Taser victim's family break silence following verdict

Clare Nowland's daughter, Kerrie Paske, has broken her silence for the first time in 18 months since her 95-year-old mum died after she was tasered by a police officer.

On Wednesday, after Senior Constable Kristian White was found guilty of the manslaughter of her mother, Kerrie finally opened up about her grief.

"What happened to mum shouldn't have happened. She didn't deserve it," she told A Current Affair.

Kerrie broke down in tears outside the NSW Supreme Court after the jury handed down its verdict,

She recalled the final conversation she had with her mother shortly after the incident.

"Right at the end I just told her how much I loved her and thanked her for a beautiful life," she told A Current Affair.

"Pretty quickly after that she went."

Kerrie is one of Nowland's eight children, and said that the jury's verdict was "good news" for all of them.

"We all think we got the best mum, she was a good mum. She was a tough lady," she added.

"She didn't deserve that, she really didn't."

While Nowland's family maintained their silence since her death, Kerrie revealed that they were worried their mother's memory would be tarnished because she was holding a knife during the confrontation with police.

"At the very start of all this court case they were painting a real picture of Mum being a really vicious sort of a lady - or that's how I felt," Kerrie recalled.

"That worried me a little bit but she's just not like that."

"It's all very well mentioning this knife but she used to get fixated on things. It used to be pens," she explained.

"When we first heard (of the confrontation), I thought 'I bet she thought she had a pen in her hand', but she didn't."

Nowland is survived by her eight children, 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, with many of them coming from Cooma to sit in the public gallery throughout the trial.

Following the guilty verdict, Senior Constable White's employment is "under review", as he was previously suspended with pay throughout the proceedings.

"The officer's employment is currently under review. I expect to consider that matter next week," NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

"The death of Clare Nowland is a terrible tragedy and my deepest condolences go to the Nowland family,' Commissioner Webb added.

"This should never have happened."

Images: A Current Affair

"Someone is going to die": Kerri-Anne slams "irresponsible" Elle Macpherson interview

Kerri-Anne Kennerley has slammed Elle Macpherson for announcing that she allegedly "cured" her breast cancer after shunning the advice of doctors and opting for "holistic" treatment paths instead, while also taking aim at 60 Minutes for airing an interview with the supermodel where she doubled down on her beliefs.

In her new memoir, Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself, Macpherson revealed that at the age of 53, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and decided to go against doctors orders for her treatment.

The 60-year-old recalled how her doctors recommended a mastectomy with radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, plus reconstruction of her breast to fight the illness, and how she instead decide to forge her own path of "holistic wellness" to beat the disease without the use on conventional medicines, which she claims "cured" her cancer.

“It really gave me an opportunity to dig deep in my inner sense to find a solution that worked for me," she told Australian's Women's Weekly. “It was a wonderful exercise in being true to myself, trusting myself and trusting the nature of my body and the course of action that I had chosen.”

Macpherson then doubled down on her decision in an exclusive interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday, in which she claimed that there is “no possibility” of her breast cancer recurring given “the body has the infinite capacity to heal”, and making the bizarre remark that it’s “fear” that actually makes people ill.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley, who is also a survivor of breast cancer, was one of many who found problems with the interview, as she said it was dangerous for the news program to broadcast such information.

“Think of the poor oncologists, surgeons and doctors today … inundated with phone calls from people (saying) ‘I’m rethinking my treatment because Elle Macpherson said this and that’,” she told The Australian.

“I understand Elle … did what she thought was good for her personally, but the very fact she has resisted any other medical treatment … absolutely terrifies me.”

“Without question, it will result in the future that somebody will take that line and feel confident enough to try and do it themselves naturally, and someone is going to die.”

Kennerley, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, said the 60 Minutes report should've been more "balanced" by having expert testimony from doctors as a counterargument to Elle's claims.

“(60 Minutes reporter) Tracy (Grimshaw) did a piece to camera about it. But to be seriously responsible, you have to have an oncologist who could actually balance Elle’s remarks,” Kennerley said.

“I believe 60 Minutes was irresponsible by not having an oncologist who would give an alternative point of view. Elle’s given her natural point of view, and she’s followed through with it. They should have absolutely gotten an oncologist that said ‘as an oncologist, I’ve seen this type of cancer and many other types of cancers in my 30-year career. People who have not followed the advice have died.'”

