Aussies reminded to look out for this lifesaving roadside marker

Aussie drivers are being reminded about a little-known roadside marker that could save your life.

As the holiday season approaches, drivers have been reminded of the purpose of the small green circles that appear on roadside reflector poles.

"With the holiday period fast approaching, I wanted to remind residents about green reflectors," federal MP Colin Boyce wrote over the weekend.

"You may have noticed some green reflectors on guide posts beside the road on some highways. These indicate that there is a safe place to pull off the road coming up soon so you can indicate your intentions early and be prepared," he said.

The number of dots indicate the distance between you and the place you can pull over. Three dots mean that drivers are approximately 500 metres from a safe place to pull over, two means you're 250 metres away and one green circle appears just before the area.

"The idea is from road safety advocate and B double truck driver Rod Hannifey, alerting drivers that there is a safe place to pull off the road coming up," the Queensland MP added.

"While the idea was originally intended for long haul truck drivers all road users can use them."

Many Aussies have shared their enthusiasm for the highway initiative, and how important it was for caravan and motorhome drivers especially.

"A lot more people need to know about this. Especially people with caravans," one woman commented.

"Would love this all over Australia! There's nothing worse than driving at night with a screaming baby in the back who wants a feed and not knowing if it's a safe place to pull over," another said.

Others have shared that they hadn't noticed the markings or realise what it meant.

"Have asked a few people recently if they knew what these reflectors stood for, and not one knew. Explanation followed. Should be a compulsory question asked of caravaners," one local wrote.

"One of the world's best kept secrets! Thanks," another said.

Images: Truck Friendly/ Yahoo

"Thank god you're here": Couple rescued after 3-day ordeal

A couple in their 50s have been rescued after spending days stranded in Queensland.

The couple and their two dogs were stuck for three days in the remote Gulf of Carpentaria, north-west of Staaten River National Park, after getting swept away in flood waters.

It is believed their 4WD was overcome by a large wave at a river crossing, when they managed to escape the vehicle through the passenger side window and make it to shore.

The man then swam back into croc-infested waters to free their two dogs.

The couple and their animals then had to battle no reception and no food for three days, drinking water from the river to get them through.

They scrawled "SOS" in the sand, with the distress message eventually being seen by a LifeFlight helicopter from the air.

They were airlifted to hospital and treated for dehydration and exposure, alongside their two dogs.

It was experienced New Zealand pilot Michael Adair's first week working at LifeFlight and he said the couple had lost hope they would be rescued.

"They said, 'Thank god you're here, we didn't think anyone was coming,'" he told the ABC.

"The wife had told us she had been hearing voices in the bush from exposure and had convinced herself that nobody was coming to help them, so she was very emotional when we hugged her."

He added that the couple were in good spirits when the helicopter arrived.

"These people had resigned themselves to dying and seeing the look on their faces when they saw us and realised they weren't going to die — that's the reason we do this," he said.

"They were very happy and jovial to see us and then the reality of the fact that hey … they're about to be rescued — that's when the emotion welled up."

Planning for old age? Here’s what the aged care changes mean for you

Anam Bilgrami, Macquarie University

Last week, Parliament passed sweeping reforms to Australia’s aged care system. These “once-in-a-generation” changes, set to begin next year on July 1, aim to improve how care is provided to older Australians at home, in their communities and in nursing homes.

The new Aged Care Act focuses on improving quality and safety, protecting the rights of older people and ensuring the financial sustainability of aged care providers.

A key change is the introduction of a new payment system, requiring wealthier people to contribute more for non-clinical services.

If you – or a loved one – are planning for aged care, here’s what the changes could mean for you.

What to expect from the home care overhaul

Over the past decade, there’s been a noticeable shift towards “ageing at home”. The number of Australians using home care has more than quadrupled, surpassing those in nursing homes.

To meet growing demand, the government is adding 107,000 home care places over the next two years, with a goal to reduce wait times to just three months.

