Strength training has a range of benefits for women. Here are 4 ways to get into weights

Erin Kelly, University of Canberra

Picture a gym ten years ago: the weights room was largely a male-dominated space, with women mostly doing cardio exercise. Fast-forward to today and you’re likely to see women of all ages and backgrounds confidently navigating weights equipment.

This is more than just anecdotal. According to data from the Australian Sports Commission, the number of women participating in weightlifting (either competitively or not) grew nearly five-fold between 2016 and 2022.

Women are discovering what research has long shown: strength training offers benefits beyond sculpted muscles.

Health benefits

Osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones become weak and brittle, affects more women than men. Strength training increases bone density, a crucial factor for preventing osteoporosis, especially for women negotiating menopause.

Strength training also improves insulin sensitivity, which means your body gets better at using insulin to manage blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Regular strength training contributes to better heart health too.

There’s a mental health boost as well. Strength training has been linked to reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Improved confidence and body image

Unlike some forms of exercise where progress can feel elusive, strength training offers clear and tangible measures of success. Each time you add more weight to a bar, you are reminded of your ability to meet your goals and conquer challenges.

This sense of achievement doesn’t just stay in the gym – it can change how women see themselves. A recent study found women who regularly lift weights often feel more empowered to make positive changes in their lives and feel ready to face life’s challenges outside the gym.

Strength training also has the potential to positively impact body image. In a world where women are often judged on appearance, lifting weights can shift the focus to function.

Instead of worrying about the number on the scale or fitting into a certain dress size, women often come to appreciate their bodies for what they can do. “Am I lifting more than I could last month?” and “can I carry all my groceries in a single trip?” may become new measures of physical success.

Lifting weights can also be about challenging outdated ideas of how women “should” be. Qualitative research I conducted with colleagues found that, for many women, strength training becomes a powerful form of rebellion against unrealistic beauty standards. As one participant told us:

I wanted something that would allow me to train that just didn’t have anything to do with how I looked.

Society has long told women to be small, quiet and not take up space. But when a woman steps up to a barbell, she’s pushing back against these outdated rules. One woman in our study said:

We don’t have to […] look a certain way, or […] be scared that we can lift heavier weights than some men. Why should we?

This shift in mindset helps women see themselves differently. Instead of worrying about being objects for others to look at, they begin to see their bodies as capable and strong. Another participant explained:

Powerlifting changed my life. It made me see myself, or my body. My body wasn’t my value, it was the vehicle that I was in to execute whatever it was that I was executing in life.

This newfound confidence often spills over into other areas of life. As one woman said:

I love being a strong woman. It’s like going against the grain, and it empowers me. When I’m physically strong, everything in the world seems lighter.

Feeling inspired? Here’s how to get started

1. Take things slow

Begin with bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges and push-ups to build a foundation of strength. Once you’re comfortable, add external weights, but keep them light at first. Focus on mastering compound movements, such as deadlifts, squats and overhead presses. These exercises engage multiple joints and muscle groups simultaneously, making your workouts more efficient.

2. Prioritise proper form

Always prioritise proper form over lifting heavier weights. Poor technique can lead to injuries, so learning the correct way to perform each exercise is crucial. To help with this, consider working with an exercise professional who can provide personalised guidance and ensure you’re performing exercises correctly, at least initially.

3. Consistency is key

Like any fitness regimen, consistency is key. Two to three sessions a week are plenty for most women to see benefits. And don’t be afraid to occupy space in the weights room – remember you belong there just as much as anyone else.

4. Find a community

Finally, join a community. There’s nothing like being surrounded by a group of strong women to inspire and motivate you. Engaging with a supportive community can make your strength-training journey more enjoyable and rewarding, whether it’s an in-person class or an online forum.

Are there any downsides?

Gym memberships can be expensive, especially for specialist weightlifting gyms. Home equipment is an option, but quality barbells and weightlifting equipment can come with a hefty price tag.

Also, for women juggling work and family responsibilities, finding time to get to the gym two to three times per week can be challenging.

If you’re concerned about getting too “bulky”, it’s very difficult for women to bulk up like male bodybuilders without pharmaceutical assistance.

