Shocking moment Glenn McGrath grabs three snakes with bare hands

Aussie Cricket legend Glenn McGrath has turned into a part time snake wrangler after having to remove three snakes from his rural Queensland property with his bare hands.

McGrath found the carpet pythons slithering inside his home on Wednesday, and decided to share the footage of him removing the unwelcome guests in different locations in his house.

One python was inside his pantry, another was in the living room and third was making its way across the hall.

"After plenty of encouragement and support from my wife, all three Coastal Carpet Pythons that were in the house were safely released back into the bush," he captioned the video.

In the video, his wife Sara screamed in absolute horror as he removed one of the snakes by grabbing its tail, carefully wrapping it around a mop, and taking it outside.

"You're going to get bitten," she screamed.

McGrath calmly reassured her that he had it all under control.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Glenn McGrath (@glennmcgrath11)

Fortunately, the carpet pythons are a non-venomous breed, so there was no real threat to McGrath.

However, many fans of the cricketer still applauded his bravery in the comments.

"Haha good technique mate. Instagram is making you a worse tourist – here’s how to travel respectfully

Lauren A. Siegel, University of Greenwich

Travel is back in full swing this summer, and so is bad behaviour by tourists.

Popular destinations have seen an uptick in incidents involving tourists in recent years. Reports of a man defacing the Colosseum in Rome shows that behaviour has deteriorated even in places that rarely had problems in the past.

What’s behind these abhorrent acts? One answer, my research shows, is social media. Instagram and TikTok have made it easy to find “hidden gem” restaurants and discover new destinations to add to your bucket list. But this democratisation of travel has had other consequences.

Because people now see their social media connections from their home environment travelling in an exotic location, they assume (consciously or not) that behaviour they ordinarily carry out at home is also acceptable in that holiday destination.

This is known as social proof, when we look to the behaviours of others to inform our own actions. People are likely to act more hedonistically while on holiday. Now, travellers also look to social media for proof of how others behave. If their peers from home are throwing caution to the wind while on holiday, this can cause a domino effect of bad behaviour.

I’ve identified other bad travel attitudes and habits that have emerged as a result of social media-driven tourism.

For example, the identifiable victim effect, which explains how people are more likely to sympathise with victims of tragedies when they know who those victims are. Because tourists are often sheltered in hotels and resorts away from local communities, they might (wrongly) think that travelling to a place far from home is an opportunity for consequence-free bad behaviour. They underestimate or ignore the effect their actions can have on locals or the economy.

The Instagram effect

When people travel to a beautiful place, the temptation to post photos and videos to social media is high. But, as I have argued, this creates a cycle that contributes to more self-indulgent travel.

First, tourists see their friends post photos from a place (revealed through geotags). They then want to visit the same places and take the same sorts of photos of themselves there. Eventually they post them on the same social networks where they saw the initial photos.

Being able to travel to and post about visiting the same places as one’s social group or online connections can be a form of social status. But it means that, in some cases, travellers will put more energy into creating content than they will to exploration, discovery or being respectful to local customs.

Hotspots respond

Bali is one destination with a reputation for social media-induced tourism. The photogenic island, replete with yoga retreats, is a huge draw for influencers.

In response to tourist misbehaviour, Bali introduced new guidelines for visitors in June 2023. These include rules about proper behaviour in the sacred temples, around the island and with locals, and respecting the natural environment.

Tourists now need a licence for motorbike rentals, and may not set foot on any mountain or volcano in Bali due to their sacred nature. Travellers must only stay in registered hotels and villas (which will impact a number of Airbnb properties). Bali has introduced a “tourist task force” to enforce the restrictions, through raids and investigations if necessary.

One new guideline is to not act aggressively or use harsh words towards locals, government officials or other tourists both while in Bali, or, notably, online. This speaks to the role of social media as part of the problem when it comes to bad tourist behaviour.

