10 ways to cruise as a senior

Just because you’re older, that doesn’t mean you can’t experience all that a cruising holiday has to offer. Follow our simple tips for a fun filled holiday on the water.

1. Choose the right ship

Cruise ships today carry anywhere from six to 6,000 people. The larger megaliners tend to be geared towards families with plenty of crazy rides and high-energy activities. They’ll also probably be crowded with kids. Smaller boutique ships operate at a slower pace and are generally stocked with an older crowd. Do your research and find one to suit you.

2. And the right cabin

Do you need an accessible cabin? Do you want to reduce walking with a cabin close to the elevators? Is it important for you to have some outside space of your own? These are all important questions that you’ll need to answer when you book. The right cabin can make or break a cruise.

3. Pick an appropriate itinerary

You’ll need to decide if you want to visit new places every day or spend more time onboard the ship. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Port heavy itineraries, where you’re stopping at a new destination every day, can be tiring. On the other hand, you might get bored with too many days at sea. Think realistically about your needs and make the right choice for you.

4. Research your dates

One of the best things about being a senior traveller is that you are (generally) no longer bound by things like school holidays. By avoiding these times you’ll not only save money, you won’t be on a ship with an unusually high proportion of children. When cruising in the Caribbean, you’ll also need to keep in mind the US college holidays so you’re not trapped with a bunch of boozy spring breakers.

5. Allow extra time

It’s a sad fact of ageing that you’re not as quick on your feet as you used to be. That means you’ll need to factor in extra time for just about everything. Ships can be huge, so you don’t want to be rushing to make a dinner reservation or spa appointment. This applies on shore too. If you’re really late, the ship will leave without you so don’t cut it too fine.

6. Choose the right shore excursions

Before you book, have a chat with the shore excursions team and get a good idea of the physical requirements. What they consider minimal walking might not be the same as what you consider minimal walking. These tours aren’t cheap, so you want to be sure that you can enjoy everything it involves.

7. Look at onboard activities

You might not want to get off at every port (which can be exhausting) but still want to be entertained onboard. And adventurous activities like skydiving simulators and giant waterslides may not be your thing any more. Many cruise lines offer fantastic enrichment programs onboard where you can listen to world-class lecturers, learn new skills or watch performances from the likes of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts or the Lincoln Centre.

8. Give yourself time to relax

You’re on holiday! If you want to spend a day in bed, watching movies and ordering room service then do exactly that. Don’t feel any pressure to be up and about every day.

9. Travel with the right companions

Solo, couple, friends or family, there’s a cruise for every group. Cruising is hugely popular with multi-generational groups as there something for everyone to do, but it might not make for the most relaxing holiday. If you’re a solo traveller, you can book a single cabin all to yourself or find a room mate with any number of matching services. Just think carefully – because once you’re onboard with your travel buddy, there’s no getting off.

10. Think about medical care

Be realistic about any medical needs you may have. Most ships have a decent medical centre, but if you are spending multiple days at sea or cruising to very remote destinations and something happens it might not be enough to help you. If you are concerned, choose cruises that stay close to shore or visit developed countries where you can get proper treatment quickly.

The world continues to get weirder,” another added.

However, many praised the star for using his platform and lending his voice to the Yes campaign.

“Thanks for sharing this. It is a big deal here and causing a lot of controversy and misinformation,” one fan commented.

“Thank you and Taika for the solidarity. The lead up to the referendum has been really rough on our communities and it’s actually really nice to get some encouragement from our Indigenous brothers from across the seas,” another added.

“I can’t even begin to thank you for sharing this. I will not read any more of the comments,” a third commented.

“Thank you for adding your voice to the thousands across Australia who will be voting yes. Every voice counts,” added a fourth.

The video itself is a three-minute skit-style clip where Briggs talks to two ignorant women - who had casual biases echoing the No campaign - about the upcoming Voice referendum.

He kindly calls them out for their lack of information, with their excuse being that they haven't “had heaps of time” because of "life".

