Charlise Mutten's mum breaks silence

Kallista Mutten, the mother of murdered schoolgirl Charlise Mutten, has broken her silence in her first ever television interview.

Nine-year-old Charlise was brutally murdered by her mother's then fiancée Justin Stein at his family home in the Blue Mountains, Sydney in January 2022.

In August, Stein was sentenced to life in jail without parole, after he was found guilty of Charlise's murder, having shot the little girl twice before dumping her body in a barrel.

Since Charlise's murder, Kallista had been harassed in public and abused by people on public transport to the extent she could no longer go outside.

In an upcoming interview for 60 Minutes that will air this Sunday night, Kallista broke her silence.

"I'm not this monster, this unfit mother," she told reporter Dimity Clancey in a newly released preview.

"Charlise deserved more."

"I miss her so much, she believed in me," she continued through tears.

Many have blamed her for the horrific murder that happened while Charlise was in her care. At the time, Charlise was visiting her mum and Stein in Sydney for Christmas from the Gold, where she lived with her grandparents.

She spent the night of January 11 alone with Stein at his property in the Blue Mountains, while her mother stayed at a caravan about a 90-minute drive away.

"I hate myself for it, I really do," Kallista said.

The preview also showed footage of an agitated Stein pacing around the police interview room, while blaming Charlise's mum for the murder.

"It was all her. I can't sit here and cover for her," he said.

Kallista denied having any involvement in her daughter's death and broke down in tears during a hearing, where she read a victim's impact statement via audio video link.

"(Charlise) just longed for you to be her dad. I just hate myself for being so wrong about you," she said at the time.

"I am forced to live with fact I trusted someone and because of my trust I put my daughter in harm's way."

In the 60 Minutes preview, a police detective said that Stein "weaved a web of wicked lies and deception", with Kallista describing her former partner as "pure evil".

Images: Nine

"Unspeakably vicious": Judge hands down verdict to Justin Stein

After a lengthy trial into the murder of nine-year-old Charlise Mutten, 33-year-old Justin Stein has had his fate read in court.

At the NSW Supreme Court in Sydney on Monday, Stein was sentenced to life in jail without parole after he was found guilty of fatally shooting the schoolgirl in the face before dumping her body in a barrel.

Justice Helen Wilson delivered the sentence and unleashed on Stein, saying he was "completely without remorse" and "without humanity or morality".

Justice Wilson said the shooting that took place at Stein's lavish family home in the Blue Mountains in January 2022 was "unspeakably vicious and murderous", saying, "These were deliberate acts, and the second shot was an execution shot. He undertook these actions intending to kill her."

"He sought to blame Charlise's mother for his own indecent conduct. Charlise was not just a child; she was a very young child at nine years and five months of age."

"Charlise had come to refer to the offender as 'Daddy'. This crime represents an egregious breach of that trust."

Wilson explained that Charlise was murdered after she was drugged with Stein's schizophrenia medication, as she said, "She would have been in a state of pronounced drowsiness; she had even less capacity to defend herself and flee from danger."

Justice Wilson described Stein's supposedly tearful account of Charlise's death during the trial as "false" and said the tissue he used was dry.

"From where I sat I could see very clearly, he was completely dry-eyed and did not shed a single tear," Justice Wilson said in disgust. "It might have been called theatre if it wasn't so calculated."

"Some instances of murder are so grave that the maximum penalty is the only appropriate penalty."

In a recent hearing, Charlise's mother Kallista Mutten broke down in tears and told her former fiancé, "I hate myself for trusting you."

Ms Mutten read a victim's impact statement via audio video link as she told Stein. "[Charlise] just longed for you to be her dad. I just hate myself for being so wrong about you."

"I am forced to live with fact I trusted someone and because of my trust I put my daughter in harm’s way."

Image credits: Facebook / NSW Supreme Court

Haunting last pictures of Charlise Mutten revealed

The haunting last photos of nine-year-old Charlise Mutten have been released just hours after her step-father was found guilty of her murder.

On Wednesday, Justin Stein was found guilty for the murder of Charlise, who was killed in January 2022 while visiting her mother and step-father for Christmas.