Starting July 1 2025, Support at Home will replace the Home Care Packages program. The table below shows some of the key differences between these two programs.

Department of Health 2024

Home Care Packages are currently delivered under four annual government subsidy levels, covering care and provider management costs. Under Support at Home, the number of home care budget levels will double to eight, with the highest level increasing to A$78,000.

This aims to provide more tailored support and accommodate those needing higher levels of care.

Under the new system, recipients will receive quarterly budgets aligned to their funding level and work with their chosen provider to allocate funds across three broad service categories:

clinical care, such as nursing or physiotherapy

independence support, including personal care, transport and social support

everyday living assistance, such as cleaning, gardening and meal delivery.

Clinical care services will be fully government-funded, as these are crucial to supporting health and keeping people out of hospitals.

But recipients will contribute to the costs of independence and everyday living services under a new payment model, reflecting the government’s stance that these are services people have traditionally funded themselves over their lifetimes.

This will replace the basic daily fee and income-tested care fee that some people currently pay. Contributions will vary by income and assets (based on the age pension means test) and by service type.

Support at Home also includes additional funding for specific needs:

older Australians with less than three months to live will receive priority access to $25,000 in funding over 12 weeks

up to $15,000 will be available for assistive technologies and home modifications, eliminating the need to reserve home care budgets for these.

What if I or my loved one is already receiving a Home Care Package?

If you were receiving a package, on the waiting list, or assessed as eligible for one on September 12 2024, the government’s “no worse off” principle guarantees you won’t pay more under the new system.

Current recipients will have their Support at Home budget aligned with their existing package, and any unspent funds will roll over.

How nursing home fees will change

Australia’s nursing home sector is struggling financially, with 67% of providers operating at a loss. To ensure sustainability and support upgrades to facilities, the government is introducing major funding changes.

What stays the same?

The Basic Daily Fee, that everyone in nursing homes pays, set at 85% of the basic age pension (currently $63.57 a day or $23,200 annually), will not change.

What’s changing?

The government currently pays a Hotelling Supplement of $12.55 per day per resident to cover everyday living services like cleaning, catering and laundry ($4,581 annually).

From July 1 2025, this supplement will become means-tested. Residents with annual incomes above $95,400 or assets exceeding $238,000 (or some combination of these) will contribute partially or fully to this cost.

Currently, residents with sufficient means also pay a means-tested care fee between $0–$403.24 per day. This will be replaced by a “non-clinical care contribution”, capped at $101.16 daily and payable for the first four years of care. Only those with assets above $502,981 or incomes above $131,279 (or some combination of these) will pay this contribution.

Importantly, no one will pay more than $130,000 in combined contributions for Support at Home and non-clinical care in nursing homes over their lifetime.

Changes to accommodation payments

The way nursing home accommodation costs are paid is also changing from July 1 2025:

residents who pay their room price via a refundable lump sum will have 2% of their payment retained annually by the provider, up to a maximum of 10% over five years. For example, a $400,000 lump sum payment would result in $360,000 being refunded if a person stays five years or more, with the provider keeping $40,000

daily accommodation payments (a rent-style interest charge) will no longer remain fixed for the duration of a person’s nursing home stay. Instead, these payments will be indexed twice annually to the Consumer Price Index

providers will be able to set room prices up to $750,000 without government approval, an increase from the current $550,000 limit.

People with lower means (those who are fully subsidised by the government for their accommodation costs) will not be affected by these changes.

What if I own my home?

The treatment of the family home in means testing for nursing home costs will remain unchanged.

Its value is only assessed if no “protected person” (such as a spouse) lives in it, and even then, it’s capped at $206,039 (as at September 20 2024).

What happens to current nursing home residents?

The new rules for contributions and accommodation will apply only to those entering nursing homes from July 1 2025.

Existing residents will maintain their current arrangements and be no worse off.

Feeling overwhelmed?