The main risks come from poor technique or trying to lift too much too soon – issues that can be easily avoided with some guidance.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Aldi launches fancy new range beloved by Adele and the Beckhams

ALDI Australia is about to introduce a fancy homewares range that has the Beckhams and Adele collectively nodding in approval.

Yes, you heard it right – ALDI, the place where you normally hunt for discounted Vegemite and budget-friendly meats – is stepping into the world of high-end homewares. Prepare your wallets and your finest monocles, because the supermarket chain has joined forces with the UK's luxury juggernaut, Liberty, to create a line of exclusive designer goodies. Christmas just got a whole lot bougier!

Set to hit shelves on November 29, this collaboration promises to bring a touch of sophistication to your life – without forcing you to auction off your grandmother's vintage tea set to afford it. The range includes 12 new products, each bearing Liberty's iconic print designs. And with prices starting at a jaw-dropping $2.99, you might need a moment to let that sink in. We'll wait.

Belinda Grice, ALDI Australia’s buying director of Special Buys, expressed her excitement, saying, "It’s so exciting to bring an extra touch of luxury to our customers. A high-quality product at an affordable price is what we do best, so this collaboration with Liberty is a match made in heaven."

It's basically like finding a caviar-flavoured chip in your bag of mixed nuts.

The range includes everything from candles to notebooks, diaries, hand creams, teapots, diffusers, soap bars and probably a golden unicorn or two. It's a cornucopia of poshness. We imagine this is the sort of stuff the Queen used to take notes during her royal corgi tea parties.

For British expats Down Under, this is the homecoming they never knew they needed. It's a bit like getting a surprise visit from King Charles himself, only instead of royal decrees, he bears scented candles and aesthetically pleasing teapots.

But wait, there's more! ALDI is not just here to elevate your home decor game; it's also here to sprinkle some goodness in the world. Ten percent of Liberty’s proceeds from the collection will go to support Camp Quality, an organisation on a mission to bring joy, fun and laughter back into the lives of kids facing cancer. So not only can you deck out your living room like a Buckingham Palace waiting room, but you can also feel good about it. It's a win-win situation, or as the posh say, a "triumphantly exquisite dichotomy".

As we gear up for the holiday season, let's raise a teacup to ALDI for making luxury accessible to all. Who needs a silver spoon when you can have a $2.99 Liberty teapot? Just remember, the next time someone questions your taste, you can proudly declare, "It's ALDI x Liberty, darling. Look it up."

Images: Getty / ALDI

The rental housing crisis is hurting our most vulnerable and demands a range of solutions (but capping rents isn’t one of them)

Andrew Beer, University of South Australia and Emma Baker, University of Adelaide

Roughly one in three Australians rent their homes. It’s Australia’s fastest-growing tenure, but renting is increasingly unaffordable. From 2020 to 2022, our research found a large increase in the proportion of renters who said their housing was unaffordable.

Change in Australian renters’ assessments of affordability from 2020 to 2022. Baker, Daniel, Beer, et al, forthcoming, The Australian Housing Conditions Dataset, doi:10.26193/SLCU9J, ADA Dataverse

Australians are concerned about the pace of rent rises. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says increasing housing supply and affordability is the “key priority” for tomorrow’s national cabinet meeting.

The crisis has impacts well beyond affordability. The rental sector is where the worst housing accommodates the poorest Australians with the worst health.

The unhealthy state of rental housing

Forthcoming data from the Australian Housing Conditions Dataset highlight some of these parallel challenges:

it’s often insecure – the average lease is less than 12 months, and less than a third of formal rental agreements extend beyond 12 months

rental housing quality is often very poor – 45% of renters rate the condition of their dwelling as “average, poor, or very poor”

poor housing conditions put the health of renters at risk – 43% report problems with damp or mould, and 35% have difficulty keeping their homes warm in winter or cool in summer

compounding these health risks, people with poorer health are over-represented in the rental sector. Renters are almost twice as likely as mortgage holders to have poorer general health.

Measures that potentially restrict the supply of lower-cost rental housing – such as rent caps – will worsen these impacts. More households will be left searching in a shrinking pool of affordable housing.

It’s all about supply

Fixing the rental crisis needs more than a single focus on private rental housing. The movement between households over time between renting and buying homes means the best solutions are those that boost the supply of affordable housing generally. No one policy can provide all the answers.