Other destinations have taken similar steps. Iceland, Hawaii, Palau, New Zealand, Costa Rica and others have adopted pledges for visitors to abide by local laws and customs. Campaigns like Switzerland’s No Drama, Austria’s See Vienna – not #Vienna, Finland’s Be more like a Finn and the Netherlands’ How to Amsterdam are aimed at attracting well-behaved tourists.

Where such efforts aren’t successful, some places such as Thailand’s famous Maya Bay have taken it further and fully closed to tourists, at least temporarily.

Travel respectfully

Remember you are a guest of the host communities when you travel. Here are some ways to ensure that you will be asked back.

1. Do your research

Even if you’re a seasoned traveller, you may not realise the impact your actions have on local communities. But a bit of information – from your own research or provided by local governments – might be enough to help you act more appropriately. Before you go, look up guidelines or background information on local cultural or safety norms.

Whether you agree with the customs or not is irrelevant. If it is a more conservative place than you are used to, you should be mindful of that – unlike the two influencers who were arrested for explicit behaviour in a temple in Bali.

2. Put down your phone

Research shows that when travelling, people can become alienated from their surroundings if they are more focused on their devices than the destination.

Often the most memorable travel experiences will be when you have a meaningful connection with someone, or learn something new that you’ve never experienced before. That becomes harder if you’re constantly looking at your phone.

3.
or use your influence for good

In popular “Instagram v reality” posts, influencers are revealing the huge crowds and queues behind the most Instagrammable locations.

Showing the less-than-glamorous conditions behind those iconic shots could influence your own social media connections to rethink their personal travel motivations – are they just going somewhere to get the perfect selfie? Having more evidence of these conditions circulating online could lead to a larger societal shift away from social media-induced tourism.

If you have the urge to post, try to promote smaller businesses and make sure you are demonstrating proper (and legal) etiquette on your holiday.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Picture perfect property hits the market

Casa Campana, the “most Instagrammable” house in Australia, has returned to the market in search of a new owner.

The Nunderi property, located between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay at 61 Garden Avenue, comes equipped with more than just four walls and a roof - it also boasts a following of almost 20k on social media.

And while no price has been listed for the stunning property, offers are likely to settle somewhere in the millions, as it last sold in mid-2022 for $3.3 million.

The property has demanded attention for its picture perfect appearance, for savvy social media models to hire as a set, for engaged couples to lock in as the venue for their big day, and for people seeking the ultimate holiday-home-away–from-home.

Despite the home’s popularity, it is a “verdant oasis of the utmost tranquillity and privacy”, according to its listing.

Inspired by the Mediterranean lifestyle, it features “stylish surroundings, sublime interiors, and stunning backdrop that will be excitingly familiar to some” across 1.31ha.

“Quietly unassuming from street level”, the white-on-white home is “set against a backdrop of lush rainforest” with a series of “curved edges, archways, whitewashed timber floors, and expanses of glass” to both draw the eye and “frame the outdoors in a living canvas to behold from every vantage point”.

The bright and breezy property has an open floor plan, with living and entertaining areas throughout, with “abundant natural light” to spark the feeling of being part of the “laid-back hinterland lifestyle without compromise”.

With four bedrooms, an entertainer’s kitchen and butler’s pantry, and a resort-style master suite with outdoor terrace, as well an entire second-level studio for work and wellness, Casa Campana is prepped for groups and families of all sizes.

The fun doesn’t stop indoors, either, with “custom design and jaw-dropping features” in place to amaze outside. From an outdoor pool to an entertaining pavilion with an outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, and abundant seating, visitors can rest assured that they won’t be missing out on any of their home - and holiday - luxuries.

And for anyone who might be looking to explore what lies beyond, the property is just 15 minutes from Cabarita Beach, 25 from the Gold Coast’s Coolangatta International Airport, and 40 from Byron Bay.

And as the listing states, all of these features come together to create “the opportunity to truly live your best life!”

Images: Instagram

Is 13 too young to have a TikTok or Instagram account?

