Katy Perry's massive AFL payday revealed

Katy Perry is reportedly set to take home a huge sum for her AFL grand final performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The AFL secured the Wide Awake singer as their headline pre-game entertainment act in July.

Since then, there have been rumours of disagreements between Katy's team and organisers on the set list, but the pop star is still set to be paid $1 million for each song she performs.

According to The Herald Sun, Katy will be paid $5 million for the event, as she will perform five songs on the night. She is also set to share the stage briefly with an Aussie female pop star, that is yet to be named, but is someone she "looks up to".

During an appearance on Channel 10's The Project, Katy hinted that the mystery guest is a Scorpio, which could point to Delta Goodrem or Tina Arena.

“She’s a Scorpio, that’s another hint for your digging,” she said when probed by The Project host Sarah Harris.

Perry reportedly only recently settled the drama about which five songs she'll be performing according to footy journalist Tom Morris.

Morris told SEN Breakfast on Monday that the AFL requested that she performed her popular hits from her older albums, but Katy's team was reported to have pushed back, as they wanted to perform two new songs from her comeback album 143.

They eventually reached an agreement for Katy to perform just one new song.

Image: The Project

Stan Grant's wife Tracey Holmes quits the ABC

Veteran senior ABC journalist Tracey Holmes has announced her resignation from the public broadcaster, marking the end of an era for the network. This decision follows closely on the heels of her high-profile husband, Stan Grant, walking away from his role as host of the ABC's Q&A program, citing exhaustion due to persistent racial abuse.

Holmes took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram to make her resignation public, leaving many to wonder about her future in the world of journalism.

Holmes, a prominent figure in Australian journalism, has been a familiar face to ABC viewers for decades. With a career spanning over three decades, her contribution to the field of sports reporting has been nothing short of remarkable. However, as she shared her decision to part ways with the ABC, Holmes alluded to the exciting prospect of Paris 2024, which will mark her 14th Olympic Games as a journalist, reporter, and broadcaster. This time, though, it won't be under the ABC's banner since her resignation will take effect on November 30.

In her heartfelt message to colleagues and listeners, Holmes expressed her gratitude and promised to continue her career in the future. "For now though, to channel a former governor of California in his former life as The Terminator, 'I'll be back,' that's a promise," she declared. Her departure from the ABC may be a farewell, but it's certainly not a permanent one.

Holmes's career at the ABC began in 1989, and her groundbreaking role as Australia's first female host of the sports program, Grandstand, made her an icon in the world of sports journalism.

Her trailblazing work has not only inspired countless aspiring journalists but also garnered the recognition she truly deserves. Earlier this year, she received the Australian Sports Commission's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, an accolade that cements her status as one of the most influential sports broadcasters in the country.

Her decision to leave the ABC is undoubtedly a significant moment in Australian media. The circumstances surrounding her departure, coupled with her husband Stan Grant's recent exit, raise questions about the state of journalism and the challenges faced by those in the public eye. Grant cited exhaustion and racial abuse as reasons for his departure, highlighting the harsh realities that journalists and broadcasters often face.

While Holmes may be bidding farewell to her long-standing role at the ABC, her departure by no means signifies the end of her illustrious career. As she prepares for her 14th Olympic Games, she's poised to continue making a significant impact in the world of sports journalism. Her resilience and determination, in the face of challenges that forced her and her husband to step away from high-profile positions, serve as a testament to her unwavering commitment to the craft.

As we await her next move, the Australian media landscape is left with a void that will be hard to fill. Holmes leaves behind a legacy that future journalists can only aspire to match, and her impact on the industry will be felt for years to come.

While the ABC bids her farewell, we can be certain that the world has not seen the last of this pioneering journalist. Paris 2024 beckons, and with it, a new chapter in the remarkable career of Tracey Holmes.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tracey Holmes (@traceyleeholmes)

Image: Instagram

Aussie designer wins lawsuit against Katy Perry

One of Katy Perry’s companies has been found guilty of infringing the trademark of a Sydney fashion designer.