Governments should be looking at multiple actions, including:

requiring local councils to adopt affordable housing strategies as well as mandating inclusionary zoning, which requires developments to include a proportion of affordable homes

improving land supply through better forecasting at the national, state and local levels

giving housing and planning ministers the power to deliver affordable housing targets by providing support for demonstration projects, subsidised land to social housing providers and access to surplus land

boosting the recruitment and retention of skilled construction workers from both domestic and international sources.

The biggest landlord subsidy isn’t helping

More than 1 million Australians claim a net rent loss (negative gearing) each year. Even though negative gearing is focused on rental investment losses, it is not strictly a housing policy as it applies to many types of investment.

The impact of negative gearing on the housing system is untargeted and largely uncontrolled. As a result, it’s driving outcomes that are sometimes at odds with the need to supply well-located affordable housing.

The most impactful action the Australian government could take to deliver more affordable rental housing nationwide would involve refining negative-gearing arrangements to boost the supply of low-income rentals. These measures may involve

limiting negative gearing to dwellings less than ten years old

introducing a low-income tax credit scheme similar to the one in the United States.

We can learn much from the US, where the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) scheme subsidises the acquisition, construction and renovation of affordable rental housing for tenants on low to moderate incomes. Since the mid-1990s, the program has supported the construction or renovation of about 110,000 affordable rental units each year. That adds up to over 2 million units at an estimated annual cost of US$9billion (A$13.8billion).

This scheme is much less expensive per unit of affordable housing delivered than Australia’s system of negative gearing.

Closer to home, the previous National Rental Affordability Scheme showed the value of targeted financial incentives in encouraging affordable housing. This scheme, available to private and disproved investors, generated positive outcomes for tenants. The benefits included better health for low-income tenants who were able to moved into quality new housing.

A raft of evaluations have demonstrated the achievements of this scheme.

Crisis calls for lasting solutions

Short-term measures such as rent caps or eviction bans will not provide a solution in the near future or even the medium or long term. Instead, these are likely to worsen both the housing costs and health of low-income tenants.

Reform focused on ongoing needs is called for. Solutions that can be implemented quickly include the tighter targeting of negative gearing and the introduction of a low-income housing tax credit.

Talking about change, as the national cabinet is doing, will begin that process of transformation, but it must be backed up by a range of measures to boost the supply of affordable housing. This, in turn, will improve the housing market overall as affordable options become more widely available.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Bunnings announces barking mad new range

Hardware supergiant Bunnings has unveiled its plan for the “biggest category expansion in 20 years”, to the delight of pet owners nationwide.

In a move sure to set tails wagging, the retailer has declared its pet products range will swell from a few hundred lines to roughly 1000 items.

Pet retail has thrived during the Covid-19 era, and Bunnings’ latest move stands as a challenge to its rival retailers, with the likes of Woolworths having spent $586m in 2022 for a controlling stake in PETstock’s parent company.

Bunnings hopes to have its brand new dedicated pet areas up and running by the end of March, effectively launching the competition for best in show between retail giants.

As Bunnings’ managing director Michael Schneider told The Australian, “what we are going to be bringing to life in our stores over the next four weeks is quite a comprehensive step change in our pet range, probably the biggest category expansion in Bunnings for 20 years.”

The company, which has allowed dogs to enter the shop with their families since 2015, has seen a staggering boost in pets coming by to sniff out the best deals since Australia’s Covid restrictions were lifted, something that Bunnings hopes will encourage people to turn towards their new pet category.

“We have an internal page called Bunnings Pet Spotting,” Schneider said, “we have 10,000 of our team signed up to that page who share photos of dogs and their owners coming into our stores ... our team members like to share the space.

“I think the fact that you are already there with your pet creates a natural habitat for people to come in and shop [for them].”

Schneider went on to discuss that the company is aware of how important pets are to people, and how competitive prices are key for Australians, explaining how “we’ve seen some really significant shifts at a societal level around how we think about four-legged friends in our homes. This is an up to $10 billion category, depending on how you look at it.”

That $10b category has benefited greatly from Australians setting pet ownership records with the puppy pandemic boom, and Bunnings is eager to embrace it.