The surgeon general is the “nation’s doctor” in the United States. They are tasked with giving Americans the “best scientific information” about their health.

Late last month, the current US surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, warned 13 is too young to join social media. He said it poses a risk to young people’s “self-worth and their relationships”, adding, "I, personally, based on the data I’ve seen, believe that 13 is too early [
] the skewed and often distorted environment of social media often does a disservice to many of those children."

Is 13 too young? What should parents think about when it comes to their kids and social media accounts?

Why are we talking about 13?

Major social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, require users to be at least 13. This includes those in Australia and New Zealand.
This minimum age requirement stems from 1998 US legislation which banned the collection of children’s personal data without parental consent.

For many parents, schools and cybersafety experts, this minimum age has become something of a benchmark. Many assume it comes with the implicit assurance social media platforms are appropriate and safe for children once they turn 13. Conversely, they also assume they are unsafe for children under 13.

But this is not necessarily the case.

When I speak with kids & parents about #YouthMentalHealth, the number one question I get is if social media is harming our kids. Based on the data I’ve seen and the conversations I’ve had, I believe 13 is too young for our kids to start using social media. https://t.co/vpBEcWySFc

— Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General (@Surgeon_General) February 3, 2023

What does the evidence say?

Social media platforms do present some risks for young people. These include online bullying and harassment, exposure to misinformation and inappropriate content, grooming, privacy breaches and excessive use.

Stories documenting the potentially harmful effects of social media are rarely out of the news. Studies claim links between social media and poor mental health and low self-esteem.

These findings are concerning, and there is no doubt social media may negatively affect some young people’s wellbeing. However, it is not a straightforward question.

While these studies might find a correlation or link between excessive social media use and poor self-esteem, for example, they rarely point to direct causation. Young people already experiencing low self-esteem and depression may use social media significantly more than others.

So why don’t we just increase the age?

Murthy acknowledges it is difficult to keep kids off their devices and social media. But he suggests parents band together, "and say you know, as a group, we’re not going to allow our kids to use social media until 16 or 17 or 18."

But any increase in the age - whether formal or informal – will not necessarily keep children safer online. Children can easily falsify their ages (many already do). And young people are good at finding creative and secretive ways of doing what they want regardless.

Why can’t parents just say no?

It is often suggested – by cyber safety experts – that parents just say no. This message has been reinforced by celebrity commentators such as British actress Kate Winslet, who recently told the BBC, "My children don’t have social media and haven’t had social media."

While these approaches may work with younger kids, older children are unlikely to simply comply. Blanket bans and restrictions not only lead to family conflict, but are also more likely to lead to children using social media without parental consent or knowledge.

This is a problem because parents play an important role in helping children navigate online spaces, including the sometimes fraught nature of peer relationships on social media.

If a child has a social media account without parental permission, they are much less likely to seek out their parents for help if they have a problem online, for fear of getting into trouble or having their device taken away.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by BBC Woman's Hour (@bbcwomanshour)

Children also have a right to be online

Discussion about risks also tends to ignore the potential benefits of being online.

Social media is incredibly important for many young people. It keeps them connected with friends and extended family, provides a platform for creativity and self-expression, and enables civic participation and activism.

Social media also provides access to like-minded individuals and communities who may provide solidarity and support, especially for marginalised teens.

Children, particularly teenagers, also have a right to participate in online spaces, including use of social media.

The United Nations’ Committee on the Rights of the Child notes children have the right to “meaningful access to digital technologies” as a way of realising the full range of their civil, political, cultural, economic and social rights.

So, when should my child get a TikTok account?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. Children vary tremendously in terms of their maturity, skills, life experience and judgement.

On top of this, online risk is not equally distributed, as children who are more vulnerable offline are more vulnerable online. For example, children with mental health problems, learning difficulties, a disability or who have problems at home are more likely to experience high-risk situations online.

In deciding whether your child is ready for a social media account, parents might consider:

Is my child especially vulnerable to online harms?