“Have you got your phone? Let’s see what you do have time for,” Briggs asks in the clip and as he opens up their search history, and jokingly says: “‘Did Aaron leave Love Island 13 because he had gonorrhoea?’ Big questions."

He then googles the proposal and finds a basic explainer in seconds.

“The Voice referendum means we are voting to have a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice who may make representations to parliament on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"The Voice will give independent advice to parliament and will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people based on the wishes of communities. That advice then goes to parliament who continues to hold the ultimate power for legislative change," they said.

“OK, well, that is quite clear, I’d just vote yes to that?” the woman adds. “How did you find that? You went on Google, and it’s, the first result? OK, well you need to tell people about that Google thing.”

The clip ends with a message that says: "Vote Yes to that referendum thing."

Images: Instagram/ Getty: Mike Marsland/WireImage

Kids dressing up as older people is harmless fun, right? No, it’s ageist, whatever Bluey says

Lisa Mitchell, Deakin University

A child once approached me, hunched over, carrying a vacuum cleaner like a walking stick. In a wobbly voice, he asked: "Do you want to play grannies?"

The idea came from the children’s TV show Bluey, which has episodes, a book, magazine editions and an image filter about dressing up as “grannies”.

Children are also dressing up as 100-year-olds to mark their first “100 days of school”, an idea gaining popularity in Australia.

Is this all just harmless fun?

How stereotypes take hold

When I look at the older people in my life, or the patients I see as a geriatrician, I cannot imagine how to suck out the individual to formulate a “look”.

But Google “older person dress-ups” and you will find Pinterests and Wikihow pages doing just that.

Waistcoats, walking sticks, glasses and hunched backs are the key. If you’re a “granny”, don’t forget a shawl and tinned beans. You can buy “old lady” wigs or an “old man” moustache and bushy eyebrows.

This depiction of how older people look and behave is a stereotype. And if dressing up as an older person is an example, such stereotypes are all around us.

What’s the harm?

There is some debate about whether stereotyping is intrinsically wrong, and if it is, why. But there is plenty of research about the harms of age stereotypes or ageism. That’s harm to current older people and harm to future older people.

The World Health Organization defines ageism as: "the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or ourselves based on age."

Ageism contributes to social isolation, reduced health and life expectancy and costs economies billions of dollars globally.

When it comes to health, the impact of negative stereotypes and beliefs about ageing may be even more harmful than the discrimination itself.

In laboratory studies, older people perform worse than expected on tasks such as memory or thinking after being shown negative stereotypes about ageing. This may be due to a “stereotype threat”. This is when a person’s performance is impaired because they are worried about confirming a negative stereotype about the group they belong to. In other words, they perform less well because they’re worried about acting “old”.

Another theory is “stereotype embodiment”. This is where people absorb negative stereotypes throughout their life and come to believe decline is an inevitable consequence of ageing. This leads to biological, psychological and physiological changes that create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I have seen this in my clinic with people who do well, until they realise they’re an older person – a birthday, a fall, a revelation when they look in the mirror. Then, they stop going out, stop exercising, stop seeing their friends.

Evidence for “stereotype embodiment” comes from studies that show people with more negative views about ageing are more likely to have higher levels of stress hormones (such as cortisol and C-reactive protein) and are less likely to engage in health behaviours, such as exercising and eating healthy foods.

Younger adults with negative views about ageing are more likely to have a heart attack up to about 40 years later. People with the most negative attitudes towards ageing have a lower life expectancy by as much as 7.5 years.

Children are particularly susceptible to absorbing stereotypes, a process that starts in early childhood.

Ageism is all around us

One in two people have ageist views, so tackling ageism is complicated given it is socially acceptable and normalised.

Think of all the birthday cards and jokes about ageing or phrases like “geezer” and “old duck”. Assuming a person (including yourself) is “too old” for something. Older people say it is harder to find work and they face discrimination in health care.

How can we reduce ageism?