These reforms aim to improve care delivery, fairness and sustainability, with the government emphasising that many older Australians – particularly those with lower incomes and assets – will not pay more.

The government has provided case studies to illustrate how home care and nursing home costs will differ under the new system for people at various income and asset levels.

Still, planning for aged care can be daunting. Many people don’t measure their blood pressure properly at home – here’s how to get accurate readings

Niamh Chapman, University of Sydney; Dean Picone, University of Sydney, and Eleanor Clapham, University of Tasmania

Measuring your blood pressure at home means you can take readings over several days to get a better picture of your health, instead of one-off measurements at the doctor’s clinic.

It’s important you follow specific steps to get an accurate reading.

But our study found most Australians do not measure their blood pressure correctly at home and very few were told the steps to follow.

We have created resources to help people measure their blood pressure at home, understand their readings and take action with their health-care team.

High blood pressure is a big issue

High blood pressure is a major health problem in Australia and globally.

One in three Australian adults have high blood pressure, also called hypertension. This is when your blood pressure is at or above 140/90mmHg (mmHg refers to millimetres of mercury, a standard measurement of blood pressure).

High blood pressure is the leading contributor to preventable health issues and early death among Australians because it is the main risk factor for heart disease, stroke, dementia and kidney disease.

Why measuring blood pressure is important

High blood pressure often has no symptoms. So the only way to know if you have it is to measure it.

You may also need to check if your blood pressure has lowered after starting medication or if you’re making changes to your lifestyle, such as doing more exercise, giving up smoking or reducing salt intake. Low blood pressure (hypotension) can also be an issue.

But blood pressure changes based on how we are feeling, what we’ve eaten or the activities we have just been doing.

These normal responses mean our blood pressure can change from minute to minute and hour to hour. This is why there are specific, recommended steps to follow to reliably measure your blood pressure and to be able to compare readings taken days, months and years apart.

Mistakes are common

We surveyed and interviewed 350 people (who were all measuring their blood pressure at home) from around Australia to find out how Australians measure blood pressure at home and if they receive any education to help them know what to do.

Our study found no one followed all of the specific, recommended steps to measure their blood pressure. Instead they said they measured their blood pressure at different times of the day after doing different things.

We found most people measured their blood pressure while sitting down (90%) and with the cuff on their bare arm (77%), which is the right thing to do.

While 58% of people took two blood pressure measures each time, which is correct, only 40% used the average of the two blood pressure readings. Very few (15%) measured their blood pressure over several days in both the morning and evening.

Only half of the people in our study used a blood pressure device that had been clinically validated. This means the device has been tested for accuracy by the manufacturer according to international standards, not just safety.

Consultation and communication

Regardless of whether or not a doctor had recommended they measure their blood pressure at home, most people (78%) reported their blood pressure readings to their doctor.

These findings tell us doctors often use home blood pressure readings to help diagnose and manage high blood pressure. This emphasises how important it is to ensure people measure blood pressure correctly.

Many people were measuring their blood pressure a few times a week or month. But most guidelines recommend blood pressure only needs to be measured at home: every day over a week, every six months; and ideally before you see your doctor and after you start or change blood pressure medication.

Measuring blood pressure at home can bring peace of mind, which many study participants described. But measuring your blood pressure too often may create unnecessary stress, potentially leading to higher blood pressure readings.

Instead, it’s better to agree with your doctor how often you should measure your blood pressure and to follow the recommended steps each time to make sure your readings are as accurate and useful as possible.

Support for blood pressure measurement

We found few people had received any education or guidance from health-care professionals about how to measure their blood pressure at home.

Instead, many study participants looked for information online to help them know what their blood pressure numbers meant and changes they could make to lower their blood pressure. They were less interested in learning how to measure accurately.

So we have worked with people who measure and manage their blood pressure at home to create a simple guide to help you choose a blood pressure device, measure your blood pressure accurately, understand your blood pressure readings and take action to control your blood pressure.