Image credits: 60 Minutes / Instagram

"They lied": Kerri-Anne Kennerley blasts I’m A Celeb

And so instead of being in there, the three weeks I committed to, I got out in three days. They lied.”

Sursok asked her to elaborate on the promises they made, but Kennerley refused.

“I don’t want to go into it now. History. And I’m even dumbfounded that I said to myself after I’ve gone, oh my God. I avoided exactly what happened for 10 years.

“ … If I had thought about it for one more nanosecond and the things that were said to me were not said to me, I wouldn’t have done it in a heartbeat.”

Kennerley tearfully quit I'm A Celebrity last year after clashing with MAFS star Domenica Calarco, who she claimed called her "the most self-centred b***h” she’d ever met during an eating challenge.

The TV veteran added that going on the show was the "dumbest" decision she has ever made.

“Comes out as absolutely number one dumb and as backed by several of my friends – especially straight after [I left IAC], them going, ‘You didn’t tell us, we would’ve locked you in a room if you had said you were going’,” she admitted.

“But I don’t know … I’ve always thought I was pretty bulletproof, and then you get wounded and move on. "It was unbecoming": Domenica Calarco opens up on her feud with Kerri-Anne

Domenica Calarco has opened up on her fiery feud with Kerri-Anne Kennerley in the I'm a Celeb jungle.

The outspoken MAFS contestant was booted from the jungle in a shock elimination on Monday night, and has spoken out her now infamous argument with the TV presenter.

While in the jungle, Domenica and Kerri-Anne clashed over Kerri-Anne's refusal to participate in team challenges, prompting Dom to tell her she had “no respect” and that she’d never met anyone “so selfish”.

Fellow celeb Dicko also revealed after his exit last week that Calarco had also called Kennerley a “c**t” in scenes that didn’t make it to air.

Chatting exclusively with news.com.au, Calarco confirmed that she did drop the C-bomb, admitting that her language during the argument was “unacceptable”.

She also privately asked producers to pass on an apology to Kennerley, who abruptly quit the show after just three days after the clash.

“I haven’t spoken to her personally because I was in the jungle but I had passed on a message to her,” Calarco said.

“I have apologised for my language, it was unbecoming. I wouldn’t use that language again, now that I’m fed."

“But in the heat of the moment, I was struggling mentally. The sleep deprivation, the food deprivation, it gets to you. So for me, it was a culmination of all of that."

“I’m not proud of the language, but I stand by how I felt. And I still feel that [way].”

Despite the explosive fight, Domenica said she was shocked at Kerri-Anne's decision to leave the jungle.

“I kind of thought KAK had a little bit more in her. I didn’t think she’d throw in the towel,” she said, before adding one final blow, “[But] she did have to get back to Port Douglas on April 22 for a golf tournament, so …”

Calarco said Kennerley’s refusal to attempt any of the difficult challenges in order to “get her campmates fed” became the source of her frustrations, and ultimately led to her outburst.

“KAK was constantly getting voted in [to do challenges] because people wanted to see her push herself out of her comfort zone, but before we even headed in, she was adamant she wasn’t going to try,” she said.

“And I was terrified of the food challenges, I have a phobia of vomiting, it was my nightmare fuel situation, but I knew I was going to try because we needed to bring home stars, everyone was starving."

“You’ve got to be selfless, it’s not about you, it’s about feeding everyone. So it was that frustration of knowing we were gonna get nowhere with her.”

Now that Domenica has recovered from her deprivations of the jungle, she said she is open to a reconciliation with Kerri-Anne and a chance to apologise in person.

“[If I saw her] I’d say, ‘I’d love to get a Pinot gris with you, my shout,’” she said.

“Obviously she’s no longer in Africa but if the chance comes up I’d happily have a chat with her.”

I'm A Celeb evictee Dicko has opened up on the dramatic fight that led to Kerri-Anne Kennerley's abrupt exit from the show.

Kerri-Anne quit the show after just three days, after she was embroiled in an argument with Dicko, MAFS star Domenica Calarco and radio host Woody Whitelaw, as the four contestants were taking part in one of the show's infamous food challenges.

The challenges are notorious for making contestants eat disgusting foods, and as a result, Kerri-Anne refused to participate.

Her continued refusal to take part in challenges – in which contestants win stars, translating to meals for their hungry campmates – was too much for Domenica, who declared she had “never met anyone so selfish,” and insisted KAK had “literally no decency or respect.”