We can reduce ageism through laws, policies and education. But we can also reduce it via intergenerational contact, where older people and younger people come together. This helps break down the segregation that allows stereotypes to fester. Think of the TV series Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds or the follow-up Old People’s Home for Teenagers. More simply, children can hang out with their older relatives, neighbours and friends.

We can also challenge a negative view of ageing. What if we allowed kids to imagine their lives as grandparents and 100-year-olds as freely as they view their current selves? #GirlMaths: a seemingly innocent and fun way to justify expenses that can have serious financial consequences

Janneke Blijlevens, RMIT University; Angel Zhong, RMIT University, and Lauren Gurrieri, RMIT University

These shoes are perfect, made for me! I have to get them! But really, I should be paying off my car loan instead. I can’t justify this purchase. Or can I …?

We all know this feeling, this tension between what you really want to do and what you really should, or shouldn’t, do. What you are experiencing is cognitive dissonance.

It’s a psychological discomfort we feel when our behaviours and our values or beliefs do not match. Not to worry, we can make that discomfort simply disappear with a good dose of #GirlMaths!

So what is #GirlMaths?

GirlMaths recently became a viral phenomenon on TikTok after New Zealand FVHZM radio hosts Fletch, Vaughan and Hayley used #GirlMaths to justify one host’s mother’s expensive dress purchase as basically free because the dress was going to be worn at least four times.

Since then, influencers have added to the #GirlMaths trend with gems such as “If I buy it for $100, wear it, and then resell it for $80 then I basically wore it for free”, “If I pay with cash, it means it’s free”, and “If I just returned something, then purchase something new for the same amount of money, then it’s free”.

The reason #GirlMaths resonates so well with everyone and allows it to go viral is that we are very familiar with this type of thinking. The mental gymnastics of #GirlMaths needed to justify cost-per-wear or cash-is-free is a perfect display of behavioural biases and heuristics, such as confirmation bias and denomination bias, being applied to everyday consumption decisions.

The psychology of decision-making

Behavioural biases and heuristics are shortcuts in our thinking that help us make decisions quicker and easier, and are great for reducing the cognitive dissonance we sometimes experience.

Our brain has a lot of decisions to make in a day and simply doesn’t have the power to scrutinise every little detail of every decision. These shortcuts in our thinking may facilitate the decision making process, but they don’t always mean we make the most optimal decisions.

Confirmation bias is a bias where you justify your decisions by considering only the evidence that supports what you want and ignore the evidence that would mean you’d have to make a different decision. Cost-per-wear does sound quite financially savvy. It is just like bulk-buying pantry essentials, right?

The issue is you are ignoring the facts such as: 1) your disposable income does not match this expense in light of your utility bills, 2) you could rewear a cheaper dress all the same, and 3) by spending money on a fancy dress, you lose the opportunity to spend the money on other better investments for wealth accumulation, or to pay off your car loan.

The financial and social costs

But it’s all a bit of innocent fun, right? Surely people won’t take #GirlMaths that seriously? We beg to differ.

First, the term is unnecessarily gendered. Gendered language operates to reinforce societal expectations with a particular gender and can promote stereotypes, biases and binary categories.

In this case, the term “girl maths” reinforces problematic stereotypes that equate women with consumption, frivolity and extravagant spending. When stereotypes are reinforced within our own social circles, we are more likely to internalise these as part of our identity.

By representing women in a less favourable way, the term operates to both demean and discriminate on a gendered basis. This is heightened by the use of “girl” as opposed to “woman”, which implies someone is childlike or lacking in knowledge or experience. It also begs the question what “boy maths” - set up as something opposing and different - might connote.

Second, the #GirlMaths trend reminds us of the power of “finfluencers” – social media content creators amassing huge online followings by sharing advice on anything from budgeting to buying a house, to investing.

These online gurus appeal to Gen Z and millennials, simplifying complex financial concepts into digestible nuggets, much like #GirlMaths simplifies purchases based on cost-per-wear or cash-as-free.

Just as regulators such as ASIC repeatedly warn us of the dangers of buy-now-pay-later services, we must caution the #GirlMaths trend as a dangerous cocktail for young women who are susceptible to the “advice” of finfluencers.