“Sixty per cent of Australians now own at least one pet,” Schneider said. “It has become a very important part of many, many families across Australia and we think that that connection that people have with the Bunnings brand, bringing those pets into the store, creates a great advantage.”

Despite its enthusiasm, Bunnings has announced that it will be “strategic” about the expansion. Rather than offering the likes of grooming and vet-care as many competitors do, they will keep their attention on necessities with their general merchandise.

One thing is for certain, despite new market competition, the retailer has assured shoppers that they will still have the opportunity to do exactly what they’ve come to expect: fetch a good deal.

Images: Getty

"Kids are quick": Romantic proposal takes wild turn

What was meant to be a beautiful proposal took a turn for the worst when the engagement ring plunged right through the jetty cracks and into the ocean below.

Luke was down on one knee ready to propose to his pregnant girlfriend Stephanie on the Hervey Bay jetty while two-year-old Harper Jane watched on.

But before they saw what was happening, Harper Jane quickly grabbed the engagement ring from the box and it slipped out of her hands.

“Kids are quick, much quicker than you think - I didn’t actually realise she had grabbed it,” Luke said in a TikTok.

Luke called out Harper Jane's name before immediately throwing off his thongs and taking his phone and wallet out of his pocket, ready to jump into the water.

Blindsided in the moment, his friend called out that he couldn’t jump because it was too shallow causing him to change his landing mid way through which left him with an earache.

But Luke was on a mission to find the ring and was excited when he heard Stephanie’s dad call out to say that he could see it.

“I can see it! As countries ranging from Indonesia to Mexico aim to attract digital nomads, locals say ‘not so fast’

Should your community welcome digital nomads – individuals who work remotely, allowing them freedom to bounce from country to country?

Our research has found that workers are eager to embrace the flexibility of not being tied to an office. And after experiencing economic losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cities and countries are concocting ways to entice visitors.

One idea involves stretching the meaning of tourism to include remote workers.

Today, a growing number of countries offer so-called “digital nomad visas.” These visas allow longer stays for remote workers and provide clarity about allowable work activities. For example, officials in Bali, Indonesia, are looking to formalize a process for remote workers to procure visas – “the faster, the better,” as the head of the island’s tourism agency put it.

Yet pushback from locals in cities ranging from Barcelona to Mexico City has made it clear that there are costs and benefits to an influx of remote workers.

As we explain in our new book, “Digital Nomads: In Search of Freedom, Community, and Meaningful Work in the New Economy,” the trend of “work tourism” comes with a host of drawbacks.

Wearing out their welcome

For as long as there’s been tourism, locals have griped about the outsiders who come and go. These travelers are usually a welcome boost to the economy – up to a point. They can also wear out their welcome.

Perhaps the classic example is Venice, where high numbers of tourists stress the canal-filled city’s fragile infrastructure.

In the U.S., New Jersey shore residents have long used the term “shoobies” to denigrate the annual throng of short-term summer tourists. In our research on digital nomads in Bali, locals referred to digital nomads and other tourists as “bules” – a word that roughly translates as “foreigners.”

Generally the terms are used to express minor annoyance over crowds and increased traffic. But conventional tourists come and go – their stays usually range from a couple of nights to a couple of weeks. Remote workers stay anywhere from weeks to months – or longer. They spend more time using places and resources traditionally dedicated to the local residents. This raises the chances that outsiders become a grating presence.

Excessive numbers of visitors can also raise sustainability concerns, as waves of tourists tax the environment and infrastructure of many destinations. Many of Bali’s beautiful rice fields and surrounding lush forests, for example, are being converted into hotels and villas to serve tourism.

Digital nomads look to stretch their dollars

Whether they’re lazing around or plugging away on their laptops, privileged tourists ultimately change the economics and demographics of an area.

Their buying power increases costs and displaces residents, while traditional businesses make way for ones that cater to their tastes. Where once there was a neighborhood food stand, now there’s an upscale cafe.

This dynamic is only exacerbated by long-term tourists. Services like VRBO and Airbnb make it easy for digital nomads to rent apartments for weeks or months at a time, and people around the world are increasingly alarmed at how quickly such rentals can change the affordability and character of a place.

Living a vacation lifestyle on a long-term basis implies a need to choose lower-cost destinations. This means that remote workers may particularly contribute to gentrification as they seek out places where their dollars go furthest.