Does my child have the required maturity and resilience to manage potentially negative online social interactions?

Does my child listen to advice and follow rules?

Is my child aware of the risks, and do they have strategies for managing them?

Will my child come to me with any problems they encounter online?

Parents might also consider their children’s offline lives, as these often carry over into online spaces. This includes what their friendships are like, their propensity for taking risks, and their ability to consider the consequences of their actions.

Start talking early

The best thing that parents can do is initiate conversations about social media and the internet early and often.

Many issues that play out on social media are extensions of young people’s existing peer relationships. Parents can talk to their children about their friends and peers, show an interest in their child’s online activities, and openly discuss their child’s rights and responsibilities online.

Some parents may wish to set reasonable expectations and rules about appropriate use of social media. Documenting these expectations through a “family technology agreement” that is negotiated democratically as a family, rather than through top-down rules, is more likely to succeed.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Sex and the City star’s family heartbreak

Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall has taken to social media to announce that she has lost her mother.

She revealed to fans with a touching series of throwback images on Instagram that Shane Cattrall has died at an amazing 93 years of age.

Cattrall, 66, shared the heartfelt post along with the caption: "Shane Cattrall 1929 - 2022. Rest in peace Mum."

The photos included selfies of Shane and Kim together, and a sweet photo of the pair together on Kim's graduation day.

There were also some older black-and-white photos of Shane, and a sweet one of a school-aged Kim with her mum.

Plenty of friends and fans have shared their condolences, including British talk show host Alan Carr.

Kim, who appears on the TV show Queer As Folk, also saw her show co-stars send their love.

So far Kim's Sex and the City castmates Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker are yet to comment.

It's unlikely Parker will comment given she and Kim's falling out over the years, and how Cattrall reacted the last time Parker tried to reach out to her after a family tragedy.

In 2018, after Kim's brother Chris was found dead after going missing, Parker reached out privately to her, but Kim wasn't so thrilled about the support.

The actress took to social media to share a damning response to Parker: "I don't need your love or support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker," she wrote.

It was followed by an even more fiery caption, which even referenced her late mum:

"My Mom asked me today 'When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?'," Kim wrote in the caption. "Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now.

"Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven't already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I'm writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your 'nice girl' persona."

Parker never responded to the post, later telling Harper's Bazaar, "So there was no fight; it was completely fabricated because I actually never responded. And I won't, because she needed to say what she needed to say, and that is her privilege."

Image: Instagram

Hugh Jackman reveals why he is now in therapy

Hugh Jackman has revealed he is undergoing therapy to help him come to terms with the trauma he experienced as a child.

The Aussie actor opened up about his healing process in a new interview with Who magazine, telling the publication he recently began treatment.

"I just started it recently. It's helped me a lot," he said. "We all need a village."

"You need a friend you can unload everything – having someone really smart, who's a little a bit removed from your world can be really helpful."

In his sessions, Jackman discussed his longstanding pain from being abandoned by his mother, Grace, and sisters Zoe and Sonya, who left Australia for the UK when he was just eight.

Jackman remained in Sydney with his father, Christopher, and brothers Ian and Ralph. It wasn't until he was about 12 years old that he realised she was not coming home.

However, therapy has allowed Jackman to accept the past and make peace with loved ones.

"Understanding my past and how it's informing my thinking unconsciously – getting to really understand some of the patterns that I was unconsciously just repeating," he said.

However, Jackman has been fortunate enough to reconnect with his mother over the years, previously telling The Sun: "As I grew older I gained an understanding of why Mum did leave
and we have definitely made our peace, which is important. I was always quite connected with my mum. I have a good relationship with her."

Sadly, Jackman's father passed away in September last year, on Father's Day in Australia.

Images: Instagram

The Project slammed for hiring Sarah Harris

Fans of The Project have slammed Channel 10 for replacing Carrie Bickmore with Sarah Harris as the new host for the nightly news program.