The trend resembles BNPL by breaking down expenses into smaller, more palatable portions, making purchases seem justifiable and affordable at the moment.

Denomination bias describes this tendency to spend more money when it is denominated in small amounts rather than large amounts. We find it much easier to spend $50 four times than $200 all at once.

However, the convenience of these shortcuts in our thinking can obscure the hidden financial risks. You may overlook the bigger picture of your financial health, and spend more than what you can afford. That’s why a large number of BNPL users find themselves ending up in a modern debt trap.

The perils of #GirlMaths

The danger of #GirlMaths to young women lies in the cocktail of feeling oddly familiar and reinforced in this biased thinking, the problematic stereotypes that shape identities, and the power of finfluencers, who wield increasing influence over the financial choices and decision-making of young women.

While the term may initially come across as innocent fun, it’s crucial not to underestimate its potential harms. Instead, let’s champion the use of inclusive language in finance that doesn’t perpetuate gender biases.

And if you’re a staunch supporter of #GirlMaths, we strongly urge you to take into account the possible adverse financial consequences of these quick-fix spending habits.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Fun ways to boost memory in seniors

Memory issues can seriously deteriorate the quality of life for seniors. To reverse the typically progressive process of memory loss, many solutions have been put forward. These include creative leisure activities aimed to work on the senior’s brain while providing relaxation.

To work on a senior’s memory, it’s optimal to have them work on a project, focusing and seeing the work being done. There are plenty of games and activities available to help memory.

Paint by Numbers

Paint by Numbers is a creative art form that involves painting a pre-drawn sketch on a linen canvas with reference numbers. It helps stimulate the intellect and senses. They’re available in colour books as well, you can find them at your local Kmart and select supermarkets.

Diamond painting

Diamond painting is a manual activity where the senior creates beautiful pictures using rhinestones to stick onto a self-adhesive canvas. It calls for concentration, reflection, memorisation, and patience from the practitioner, which is beneficial for working on memory.

Scratch painting

Scratch painting is a fun activity that involves scratching a picture with a coin or stylus, like a lottery scratch-off. It requires interest and concentration from the individual, who will enjoy the final picture and benefit their memory.

Music therapy

Music therapy is used to treat and alleviate disorders, such as relational, behavioural, and communication difficulties. It also has benefits for seniors with memory problems, as it allows them to mobilise concentration, emotions, and memory in a playful way.

Fun camping activities for the whole family

Dust off the tent and grab the sleeping bags because it is well and truly camping season! A traditional summer pursuit for many families, camping is not only great fun for all ages but a wonderful family bonding times. If you’re camping with the extended family this season, here are some activities that will engage even the most disinterested kid. Get ready for some wholesome fun that does not involve technology!

Scavenger hunt

Make it a competition so everyone, even the adults, get involved and active! As you will likely be around nature, create a nature-themed hunt. It can be as simple as collecting items like leaves of certain colours, different shaped rocks, snail shells or even spotting different types of bugs and animals. In this case, get everyone to take a photo of the item. Make sure you warn kids of things to avoid like certain poisonous or prickly plants that might be around.

Obstacle course

Create the ultimate outdoor obstacle course to challenge the whole family. It can be as easy or hard as you want so set it to accommodate all ages and activity levels in the family. Obstacles like crawling under picnic tables, skipping stones, long jumps on a beach, hanging off a branch are all options. Use what is at your campsite and race each other with the ‘losers’ having to cook dinner or collect firewood.

Nature watching

Since the whole family will be in the thick of the bush, take the time to get to know nature better! Most national parks and campsites will have brochures of types of animals and birds in the area or grab a guidebook and go bird and animal watching. Or learn about the different types of flora in the area. Just be sure to respect nature and not damage anything.

Learn new skills

A camping trip is a great time to teach the kids how to read maps and compasses (or brush up if you are rusty). Reading a map and compass is quickly becoming a lost skill but one which is still important. Make it a bit more fun by going orienteering. Create an easy compass course and see how well the family follows directions.

