"How to guarantee you’ll stay poor"

<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that being poor is just a mindset. At least, that’s the hot take from controversial Australian wealth and property guru Jack Henderson. </p> <p>Henderson recently graced his Facebook followers with a foolproof seven-step plan for staying poor. This list, boldly titled "how to guarantee you’ll stay poor", offers wisdom so profound it could only be matched by a fortune cookie written by a hedge fund manager.</p> <p>Let’s break it down, shall we?</p> <ol start="1" data-spread="true"> <li> <p><strong>Start tomorrow, never today.</strong> </p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Read every book and implement nothing.</strong> </p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Hang around other broke people.</strong> </p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Be a victim. Life is unfair.</strong> </p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Fail once and never start again.</strong> </p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Talk a big game. Do nothing you say you will.</strong> </p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Listen to other broke people’s opinions and advice.</strong> </p> </li> </ol> <p>While Henderson’s devotees lapped up this advice like an overpriced matcha latte, struggling Australians facing a cost-of-living crisis may find it slightly less helpful. After all, when the price of a head of lettuce rivals that of a luxury handbag, "mindset" isn’t always the issue.</p> <p>The Reserve Bank of Australia did throw a lifeline to homeowners by cutting interest rates on February 18, but experts say it’s about as useful as offering a band-aid to someone who’s been hit by a bus.</p> <p>As Aaron Scott, co-founder of Aussie Proptech service bRight Agent, put it: "A rate cut might sound like good news on the surface, but the reality is that it’s unlikely to make a meaningful difference for many homeowners who are already stretched to their financial limits."</p> <p>Translation: Don’t start dreaming of caviar just yet.</p> <p>Scott also pointed out that, despite the hype, one rate cut won’t do much beyond covering the cost of a daily coffee. And even then, only if you’re buying it from the budget section of the servo.</p> <p>"A single rate cut is like getting a 4-cent discount on a $2 per-litre fuel. It might make you feel good, but the saving’s gone by the time you leave the servo."</p> <p>For those currently navigating the financial minefield of rent, groceries and a mortgage that costs more than a small island in the Pacific, a single rate cut is about as helpful as Henderson’s "mindset coaching".</p> <p>Recent Roy Morgan research found that 30% of Aussie mortgage holders – 1.5 million families – are experiencing mortgage stress. And with grocery prices skyrocketing, that stress isn’t going anywhere fast.</p> <p>"On a $1.4 million loan, a 6.75 per cent loan rate dropping to 6.5 per cent will only save the mortgage holder around $107 per fortnight," Scott said.</p> <p>In other words, just enough to buy an extra carton of eggs – if they’re on special.</p> <p>As Scott so eloquently put it, "A single RBA cut is like throwing a cup of water on a bushfire – it won’t contain the raging mortgage stress pain."</p> <p>But hey, at least we’ve got mindset, right? Maybe if we all start tomorrow, read a few books and surround ourselves with equally broke friends, financial freedom will magically appear.</p> <p>Until then, we’ll just keep admiring Jack Henderson’s wisdom – because if there’s one thing he’s truly mastered, it’s the art of talking a big game.</p> <p>Now excuse me while I go manifest my way to affording rent this month.</p>