For more information about managing your blood pressure at home, see our resources. You can also check if your blood pressure device has been tested for accuracy.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Hundreds of pubs cancel Australia Day celebrations

Hundreds of pubs in Australia will not be celebrating Australia Day due to the "hurt" the day causes some patrons.

The nation’s second-biggest pubs group, Australian Venue Co, informed its managers of the decision to cancel the January 26th celebrations at more than 200 of its venues around the country.

An Australian Venue Co spokeswoman told News Corp that the venues in question will not acknowledge or celebrate the national holiday out of respect.

“Australia Day is a day that causes sadness for some members of our community, so we have decided not to specifically celebrate a day that causes hurt for some of our patrons and our team,” the spokeswoman said.

Australian Venue Co’s website says it owns and operates the country’s “best-loved pubs, bars and event spaces”, including “landmark” institutions and humble locals.

Potentially affected locations include popular pubs in Victoria: The Esplanade Hotel and Prince of Wales in St Kilda, and the Duke of Wellington and Garden State Hotel in Melbourne.

Others are the iconic Regatta Hotel and The Port Office Hotel in Brisbane, Sydney’s Cargo and Adelaide’s The Colonist and the Parkside Hotel.

For many Indigenous Australians, January 26th marks the “invasion” of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788.

For them it is a day of great sorrow that reminds of the impact of colonialism on their culture, land and people.

MasterChef UK host lashes out at wave of complaints

MasterChef UK host Gregg Wallace has lashed out at “middle-class women of a certain age” for making complaints about him in a bizarre online rant.

The TV host has stepped back from the program after an investigation was launched into his alleged misconduct over a number of years.

The controversy first came to light following a report by The Sun, which detailed accusations that Wallace, 60, made "inappropriate sexual comments" to a female BBC staffer during his time on Impossible Celebrities. He has also faced claims of being rude and insulting to women on another program in 2023.

After denying the allegations, Wallace launched into a heated tirade in an Instagram post, hitting back at the people he believes first complained about his conduct.

Wallace said on Instagram, “I have been doing MasterChef for 20 years – amateur, celebrity and professional MasterChef and I think in that time I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, all different backgrounds and all walks of life."

“And apparently now I am reading in the paper there’s been 13 complaints in that time.

“In the newspaper I can see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age just from Celebrity MasterChef. This isn’t right."

“In over 20 years of television, can you imagine how many women, female contestants, on MasterChef have made sexual remarks or sexual innuendo, can you imagine?”

“Do you know how many staff, all different sorts of staff, made a complaint about me in that time. Absolutely none. Zero. Seriously.”

Wallace's rant comes after Sir Rod Stewart called out the TV host in the wake of the allegations, accusing him of humiliating his wife, Penny Lancaster, during her appearance on Celebrity MasterChef in 2021.

Stewart wrote, “Good riddance Wallace... You humiliated my wife when she was on the show, but you had that bit cut out didn’t you? You’re a tubby, bald-headed, ill-mannered bully. Karma got ya.”

Wallace has denied the allegations and stated that a previous investigation by the BBC six years ago cleared him of any wrongdoing. He insisted his comments were not sexual in nature, saying, "I don’t want anybody to misunderstand this and make it look like I was flirting with somebody. Nobody accused me of that, and I never have."

Banijay UK, the production company behind MasterChef, confirmed the investigation into "historical allegations" and stated they are cooperating fully with the BBC. A BBC spokesperson said the corporation is commited to addressing any behaviour falling below its expected standards: “We take any issues that are raised with us seriously and have robust processes in place to deal with them... We will always support external production companies when addressing complaints or concerns.”

Robert Irwin celebrates milestone birthday with rare pic of Steve at 21

Robert Irwin has celebrated his 21st birthday with a heartfelt tribute to his late father and Aussie icon Steve.