In Mexico City, residents fear displacement by remote workers able to pay higher rents. In response to calls to choose Mexico City as a remote working destination, one local succinctly expressed opposition: “Please don’t.”

And in New Orleans, almost half of all properties in the historic Tremé district – one of the oldest Black neighborhoods in the U.S. – have been converted to short-term rentals, displacing longtime residents.

Culture becomes commodified

Neocolonialism in tourism refers to the way processes such as overtourism and gentrification create a power imbalance that favors newcomers and erodes local ways of life.

“There’s a distinction between people who want to learn about the place they are in and those who just like it because it’s cheap,” one digital nomad living in Mexico City recently told the Los Angeles Times. “I’ve met a number of people who don’t really care that they’re in Mexico, they just care that it’s cheap.”

Bali, where as much as 80% of the island’s economy is estimated to be affected by tourism, offers a stark example.

People come to Bali to be immersed in the culture’s spiritual rituals, art, nature and dance. But there’s also resentment over yoga lovers, resortgoers and digital nomads “taking over” the island. And some locals come to see the tourism in and around temples and rituals as the transformation of something cherished – the nuanced and spiritual aspects of their culture – into experiences to be bought and sold.

For instance, Balinese dance performances are huge tourist draws and are even featured in global promotions for tourism on the island. Yet these performances also have cultural and spiritual meaning, and the impact of tourism on these aspects of dance is debated even among performers.

So there is inevitably friction, which can be seen in the high levels of petty crimeagainst foreigners. Neocolonialism can also pit people from the same country or culture against one another. For example, conflicts arise between local Balinese taxi cooperatives and taxi services that employ drivers from other parts of Indonesia.

Although remote employees still make up a small portion of the overall tourist population, their work-related needs and longer stays mean they’re more likely to use services and places frequented by locals.

Whether this leads digital nomads to be welcomed or scorned likely depends on both government policies and tourists’ behavior.

Will governments take measures such as protecting locals from mass evictions, or will landlords’ desire for higher rents prevail? Will guests live lightly and blend in, trying to learn the local language and culture? Or will they simply focus on working hard and playing harder?

As remote work reaches an unprecedented scale, the answers to such questions may determine whether “the faster, the better” attitude toward digital nomad visas and other incentives continues.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Loyal to the end: touching detail surrounding Symonds' tragedy

The cricket world is in mourning following the devastating death of legendary player Andrew Symonds.

The 46-year-old died on Saturday night after his car veered off the road in a single vehicle accident near his home in Hervey Range, in the city of Townsville, Queensland.

Two witnesses who were first on scene following the awful accident have given more insight into what happened – including the fact that Symonds' two very loyal Blue Heelers were also in the vehicle at the time.

“One of them was very sensitive and didn’t want to leave him,” the unnamed witness told Courier Mail.

“It would just growl at you every time we tried to move him or go near him. My partner tried to get (Symonds) out of the car, to put him on to his back.

“He was unconscious, not responsive and had no pulse.”

Waylon Townson was another witness and told 9News that Symonds had no pulse when he tried to help.

"He was stuck in there, so I tried to pull him out," he said.

"(I) started doing CPR and checked his pulse but I didn't get much response."

Police continue to investigate the incident which has seen Symonds leave behind a wife and two kids.

Symonds’ wife Laura has spoken out since his death saying the family is still in “shock” and described him as “the most laid-back person”.

“I’m just thinking of the two kids. He was such a big person and there is just so much of him in his kids,” she said.

“Nothing stressed him out. He was an extremely chilled operator. So practical.

“He was never good with his phone but he always had time for everyone."

Images: Instagram

I Am Woman is Helen Reddy’s story

When Helen Reddy Reddy came out and sang I Am Woman nearly 50 years ago, the world listened. Like most songs, there was an important story behind it and the film, I Am Woman tells that story in fascinating detail.

It does seem strange that no-one had told Helen Reddy’s story on the big screen before. Sure, Reddy did write a book about her life titled, The Woman I Am, but to date, we haven’t had a film about this iconic Australian singer-songwriter and Grammy-award winning artist.

Not only is Reddy one of the most successful performing artists ever to emerge from Australia, she’s also the person who co-wrote and sang the song that went on to become the anthem for the women’s movement in the 1970s – I Am Woman.