Cook up a treat

If you are lucky enough to have a big campfire blazing away at night don’t waste the opportunity and cook up some camp favourites. The classic damper is a great option, otherwise toasting marshmallows while sharing stories is the perfect way to unwind at night. Or you can create s’mores, an American favourite of marshmallows and chocolate sandwiched between crackers.

Ghost stories

Even the most disinterested grandkids will be engrossed with a night time session of ghost stories around the campfire. Engulfed in the blackness of night with not much signs of civility, the scare factor is heightened. If nobody can think of any good ones (we recommend you have some prepared to scare everyone!) or the grandkids are too young, play the game where everyone contributes a sentence which slowly builds an often outrageous and hilarious tale.

Mum breaks down after people make fun of her baby’s name

A tearful mum-fluencer has taken to TikTok to call out the “cruel” adults making fun of her son’s name.

Liana Jade and her partner Connor Darlington often post videos about their lifestyle, pregnancy and parenting, racking up over 2.7 million followers on Youtube.

The couple have an eight-month-old son, with an unusual name that is meaningful to them- Koazy, pronounced “cosy”.

Jade was minding her business when it was brought to her attention that people had mentioned her son’s name in another influencer’s video.

In an episode of The Unplanned Podcast hosted by US couple Matt and Abby Howard, the pair discussed unusual baby names and said that quirky choices for baby names in 2023 were becoming “ridiculous”.

They also mentioned that it’s not a great idea to name your child something quirky, especially when they become adults.

Although they didn’t mention Koazy’s name specifically, the people in their comment section were more relentless, as they began ripping at Koazy’s name.

Visibly upset, Jade posted her own TikTok and explained why she chose that name.

“People have said we called him Koazy because he was cosy in the womb,” she said.

“But no. It was a name we already had and as I was getting so heavily pregnant, people were saying ‘he’s so cosy in your belly’.

“It confirmed to us that is what we should name him... we were like ‘Oh my God, it’s meant to be’.”

Jade also mentioned that she understood Koazy’s name wasn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea and that “everyone is entitled to their own opinion”.

“But it’s just different when there’s this comment section open on such a big influencer’s video of people, fully grown adults, just sat there slandering my baby’s name.

“I think it’s quite cruel – and if I had posted that video personally, I think I would have been very mindful of who was being named and how that can have an effect on other people,” she said.

Jade’s TikTok has since gone viral with over 6.8 million views, and fans have supported her right to name her child whatever she liked.

“Koazy is a lovely name,” one person wrote.

“Everyone has an opinion, but a name is personal to the parents who chose it and shouldn’t be judged by anyone else. Stay strong,” commented another.

The Howards have since turned the comments off their podcast.

Image: Instagram, TikTok

Get two for the price of one with top ways to have fun and keep active

Physical activity is a key factor in a person’s health at any age, and experts have long preached the physical benefits of keeping fit.

However, as good things often come in pairs, it’s always important to note that while exercise can mean excellent things physically - from preventing certain health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases to benefiting mental health - it comes with the additional bonus of introducing people to like-minded souls. This socialisation is especially important towards tackling boredom and the loneliness that comes along with isolation.

As life goes on, it may become harder to take part in the activities of youth - sports, for example, are not so kind to older joints. This by no means limits what someone can and cannot try out, with plenty of options still available for those who dream of keeping active and having some fun along the way.

Community centres

Community/leisure centres and senior clubs feature a whole host of activities on their calendars, and a quick Google search will reveal the closest ones on offer. With many covering everything from sports to hiking, dancing, art classes, and new learning opportunities, these can prove a great way to gain a new skill and make some new friends in the process.

New hobbies

On a similar note, picking up a new hobby can introduce you to a whole host of people with the same interests, especially if you find a group or community page to share your newfound enthusiasm. You’ll pick up new tips and tricks faster, and with your new social circle, may even find a second or third hobby to dabble in. A local walking group could even introduce you to new spots in your area that you’d never even heard of - or perhaps even a post-trek coffee shop to enjoy a well-deserved pastry. And, of course, bowling never goes amiss, nor a little competitive spirit when it comes to forging new bonds and a drive to improve.