Sharing a photo of his dad's 21st birthday in 1983, the wildlife warrior admitted how hard it was to celebrate the special day "when there's someone missing".

"Today I turn 21. "Two strikes and you're out": Crackdown on dodgy taxi drivers

The NSW government is introducing tougher penalties for taxi drivers caught ripping off passengers, as they crackdown on dodgy practices.

Taxi drivers caught committing two fare-related offences will be disqualified from driving a taxi, rideshare or any other type of transport from December 6.

The offences include not using their meter, overcharging, refusing a passenger travelling a short distance, demanding a fare not displayed on the meter, adding a surcharge and charging a maxi-taxi surcharge for less than five passengers.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen emphasised that the "two strikes and you're out" system would be used to crack down on a “minority of rogue drivers” in the industry, ahead of the holiday season.

"We're sending a strong message to the minority of rogue drivers that if they continue overcharging, not using the meter or refusing fares they now risk being kicked out of the industry," Haylen said.

"From 6 December, drivers convicted twice for fare-related offences will not only be disqualified from the taxi industry but also rideshare companies like Uber and DiDi.

"With these better regulations in place, passengers can have a safe and fair ride, while supporting the taxi industry.

“This is a really busy time for the taxi and rideshare industries. Christmas parties are starting to kick off, people will be starting to come home through the airport, and then there are people rushing around for those last-minute gifts,” she added.

"The majority of our state's 15,000 taxi drivers are doing the right thing, but these new measures will ensure that those who aren't, are out."

The laws will also apply to Taxi drivers with existing breaches on record, who will now be at risk of being banned from the industry by the Point to Point Transport Commissioner Anthony Wing.

More than 900 fines have been issued to taxi drivers by commissioner inspectors in the last two years.

"Let me reinforce, most drivers are consistently doing the right thing, but we want all passengers to know that there will be harsh consequences for drivers who continue to break the rules - they now face being kicked out of the industry," Wing said.

"We take all fare-related offences seriously which is why my Inspectors are frequently out conducting plain clothes operations along with highly visible compliance activities."

He added that "small time first offenders" would not necessarily be prosecuted but issued a fine instead of a strike.

Image: Shutterstock

Australia Post wants to charge more for stamps next year. Here’s why it has to keep letters alive

By Paul Alexander, Curtin University

Remember back at the turn of the millennium, when sending a small letter only cost 45 cents? If you haven’t used the postal service recently, you might be in for a rude shock.

Late last week, it was announced Australia Post had notified the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) of a proposal to increase the price of stamps.

If ultimately approved by Communications Minister Michelle Rowland, the current basic postage rate for a small letter, $1.50, would rise to $1.70 by mid-2025. Stamps for regular large and priority small letters would go from $2.20 up to $2.70.

There would still be a discounted option for seasonal greetings cards, which would remain at 65 cents.

If you’re feeling a sense of déjà vu, that’s because the last basic postage rate increase to $1.50 only just came into effect earlier this year.

Like physical cash, letters have arguably been in terminal decline. According to Australia Post, fewer than 3% of letters are now sent by individuals. The rest are overwhelmingly business and government communications.

But for some key groups, the “snail mail” remains a vital service. So why do we need to keep letters alive, and will increasing the price of stamps be enough to do so?

A duty to serve all Australians

As a publicly owned organisation, Australia Post has a range of formal community service obligations (CSOs). These are enshrined in legislation – the Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989.

These CSOs were set up to ensure essential postal services are accessible and affordable to all Australians, including those in regional, rural and remote areas.

They include providing a universal access to a standard letter service at a uniform price across the country, as well as specific obligations on the frequency, range and speed of mail delivery.

Since 2015, Australia Post has been lobbying to reform its community service obligations to better align with changed consumer behaviour and needs.

That has led to some changes in what’s expected, including a range of reforms implemented by the Australian government over the past year.

These have included reducing delivery frequency for letters and reallocating resources to parcel delivery, while still maintaining essential services in regional and remote areas and for special interest groups.