The film I am Woman tells the full story

Released earlier in 2020, the film about Reddy’s life is now streaming on Stan.

Made by the producers of The Sapphires, I Am Woman was directed by Unjoo Moon and shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe. Australian actor, Tilda Cobham-Hervey stars as Reddy and American actor, Evan Peters, stars as Reddy’s husband, Jeff Wald.

It’s an inspiring story because Reddy, who arrived in New York in 1966 with $230 in her pocket and her three-year-old daughter on her arm, went on to have incredible success as a singer in both the American market and then, worldwide.

It wasn’t long before she ran out of money but five years later, she was one of the biggest superstars of her time. She became an icon of the 1970s feminist movement by co-writing a song which galvanised a generation of women to fight for change.

Arrived in New York with $230 in her pocket

Helen Reddy arrived in New York in 1966 with $230 in her pocket and her three-year-old daughter, Tracy, on her arm.

Reddy traveled to America because she’d been told she’d won a recording contract, but when she goes to see the record company about it, she’s met with blatant sexism and a dismissal of her work as a female artist.

Without a visa, Reddy decides to stay in New York anyway and pursue a singing career, struggling to make ends meet and provide for her daughter. She befriends fellow Australian and legendary rock journalist, Lillian Roxon and later, it’s Roxon who inspires her to write and sing the iconic song, I Am Woman.

Roxon holds a party for her and it’s there Reddy meets Jeff Wald, a young aspiring talent manager who later becomes her agent and husband. Reddy’s story unfolds as she marries Wald and they move to LA so he can help her get the breaks she needs. But it’s not easy and Reddy has to persuade him to keep pushing her.

In the end, Wald helps her achieve her goals, but it’s not enough to save their marriage because he becomes addicted to cocaine and this gradually turns their relationship toxic.

I am Woman becomes an anthem

Reddy writes her iconic song, I Am Woman, during this time when she’s trying so hard to be heard as a musical artist in America. At exactly the same time, the Women’s Liberation Movement was at its peak.

Reddy has said She was looking for songs that reflected a positive self-image that she felt she had gained from her participation in the women's liberation movement. She’s been reported as saying she was looking for the right song and she couldn’t find it, so she knew she had to write it herself.

She worked on the song with another song writer, Ray Burton, and together they came up with I am Woman. It became the perfect unofficial anthem and was a smash hit at the same time. Of course, the song upset some of the men who said it was “angry” or even “man-hating.”

Reddy sang many popular songs after this one but she didn’t write many more, which would seem to be a pity.

The film is largely and Australian production

The film, I Am Woman, is a Goalpost Pictures production in association with Deep Blue Pacific. It had funding from Screen Australia, in association with WestEnd Films, Screen NSW, Adelaide Film Festival and South Australian Film Corporation.

The film premiered in Sydney about a year and a half ago, with the director, Unjoo Moon, and the Australian actor, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who played Reddy in the film.

At the premiere, Unjoo Moon said she was thrilled to be there because: “It’s deeply meaningful to me that the release of Helen Reddy’s inspirational story, I Am Woman, will kick off in Australia. Not only did Helen’s story begin in Australia but so did our journey of making this movie.”

Moon continued, saying her inspiration for the film came from her early years: “I remember so clearly, when I was a young girl growing up on the north shore here in Sydney. I wasn’t old enough to have been at a Helen Reddy concert but I remember what would happen when her music came on the radio. I’d be sitting in the back seat of the station wagon and the windows would get rolled down and everyone’s hair would come out – and I knew she just had this kind of impact on my mother and her friends,” said Moon.

This film still has so much relevance today

Some reviewers have said this film about Reddy’s life is timely for our current situation because it gives us historical background to issues which are still relevant to feminist discussions today.

While it appeals to a specific audience – those women who grew up with Reddy’s songs as background to their lives and their children – it’s still interesting for younger women who may not know about these events.

For the women and their children who lived through the 1970s, watching Reddy sing her songs on the big screen would be a deeply personal and rewarding experience.

For those who are younger and don’t know Reddy’s songs as well, it’s probably enough to learn about how these songs gave women inspiration for their feminist cause – and how Reddy will always hold a special place in their hearts for the role she played as a strong and successful woman.