Gardening

Not only does gardening provide fresh air and exercise, but if you play your cards right (or water your crops right) you could find yourself with a garden that’s the envy of the whole neighbourhood, or one that’s fully self-sufficient to save you a few dollars on your next trip to the supermarket. Weeding, watering, mowing, and planting are just some of the productive tasks to leave you feeling proud of your hard work that also have the added benefit of counting towards your exercise goal for the day - you probably just won’t realise it at the time.

Play

Grandchildren and pets provide the perfect opportunity for some free and entertaining physical activity, even if sometimes they might move a little too quickly for comfort. From pushing the youngest in strollers, to taking a dog on a leisurely walk around the block, there are ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and get some steps in the process. And if all else fails, a game of hide-and-seek in the backyard or living room can’t steer you wrong.

Images: Getty

“Fun until it wasn’t”: Grant Denyer takes smiling selfie moments before disaster

Former Sunrise presenter Grant Denyer has taken to Instagram to report that he was involved in a disastrous biking accident.

Grant, who has been training ahead of the 2023 Bathurst 12 Hour race this weekend, was with friend and training partner Mick when they ran into trouble.

Despite dubbing the incident a “huge stack”, it seems no real injury was sustained, with Denyer’s sharing a light hearted take with his 408k followers.

“No joke, 2 mins after this photo we had a huge stack doing wheelies and clipping handlebars,” he captioned the image. The photo in question features Grant and Mick on their bikes, cycling along a country road, with big smiles on each of their faces.

“D*ckheads,” Grant said of the pair, and added that they were “putting in the big yards for the @bathurst12hr this weekend. Doing a lot of riding. New to it. As our crash proves … Thx Mick from @bathurstaquapark for being a great training partner. Most of the time”.

Grant’s post was met with great amusement from his followers, with most making fun of the situation along with him. It didn’t seem to phase Grant, who met their comments with lighthearted jokes of his own.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Grant Denyer (@grantdenyer)

“Two hands for beginners, legend,” wrote one.

“Yeah um…. These little legs work HARD”.

Mick, Grant’s riding partner, came up in a few of the comments, and Grant made sure to praise his skill while still poking some fun at the whole situation.

“He’s a wildcat that’s for sure! A beast on the bike.” He said of his training partner, “bloody talented at everything. Except keeping to himself”.

Grant, who has quite the history with motorsports under his belt, will still be participating in the Bathurst 12 hour, an international endurance race that will span Friday through to Sunday.

Images: Instagram

Why is cheese so stinky?

For those who partake, cheese can be one of the most delicious, yet sometimes stinky, parts of a good meal. Everything from a charcutier board to a pizza becomes infinitely better with some cheese.

But cheese has some deep, dark secrets in its yellow interior – and most of them involve large quantities of mould.

How did we even get cheese in the first place?

Researchers think that we’ve been eating cheese for a very long time. In 2018, archaeologists discovered pieces of ancient pottery in modern day Croatia that had fatty acid residues on it that could have been cheese.

The team suggested that these early farmers could have been eating cheese from at least 7,200 years ago. To put that in perspective, that’s at least three thousand years before the first Egyptian dynasty.

Unfortunately, scientists don’t know what that sort of cheese would have been like, but the evidence suggests that many early cheeses were like cottage cheese.

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, cheese could have been an accidental discovery. Rennet – a group of enzymes located in sheep or cow stomachs – cause milk to curdle. If a cow or sheep’s stomach was used for milk transportation, the rennet will start the process of cheese-making and create curds and whey. This dairy-like substance is heading in the direction of cheese.

How do we make cheese?

Today’s cheese making is pretty similar to how they did it back then – but with a lot more microbes added to the process.