We are clearly in a broader transition to new CSOs – and a new role for Australia Post. Much of that comes down to the difficulty of delivering letters.

The long decline of letters

In the last financial year, Australia Post’s letter volumes fell by almost 13%, which the company said led to a loss of $361.8 million.

But this is nothing new. From a peak in 2008, letter delivery volumes have been plummeting for more than a decade.

Australia Post says they’re now at levels not seen since the 1950s. Remember, in 1955, the Australian population was only 9.2 million people.

Parallels with declining cash usage highlight our aversion to doing things with paper.

Cash use in Australia has also fallen to historic lows, forcing the government to step in with a plan to keep it alive for essentials.

All or nothing

A key conundrum is that we can’t keep letters half-alive. For all Australians to be able post letters on a scheduled basis with fast delivery requires Australia Post to maintain a complete letter network across the entire nation.

The overall costs of operating this – while not specifically itemised publicly – include maintaining delivery routes and retail outlets, paying employee wages and investing in infrastructure.

Naturally, increasing the cost of sending letters will discourage businesses from doing so, shrinking the market ever more.

But because the size of the mail delivery network does not shrink proportionately, this can cause outsize problems for Australia Post.

Australia is not unique. Postal services around the world have felt similar pressures, many of which have diversified into parcel logistics and offering other digital services.

Could we just lose letters?

There are three core demographics in Australian society that still need to send and receive physical mail. These are:

older Australians, particularly those who are less familiar with or have limited access to digital platforms

residents of regional and remote areas with limited internet connectivity

concessional users for whom discounted mail is the most affordable form of important communications.

At the very least, these groups all need to have a guaranteed ability to send and receive official information. That includes bank statements, legal notices, utility bills and government correspondence, such as electoral information.

Less critical, but still socially important and likely not to be terminated, is delivery of cards and letters for personal milestones, holidays or other events.

That puts Australia Post in a tricky position. It likely cannot maintain such large mail delivery infrastructure unless it does so at increasing losses.

That also reduces its ability to provide other, more relevant services and can blunt its competitiveness in the parcel delivery market.

Letters as small parcels

For Australia Post, one solution may lie in leveraging its thriving parcels delivery network.

Given the essential user base for mail delivery is now so small, it makes sense for letters to be “special” delivery services, much as courier document services are now. Parcel home delivery resources could take this mail the last mile.

This would be much more expensive per item for Australia Post. But if the market continued to decrease in volume, it would minimise total costs.

It would also allow the government to provide a targeted subsidy if required.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Ant stings can be painful. Here’s how to avoid getting stung this summer (and what to do if you do)

Sam Robinson, The University of Queensland

With the start of summer just days away, many of us will be looking forward to long sunny days spent at the beach, by the pool, out camping or picnicking in the park.

Insects also love summer. This is when most of them breed and feed. But this shared appreciation of the season can sometimes lead to conflict.

Insects have long been prey to many species, including birds, mammals, amphibians and other insects. As such, they’ve evolved a diverse range of defences – perhaps none more familiar to humans than the sting.

Many ants have a sting at their rear end which they use to deliver venom. It’s not the sting itself that causes pain, but rather the venom. Ant venom contains a cocktail of different chemicals, some of which have evolved specifically to manipulate nerve endings in our skin to cause pain.

Let’s look at some of the different ant stings you might experience this summer in Australia, and how to respond.

Bull ants

Bull ants (also known as bulldog ants, jumper ants, or jack jumpers) are large, for an ant. Some species can reach a length of 4 centimetres. They are easily recognisable with their large eyes, long mandibles (jaws) and aggressive nature.

Their sting is immediate, hot, sharp, and unmistakable, not dissimilar to that of a honeybee. The intense pain will last only a few minutes, before it’s replaced by some redness and swelling around the sting site.

