Erin Patterson enters plea for murder charges

AFP reveal what police dogs found in Erin Patterson's home

<p>The Police Commissioner has revealed what detective dogs found during an extensive search of Erin Patterson's house after her arrest. </p> <p>Patterson, the Gippsland woman at the centre of a mushroom lunch that resulted in the deaths of three people, was charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder late last year. </p> <p>AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw has shared that detective dogs uncovered a series of suspicious items, which were not found during the initial search of Patterson's home. </p> <p>"In November last year, the AFP provided its technology detector dogs to assist our hard-working colleagues at Victoria Police while executing a search warrant relating to individuals who had ingested death cap mushrooms," Kershaw told a Senate estimates hearing.</p> <p>"Technology Detector Dog Georgia found one USB, a micro secure digital card and a sim card."</p> <p>"Technology Detector Dog Alma found a mobile phone, five iPads, a trail camera, and a secure digital card and a smart watch."</p> <p>"These were not found during initial searches undertaken by officers."</p> <p>Patterson remains behind bars while police sift through the newly uncovered evidence, as she is expected to front court again on March 25th. </p> <p>The three murder charges and two of the attempted murder charges relate to a beef wellington lunch allegedly laced with death cap mushrooms that was cooked and served by Patterson at her home on July 29th 2023. </p> <p>The three other attempted murder charges relate to her husband Simon, 48, after he became sick following meals on three occasions between 2021 and 2022.</p> <p>Court documents revealed Patterson is accused of attempting to kill Simon on four occasions - between 16th and 17th November 2021, between 25th and 27th May 2022, on 6th September 2022 and at the mushroom lunch in July 2023. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Nine News / A Current Affair</em></p>

Text messages reveal accused mushroom killer’s “horrible upbringing”

<p>Texts that alleged triple murderer Erin Patterson sent to a friend have emerged revealing her "horrible upbringing".</p> <p>The texts were sent shortly after the death of Patterson's mum Heather Scutter in 2019, where she described her mother as "cold" and "weird". </p> <p>“My mum was ultra weird her whole life,” she wrote.</p> <p>“We had a horrible upbringing. Mum was essentially a cold robot. It was like being brought up in a Russian orphanage where they don’t touch babies.</p> <p>"That's what my psych reckons. She said she wishes she could have studied my mum lol."</p> <p>The messages, obtained by the <em>Herald Sun, </em>also revealed Patterson's lack of connection with her late father Eitan Scutter, who she called "a doormat." </p> <p>“Dad wanted to be warm and loving to us but mum wouldn’t let him because it would spoil us so he did as he was told,” she said. </p> <p>“She would shout at him if he did the wrong thing so he became very meek and compliant.</p> <p>“My sister and I would hide in our room most of the time so we couldn’t do anything wrong.”</p> <p>These texts have emerged after a former colleague of Patterson described her as “eccentric” and “abrasive”, during her time as an air traffic controller in the early 2000s. </p> <p>The former colleague also told the <em>Herald Sun </em>that Patterson was highly intelligent and capable as she was able to graduate from the challenging training course and work independently in the field. </p> <p>“She was rated in the field and was actually responsible for running airspace for a while,” the former colleague told the publication. </p> <p>“She’s very bright and much brighter than people might think. Accused mushroom killer puts home up for sale

Erin Patterson charged with EIGHT counts of murder and attempted murder

<p>Erin Patterson has been arrested and charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder following the tragic death cap mushroom incident that occurred on July 29.</p> <p>The incident in question involved a mushroom lunch that resulted in the death of three people and severe illness in several others. Three victims, Heather Wilkinson, Gail Patterson and Don Patterson, lost their lives after allegedly consuming a beef wellington at Erin Patterson's residence. Heather's husband and Baptist church pastor, Ian Wilkinson, miraculously survived but was hospitalised in critical condition for nearly two months. <p>Erin Patterson has been arrested at her home in Victoria over her potential involvement in the suspicious deaths of three people. </p> <p>In July, Gail and Don Patterson, the parents of Erin Patterson's ex-husband, and Gail Patterson's sister, Heather Wilkinson, died from mushroom poisoning after attending a lunch hosted by the 49-year-old woman. </p> <p>Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson also attended the lunch and was critically ill, but recovered.</p> <p>All four had shared a meal, understood to be a beef Wellington, allegedly cooked by Patterson.</p> <p>Patterson was arrested early on Thursday morning, with AFP conducting a search of her home shortly after her arrest with technology detector dogs in tow. </p> <p>Veteran crime journalist John Silvester, of <a href="https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/mushroom-cook-erin-patterson-arrested-over-fatal-lunch-20231102-p5egxu.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>The Age</em></a> newspaper, told <em>Today Extra</em> on Thursday that the dogs were a sophisticated police tool that can detect electronic devices.</p> <p>"These dogs are absolutely amazing and they can sniff out and have sniffed out a SIM card that was hidden in a bowl of garlic," he said.</p> <p>"They are there for a purpose. This is not speculation. "Nobody wins": Sam Newman provides update after explosive outburst