Instead of rennet to curdle the milk, today many producers use chymosin – which is the chief enzyme in rennet. If you genetically engineer the yeast by inserting rennet genes from animals into the yeast genome they’ll happily pump out chymosin for all our cheese making needs. But be warned, you’ll need vats of the stuff.

Whey is not really used in cheese making, but the curds are where the cheese process really starts.

These blobs of a white, kind of squeaky substance is then processed into different forms to make different cheeses. Mozzarella is stretched and kneaded to its dough-like texture, while cheddar undergoes ‘cheddaring’ – a process where curds are stacked on top of each other to push out moisture and create a harder, denser cheese.

For other cheeses, there’s a secret ingredient missing – microbes. Many different varieties need to go through a process of ‘ripening’, where microbes, like fungi and bacteria, are added to the base cheese and then left to sit.

Brie and camembert get sprayed with Penicillium camemberti mould and left from four to five weeks to get their white outside and soft squishy interior.

Blue cheese, on the other hand is injected with spores from Penicillium roqueforti to be able to create those blue veins of mould.

But these moulds all pale in comparison to a particularly stinky type of bacteria called Brevibacterium linens. This bacterium is used to ferment particularly funky cheeses like Munster, but it’s also the bacteria which causes human foot odour. Just think about that next time you’re having some cheese on crackers!

Cheese dreams?

It’s a commonly-held belief that eating cheese can give you nightmares.

And in fact, scientists have put this to the test. A 2005 study – conducted by the British Cheese Board – asked participants to eat 20 grams of cheese half an hour before going to bed every night for a week. When they woke up, they immediately wrote down any dreams.

Participant were assigned a type of cheese: stilton, cheddar, red Leicester, British brie, Lancashire and Cheshire.

None of the 200 volunteers reported having nightmares, but delightfully, 83 per cent of the participants that ate red Leicester had pleasant dreams.

Cheddar, on the other hand, led to dreams about celebrities, while Cheshire led to no dreams more than half of the time.

Although this study is heaps of fun, we can’t comment on the scientific rigor of the British Cheese Board, so you should probably take the story with a grain of salt.

If you want even more cheesy facts, find out about raw cheese, and endure plenty of cheese puns, keep an ear out for a whole episode on cheese for the ‘Huh? Science Explained’ podcast on the LISTNR app, or anywhere you get your podcasts.

This article originally appeared on Cosmos.

Tips on how to take a great profile picture

It’s not all about looks but a profile picture says a thousand words in the online dating world. It’s what draws someone in to read your profile and who knows what can happen after that. Choosing the perfect pic can be a daunting task – that many people unfortunately get wrong – so we’ve got some top tips to help put your best photo forward and ensure you don’t upload anything cringe-worthy.

Lighting

Make sure you take your photo in a well-lit area so people can see your face clearly. Nobody looks nice in the shadows – and people will tend to think you’re hiding something if they cannot clearly see you. Try and take the picture outside as natural light is much more flattering than indoor lighting.

Right distance

You don’t want to be so far away in the photo that people can’t see you clearly – that defeats the purpose of a profile picture.

Make eye contact

The old saying – the eyes are the window to a person soul – rings true for profile pictures. Eye contact is important for establishing a connection even online. Making eye contact through a picture says that you’re open, welcoming and helps someone engage with your picture.

Use a proper camera

These days it’s never been easier to take a photo especially with our smartphones and tablets. However, often the quality isn’t the best when you upload it onto a computer. Use a digital camera and take plenty of options. People often despair after a few shots but in our wonderful world of technology, take a few dozen photos until you find the one you like.

Dress to impress

This doesn’t mean expensive or flashy clothing, simply choose clothes that you are comfortable and feel great in. If you feel good, you will look good in your photos! Steer clear of clothes with big and busy patterns though as they can distract potential dates from the real subject of the photo – you. No hats or sunglasses either.

Relax and smile!

Feeling comfortable is key to taking a great photo. Get a good friend to take the photo for you and distract yourself by having a conversation. Don’t focus on having the photo taken and you’ll get a relaxed and natural looking picture. However, the most important thing is to smile! Nothing is more attractive than a big warm smile.