Katie Jane Taylor has designed and sold her own line of clothing under her label ‘Katie Perry’ since 2008.

While the pop superstar Perry, born Katheryn Hudson, initially fought the Australian registration of the Katie Perry brand, she later withdrew it.

Taylor sued the singer for infringement in the Federal Court in 2019, more than a decade after the Firework singer started selling her own brand of merchandise, including clothing, under her stage name.

“This is a tale of two women, two teenage dreams and one name,” Justice Brigitte Markovic wrote in a judgement published on April 29 2023.

Judge Markovic found Hudson had infringed the mark on Twitter ahead of one of her Australian tours in 2014.

Despite the infringement, the judge concluded that the singer did not owe any compensation to the designer as she had used the trademark in “good faith”.

One of the singer’s other businesses Kitty Purry however is liable for damages because of the sale of clothing during her 2014 tour.

A bid by the star and her companies to cancel the Katy Perry trademark was dismissed by the Federal Court.

Markovic is yet to determine the amount of damages owed by Kitty Purry.

Use this Sherlockian trick to improve your memory

If you have seen the BBC adaptation of Sherlock Holmes starring Benedict Cumberbatch, you are probably familiar with a technique called the “mind palace”.

In the show, Holmes appears to visit an imaginary place in his mind where he performs associations between words, places, and objects, until he finds the information he wants to remember.

Despite appearing in a fictional TV show, this technique actually exists and is one of the older known mnemonic techniques.

How does the “mind palace” technique work?

The “mind palace” memory technique is also known as the method of loci, which was used as a rhetorical technique by Roman speakers so they could remember and recite long speeches.

Generally, the first step is to imprint a series of places on the memory. Common place systems that people imagine are architectural, such as a house with a variety of rooms and different spaces, decorated with statues and other ornaments.

The next step involves inserting images related to the thing you want to remember. The more absurd the images, the easier it is to remember too.

For example, if you want to remember the phrase, “The world is suffering due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus”, you could imagine a globe sitting on a couch in the lounge room, sneezing and coughing while being tormented by the image of a giant coronavirus.

For the technique to work, a person would “walk” through their imagined house, observe the objects in each of the rooms, and establish a story so they can remember what they want.

As another example, imagine you want to remember a shopping list that includes bananas, milk, eggs, and cheese. To remember the items and the order they appear in, you could imagine walking around a particular room and seeing bananas sitting in armchairs and drinking milk. After that, you walk down the hallway and see a picture hanging on the wall of a family of eggs on holiday. Then, when you turn into the next room on the right, you find a cheese sleeping soundly in bed.

Though distributing objects throughout your imagined house is part of the technique, the key component is the narrative created from the relationship between what you want to remember and the spatial arrangement within the “mind palace”.

Where are the films starring successful women entrepreneurs?

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, now streaming in Australia on Binge, depicts Theranos founder and former CEO Elizabeth Holmes as a bewitching sociopath.

Holmes wanted to revolutionise health care by providing a simple and cheap way to perform blood tests using only a finger prick. In 2003, she founded Theranos, with a vision of the company’s machines in every home in America.

But, as the Wall Street Journal’s John Carreyrou revealed in 2015, Holmes created an intricate web of deception. Even as machines found their way into chemists and were being used by medical insurance companies, they never actually worked.

Holmes put patients’ lives at risk and cost investors millions of dollars.

The documentary is compelling viewing, but as it enters a very slim field of movies about female entrepreneurs it is worth questioning the impact of the stories we choose to tell.

Fall from grace

The journey Holmes took from young idol to spectacular failure is a story about systemic issues and the sometimes toxic culture of the world of start-ups.

Prior to the scandal breaking, Holmes was celebrated in the media. She was portrayed as a Stanford University dropout with a vision for changing the world. She raised hundreds of millions of dollars from powerful men in a start-up landscape known for its discriminating funding practices.