The jury reached their conclusion of Stein's guilt in just shy of two weeks following the four week trial, finding that Stein had killed Charlise at a Mount Wilson property owned by his parents before he wrapped her body and dumped it in a barrel down near the Colo River.

Following the guilty verdict, a series of photos were released by the court, which document some of the final days of Charlise's life.

In the photos, Charlise can be seen holding a pair of dolls and smiling for the camera as her mother, Kallista, snapped the image of her daughter.

Kallista then sent the photo to her mother and Charlise's grandmother Deborah on Christmas morning 2021.

“Thanks for the present and Merry Christmas from us all,” Kallista said to Deborah via Facebook.“Thanks for the present and Merry Christmas from us all,” Kallista said to Deborah via Facebook.

Deborah and her husband Clinton were Charlise's main guardians, as Charlise had been living with them on the Gold Coast.

Charlise can also be seen in a picture on January 8th, just days before she was killed, swimming in a pool, and on January 10th, she was photographed by her mother poking a face next to a broken window.

The photo was sent to Stein by Kallista along with a message saying, “I’m sorry I’m such a screw up can we still get married”.

Just two days later on January 12th, Charlise was killed.

Stein will face a sentence hearing in August, where he faced life in prison for murder.

Image credits: NSW Police / Facebook

Jury decides fate of accused murderer Justin Stein

The jury has handed down their verdict to Justin Stein after a lengthy trial into the murder of schoolgirl Charlise Mutten.

Stein, Mutten's stepfather, was found guilty of murdering the nine-year-old and disposing of her body in barrel in the Blue Mountains.

Charlise's body was found near the Colo River, northwest of Sydney on January 18th 2022, with gunshot wounds to her face and lower back.

The jury deliberated for almost two weeks before delivering its verdict on Wednesday morning, following a four-week trial.

Throughout the trial, Stein admitted to disposing of Charlise's body after her death in January 2022, but maintained that the young girl's mother, Kallista Mutten, had been the one to murder the child.

Kallista denied having any involvement in her daughter's death and broke down in tears when faced with the accusation in court.

As she dismissed the jurors, Justice Helen Wilson thanked them for their service.

She said "quite a lot of people" had told her at the beginning of the proceedings that they did not feel they could listen to evidence about the death of a child.

"It's not an easy thing to hear evidence about something as distressing as the violent death of, particularly, a child," she said.

"That's upsetting, I think, for most people. It's also difficult to sit in judgement on a fellow member of the community."

"In being willing to do both those things, you've played a very important role in our criminal justice system."

Stein will now face a sentence hearing on August 23rd, where is he faced with life in prison for the murder charge.

Image credits: 9News / NSW Police

The world continues to get weirder,” another added.

However, many praised the star for using his platform and lending his voice to the Yes campaign.

“Thanks for sharing this. It is a big deal here and causing a lot of controversy and misinformation,” one fan commented.

“Thank you and Taika for the solidarity. The lead up to the referendum has been really rough on our communities and it’s actually really nice to get some encouragement from our Indigenous brothers from across the seas,” another added.

“I can’t even begin to thank you for sharing this. I will not read any more of the comments,” a third commented.

“Thank you for adding your voice to the thousands across Australia who will be voting yes. Every voice counts,” added a fourth.

The video itself is a three-minute skit-style clip where Briggs talks to two ignorant women - who had casual biases echoing the No campaign - about the upcoming Voice referendum.

He kindly calls them out for their lack of information, with their excuse being that they haven't “had heaps of time” because of "life".

“Have you got your phone? Let’s see what you do have time for,” Briggs asks in the clip and as he opens up their search history, and jokingly says: “‘Did Aaron leave Love Island 13 because he had gonorrhoea?’ Big questions."

He then googles the proposal and finds a basic explainer in seconds.

“The Voice referendum means we are voting to have a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice who may make representations to parliament on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"The Voice will give independent advice to parliament and will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people based on the wishes of communities. That advice then goes to parliament who continues to hold the ultimate power for legislative change," they said.