While Sarah has been congratulated by many popular Australian media personalities on this huge milestone in her career, the decision has really bothered some viewers.

Freelance writer Mary Madigan praised Sarah as a presenter but said the choice was “uninspired” and not “ground breaking”.

Mary said: "She’s doing the school drop-off, I’m rolling out of bed with a pounding hangover and trying not to drop my Opal card as I race for the bus. She has a mortgage, I have Afterpay repayments to make."

Madigan also slammed Channel 10 for pairing her up with Waleed Aly, because he is "also a parent".

"If you want to see middle-aged white people delivering the news every channel is offering that in spades. In my humble opinion, the panel needs someone with the same kind of vibe as Tony Armstrong. Young, hungry and with a slightly different point of view," she added.

Taking to Twitter, many seconded the comments, with one writing: "You needed some youth to reinvigorate this program. Georgie Tunny and Tony Armstrong come to mind. Tony too valuable to just be doing sports on the ABC news."

You needed some youth to reinvigorate this program. Sam Armytage shares desperate plea after devastating news

Sam Armytage, the former host of Sunrise, has issued an urgent plea after the heart-breaking news that a close family friend will need a stem-cell donor immediately.

Maggie Banyard, who is only 14, from the Illawarra region of NSW, was diagnosed with leukaemia after suffering from a sore throat and a headache.

At first, doctors thought it was only tonsillitis but further testing went on to discover the youngster has cancer.

“We told Maggie she had leukaemia, but she didn’t really understand,” her mum Chantal told the Sunday Telegraph.

“Then we said; ‘Maggie you have blood cancer’. I’m terrified.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Chloe Lattanzi (@chloelattanziofficial)

She then began to sing, but chose to mute the song for now, with plans to release it when it's finished.

Chloe is the only child of the late Olivia Newton-John and her ex-husband Matt Lattanzi. “A mockery of my tipuna”: Traditional tattoo camera filter sparks outcry

The emergence of social media filters that allow users to project traditional Māori tattoos onto their faces has caused controversy, with concerns raised about the protection of Māori identity and intellectual property.

The filters, given names like “Māori Mask” and “Māori Face Tattoo” and projecting mataora, moko kauae, tatua and other traditional tattoos, have appeared on social media platforms such as Snapchat, using open-source Lookery software to enable real-time modification of people’s faces in photos.

Anyone can create filters, which are shared openly across the platform, with Instagram offering a similar feature.

Filters available on Snapchat that allow users to project traditional Māori tattoos onto their faces have sparked controversy. While two filters (left, centre) have been removed, one (right) is still available Images: RNZ, Author

While some see these filters as helping make Māori culture more accessible and revitalise mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori knowledge), others say it is damaging - particularly if they’re created from a non-Māori perspective.

"When people wear a fake Prada or Gucci bag, people are quick to call it out. However, when tauiwi (non-Māori people) create Māori art for profit, everyone thinks it's great,” Māori activist Karu Martin said.

"There are people who need to take responsibility when they are using Māori culture in an international space or platform to understand that they have consequences and ramifications."

In Māori cultures, moko and tatua are unique expressions of a person’s whakapapa (genealogy) and identity, with traditional Māori tattoo artist Julie Paama Pengally adding that the tattoos represent more than what the creators of these filters could fathom.

“Those elements are strongly connected to our whakapapa, our atua (ancestors), and our being,” Paama Pengally told the RNZ.

"As soon as you take something from a culture without permission and you misrepresent it, and you displace that culture from doing what they want to do with those things themselves, then you're appropriating.

"That's a mockery of my tīpuna that you're wearing on your face, just so you can have your two seconds of fun.

"For me, it's a long-lasting reminder that if I were to have that on my face, people would look at me sideways."

But social media platforms are the only culprits when it comes to the commercialisation and appropriation of moko, with the sequel to Avatar and video games Borderlands 2077 and Grand Theft Auto drawing criticism for depictions of moko.