Green-head ants

Green-head ants are also called green ants (but not to be confused with the green tree ants of northern Australia which do not sting). Green-head ants are common, and love our grass lawns.

At around 6 millimetres long, they are significantly smaller than bull ants. They can be recognised by their shiny green and purple exoskeleton.

Green-head ants tend to be less aggressive than bull ants, but they can still deliver a meaningful sting. The pain of a green-head ant’s sting can build more gradually, and create an intense, sticky ache.

Fire ants

Fire ants (or red imported fire ants) are originally from South America. They were first detected in Brisbane in 2001, thought to have hitched a ride in shipping containers, and have since spread across south-east Queensland.

Fire ants are reddish-brown and black and range in size from 2–6 millimetres long.

You’re most likely to encounter fire ants at their nests, which look like a pile of powdery soil. A fire ant nest doesn’t have an obvious entry, which is a good way to distinguish them from other similar ant nests.

Disturbing a fire ant nest will awaken an angry mass of hundreds of ants and put you at risk of being stung.

The initial pain from an individual sting is like an intense, hot itch, though manageable. But fire ant stings rarely occur in single digits. One ant can sting multiple times, and multiple ants can sting one person, which can lead to hundreds of stings. Fire ant stings can lead to pus-filled ulcers and scarring in the days afterwards.

If you live in an area where there are fire ants, it’s worth taking a few minutes to educate yourself on how to recognise and report them.

Electric ants

Electric ants are another nasty accidental import, originally from Central and South America. Currently restricted to Cairns and surrounds, these are tiny (1.5 millimetres long) yellow ants.

Like fire ants, these ants will typically defend en masse, so many will sting at once. Their sting is more painful than you’d expect from such a tiny creature. I liken it to being showered in red hot sparks.

If you think you see electric ants, you should report this to Biosecurity Queensland.

Aussie ants aren’t the worst

You might be surprised to hear Australian ants don’t even make the podium for the most painful ant stings. Among the prize winners are harvester ants (North and South America) which cause an extreme, sticky ache, likened to a drill slowly turning in your muscle – for as long as 12 hours.

The gold medal goes to the sting of the bullet ant of South and Central America, which has been described as:

Pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch nail embedded in your heel.

How to avoid getting stung (and what to do if you do)

Fortunately, the solution is usually very simple. Look before you sit on the ground or lay out your picnic blanket, avoiding areas where you see ant nests or lots of foraging ants.

Choice of footwear can also be important. In my experience, perhaps unsurprisingly, most stings occur on thong-wearing feet.

If you do get stung, in most cases it’s going to get better on its own. Pain will usually subside after a few minutes (sometimes a little longer for a green-head ant sting). The redness, swelling and itch that typically follow can last for a few days.

In the meantime, if needed, an ice pack will help with the pain. If it’s particularly bad, a local anaesthetic cream containing lidocaine may offer some temporary relief. You can get this over the counter at the pharmacy.

A small proportion of people may have an allergic reaction to ant stings. In very severe cases this might involve trouble breathing or swallowing. If you or someone you’re with experiences these symptoms after an ant sting, seek urgent medical attention.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Naomi Watts' heartbreaking family update

Naomi Watts has been struck with another personal tragedy.

The actress' paternal grandmother passed away this week at the age of 101, just three months following the loss of her maternal grandmother in August.

Watts took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news, with a photo of her grandmother holding an envelope from King Charles and the caption: "Our Granny Watts made it to 101 and a half."

"She got her letter from the King to celebrate her century, last night she rested easy," Watts continued.

Watts also shared a few more photos of her paternal grandmother, including one taken during her 101 birthday to her Instagram stories with the caption: "Farewell granny watts 101.5 years old!!"

The actress' maternal grandmother 'Nanna' Nikki Roberts, died less than three months ago, aged 99 following a "massive stroke".