Jack the Ripper's identity revealed after 137 years

<p>A major breakthrough in the Jack the Ripper case could have identified the notorious serial killer after 137 years of mystery. </p> <p>Jack the Ripper terrorised the streets of London in 1888, with police believing he was responsible for the brutal rape and murders of at least five women – known as the Canonical Five – but could very well have committed at least six more.</p> <p>The victims, who were all brutally slain between August and November 1888, were Mary Nichols, 43, Annie Chapman, 47, Elizabeth Stride, 44, Catherine Eddowes, 46, and Mary Jane Kelly, 25.</p> <p>Police, historians and crime buffs have long questioned the real identity of the serial killer, and despite a long list of potential suspects, investigators have not been able to definitively pin down a single suspect to the crimes.</p> <p>However, new evidence has emerged in the case, leading to a possible answer. </p> <p>Self-proclaimed ‘Ripperologist’ and British author Russell Edwards purchased a shawl belonging to one of the victims, Catherine Eddowes, which contained blood and semen back in 2007.</p> <p>Years later, the shawl was put through rigorous forensic testing where it was found to contain DNA from two separate people.</p> <p>One of them matched a descendant of the female victim, while the other matched the descendants of a Polish immigrant, who would have been around 23 at the time of the murders.</p> <p>Upon discovering this male’s name, Edwards was able to reveal the true identity of the infamous‘Jack the Ripper’: Aaron Kosminski.</p> <p>“Considering his DNA is on the shawl that was at the murder scene and he was named, I have never considered anyone else to be the Ripper,” Edwards told <em><a href="https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/we-may-finally-know-the-true-identity-of-jack-the-ripper-after-137-years-of-mystery/news-story/14f22046597546a64113567752d972c9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news.com.au</a></em>.</p> <p>“I have, however, looked into every other suspect in order to eliminate them. The DNA work was a huge four-year process. We had to bypass the issue of contamination, plus many other hurdles."</p> <p>“It was a voyage of discovery, with many twists and turns. The adventure was thrilling from beginning to end and I was lucky to experience it.”</p> <p>Edwards said that when he discovered the DNA from the shawl matched, he was absolutely elated to have made such a breakthrough.</p> <p>“When we matched the DNA from the blood on the shawl with a direct female descendant of the victim, it was the singular most amazing moment of my life at the time,” he said.</p> <p>“We tested the semen left on the shawl. When we matched that, I was dumbfounded that we actually had discovered who Jack the Ripper truly was.”</p> <p>Born in Kłodawa in central Poland, Kosminski moved to England with his family as a child and eventually began working as a barber in London’s Whitechapel district.</p> <p>Medical records show that he had suffered from mental illness since at least 1885 and had spent time in various ‘lunatic asylums’ around London, with his condition reportedly taking the form of auditory hallucinations, a fear of being fed by other people, as well as a refusal to wash or bathe.</p> <p>He later died in 1919 at age 53.</p> <p>The descendants of Jack the Ripper’s victims are now calling for police to do an immediate investigation into Aaron Kosminski to make Edwards’ findings official.</p> <p>Karen Miller, the great-great-great-granddaughter of victim Catherine Eddowes, said that it would “mean a lot” to her and her family to put an end to this 137-year-old mystery.</p> <p>“The name Jack the Ripper has become sensationalised, it has gone down in history as this famous character,” the 53-year-old told the <em><a title="www.dailymail.co.uk" href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14234461/Descendants-Jack-Rippers-victims-DNA-breakthrough.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Mail</a></em>.</p> <p>“It has all been about him, this iconic name, but people have forgotten about the victims who did not have justice at the time."</p> <p>“What about the real name of the person who did this? Having the real person legally named in a court which can consider all the evidence would be a form of justice for the victims. We have got the proof, now we need this inquest to legally name the killer."</p> <p>“It would mean a lot to me, to my family, to a lot of people to finally have this crime solved.”</p> <p>Despite the excitement over the new evidence, some have cast doubt on the findings.</p> <p>The research has not yet been published in a scientific peer-reviewed journal, which means that the claims cannot be independently verified or the methodology scrutinised.</p> <p>Under UK law, it is up to the attorney general to approve a further inquest into the Jack the Ripper case, with Attorney-General Michael Ellis refusing the request two years ago, saying there was “not sufficient new evidence” to support an inquest.</p> <p><em>Image credits: Instagram </em></p>