She made the cover of Forbes magazine in 2014 as the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. Holmes represented a heady mix of tech, science and business. She was the golden girl of the start-up world.

This made her fall from grace even more spectacular.

But compare Holmes’ portrayal with another well known example of a deceitful male entrepreneur: Jordan Belfort, the “wolf of Wall Street”.

Belfort ran an elaborate crime scheme linked to manipulating the stock market and was jailed for 22 months for securities fraud. Nonetheless, his autobiography and Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film adaptation depict Belfort’s story as celebration of wealth and power, rather than a critical review of his fraudulent behaviour.

Where are all the good stories?

Feature films about female entrepreneurs are few and far between.

Research from one of the authors examined English-language films from 1986 to 2016 with female entrepreneurs as the central character. Over the 30-year period, only 11 films about women entrepreneurs were identified – fewer than the number of films about Apple co-founder Steve Jobs alone.

From Baby Boom (1987), where Diane Keaton’s character starts a baby food business, to Melissa McCarthy’s brownie empire in The Boss (2016), these films overwhelmingly depicted female entrepreneurs as running small-scale kitchen table businesses in female-dominated industries.

These movies told stories of cleaning, as in Joy (2015) and Sunshine Cleaning (2008); fashion, as in The Intern (2015); and not-for-profit work, as in the First Wives Club (1996).

Businesses depicted typically had low numbers of paid employees. The entrepreneurs were resource-poor, and most often it was a supporting male character who helped the female entrepreneur succeed.

Additionally, the study found a woman starting her own business is seemingly not enough to hold audience attention: all films included a parallel romantic storyline.

The female entrepreneur as role model

Celebrating successful female role models encourages women to dream big and succeed in male dominated arenas.

Role models provide a source of inspiration and contribute to self-belief. As the quantity of entrepreneurship related media increases, so does the amount of entrepreneurial activity.

However, negative portrayals of careers may prevent people from considering a profession.

The case of Holmes and Theranos is damaging for the betrayed customers and investors, but also for the field of entrepreneurship, which only in recent decades has seen its reputation overhauled.

Entrepreneurship was once the domain of racketeers. Over time, it has evolved to be the domain of tech celebrities, socially conscious founders and a vehicle for upward social mobility – but still, too often, a domain of men.

One study investigated how female entrepreneurs are featured on the cover of Entrepreneur magazine. Women were vastly outnumbered by men on the cover, and were often portrayed in a stereotypical female fashion.

Words surrounding images of women tended to be about nurturing, health, beauty and fashion. Wording accompanying images of male entrepreneurs talked of power, innovation and risk taking.

Women were “glamified” in full make-up and focus given to their face, while men were more likely to be standing and set against a corporate colour palette.

How we tell stories of female entrepreneurs matters.

In order to achieve equity in entrepreneurship, we need to acknowledge the role of the media in filling the entrepreneurship pipeline.

Positive depictions of innovative women act as a mirror, showing girls and women what they can achieve. We need more, and better, stories about female entrepreneurs so stories about female innovation aren’t limited to failure and fraud.

Written by Bronwyn Eager and Louise Grimmer. To anything. Couldn't possibly compare to anything,” she laughed.

Katy Perry causes a stir in the MasterChef kitchen with raunchy comments

Many dream about having someone like Katy Perry prancing around their kitchen while they whip up a weeknight meal, and that’s exactly what happened on last night’s episode of MasterChef.

The soon-to-be-mum was invited to guest judge MasterChef: Back to Win and not only did she send the contestants into a spin but was also praised by those watching at home for being “weird”, “wonderful” and “chaotic”.

But in true Katy Perry fashion, it was her string of raunchy comments that had everyone in Australia in hysterics.

When tasting the first dish, which was Sarah Tiong’s pork, the 35-year-old songstress told judge Jock Zonfrillo she had a sprained thumb so she couldn’t cut her own food.