“OK, well, that is quite clear, I’d just vote yes to that?” the woman adds. “How did you find that? You went on Google, and it’s, the first result? OK, well you need to tell people about that Google thing.”

The clip ends with a message that says: "Vote Yes to that referendum thing."

Images: Instagram/ Getty: Mike Marsland/WireImage

Ted Lasso star ordered to pay massive child support sum

Jason Sudeikis has been ordered to pay ex Olivia Wilde an enormous sum of child support, as a bitter two-year custody battle draws to a close.

According to new court filings obtained by Page Six, the Ted Lasso star has allegedly agreed to pay his ex $27,500 ($A42,800) per month in child support for their two kids, Otis, 9, and Daisy, 6.

The hefty settlement has been based on Sudeikis' reported 2023 income of $10.5 million ($A16.3 million) and Wilde’s estimated income of $500,000 ($A778,000).

“The parties agree that child support for the minor children in the amount of $27,500 per month is sufficient to maintain the needs of the minor children considering Jason’s station in life … is consistent with each child’s best interest, and application of the guideline would be unjust or inappropriate in this case,” the court papers reportedly state.

The legal proceedings began two years ago, and took a dramatic turn in 2022 when Wilde, who was promoting her new movie Don't Worry Darling at the time, was served legal papers while on stage delivering a speech at CinemaCon.

At the time, a source told Page Six that Wilde was mortified over the brazen act.

“It seemed unthinkable to her, and it took a moment to set in, but as mortifying as it was, she did not want to give a reaction,” the insider explained.

Since then, things have improved for the couple, as they were both seen putting on a united front at Otis' soccer game in LA.

Wilde and Sudeikis started dating in November 2011 and got engaged in January 2013. They welcomed their two kids before separating in November 2020.

It’s just lame https://t.co/cuOtUO9xjr

— Sheryl Crow (@SherylCrow) July 19, 2023

The music video for the song prompted a new wave of backlash, as it was filmed outside the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, which is a site that African American man was lynched.

A writer for entertainment industry magazine Variety said it was “the most contemptible country song of the decade” which traded on the “implicit moral superiority of having a limited number of neighbours”.

“For Aldean, it’s about how tiny burgs are under the imminent threat of attack from lawless urban marauders who will have to be kept at bay by any means necessary – meaning, pretty explicitly, vigilantism,” wrote its music critic Chris William.

He went on to say the video was “dangerous” because it “conflates the act of protesting with violent crime”.

In the wake of the criticism, Aldean hit back on his social media accounts, saying people had gone "too far" with their interpretation of the song.

He wrote on Twitter, “There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it – and there isn’t a single clip that isn’t real news footage – and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music – this one goes too far.”

“My political views have never been something I’ve hidden from. And I know that a lot of us in this country don’t agree on how we get back to a sense of normalcy, where we go at least a day without a headline that keeps us up at night, but the desire for it to – that’s what the song is about.”

"He was on top of the world": Family of Aussie who died on Mount Everest break silence

The family of an Australian man who died while climbing Mount Everest have spoken out.

Jason Bernard Kennison, 40, conquered Everest’s summit before falling sick during his descent and dying on May 19, his family said in a statement.

“It is with absolute broken hearts that our dearly beloved brother, son, cousin, friend passed away Friday 19th climbing Mt Everest,” the post read.

Grief-stricken loved ones have paid tribute to Kennison, describing him as “full of life”.

“He would put his mind to something, set a goal and achieve it,” his family said.

“Whether that be playing footy as a kid, winning motocross races, working around the world in the mining industry and in high-risk environments.

“He wanted to raise awareness and money for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia, wanting to help others who had similar struggles to himself.

“We are so proud of his achievements and we take great solace in knowing he made it to the summit. The highest place on this earth.”

Jason’s mother Gillian Kennison said her son was “so determined and so full of life”.

“He was amazing ... an amazing son, an amazing brother and uncle,” she told reporters.

“And he was on top of the world ... literally on top of the world”.

The Kennison family revealed Jason had made it to the top of the mountain and was in good spirits.

“He had his photo taken on top of the summit,” they said.