Olympic champion breaks down over drug scandal

<p>Olympic swimming champion Shayna Jack has broken down over the drug scandal that almost ended her career in 2019. </p> <p>After entering the jungle as one of this year's <em>I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!</em> cast mates, Paris Olympics gold medallist Jack opened up about the 24-month ban she copped from her sport in 2019.</p> <p>She was banned for competing for two long years, for an anti-doping rule violation relating to her unintentional use of the anabolic agent Ligandrol. </p> <p>Jack then spent months embroiled in a case to prove her innocence in which she spent over $180,000, with the case putting her under intense emotional and financial strain. </p> <p>Jack broke down as she revealed to her campmates that her longtime partner, Kookaburras hockey player Joel Rintala, was scared to leave her at home alone for fear she might hurt herself. </p> <p>“Some nights I was in a bad place. He said those nights were the most fearful. He said he’d speed home because he just didn’t know if he was going to walk home into something that he wasn’t able to cope with. [If] I’d done something that I would eternally regret,” she said.</p> <p>Speaking directly to camera in the jungle's confessional, Jack went on to explain why she chose to share the story with her fellow cast members. </p> <p>“It’s using the people around me to continue to open up about it and face those difficulties and stop giving it so much power,” she said of the scandal. </p> <p>“I feel like the more I take it off my chest and take it off my heart, the more I can try to move forward with my life and not feel this huge aspect of my life pulling me back."</p> <p><em>Image credits: Ten</em></p>

Grieving father pays tribute to young son killed in school crash

<p>The heart-broken father of the young boy who was killed when a car crashed through his school gate has spoken out about his profound loss. </p> <p>Jack Davey was sitting with friends when a car slammed through a fence and into a group of Year 5 students at Auburn South Primary School on Tuesday afternoon.</p> <p>He was critically injured and died on the way to hospital, while four other children were also injured. </p> <p>As tributes for the young boy have started to emerge in the days following the accident, Jack’s father has also now publicly spoken for the first time following his son’s death.</p> <p>In a moving tribute, Mike Davey said he couldn’t imagine spending the rest of his life without his “beautiful” boy.</p> <p>“Our beautiful son. A shooting star who blessed us for 11 years with love, friendship and kindness,” he said. “You were my inspiration and motivation. I cannot comprehend the life ahead without you."</p> <p>“My mate, my champ, my Jackie-boi. Godspeed, until we meet again ... "Then I started hearing about it."</p> <p>"I ran down to the school... you could see parents for at least 300, 400 metres and I saw everyone hugging. "Go back to your ocean": Olympic medallist insulted by French customs officer

Man behind viral "democracy manifest" arrest dies

<p>Jack Karlson, the man behind one of Australia's most famous viral memes, has died aged 82. </p> <p>Karlson shot to fame after footage of his 1991 arrest outside the China Sea Restaurant in Brisbane went viral in 2009 when someone uploaded it to the internet. </p> <p>"Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest," he said during the arrest. </p> <p>"What is the charge? Eating a meal - a succulent Chinese meal?"</p> <p>"Have a look at the headlock here. See that chap over there?" he went on.</p> <p>"Get your hand off my penis! This is the bloke who got me on the penis before."</p> <p>Reports at the time suggested that Karlson had been arrested on suspicion of being criminal that was high on Queensland police's wanted list. </p> <p>While he did have a criminal history himself as he was known for several prison escapes throughout his life, he insisted that he was the wrong man. </p> <p>The reporter who reported Karlson's arrest 33 years ago, Chris Reason, confirmed Karlson's death in a social media post on X, tweeting that "Mr Democracy Manifest has died".</p> <p>A fundraiser had been set up for Karlson by his niece in June after he was reportedly diagnosed with prostate cancer and needed surgery for cataracts. </p> <p>“I know Jack’s video has given a lot of people joy and he has inspired many memes, t-shirts and other things over the years but Jack himself is doing it quite tough,” his niece wrote on the fundraiser at the time. </p> <p>“He has never had much money but has always been generous to family and friends. <p>US comedy-rock duo Tenacious D have found themselves at the centre of a media maelstrom during their current Australian tour. The reason? "No-brainer": Call for Jack's law to be introduced nationwide