Helen Reddy passed away in September 2020

Helen Reddy was able to see the film, I Am Woman in 2020 but sadly, she passed away on September 29, 2020.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother,” her daughter Traci and son Jordan posted on Facebook.

“She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and a truly formidable woman.

You can watch I Am Woman now on Stan.

Take a look at our list and you’ll see there’s something for you – whether it’s a beach holiday, an outback adventure or a tropical paradise.

Bucket List No. 1: Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

The Great Barrier Reef is a living work of art so large - it can be seen from out at space. The 2,300-kilometre-long ecosystem, stretching from Fraser Island in the south to the Torres Strait in the north, is made up of thousands of vibrant reefs surrounding hundreds of white sand islands. It’s listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world and it’s also the world’s biggest single structure made from living organisms.

You can go snorkelling with amazing tropical fish on the Great Barrier Reef because this world heritage-listed destination is home to 600 types of hard and soft coral, thousands of tropical fish, turtles, sharks and dolphins.

Bucket List No. 2: The Kimberley, Western Australia

Known as one of the world’s last wild frontiers at the north-western end of Australia, the scenery at the Kimberley is breathtaking. The region is three times larger than England, yet only 40,000 Aussies call it home.

Instead, the Kimberley is home to a large range of Australian wildlife in amongst the rolling red sandhills, ancient canyons, breathtaking gorges, serene swimming holes and outback stations.

When you’re ready to relax, head to Cable Beach - a 22-kilometre-long stretch of white sands located in the beach town of Broome. You can ride off into the sunset atop a camel. Or if you’d prefer a more outback experience, stay in the more inland town of Kununurra.

Bucket List No. 3: Uluru, Northern Territory

Uluru usually is often cited as Australia’s number one bucket list destination. This is because there’s nothing more Australian than visiting Uluru. You’ll be awed by the rich red desert sands, champagne-worthy sunsets, the incredible spiritual presence and let’s facit it – this is an outback journey every Aussie should make.

The 350-metre-high structure is shrouded in ancient folklore, Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and rock art dating tens of thousands of years. There are many ways to experience the majesty of Uluru. You can take a walking tour with an Aboriginal guide so you can really appreciate the grand scale of this impressive icon.

Right now, the Field of Light illuminates Uluru as darkness falls. This is a lighting display set up around Uluru by artist, Bruce Munro. It’s an amazing sight to see the gentle rhythms of colour lighting up the desert and this display has now been extended indefinitely.

While you’re at Uluru, you can take a quick trip (only 30 kilometres) to Kata Tjuta – also known as The Olgas – and gaze at this group of large, ancient rock formations.

Bucket List No. 4: The Whitsundays, Queensland

If your idea of a bucket list holiday means tropical cocktails by the pool, picnics on secluded beaches and sunsets to die for, then the Whitsundays is the perfect place for you. Stay at world famous Hamilton Island or one of the regions smaller island resorts, such as Daydream Island or Heron island.

As well, you can island-hop your way around the stunning Whitsundays because the calm and crystal-clear waters are perfect for sailing. While you’re island-hopping, don’t miss world famous Whitehaven Beach!

Bucket List No. 5: Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory

A short trip outside of Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory, sits Kakadu National Park, home to the oldest living culture on earth and Aboriginal rock art dating back over 25,000 years.

Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park and there’s lots to do including crocodile spotting, enjoying the incredible indigenous history or visiting outback waterfalls and swimming holes (some are safe from the crocs!).

Or you can spend a day or two hiking the waterfall trails, go swimming in boulder creek and then take an indigenous-owned cruise through the world-famous, Yellow Water Billabong. You can even get into the local wildlife spirit and stay at the croc-shaped Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel.

Bucket List No. 6: Margaret River Region, Western Australia

Margaret River is the perfect bucket list destination for food and wine enthusiasts, with hundreds of world class wineries and restaurants in this beautiful pocket of the world.

The best part is this is one of the few Australian wine regions where the vineyards meet the ocean. So, you can spend your mornings at the beach and then take your time in the afternoons to do some wine tasting and feasting on local produce. Bliss!

Bucket List No. 7: Lord Howe Island, NSW

Lord Howe Island is a gorgeous, hidden gem. This tiny little island only ever allows 400 tourists to visit at a time, making you feel like you have the place to yourself. Spend your days hiking, scuba diving, fishing, paddle-boarding or just relaxing on the beach with a good book.