“He was proud of himself, however, during the descent, he suddenly fell ill and that’s when he passed away.”

The family went on to say that their son went through all the proper training he could to prepare to reach the Everest summit.

“We would like to send our greatest love and thanks to Nepal where he had Sherpas go above and beyond to help try to bring him home,” they said.

“We are worlds apart but united through our love for Jason. His family are heartbroken and he will be forever missed.”

Kennison was climbing to raise money for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA).

Rather than flowers, his family has asked others to support Kennison’s fundraising page.

In a crippling blow, Kennison’s family has been told it’s too dangerous to retrieve his body.

Local media reports his remains are still in the mountain’s balcony area.

Expedition company Asian Trekking helped Kennison organise the trip, and managing director Dawa Steven Sherpa said two guides accompanied the Aussie when he became unresponsive.

“They ran out of oxygen and bringing supplement bottles from Camp IV couldn’t be possible due to excessive winds,” Sherpa told AFP.

“It was high wind and bad weather that prevented them (from) going back to bring him down. He died at the Balcony area.”

Kennison, a diesel mechanic who was living in Perth, was involved in a horrific car crash when he was 22 years old.

He said he spiralled into depression after being told he would no longer be able to work as a mechanic given multiple broken bones and a spinal cord injury.

After years of rehabilitation, Kennison learnt to walk again and was able to go back to work.

However, about four years ago, he returned to rehab due to nerve damage in his spine.

“A personal goal for me is that fulfilment. To put together all my experiences and just be the person I know I can with integrity and live with all my beliefs and values and just accept that I have had injuries, but I’m still OK.”

Let's do the Time Warp again! Jason Donovan to star in Rocky Horror

Jason Donovan is returning to Australia to don the iconic fishnets, corset and platform heels of Dr Frank N Furter in a 50th anniversary production of The Rocky Horror Show.

It's not the first time the Neighbours actor has played the character, previously transforming into the cult classic for the 25th anniversary of Rocky Horror back in 1998.

The role was originally brought to life on screen by Tim Curry in the Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975, after finding years of success on the West End as a broadway show.

Now reprising the role, Donovan told Sunrise he is excited to lose himself in the chaotic world once again.

“You’ve really got to come out of yourself, quite extroverted in a way, and there’s a bit of naughtiness and cheekiness in this character,” Donovan told Edwina Bartholomew.

“But what really drives me to this role is the music and the fantasy of the story - it appeals to that cheeky side in all of us, and, as an actor, that’s an interesting place to start, with a great character and some great songs.”

“Theatre has been incredibly good to me as well and that’s why something like Rocky is really a great moment, to be able to bring Rocky back to Australia and celebrate my craft and what I’ve learnt, at the age I am, to Australian audiences is something I’m very excited about, so look out Sydney here I come.”

In June this year, he was asked to perform at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert - an honour that holds even greater significance now.

“I was in Australia when I was rung by Andrew Lloyd Webber, he left a message and said ‘I don’t know where you are, but give me a call’ ... and I rang him back and he said ‘would you be up for performing at the Jubilee?’ and I said ‘sure’."

“I didn’t understand the gravity of what the concert meant - and that moment meant ... it’s certainly, in my career, one of the biggest things I’ve been involved with.”

The new Australian production of The Rocky Horror Show will open at Theatre Royal Sydney in February 2023, also starring Myf Warhurst as The Narrator.

Image credits: Getty Images / Film Publicity Archives

Garden fixes after heavy rain

Better Homes and Gardens’ resident landscaper, Jason Hodges, shares his advice for tending to the garden after heavy rain.

When it comes to the garden and heavy rain, you need to be prepared. Where does water sit? What gets washed away? How are your drains working or failing? All things you can repair and get working for the future success of your garden.

The heavy rain has saturated our soil, and strong winds have toppled over trees all week, but long-term, the saturated soil can hurt all plants in the garden. When the soil is water-logged the root system can drown from lack of oxygen. The first thing I would do is rake some mulch away allowing for some evaporation, either with a garden fork or even something like a cricket stump. Make some holes to allow air in and for the water to fill and again evaporate.