Speaking candidly on the Kyle and Jackie O Show on Thursday morning, Dicko explained that things got even nastier when the cameras weren't rolling.

He said that Dom had called Kerri-Anne the c-word, who was "all class" in her response to the insult.

Speaking to news.com.au just hours after he was voted out of camp, Dicko said that while he couldn’t condone “how easily Dom went from nought to Gremlin in five seconds,” he shared her frustrations with how Kennerley played the game.

“I did keep slapping my forehead every time she’d insinuate that she wasn’t going to get involved in any of the challenges in any meaningful way,” he said.

“She wasn’t going to do this or that – well, why are you here? It’s not actually a camping trip. The only way we get fed is with these stars, and if you’re not prepared to have a crack, we’re going to go hungry."

“I honestly think she hadn’t truly grasped that, which is so confusing. She’s a smart woman, you’d presume she’s got management … I don’t understand how they didn’t know what she was stepping into.”

While the fight between the two women was so severe that it lead to Kerri-Anne quitting the show, Dicko admitted he didn't take it seriously in the moment.

“If I’m really honest, myself and Woody were off to one side laughing our tits off. I probably should’ve been a bit more grown up, but watching Australian TV royalty duke it out with a gnarly upstart was just precious – and I had a front-row seat,” he confessed.

“I’d like to be the grown-up in the room and say, ‘This shouldn’t have happened, it’s dragged TV through the mud,’ but I laughed like a drain for two days afterwards I’m afraid. I kind of enjoyed it.”

Image credits: I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here

Kerri-Anne Kennerley's shocking assault allegation

Kerri-Anne Kennerley has opened up about a shocking incident of sexual assault involving a former network boss.

The former TV presenter shared the story with her campmates on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here, as she revealed that the unnamed male had “unzipped” her dress during a staff gathering.

“It was a Christmas party for our show, and as I was standing there, the back of my dress, the zip, was being unzipped,” she said in a piece to camera.

“So as I swung around to basically say stop it and deck said person, I realised it was the station owner. And I did say, ‘Zip it up or I will deck you.’”

The 66-year-old did not specify when the incident occurred, and did not name the person involved.

Earlier in the episode, Kennerley had been sharing her thoughts on the rife misogyny within the media industry, as she told former host of The Project Peter Helliar she thought it was a "boys club".

“Chauvinism, harassment, hideous behaviour,” she said, describing some of the men she’d encountered throughout her career.

“Executives and producers hitting on the younger girls in there. You know, somebody hits on you and you just draw the line in the sand and everybody gets back to work, that was just the way it was.”

Kennerley added that, in her experience in media, female employees had often been left to pick up the slack for male co-workers.

“The women were all researchers, producers and the guys would sort of tick off yes, yes and then go to lunch for four hours,” she said.

“And the show would all get together because most of the women did all of the work. At the end of the day, you just want to make good TV.

“It has always been just about get a job, hang on to it as long as you can, do as well as you can, and when it is over, you get another one. You just keep doing it, keep turning up.”

Kerri-Anne's extensive media career began in 1981 as she became the host of Good Morning Australia, and she stayed on the air until Kerri-Anne's final episode aired in 2011.

She then became a regular co-host on Ten’s Studio 10 for two years, but left the show in 2020.

Image credits: I'm a Celebrity... Kerri-Anne Kennerley heads to the jungle … on one condition

Former TV presenter Kerri-Anne Kennerly is returning to screens across Australia as one of 13 contestants heading into the South African jungle for the 2023 season of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!

However, while the others will be forced to present a natural front to the cameras, Kerri-Anne wriggled her way into maintaining the “glamorous” look viewers have come to expect from her after 40 years in television.

While speaking to Ten’s Nick Bond, Kerri-Anne revealed that the network’s head of entertainment, Stephen Tate, has been trying to get her to participate in the show every year since it began - something that gave Kerri some extra power when she finally did decide to dive in.

She noted that the final offer had been one she “couldn’t refuse”, but that there had been “a few provisos” along with it. The most important of them was that she “get[s] to take makeup”, with Kerri stating that “natural is very overrated.”

“I can’t be bothered doing that much,” she added, “but it won’t be natural because natural takes a long time. Every girl knows that.”