<p>The future of Sam Newman's podcast is in jeopardy after his co-host Don Scott has officially quit the program. </p> <p>The shock exit comes after Newman launched into an expletive-ridden tirade at Scott last week in a now deleted segment of the podcast, which ended with Newman telling Scott to "f**k off" as he left the building. </p> <p>Now, Scott has returned to the You <em>Cannot Be Serious</em> podcast, but only to confirm he isn't coming back. </p> <p>“You do whatever you want to do … (but) what is the point of trying to have a discussion with somebody who is going off their brain?” Scott asked.</p> <p>“You do not talk to anybody no matter whether it is on-air or wherever in life when they are not rational, so you walk away."</p> <p>“I’m not getting into this … This is like a domestic and nobody wins in a domestic."</p> <p>“You can put your view as much as you like and I am not here to defend or whatever else."</p> <p>“Everybody has a different personality. I am not in to conflict.”</p> <p>Newman, who refused to believe he overreacted during the argument, asked, “Can we finally say that you’re not going to do the podcast anymore? "F*** off, go home": Sam Newman loses it at podcast co-host

<p>Sam Newman's podcast could be on the rocks after an expletive-ridden tirade caused a rift between the pair. </p> <p>The former AFL player hosts the <em>You Cannot Be Serious</em> podcast with Don Scott, who stormed off in the middle of a recording. </p> <p>The<em> Herald Sun</em> first reported Newman’s foul-mouthed blow up at Scott over technical issues they were having in the studio. </p> <p>“Holy s**t. Jesus Christ, if you touch that f***ing thing again. Stop it, I’m serious, f*** you, God almighty,” Newman said.</p> <p>Newman went on to say: “I can’t do it. If you could f***ing do something properly for once in your f***ing life, don’t touch the microphone and speak into it and stop eating. F***. In the meantime, we’ll miss them.” </p> <p>Simon acknowledged his parents' strong Christian faith and emphasised that they were open-minded believers who respected diverse perspectives. He reflected on their perspective on death as an inevitable part of life but not the ultimate end.</p> <p>In a gesture of gratitude, Simon thanked the medical staff at Austin and Dandenong hospitals for their care, particularly noting the compassionate act that allowed Gail to see Don one last time before his transfer to the ICU.</p> <p>Heather Wilkinson's situation remains critical, and her husband, Ian Wilkinson, a church pastor, is recovering in the hospital after consuming the same meal. <p>Erin Patterson, the woman under investigation for allegedly cooking the deadly mushroom meal that claimed the lives of three people, has previously faced a series of charges after being involved in a drunk-driving incident.</p> <p>According to reports from The Australian, the 49-year-old was convicted in 2004 of driving drunk in an unregistered vehicle. </p> <p>Court records have revealed that Patterson, who was then known as Erin Trudi Scutter and was aged 29, faced legal consequences for her reckless actions, losing her license for 30 months after crashing her vehicle in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne while heavily intoxicated.</p> <p>The reports revealed that after the crash, she fled from authorities by speeding away from the crash scene, reaching 95 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.</p> <p>The convictions that were handed down were for charges of failing to stop a vehicle after an accident, failing to provide identifying information after causing property damage, using an unregistered vehicle on a highway, failing to provide information after property damage, and driving at 95 km/h in a restricted 60 km/h zone.</p> <p>At the time of the crash, Erin's blood alcohol level was 0.14 per cent, indicating significant impairment, however the charges of drink driving were dropped, potentially due to overlapping elements in other charges.</p> <p>Patterson has yet to comment on the previous charges, after being advised by her lawyer not to make any public comments as she remains under investigation for the deadly mushroom meal. </p> <p>She has <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/details-of-erin-patterson-s-police-statement-around-fatal-mushroom-meal-revealed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">denied any wrongdoing</a> in the mushroom incident, although according to police, they are investigating Patterson because she was the only adult among five who did not either die or suffer severe illness after ingesting the deadly mushrooms.</p> <p><em>Image credits: A Current Affair</em></p>

"I am hoping this statement might help in some way. I believe if people understood the background more, they would not be so quick to rush to judgement. I am now devastated to think that these mushrooms may have contributed to the illness suffered by my loved ones. I really want to repeat that I had absolutely no reason to hurt these people whom I loved."</p> <p>The tragic incident occurred in Leongatha, a town southeast of Melbourne, where Ms. Patterson's mother and father-in-law, Don and Gail Patterson, as well as Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, lost their lives after consuming lunch at Ms. Patterson's residence on July 29. Only very close family friends of Don and then John and mine enjoyed the property.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ms Bradsen said her father-in-law would often spend time at the property enjoying the outdoors and doing maintenance work.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“In the early days, he would come up here often,” she said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“He spent a lot of time clearing the woody weeds and he enjoyed the odd bonfire.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“He had a fire get away from him once in the valley. Gold! Gold! Gold! Australia wins gold to lead the Paralympics