<p>A Queensland father whose son was stabbed on a night out is pushing for Jack's Law to be introduced nationwide in the wake of the <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/family-of-bondi-killer-break-silence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bondi Junction attack</a> and <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/teenage-boy-in-custody-after-stabbing-at-sydney-church" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wakeley Church stabbing</a>. </p> <p>Brett Beasley is urging NSW premier Chris Minns and other states to introduce the anti-knife law which allows police officers to conduct random searches for knives at public transport hubs and Safe Night precincts using metal detecting wands.</p> <p>“It’s an absolute no-brainer,” he told <em>news.com.au</em>.</p> <p>“It’s absolutely extraordinary how well it’s working here in Queensland. I believe every single police officer Australia-wide should have the same powers.” </p> <p>Beasly and his wife Belinda have spent years campaigning for the law following the tragic death of their son Jack, who was stabbed by a group of teens outside a Surfers Paradise convenience store during a night out in 2019. </p> <p>It's been three years since the law was introduced in Queensland, and since then 55,000 people have been searched, 800 weapons have been confiscated and 1400 people have been charged. </p> <p>“It’s the same as being pulled over for a random breath test, it’s exactly the same and it’s working,” Beasly said. </p> <p>“I can guarantee the NSW government, if they were to adopt Jack’s Law, then they will start finding thousands of weapons. It’s scary to think how many of these young offenders are walking around actually armed and getting away with it.”</p> <p>Beasly, who was “absolutely devastated” after hearing about the Bondi Junction stabbing spree, said that the NSW premier should waste no time introducing the law. </p> <p>“Chris Minns shouldn’t even contemplate it. He should just say, ‘Absolutely. Let’s do this’.</p> <p>“I get thousands of messages from people in New South Wales who say ‘We want Jack’s Law down here, we need it down here’.”</p> <p>“To lose a child in any way is absolutely horrendous, and to lose a child to murder is the worst way possible. Your child’s life is taken from them.”</p> <p>Beasly is keen to meet with Minns to discuss rolling out Jacks law in NSW saying: “if Chris Minns is open to a meeting with me, I’ll be on the next flight to Sydney because this government need to make this happen. It’s as simple as that." </p> <p>A NSW government spokesperson has told<em> news.com.au</em> that they “need to look carefully at our current policies to ensure the public is safe”.</p> <p> “The NSW Sentencing Council is currently undertaking a review of the sentencing laws for firearms, knives and other weapons offences. Jackie O opens up on loneliness post-divorce

<p>Jackie 'O' Henderson has opened up on being gripped with feelings of loneliness in the years following her divorce. </p> <p>Speaking with fans at Luke McLeod's book launch for <em>Everyday Enlightenment</em> on Thursday night, the 49-year-old admitted she is "desperate" to find love and companionship. </p> <p>After being single for over five years, Jackie said it feels like "something's missing" in her life. </p> <p>"I just really want to find someone. I can't find him and I'm sort of a bit lost at the moment," she said. </p> <p>When Luke asked why she was so desperate to get into a relationship, Jackie said she couldn't quite put her finger on it, but it felt like "a piece" of her was "missing".</p> <p>"I have a lot of love to give or I want that affection, that company. It just feels like there's something missing in my life," she added.</p> <p>Jackie went on to tell her fans that Luke had previously given a piece of advice that "changed my life". </p> <p>He said she was giving off too much "desperate energy", and if she really wanted to attract love in her life, then she needed to be grateful for what she already has.  </p> <p>"I said to him, 'How am I meant to change what I want and need? I feel like I need that in my life and I really want that. I can't just switch that off,'" she admitted.</p> <p>Jackie has been adopting Luke's technique, and makes time every day to express gratitude for what she already has, and not for what she's missing. </p> <p>'Now I'm at a place where I've almost gone the other way. "I'm not myself": The real reason why Kyle Sandilands stormed off the show