But that’s not the only difference viewers can expect to see between Kerri and her fellow contestants, with the veteran presenter also scheduled to make her entrance a day after the rest.

Not that she’s concerned, instead suggesting to Bond that they should simply “get better management. Not my problem.”

The opinion of viewers doesn’t look set to faze her either. For anyone doubting that she’ll be able to handle the ‘rustic’ side of camp life, from outdoor bathroom facilities to some of the show’s more extreme challenges, Kerri had already dismissed their take, explaining that “I literally have ridden camels, bulls, horses … held snakes, including cobras and red-bellied blacks … been bitten by a ferret, been scratched by a lion cub.”

Coupled with her experience with heights, Kerri-Anne may yet prove hard to beat for the others vying for the crown with her.

12 dropped into camp the day before Kerri-Anne, each eager to face the challenges the jungle has in store for them, and to ultimately come out on top.

Former Australian Idol judge Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickinson was the first to land, with Married At First Sight’s Domenica Calarco following suit, then Yokayi Footy’s Bianca Hunt, AFL Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney, Home & Away’s Debra Lawrance, and Geordie Shore’s Nathan Henry.

Up next came KIIS National Drive Radio Show’s Woody Whitelaw, celebrity chef Anna Polyviou, Olympic lightweight boxer Harry Garside, netball’s Liz Ellis, Below Deck’s Aesha Scott, and comedian Peter Helliar to round them out.

Images: @kerriannekennerly / Instagram

How Kerri-Anne Kennerley overcame the loss of her beloved husband and mother

Kerri-Anne Kennerley has opened up about moving on following her beloved husband and mother’s deaths.

The 69-year-old television veteran lost her husband John at the age of 78 in February 2019, after a tragic fall in 2016.

He was left paralysed after falling from a balcony while taking photos of Kerri-Anne during a golfing tournament in Coffs Harbour, NSW, in March 2016.

Her mother Grace died in May 2022 and that was the final straw for Kennerley who decided to make a change.

"I think you just need to know it's time, and it was certainly time. Time for something new,” she told Woman’s Day.

Kennerley sold off all her belongings and moved out of the massive home she shared with John for 23 years.

The house “took over an entire block” and Kennerley has finally settled into an apartment in Sydney’s Double Bay.

She explained the change was a long time coming as she still goes through “waves” of grief and loss.

"It takes a very long time to just go through the waves,” she said.

"It does get ever so slightly easier as the years pass and you start to remember more of the beautiful and fabulous times."

Despite his passing, Kennerley says she still feels John’s presence around her with his trophies, smoking pipes, and a digger.

When asked about whether the pair spoke about moving on after his passing, Kennerley just replied: “Nope, nope, nope”.

Images: Instagram

“Age is no barrier”: Fans rally after Kerri Pottharst's brutal treatment

Viewers of SAS Australia have called out the treatment of Olympic gold medallist Kerri Pottharst on the show, criticising Ant Middleton’s comments on her looks and love life.

The former professional beach volleyball player revealed she went on the program to show women life doesn’t end once they reach a certain age.

As the oldest competitor on the show, the 55-year-old has completed tough challenges alongside her younger competitors, including other athletes.

Tuesday’s challenges

In the first exercise on Tuesday night’s episode, Pottharst was singled out as the weakest member in a task viewers described as “cruel”, “heartbreaking”, and “bloody hard”.

As a result, Pottharst had to lead one of two teams through a river paddle and mountain climb.

Her team finished second, after Pottharst tripped and was screamed at by directing staff.

Later in the episode, Pottharst displayed her leadership skills in a kit inspection and her team looked poised to win.

However, her water bottle was found to be half empty and she is told to pour it over her head.

For losing the challenge, her team stood outside for more than two hours while Pottharst was still wet.

Image: Channel 7

When they were finally allowed inside, Jana Pittman attempted to cheer Pottharst up.

“I wanted to show other women you can take on a challenge, that’s seemingly impossible, I’m digging my heels in, I’m going to stay here as long as I can,” Pottharst said.

Pottharst’s insulting interrogation

When directing staff brought Pottharst in for an interview to discuss her failings, Ant Middleton told her, “You look like you’ve aged 10 years in two days”.

After asking how old she is and hearing she is 55, he said, “can I be honest with you, it shows”.

In contrast, 51-year-old Pete Murray, the second oldest competitor who left the show due to an injury, did not receive any comments about his age while on the show.