TĆ«ranga Morgan-Edmonds, a Māori musician for the metal band Alien Weaponry who got his mataora last year, said he is weary of the commercialisation of moko.

"It's being made by some stranger on the other side of the world to be provided to the masses that don't belong to our culture,” he said.

"These ones in the games are blatant rip-offs - they follow the same patterns and all of that.

"Places that take inspiration have taken the concepts, and then designed something completely different."

Since RNZ approached Snapchat for a comment, the platform has removed the filters.

Meta, the company that owns Instagram and Facebook, didn’t respond to questions.

Image: RNZ

How to use Instagram as a travel tool

At the end of 2014 more than 300 million people were on Instagram, handing out around 1.2 billion likes each day. It’s the fastest growing social media platform around the world as everyone busily uploads photos of their lunch, their outfit and their pets. And the #travel hashtag is one of the most popular out there. So how can you use Instagram as a travel tool?

Planning

First and foremost, Insty will provide some unbeatable inspiration for your next journey. Looking for a new beach break destination? Search hashtags like #beach, #ocean, #sand, #waves or #sea to bring up the most snappable stretches of water on the planet. If you’re looking for something more specific, try a niche tag like #londoncoffee, #melbournestreetart or #berlinbynight to see what the cool kids are photographing. Your favourite travel blogger will also most likely have an Instagram account, so you can scroll through images of all their top destinations with ease.

Discovering

Instagram has a handy location feature that can put you on to other sights, activities, restaurants or bars around you. When you add a photo you have the option to name a location, let’s say Place de la Concorde, Paris. Once your photo is up you can click on the location to see other photos taken recently at the same location. Et voila!

Connecting

They don’t call it a “social” network for nothing. Instagram is a great platform for connecting with local bloggers or Instagram users, hotels, tourist boards or local celebrities. Follow their accounts before you go to get an idea of what you can expect at your destination. Then you can start interacting with their pictures, liking, commenting and asking questions, to get some insider feedback. Don’t forget to use local hashtags (like #ilovesydney for Sydney or #shangrilasydney if you’re staying at the Shangri-La Hotel) to get noticed – you might even get a repost!

Bragging

No one likes to admit to this one, but isn’t that really what social media is all about? It’s the modern equivalent of dragging all the neighbours over to your house for a slideshow after your trip to Europe. Get a great shot, add a filter (or two) and add as many hashtags as you can think of. Instagram is a great way to show your family and friends what you’re up to, and it provides a nice visual record for you to go over when you get home.

Image: Getty

Johnny Ruffo's devastating news

Johnny Ruffo, former Home and Away superstar, has given a heartbreaking update on his cancer battle, confirming that his illness is terminal.

Shooting quickly to fame on The X Factor in 2011, before landing a role on Home and Away, Johnny Ruffo has been an Aussie icon for quite some time now. The news of his brain cancer diagnosis in 2017 was devastating.

In 2019, Johnny revealed he was all-clear of the disease but sadly in November the following year, he shared the development that his cancer had returned. Since then, he’s kept his loyal following updated on every step of the journey.

“At some point it will get me, but I’m still fighting, still kicking on,” Johnny has said in the past.
“Looking up my diagnosis and my tumour, the average life expectancy was three years. And for me now it’s been five. I’m already winning. My goal now is to try and help as many as I can and also live a happy life.”

Ruffo, whose new memoir, No Finish Line has just been released, shared that he is worried about how long-term girlfriend Tahnee Simms will cope without him.

“You can only imagine how difficult it's been for her. What plays in my head a lot is, I hate to say this, how hard it may be for her if something does happen to me," the actor said.

"So, it's something that I don't want to think about. It just gets me a little bit emotional about it because I know at some point something will happen, whether it's, you know, a month from now or 10 years from now or 20 years.”

Earlier this year, Johnny praised Tahnee for sticking by his side during the toughest years of his life.

Image: Instagram
