why they did not buy House 2.

Holly revealed that she "was being asked by students and teachers,” about whether or not the couple bought the Block house.

“You [Hughes] came home and as we were getting into bed, you said, ‘How would you have felt if I just bought that house?’ And I said, ‘Furious’," Holly revealed.

She then called out her husband, claiming that he only wanted to buy the house to "show off".

“If you bought a third house [in Melbourne] without consulting with me …” she said.

“He never expressed any interesting in investing in that part of Melbourne, it’s so random, he would’ve just been buying a house to show off.

“He had not looked at the houses or anything. He hadn’t watched an episode.”

Although Hughes didn't get a property this season, his previous Block buy in 2017 was a huge success.

Image: Nine

Dave Hughes sets the record straight over famous Block house purchase

Dave Hughes has hit back at long-standing rumours that he grossly overpaid for his house in Melbourne at The Block auctions.

The radio host addressed the speculation on 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show, as his co-host Erin Molan queried him about how the investment property was performing.

In 2017, Hughesy bought the five-bedroom home in Elsternwick, built by contestants Josh and Elyse on Nine’s long-running reno show, for $3.067 million: a whopping $447,000 over the reserve.

Given the steep increase of the price, the purchase of the house led to a lot of talk that Dave Hughes had overspent.

Molan told her co-host on-air that a recent value estimate of the property that she’d found online put the home at $3.4 million.

Six years on from his purchase and with inflation, stamp duty and other factors weighted, Hughes noted that that $300,000-odd increase in value would actually put him at a loss.

However, Hughes said he had recently had the house valued himself, and the news was much better: He was told it is currently worth around $5 million.

After the purchase of the house, even Hughes himself conceded that he may have spent much more than what the house was worth.

In an interview with Stellar magazine in February 2018, he said that the bank had valued the property at “much less” than he paid.

“I went to get a bank loan the other day and they haven’t valued it the same as I paid for it, which is fine, but annoying because there were five bidders,” he said.

He said it was “enough less that it made me annoyed”.

“For f**k’s sake … I just think it’s good value and in a few years’ time people are going to be going, ‘Well, f**k, didn’t he do well with it!’ I am playing the long game, all right? That is what I say to my wife, anyway.”

In September of 2018, he told his then-co-host Kate Langbroek that he’d “copped so much flak” over the purchase.

He said, “It was ridiculous and it’s gone on and on and on. A lot of experts weighed into my purchase … There are articles that have been written all year having a go at me. One article from one mob called Property One or something, they had a dinner party discussion about how I paid too much.”

“She’s still with us, but it won’t be long": Hughesy's heartbreaking family news

Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has held back tears as he shared the heartbreaking details of his mum's health battle live on his radio show.

Speaking candidly on 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin, Hughesy shared that it had been a "tough few weeks" for his family as his mum, Carmel, was nearing the end of her life.

“My mum’s unwell, and the family have gathered around her, and we’re celebrating her life,” Hughesy told co-hosts Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee.

“She’s still with us, but it won’t be long. She’s a beautiful woman who’s been a great matriarch of the family, and we’re all around her at the moment.”

While holding back tears, Hughesy then revealed that “she’s asleep now and she probably won’t wake up again”.

He explained the family had been “going through photos” recently in celebration of Carmel’s life.

“Mum grew up in an orphanage, and there’s a photo of her teaching a class with nuns looking over her … She had to leave the orphanage because she didn’t want to be a teacher, so she left with nothing and went and became a nurse, and met Dad.”

Reflecting on his mother’s legacy during the segment on Friday, Hughesy told his co-hosts: “She’s been a beautiful mother, who really supports her children.”

He went on: “Everyone goes through [losing their parents] … but the memories of all the sacrifice, and all the good times … She’s done so well in her life. We’ll miss her a lot.

“She’s always been stoic and never complained.”

Despite the difficult time Hughesy and his family are going through, the comedian was still able to smile and laugh as he reflected on his mum's sense of humour that she has kept "until the end".

“We were around and didn’t think she could even speak again, and one of the nurses was lifting her and said, ‘I’m sorry if I drop you’, and Mum just whispered, ‘it doesn't matter now’, and made the nurse laugh.”

“So she was still coming out with zingers … she’s a beautiful woman.”

Dave Hughes is the latest media personality to open up about his worst celebrity interview.

The 2Day FM breakfast host named and shamed the singer in an interview with news.com.au’s Shock Jocks, where radio hosts have to answer tough questions or be "electrocuted".

“Avril Lavigne was a shocker,” he said, referring to the pop-punk sensation, who peaked during the early 2000s.

“She had a bad attitude, it was back around Sk8er Boi when she was at the height of her fame,” he added.

“She wouldn’t look at any of us. I’m not saying I’m the most attractive person in the world, but you can just look at me once.”

Hughesy's confession comes just over a week after Chrissie Swan revealed that former AFL legend Sam Newman was the worst interview of her career.

“It was terrible,” Swan said about Newman on Nova last week, “it was a terrible, terrible situation and so unusual in my career to feel so attacked.”

The interview was so bad that Swan had to walk out, and the interview itself never aired.

Newman hit back in response to Swan's comments and said: “What a coward to ask someone to come in, then walk out of the studio about an opinion over a topic we were talking about.

“I just gave my opinion and she walked out, how unprofessional. What a coward."

Image: Getty

Dave Hughes mugged by "big man" on Melbourne street

Comedian Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has shared an incident on air about a harrowing encounter he had while grabbing dinner in Melbourne for his family on a Tuesday night.

The 52-year-old radio host recounted the incident during his appearance on 2DAY FM’s morning show, "Hughesy, Ed & Erin", with fellow comedian and stand-in host, Kate Langbroek.

Hughes explained that he had ridden his electric bike to a nearby takeaway restaurant close to his residence to order dinner for his family.

Unfortunately, upon his arrival, he discovered that the restaurant he had in mind was closed. Frustrated by the situation, he took out his phone with the intention of calling his wife to discuss alternative dinner plans when, suddenly, his phone was snatched from his hand.

While recalling the incident, Hughes expressed how startled he was, saying, "I’m on the bike, and I put my phone up to my ear, and then all of a sudden, someone grabs my phone out of my hand, just grabbed it, yes, stole my phone."

He went on to describe the thief as a "big man" who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, suspecting him to be a "meth head": “I look and it’s a man, a big man, and he is off his nut. I’m gonna say he’s a meth head, you know what I'm talking about.”

The assailant's erratic behaviour didn't end with the phone theft. Hughes continued, "He tries to talk into the phone and he goes, ‘You weren’t even talking to anyone.’ Like it was my fault, like I was pretending to make a phone call."

Rather than pursuing the thief on his bike, Hughes resorted to shouting, "Give me my phone back!"

The situation eventually deescalated as the man threw the phone to the ground and stumbled away, eventually confronting a nearby vehicle. "He just staggered off and basically attacked a car,” said Hughes.

Langbroek criticised Hughes for not immediately contacting the police after the unsettling incident, expressing concern about tolerating such dysfunction in society. “I know that we’re all like, that’s sort of how it rolls," she said, "but when you start accepting dysfunction like that, then dysfunction will rule.”

Hughes, who had lost his driver's license the previous month due to a series of minor traffic violations that resulted in the loss of his accumulated points, had been relying on his electric bike for transportation.

Image: 2DAY FM