Image: Getty

As the internet banded together to create memes and art out of Scott Morrison's secret ministerial roles, the former PM thought he would join in the fun.

After the news broke of ScoMo secretly appointing himself to at least five ministries without the public's knowledge while he was prime minister, businesses, artists, journalists, and internet fiends alike started rolling out the memes of Morrison working different roles.

But the barrage of sarcasm came to a screeching halt on Thursday night, when the opposition backbencher joined in.

The Member for Cook's official Facebook page went on a commenting spree, replying to more than a dozen memes from Aussie companies welcoming him to their team.

"It's been fun joining in on all the memes. 8 fun facts about the world’s most beautiful waterfalls

The site of an emergency plane landing

Dropping 980 metres from the top of the Auyán-Tepuí plateau (or ‘Devil’s Mountain’ in English), Angel Falls is the tallest waterfall in the world. Located in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, Angel Falls is named after the adventurous American pilot Jimmy Angel who emergency landed his aeroplane there in 1937. The plane remained there for 33 years, and although the original is now in an aviation museum, Angel Falls’ visitors can still find a replica plane placed on top of the plateau today.

The thousand-year-old (and then some) waterfall

As one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls, horseshoe-shaped Godafoss features water rushing down a cliff measuring 12 metres high and 30 metres wide. Godafoss, meaning Waterfall of the Gods, got its name in the year 1000 when Iceland was converting from pagan religious beliefs to Christianity. The story goes that Iceland’s chieftain at the time, Thorgeir, threw statues of the heathen gods into the waterfall, symbolising the switch to Christianity and giving the falls their name.

The tallest waterfall in Central Europe

Nestled in Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park, Krimml Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Central Europe, reaching a height of 380 metres. The water originates at Krimmler Ache, a glacial creek that serves as the source of the falls, and plummets over three tiers of rock formations. A one and a half hour hike up the falls brings you to Bergerblick, the highest point that offers the most spectacular views of the falls below.

A waterfall watched over by Buddha

The Detian Falls can be found cascading 75 metres over the Guichun River on the border of China and Vietnam. Depending on the time of year, the amount of water travelling down the waterfall will range from a full-speed rush in the humid months of June and July to a more gentle splash in the drier seasons. To complement the peaceful surroundings of rice paddies and rock formations, a tiny Buddhist shrine sits atop the falls.

“Poor Niagara!”

Although the majority of the Iguazu Falls are located in Argentina, many say you can find a better overall view from the Brazilian side. They can be accessed through any of the three cities in the tri-border area between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Iguazu Falls are taller and twice as wide as Niagara Falls and it has been said that when Eleanor Roosevelt saw these falls for the first time she exclaimed, “Poor Niagara!”

It’s in the oldest state park in the US

Niagara Falls State Park, designed by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, is the oldest state park in the US, established in 1885. Niagara Falls is sourced by the Niagara River which is supplied by water from Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Erie, four of the five Great Lakes, allowing 3160 tons of water to flow over Niagara Falls each second. The iconic falls were first seen and described in 1678 by Father Louis Hennepin on an exploring expedition in the Niagara region.

They’re actually interconnected waterfalls

The Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia is world-famous for its series of 16 interconnected, breathtaking lakes, caves and waterfalls. The park features two main waterfalls: the Large Waterfall at the end of the lower lakes, and the Galovac Waterfall at the end of the upper lakes. But what makes this park so unique and beautiful are the formations of many smaller waterfalls that flow throughout the series of lakes through naturally created mossy cascades.

It separates itself each summer

Koosah Falls are one of three major waterfalls along the McKenzie River in Oregon, USA. Although there has been some dispute over the true height of the waterfall, with measurements ranging from 16 to 36 metres, the true height is said to be around 20 metres. The appearance of Koosah Falls changes dramatically from season to season, in the summer it appears as being two separate segments, but during the height of snow melting in the winter, water spreads seamlessly across the 20 metre wide ledge

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Image: Shutterstock