<p>Jackie O Henderson has revealed the real reason why her co-host, Kyle Sandilands, <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/music/kyle-sandilands-storms-out-of-studio-after-argument-with-jackie-o" target="_blank" rel="noopener">walked out</a> just 11 minutes into their hit breakfast show on Tuesday morning. </p> <p>The shock jock was nowhere to be seen on Wednesday, so Jackie O had to explain his absence. </p> <p>One of their producers revealed that Sandilands had been "struggling with his shoulder." </p> <p>"He sent me a message saying, 'Honey, I'm so sorry. I'm on medication and I'm not myself. I'm in so much pain," Henderson said. </p> <p>"I actually feel so bad for him," admitted the radio star.</p> <p>Sandilands had recently injured his rotator cuff and was prescribed Oxycodone to manage the pain. </p> <p>A few of the side effects of using the painkiller can include light-headedness, confusion and unusual tiredness or weakness.  </p> <p>Henderson also admitted that she may have pushed him off the edge during their discussion about Covid-19 yesterday, as she had reportedly cussed him out. </p> <p>"Calling him a c**ksucker was the turning point," she said. </p> <p>Their argument had escalated into name-calling before Sandilands stormed out. </p> <p>Sandilands had previously used the derogatory term to attack newsreader Brooklyn Ross, and he couldn't when his co-host used the same insult back at him. </p> <p>This incident comes almost a week into the radio duo signing a record-breaking $200 million 10-year deal on air. </p> <p><em>Image: Kyle and Jackie O Show/ Instagram</em></p>

<p>Kyle Sandilands has stormed off his hit KIIS FM radio program after an argument with his co-host Jackie O Henderson over Covid-19. </p> <p>Sandilands stormed off just 11 minutes into the show on Tuesday morning, after bringing up that NSW Premier Chris Minns had cancelled his appearance on their show after testing positive to the virus.</p> <p>The argument sparked when Henderson downplayed the seriousness of the virus and said it was "just like the flu". </p> <p>Sandilands hit back saying that Henderson would probably still isolate if she caught the virus, considering how cautious she was in the past. </p> <p>"I'm allowed to change my opinion," Henderson shot back. </p> <p>Sandilands then argued that she should have some "consistency" in her opinions, before declaring that he was going home and storming out of the studio. </p> <p>"Well that escalated quickly," a stunned Henderson said. </p> <p>Not long after their Executive producer Pedro Vitola confirmed that the radio host had gone home. </p> <p>"What's happening today?" Dire Straits guitarist dies at age 68

You are forever with us.”</p> <p>His cause of death is still unknown, however the news of his passing comes just days after the announced that Sonni wouldn't be performing in upcoming concerts “because of health problems.”</p> <p>“Dear fans, unfortunately, Jack Sonni will not be able to participate in our next gigs because of health problems,” the post read.</p> <p>“Jack get better soon, we are waiting for you! With love, the DSL family.”</p> <p>Tributes poured in for the musician from around the world as news of his death spread on Thursday.</p> <p>One person wrote, "So sad to hear, loved his antics on stage, such a big smile," while others who knew him personally recalled their favourite moments and said they were "proud" to know him.</p> <p>Sonni joined the band in 1984 and joked about his role as a guitarist behind Mark Knopfler during the London band’s Brothers in Arms era, famously calling himself “the other guitar player,” a nickname that stuck because the Knopflers also played the instrument.</p> <p>Sonni played with the band during its two-song performance for the massive famine-relief concert Live Aid in July 1985, with Dire Straits slotting in between U2 and Queen at London’s Wembley Stadium.</p> <p>At the time of his death, Sonni was believed to be a writing for a new project. </p> <p>In his final Facebook post on June 2nd, he wrote, “Well chilluns, the last social media post for the foreseeable future as I dive into getting my novel in shape for my agent’s publisher hunt. Tragic end for Indi the Jack Russell after he and owner mauled in vicious attack