“Party in mouth. Put it in my mouth, Daddy!,” Perry said excitably.

The racy comment was met with laughter, with fellow judge Andy Allen saying, “Can you cut mine too please Daddy?”

Katy Perry calling Jock ‘daddy’ has made my entire week. #MasterChefAU
— Georgia Duncan (@_georgiarae) May 14, 2020

did... did katy perry just call jock... daddy? #MasterChefAU
— 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘦 🍉 (@goldenwildfIwr) May 14, 2020

Hopefully Katy Perry’s #MasterChefAU legacy is not the theme song but everyone calling Jock ‘Daddy’
— Jess Chandra (@jesschandra) May 14, 2020

And that wasn’t all.

After tasting Reece Hignell’s cake, she folded a napkin into a set of breasts.

“You’re the tits, Reece,” she said.

While everyone was ecstatic about Perry’s presence, Reece became completely starstruck as he struggled to focus on the cook.

“Oh sh*t,” he said, laughing and looking down at his workspace as the star introduced herself.

“I don’t know how to talk, I don’t know how to move, I’m just shutting down,” Hignell had told the camera, taking a deep breath.

Poh, Reynold, Sarah, Simon and Reece were fighting for immunity as the singer entered the kitchen.

The challenge – something “hot and cold” in honour of the show’s theme song performed by Perry.

“Reece, the only thing is I don’t love really fishy things, so anyone that’s doing anything very fishy,” Perry tells Hignell during their brief – and giggly chat.

“Well we’re doing cake,” he responded shyly.

“Oh I love a cake,” Perry bellowed bizarrely.

“Ever since I became with child, I’m definitely into it.

“I have a serious allergy to gluten though … JK,” the cheeky songstress added to an awe-struck Reece.

“You’re stirring very aggressively,” she teased before wandering off.

“Katy Perry is just like a goddess, she’s just floating through the kitchen,” he later said, still in disbelief.

According to New Idea: “She took a day out of her busy schedule to film MasterChef under a military-like veil of secrecy,” the publication’s source revealed.

“The judges and contestants couldn’t believe their eyes when pop superstar Katy strode into the MasterChef kitchen.”

MasterChef: All Stars continues Sunday night from 7.30 pm on Channel 10.

House Rules’ Katie hits back at judges' cruel remarks

They were deemed the team to beat, but Katie and Alex’s good run on House Rules came to an abrupt halt last night when the entry, hallway and loungeroom they transformed fell flat for all three judges.

The duo, along with the rest of the teams, faced one of House Rules' most challenging transformations, taking to the tools for Tim’s family home renovation in Melbourne. But with two of Katie and Alex's rooms being small, they admitted they didn’t have much to work with.

Their design ideas this week were also criticised by the judges, with Wendy Moore branding the couple as “lazy”.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen scored the pair a disappointing 3 out of 10. Bowen then went on to question the couple’s place in the competition.

LLB didn't hold back with his feedback this week. Good news for shoppers: Millers, Katies and Rivers given last minute lifeline

Fans of Australian clothing outlets Millers, Katies and Rivers have woken up to some good news this morning, with confirmation fashion retailer Noni B will be purchasing the long-suffering chains from Speciality Fashion Group.

9news.com.au reports the $31 million cash deal will add 823 stores to Noni B’s already busy portfolio of brands including Rockmans, W.Lane and BeMe.

Speciality Fashion Group will also lose control of Crossroads and Autograph as part of the deal, but will retail ownership over its last remaining brand, City Chic.

Noni B CEO Scott Evans was bullish about the acquisition, saying the five brands had the potential to treble the group’s total annual sales to around $1 billion.

"This is another exciting step forward for Noni B Group and represents the acquisition of five well-known and established, iconic Australian brands that are both complementary and highly synergistic to our existing portfolio," said Mr Evans.

"With the acquisition of the Specialty Assets, Noni B Group will become one of the pre-eminent woman's apparel retailers in Australia, whilst retaining our solid, focussed market position."