<p>The Paralympics have started in Tokyo and on the first day, Australia has won six gold medals, one silver and three bronze which puts us at the top of the medal tally.</p> <p>It was Australian cyclists who won the first two medals of the Games. Paige Greco and Emily Petricola both won their cycling events at the velodrome – the first two medals of the Games.</p> <p>The swimmers took things a step further with four golds to William Martin, Lakeisha Patterson and best mates Ben Popham and Rowan Crothers.</p> <p>Popham – who won both the men’s S8 100m freestyle - said to the media at the time: "I always tell my friends and family at home to not stress at the 50 if I'm not leading, and I quietly backed myself to reel 'em in but it still feels incredible."</p> <p>"I'm not sure the emotion's going to set in for a while," he added.</p> <p><strong>Winners talked about the positive effect of the Games</strong></p> <p>When talking to the media, our winners were full of inspiring messages for young people with disabilities, talking about how competing for the Games has transformed their lives.</p> <p>Rowan Crowthers, who won the S10 50m freestyle and suffers from cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease said: "When I was really young, my disability was so severe and I started with swimming to help my cerebral palsy as that kind of therapy.”</p> <p>"Back then, I hated it. I couldn't stand it”, he said.</p> <p>"If it wasn't for discovering the Paralympics, I never would have even come close to this. It's amazing to come up here and do this now and I've proved that I'm not just a person with a disability, I'm also an elite athlete," he added.</p> <p>Petricola said, after recording a world record at the Games, said she found her sport at a critical turning point in her life, kicking off a journey which has come to the point where she won her cycling event at the Games.</p> <p>She said "words can't describe" how grateful she was to Olympic rowing silver medallist Matt Ryan for suggesting she take up cycling and push for Tokyo and five-time Olympic cyclist Shane Kelly for his help along the way.</p> <p>"They've changed my life and they've saved my life," she said, before going on to thank her family and a long list of other supporters.</p> <p><strong>Excellence in the middle-distance swimming</strong></p> <p>The next events at the Paralympics were the middle-distance swimming and William Martin and Lakeisha Patterson took out the men's and women's S9 400m freestyle.</p> <p>Patterson powered home to win over Hungary's Zsofia Konkoly while Martin said he was just following his coach's instructions.</p> <p>"He told me to jump into this race as a bit of an introduction to the meet," said Martin, standing alongside bronze medal winning teammate Alexander Tuckfield.</p> <p>"I went alright, I guess I'll just do what I'm told, see how things go, and yeah, here we are."</p> <p>Patterson said: “All I could do was attack it from the start and hold on. It was such a good race by everyone. I knew I had it in me. I knew what I was capable of but to be able to finally put all the pieces together was really exciting.</p> <p>"It's been such a long, hard couple of years. "I’m bloody disappointed": Senior NSW minister flaunts Easter travel ban

<p>Embattled Minister Don Harwin has urgently returned to Sydney apologising to the Premier and the people of Sydney.</p> <p>The Arts Minister was caught residing at his Pearl Beach holiday home on the Central Coast, despite countless government pleas for Sydneysiders to stay out of regional NSW to avoid the spread of the virus.</p> <p>Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she was “disappointed” – despite being aware of Harwin’s plans before<span> </span><em>The Daily Telegraph</em><span> </span>reported it.</p> <p>Berejiklian said it was important her colleagues were “seen to stick to the rule” yet also attempted to defend Harwin by saying he fled to the coast before the lockdown took place.</p> <p>She did not speak about the fact that he had travelled back and forth at least twice in that period.</p> <p>When asked why she’s expressing her disappointment only after<span> </span><em>The Daily Telegraph</em><span> </span>made the news public, Berejiklian said “based on what he told me strictly he hadn’t breached the rules because they were prior to the restrictions”. </p> <p>“But as I say today, it’s not strictly about the rules it’s about the message to the community.”</p> <p>Harwin, who usually lives in Elizabeth Bay in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, was spotted at his $1.3 million beachside investment property.</p> <p>The Premier said she will not sack the minister even if he receives a penalty, saying you can’t terminate everyone who gets a fine.</p> <p>In a written statement this morning, Harwin said: “I apologise to the Premier and the people of NSW”.</p> <p>“I took advice from my department officials about the Public Health Order to ensure I adhered to the guidelines during this period.</p> <p>“I have no desire to cause a distraction for the Government at this important time and have returned to my Sydney home.”</p> <p>Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said if Harwin’s reasoning for travelling isn’t adequate, then he won’t hesitate to issue a fine.</p> <p>“If (Harwin’s) excuse doesn’t cut the mustard he’ll get the fine,” he said.</p> <p>Mr Fuller said Harwin will be subjected to a line of questioning and pointed out that there was evidence of another person in his home, which may have also breached the rules.</p> <p>Harwin confirmed he had been at the holiday home for “about three weeks” and in that time had once travelled to and from Sydney for a medical appointment.</p> <p>However, he was also in Parliament on March 24 – two weeks ago – which he did not mention.</p> <p>Deputy Premier John Barilaro, who has strongly advised Sydneysiders to stay away from the regions, said there was a clear expectation for everyone to stay in their principal place of residence.</p> <p>“The rules apply to everyone, politicians aren’t exempt – we need to set the standard and I’m bloody disappointed,” he said.</p> <p>“Everyone could go to their holiday home – we are asking people not to. This sets a bad example.”</p>