Snails and slugs are opportunists and thrive and reproduce when times are good – they love the rain and the wet conditions afterwards. To control them I like to use a take-away container with a splash of beer in it. Placed level with the garden bed the snails go in and never leave.

If your garden was flooded don’t be too quick to think the water’s gone down and everything’s fine. If they’re in the garden, avoid eating leafy vegetables such as lettuce, kale and spinach. They may have been contaminated by the flood water. Fruit trees such as citrus should be fine within a short period of time.

Now that it has stopped raining it’s never too late to clean the gutters. Overflowing gutters can damage gardens and undermine the footings of your house. When you’re up a ladder either doing the gutters or any other job in the garden I recommend you have a second person with you, an extra set of hands to hold the ladder, spot problems and just pass you tools. It makes the process a lot safer and quicker.

Look out for mould, moss and mildew that might grow on shady, damp paths over the next few weeks. A blast with a pressure washer will be a quick fix and a lot more enjoyable than slipping A over Z. A weak solution of vinegar and water will kill mould and mildew if you don’t have a pressure washer.

Look for branches that may have been damaged but are still hanging in the tree. They will become more obvious as the foliage browns off and dies. Cleaning up the tear and damage will give the tree a better chance of recovery.

If you have a watering system, override it and turn it off for a couple of weeks. The last thing the garden needs is a drink. If your pots were full of water remove the saucers and allow them to drain.

It’s a hard time to garden after heavy rain, but let’s be thankful for it and hope we can enjoy the long-term benefits of having moisture deep down in our soil.

Written by Jason Hodges. “Several of these floods happened on your watch”: Nat Barr slams Liberal Party deputy leader

Sunrise host Natalie Barr has called out Liberal MP Sussan Ley for claiming the Labor government was too slow in their handling of the NSW floods.

The Liberal Party deputy leader appeared alongside Labor's Minister for Education Jason Clare on Sunrise on Friday July 8 who were discussing raising the walls of Warragamba Dam to stop future flooding.

Ms Barr got the ball rolling, asking Ms Ley why nothing was done when her government was in power.

“Sussan what do you think? Because several of these floods happened on your watch and nothing seemed to go ahead did it?” she asked.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear from those people who are so affected when they feel yet another flood event,” Ms Ley began before she was cut off by Ms Barr.

“Hang on Sussan, the first flood, the big one, was in March last year, then we had March this year, April this year, with all due respect, what did your government do?” Ms Barr questioned.

“We worked closely and started a planning process at federal environment level that I was actually involved with. At the moment, the issue is with the NSW Government but a lot of work has been done by the Commonwealth,” Ms Ley said.

“Now, this incoming government seems to not know how to pick up that work and continue with it. And that’s my point, at least start with the right minister. It’s waiting there and it needs [NSW]..., but at least start in the right area of the government to get this ball running.”

“Nat, I think Sussan’s got a short memory here. Go back to the start of the year, we had a tinny army that rescued people,” Mr Clare said of Morrison’s Government response to the March floods.

“People had to hire their own helicopters because rescue services weren't on the way.

“We were proactive. We got helicopters ready and soldiers ready before we were even asked.”

Ms Ley however then questioned why the government took too long to announce relief payments for the affected areas.

“On Monday I raised the issue that payments that could have been made in hours were taking days,” she said.

“The floods were on the weekend. It wasn't until Thursday that a signature on a paper was made, coincidentally when the Prime Minister came back from overseas.”

Ms Barr snapped at Ms Ley saying: “Well, it may have been a couple of days but it's burnt into our memory that people had to go rescue themselves and their communities.”

The residents in the 23 LGAs affected by the severe storms and flooding since June 27, are eligible for disaster relief payments funded by the NSW government and the Commonwealth.

The LGAs include Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Camden, Canterbury Bankstown, Campbelltown, Central Coast, Cessnock, Fairfield, Georges River, Hawkesbury, Hornsby, Kiama, Lithgow, Liverpool, Northern Beaches, Penrith, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Sutherland, The Hills, Wingecarribee, Wollondilly and Wollongong.

Images: Sunrise