“I believe age is no barrier,” Pottharst told directing staff.

“Life is not over when you turn 50. It’s about challenging yourself. And this is the ultimate challenge… I love pushing myself.”

When asked if her 14-year-old son thinks she’s nuts for going on the show, Pottharst said no.

“I think you’re nuts,” Middleton replied.

“There’s too many women who think life is over when you hit 40, 50, whatever and it’s all downhill, I completely disagree, I think you can get better and you can keep challenging yourself,” she replied.

Later, Middleton asked whether Pottharst had “a man in her life”, and told her she must be lonely when she said she didn’t.

“I can see that little bit of loner in you,” he said. “I just feel there’s a little bit of loneliness there.”

Image: Channel 7

The directing staff told her she was “slowly deteriorating” but still “psychologically strong”, prompting Pottharst to admit she feels “most fragile” on her own.

“I know I’m going to feel that on selection night, the lights go out the body’s aching and I have to get up the next day and do it again, that’s probably where I’ll shed a tear,” she said.

Viewers shared their support for Pottharst on Twitter, calling her a “star” and an “incredible woman”.

Others slammed Channel 7 and Middleton for their line of questioning.

“Jeez, the toxic pr*ck parade that is Channel 7,” one person wrote.

“Do they ask Sam Burgess if there’s a woman in his life??” another asked.

“Omg, is it really necessary for Ant to tell her she looks old. I just think that’s unnecessarily rude,” a third said.

“It shows! You pr*ck Ant,” another commented.

Others suggested that men and women were being treated on the show.

“Oh look, SAS going harder on the women than the men,” another person shared.

Image: Channel 7

“Make yourself heard!” Why Kerri-Anne Kennerley is suing the government

Kerri-Anne Kennerley is taking a stand for older Australians, with plans to sue the Federal Government.

After her husband John suffered a fall over a garden hedge and became a quadriplegic, he required 24/7 care.

However, Kerri-Anne and John quickly found out that they wouldn’t be receiving support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), all because of their age.

Instead, they and many others aged over 65 who are disabled were put into the My Aged Care package for senior Australians.

Under the scheme, John received ten hours of care a week.

“It was pathetic,” Kerri-Anne said.

Though she and John were able to afford the extra help he needed, many Aussies aren’t as lucky.

Helen Bonning is one of those people, who is in a wheelchair and receives just a few hundred dollars a year from the scheme to go towards helping her in her daily life.

In comparison, someone with her level of disability who is under 65 years old would receive about $80,000 a year.

“If you were declined the NDIS because of your colour, age or sexual orientation there’d be a public outcry,” she said.

“But it seems it’s OK to discriminate against age?”

The differences between the NDIS and My Aged Care often means many older Australians are going without the equipment and care they need.

“My wheelchair needs to be upgraded every five years, it costs $25,000. The hoist to get me out of bed is $10,000. I just don’t have that sort of money,” Helen said.

This lack of support for older Australians is why Kerri-Anne has led her support to the cause of getting them some fairness, urging all of us to “make yourself heard”.

“So many people will be affected in the future,” she said.

“So many people are affected now … make some noise!”

Image: Kerri-Anne Kennerley / Instagram

Kerri-Anne Kennerley says "most men are fantastic" after parliamentary sex scandals

TV veteran Kerri-Anne Kennerley has given her take on the latest parliamentary sexual misconduct scandals to rock Canberra in the last month or more.

She told The Daily Telegraph's Confidential that most men, in general, are not to blame when it comes to sexual violence against women.

"Most [men] are actually fantastic. I’d like to see one that has as many men marching for the same reason because it’s not a female problem it is a social problem.”

The "marches" KAK is referring to were the #March4Justice rallies, held in more than 40 Australian cities and towns, had thousands marching to protest against sexual violence against women.

She also shared her opinion with The Daily Mail.

"I think the next march, I want to see just as many men marching side by side with women, because it is not a female sexual harassment issue," she stated.

"It's a bullying issue, it's a social issue."

"I think it's important to have people standing side by side to say this behaviour - whoever it's happening to - is not good enough," she added.

Kennerley's comments come after other prominent figures in media, including Ita Buttrose, spoke their opinions about the issues in Canberra.

“I think every woman in Australia should support the call (for better safety) and make sure our voice is heard,” Buttrose said.