<p>In a heartbreaking turn of events, a NSW woman by the name of Eleanor Booth faced a horrifying ordeal while trying to defend her Jack Russell terrier from a vicious dog attack along a well-known walking track in southern Sydney.</p> <p>Unfortunately, her courageous efforts were in vain, as her beloved pet, Indi, succumbed to the injuries inflicted during the brutal attack.</p> <p>The incident unfolded on Sunday near the Georges River in Lugarno and concluded with both Booth and her pet being rescued by emergency services after she waded into neck-deep mud to escape from two dogs that had escaped from their home.</p> <p>Booth, who confided in her friends that she feared she would meet her end alone while clutching her lifeless dog, underwent surgery on Monday to treat wounds to both her hands.</p> <p>She also suffered bites to her mouth, throat, and cheek, in addition to a broken arm. Tragically, little Indi passed away at the Sydney Animal Hospital on Monday afternoon, having reportedly experienced several heart attacks.</p> <p>The community rallied behind Booth, and a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-indi-and-elle-after-vicious-dog-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe</a> campaign had already raised nearly $25,000 at the time of writing to aid her recovery from this shocking incident – with the funds now being used "to pay the outstanding bills, and any amount raised over and above will be donated to Veterinary Specialists of Sydney (VSOS)".</p> <p>The harrowing ordeal began when Booth took Indi for a routine walk on Sunday morning and unexpectedly encountered two dogs, believed to be Irish Wolfhounds, who launched a ferocious assault on Indi.</p> <p>Booth recounted witnessing a man with the two dogs instructing them to cease the attack. However, when the dogs showed no signs of relenting, the man abandoned the scene.</p> <p>Fuelled by sheer determination, Booth fought desperately to free Indi from the clutches of the aggressors and sought refuge by plunging into the muddy waters of the river. Witnesses attest that the dogs relentlessly pursued Booth into the treacherous terrain.</p> <p>Amidst the chaos, Fire and Rescue NSW personnel came to the aid of Booth and Indi, utilising pepper spray to deter the attacking dogs.</p> <p>In an effort to extricate Booth from the mud, rescuers instructed her to remove her trousers and shoes, facilitating her escape from the perilous predicament. Astonishingly, even two police officers who arrived on the scene found themselves trapped in the thick mud for a daunting 15 minutes.</p> <p>Eventually, thanks to the concerted efforts of firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW, the woman, her dog, and the two officers were successfully liberated from their muddy entrapment and promptly received medical attention.</p> <p>As investigations into the incident continue, NSW Police representative Paul Callaghan emphasised that the owner would likely bear liability, particularly in cases involving dogs attacking one another. “I’m going home”: Kyle Sandilands' dramatic walkout

<p>Radio giant Kyle Sandilands is renowned for his blunt approach, and paired with his passion to shock his loyal listeners, he never fails to leave mouths agape.</p> <p>And on June 8, a segment of the <em>Kyle &amp; Jackie O Show</em> saw the shock jock at his wit's end when he stormed out of the studio after an argument with producers.</p> <p>Sandilands, 51, decided he had had enough of his producers “killing his vibe” and left the building in a fit of rage.</p> <p>His abrupt departure shocked listeners, who were tuning in to enjoy the show’s typical witty banter.</p> <p>"What do you mean? Okay, stop the whole show. Turn that music off,” an audibly disgruntled Sandilands remarked.</p> <p>His co-host Jackie “O” Henderson was quick to come to his defence.</p> <p>“This show is not fun. Energy is off with everybody,” she added.</p> <p>The tiff then escalated into a heated argument among the team members.</p> <p>Producer Pete Deppeler instructed newsreader Brooklyn Ross to amp up his energy levels, a comment quickly met with a remark from another producer, “P** off Pete”.</p> <p>Caught up in the theatrics of it all Jackie O chimed in again.</p> <p>“You're killing my vibe guys,” she said.</p> <p>Executive Producer Pedro Vitola then stepped into the conflict.</p> <p>"To my defence and the reason I got very angry was, I'm so bored here,” he admitted.</p> <p>However, Sandilands had the final say.</p> <p>“Well, you know what?