The brands purchased by Noni B posted a loss of $6.2 million for the 2017 calendar year, but Mr Evans believes the Noni B Group has the means to turn the brands around.

"The businesses we're acquiring are underperforming for a number of reasons. However, we believe our disciplined approach to costs of doing business, combined with our customer focus, will ensure a successful turnaround," said Evans.

"One of the key benefits of this merger is that we will be able to quickly achieve a number of savings and efficiencies that we anticipate will result in the acquired portfolio of assets breaking even on an EBITDA basis in FY2019, whilst we work to improve their overall operating performance."

Specialty Fashion Group chair Anne McDonald said this deal will give the Group more time to concentrate on developing the City Chic brand.

"In a challenging and rapidly changing retail environment, SFH has been successful in building City Chic into a market leader in the attractive plus-size segment of the women's apparel market," said McDonald.

"The business has strong cash flow generation and significant future earnings growth potential.

"The transaction will provide the funding flexibility, corporate structure and management focus required to realise City Chic's longer term full potential."

What are your thoughts?

Jo Griggs hits back at Tracey Holmes over Commonwealth Games criticism

Channel Seven commentator and former athlete Johanna Griggs has hit back at critics that claimed Seven had a “minute by minute” rundown of the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony.

ABC journalist Tracey Holmes wrote a piece yesterday stating the network was briefed on the closing ceremony and the fact athletes would be “largely snubbed from the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony despite claiming to have been as shocked by the decision as the millions who watched.”

Holmes wrote: “Prior to the Gold Coast closing ceremony all rights holders, including Channel Seven, were given a minute-by-minute briefing on Saturday morning detailing how the closing ceremony would unfold — complete with a 34-page media guide.

“The guide makes no mention of athletes marching in as part of the ceremony. Organisers confirmed Channel Seven had a number of representatives at that briefing.”

In a lengthy statement released on Twitter, Griggs hit back saying she wanted to “clarify and correct” several claims made by Holmes.

“I still have the guide,” Griggs said. “At no point in the guide does it mention that there wouldn’t be one single shot shown of athletes watching the performances. We assumed, like every other Closing Ceremony ever shown, that the host’s vision would feature athletes non-stop, celebrating, letting their hair down… like we all expect at the Closing Ceremony.

“If we’d left that briefing room with any indication given to us that no athletes would feature, then of course we would have made other arrangements to capture those moments. But instead we thought we were going to broadcast an innovative and exciting show.

Firstly, thank u to everyone for your overwhelming support around this issue. I’m still sad that a wonderful Commonwealth Games has been tarnished with such a sad ending. But when someone has a crack at your integrity, u have to respond. I hope this answers some of your questions pic.twitter.com/BHY1mTvsSO
— Johanna Griggs (@JohGriggs7) April 16, 2018

Griggs went onto say that those who were in the meeting knew the organisers were “going to try something different” by having athletes in the stadium already when it began at 8.30pm.

“There was no TV rehearsal of the Closing Ceremony as there is for the Opening Ceremony. That isn’t necessarily unique, but clearly a rehearsal would have rung alarm bells,” she wrote.

“As rights holders, we were allowed one camera in the stadium, a news camera, on the condition we wouldn’t show the vision for 24 hours. We made the decision to show it anyway at the back of the ceremony when we realised what a farce the Closing Ceremony was turning out to be.

“I stand by the fact that we could only show the vision supplied to us on the night, and that whoever made the decision to not cut away to the athletes made a bad call. And the athletes left because they didn’t feel at all included in the show, which is such a shame as they were the real stars who should have been celebrated.”

The conditions applied to Channel Seven for the Commonwealth Games, Griggs said, were “very different to anything we’ve experienced before”.

Griggs made headlines when she told viewers live on air she was “furious” with the closing ceremony organisers for “wrecking a tradition” by choosing not to show pictures of athletes or the flagbearer, Kurt Fearnley.