"My darling Nanna has left this world but her spirit will never leave us. I'm truly blessed to have had the most wonderful relationship with her," Watts shared in an Instagram post on August 30 with a series of snaps with her Nanna.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Naomi Watts (@naomiwatts)

"She is such a huge part of who I am: her core values, her work ethic, and her mischievous humour and joy of life. The government wants to keep cash alive for buying essentials. Here’s why it’s such a challenge for businesses

Steve Worthington, Swinburne University of Technology

Cash usage has fallen off a cliff in Australia, but the federal government says it must have a future. So, it’s going to mandate one.

The Australian government will require businesses to accept cash for essentials such as groceries and fuel. Some (yet to be determined) small businesses will be exempt.

According to Treasury, losing cash as a means of payment would leave too many people behind:

Around 1.5 million Australians use cash to make more than 80% of their in‑person payments. Cash also provides an easily accessible back‑up to digital payments in times of natural disaster or digital outage.

In its announcement on Monday, Treasury pointed to what had already been achieved with similar schemes in other countries such as Spain and Norway, and a range of US states.

It’s an honourable cause. There are, however, some aspects of life in Australia that will present unique challenges for achieving it.

Why does using cash cost so much?

Some merchants in Australia already refuse to accept cash as a means of payment. That means relying entirely on digital payment methods such as bank cards and mobile wallets.

It mightn’t be immediately obvious why some businesses don’t like cash. But for many, it’s the most costly payment method to accept. While cash transactions don’t come with a surcharge fee like bank cards, they do carry a wide range of other hidden costs.

Businesses typically need to keep a “float” of cash in their tills overnight, so that next day’s early customers can be given change if needed. This float needs to be regularly updated and rebalanced with appropriate currency so the correct change can always be given.

Businesses also have to make sure no cash goes missing during their opening hours, count their cash take at the end of each day, make sure it is secure on their premises, and make periodic physical deposits into their bank account.

Both maintaining a float and making deposits can involve unpredictable trips to a bank branch or post office throughout the week.

Things are getting harder

For individuals and businesses, getting cash into and out of a bank account is becoming more of a challenge. And if you’re in regional or remote Australia, the nearest location where you can do so may be an hours-long drive away.

The most recent figures from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) show that across Australia since 2017, the number of ATMs has fallen by about 60% and the number of bank branches by 41%.

Many remaining bank branches have reduced their hours, and some have even stopped dealing in cash entirely, especially in rural and regional areas.

Moving cash around the country isn’t getting any easier or cheaper.

The dominant provider of cash-in-transit services, Armaguard, has been under sustained financial pressure in recent years.

Earlier this year, it secured a deal with Australia’s big four banks and some of its other major customers to receive a $50 million bailout.

Some countries facing similar situations – including the UK – have persuaded their banks to fund the idea of “banking hubs”.

Typically under this model, a location is identified in a regional community and banks collectively share the space, with each bank having one day a week in residence so that nobody is excluded from these services.

Could a regional branch levy help?

Also this month, Treasury proposed a new regional services levy, to support what should be the minimum level of banking services in regional areas.

Banks with a relatively large regional presence would be cross subsidised by a proportional levy on banks with relatively fewer services in these areas or none at all.

This funding would help banks sustain the number of branches, their opening hours and their ATMs. Under the proposal, banks that fell short of baseline requirements could purchase credits from others that did.

The reasoning behind these measures is that like Australia Post, banks should have a formal community service obligation. That is, a baseline of minimum services that must be provided.

Questions still to answer

In its media release, Treasury only gave a big picture view of what they wanted to achieve. There are still many questions that need to be resolved before any of its plans can become legislation.

Some concern where and how to target support. If regionally focused, how should regional be defined? Which areas and towns prioritised?

How should the banks and other financial services providers be required to help support cash use?

Exactly which businesses will be affected – and which exempt – must also be clearly defined, along with any enforcement measures.

And there is likely to be robust debate over what exactly constitutes the “essentials” for which merchants will be mandated to accept cash payment.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