Bucket List No. 8: Wineglass Bay, Tasmania

Relax on what’s been voted one of the Top 10 beaches in the world! Located on Tasmania’s Freycinet Peninsula, this little piece of paradise features pure white sand against a turquoise sea.

Soak up the deserted beaches around the bay, the colourful rocks and delicious local seafood (hint, don’t miss the region’s oysters). The best place to stay is Coles Bay.

Bucket List No. 9: Great Ocean Road, Victoria

Aussies love a good, old-fashioned road trip and the Great Ocean Road is well-known as one of the best. The 46-kilometre-long coastline road winds from Torquay (west of Melbourne) to Allansford and was built originally to honour fallen World War I soldiers.

The road leads to some of Victoria’s most famous landmarks including: The Twelve Apostles; Bells Beach; the famous artist community of Lorne; Otway Treetop Walk and Zipline; the Henty Wine region; Queenscliff where you can swim with dolphins; stay at the charming fishing village of Port Fairy and visit Cape Bridgewater, where you can watch hundreds of fur seals soaking up the sun.

Many people recommend rising early to see the 12 Apostles at sunrise. This is one of Australia’s world-renowned natural wonders, consisting of these 8 monumental limestone pillars which look like they’re drifting out to sea. One of the pillars has fallen down, due to erosion by the waves, but they’re still awe-inspiring.

Bucket List No. 10: Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Kangaroo Island is the perfect place to get away from everything and get back to nature so you can enjoy some of the real Australian landscape – including the flora and fauna.

Nestled off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island will keep you busy as it’s home to plenty of local wildlife - from sea lions, to penguins, echidnas and koalas.

Bucket List No. 11: Fraser Island, Queensland

Even though Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, what you’ll find on there is not your typical island flora and fauna. Boasting lush rainforests, freshwater lakes, creeks and picturesque coastlines – you’ll find a menagerie of native Australian wildlife, including echidnas, possums, sugar gliders, dingoes, snakes, cockatoos and wallabies.

A short ferry ride from the mainland, Fraser Island is the perfect spot for a weekend camping trip filled with fishing, exploring and swimming in crystal clear waters. Make sure you take a run down 75 Mile Beach – it’s a long rugged stretch of sand down the east coast of the island.

Bucket List No. 12: Rottnest Island, Western Australia

A short ferry ride from Perth in Western Australia, Rottnest Island stretches over seven square miles. It’s easy to hire a bike for the day and explore the lush, idyllic landscape at your own pace.

The island is home to just 300 local residents – but apart from people, it’s also home to one very famous marsupial found only in a few locations worldwide - the Quokka. So take your time to catch up with these charming fellows.

Bucket List No. 13: Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

Tasmania has some of the most stunning landscapes in the world and the view from the base of Cradle Mountain, looking across Dove Lake is one of them. As you gaze into the distance, you can see snow-capped peaks reflected in the glassy blue water.

Cradle Mountain is located in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, one mile above sea level. The picturesque mountain can be climbed most of the year but is sometimes dangerous to climb during winter.

Bucket List No. 14: Whale watching in Hervey Bay, Queensland

After months of traveling north along the east coast of Australia, these humpback whales finally reach the sanctuary of Hervey Bay for some well-earned rest and relaxation.

It’s at this time you can often see them swimming around Hervey Bay. The whales use the calm, protected waters around Fraser Island as a calf kindergarten to teach their young a few skills. It’s this phenomenon which saw this area crowned as a Whale Heritage Site at the World Whale Conference in 2019. Best time to visit is from July to November.

Bucket List No. 15: The Three Sisters, NSW

These three weathered sandstone peaks are an iconic formation in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, west of Sydney. Towering more than 900 metres high, they're best viewed from the Echo Point lookout at Katoomba, overlooking the picturesque Jamison Valley.

Aboriginal legend has it they were three sisters who were turned to stone. They are most photogenic at sunrise and sunset. As the sunlight changes throughout the day, it brings out new and different colours against the rocks. The site is also floodlit until around 11pm each evening and you can take a look at the spectacular scene against the black background of the night sky.

Photos: Getty Images
