Two decades of Kath & Kim

It has been 21 years since Kath & Kim graced the screens and became one of Australia’s most beloved series.

Arguably one of the most quotable TV shows, it saw Gina Riley and Jane Turner rise to fame.

Turner, who plays Kath in the hit comedy, became a representative for the United Nations during and after the show, travelling to refugee camps and assisting charity efforts in Africa.

She then made her theatrical debut in London in 2021, performing in the Aussie play, Holding the Man.

Her real-life personality isn’t so similar to Kath, "I'm actually quite a shy person, quite reserved," she told The Age in 2004.

"I hate seeing myself on film and hearing my voice ... It's quite hard to be yourself, I think. Maybe that's why a lot of actors are actors – because they get to cover up and hide.”

Turner is now 62 and married with three children.

As for Kim, Gina Riley appeared in the drama series The Beautiful Lie and the comedy Please Like Me.

She also starred in a stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy thriller North by Northwest in 2015. She’s also appeared in stage adaptations of Into the Woods and Chicago.

In 2013, Riley revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was fortunately caught early and she made a full recovery post-treatment.

Riley, 62, is married to Rick McKenna and they share a daughter Maddie, who is also an actress.

Royal fans react to Kim Kardashian's purchase of Princess Diana's jewellery

The Attallah Cross, famously worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, has reportedly been purchased at auction by none other than reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

Kim, best known for her time on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, purchased the piece for $197,453 USD (approximately $284,654.04 AUD) at the Sotheby’s Royal & Noble sale.

The necklace was seen on Diana at a Gala for Birthright, now known as Wellbeing of Women, in October 1987. Diana paired the piece with a purple velvet Catherine Walker gown. It features 5.25 carats of circular-cut diamonds that accentuate square-cut amethysts in a cross formation.

It was designed by luxury jewellery designer and former crown jeweller Garrard, who made numerous pieces for Diana. Most notably, her iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring, now in the possession of Catherine, Princess of Wales .

Naim Attallah, first owner of the cross, loaned it to her several times throughout their friendship. as friends with Diana and loaned it to her several times. According to reports, the cross hasn’t been seen in public since it was last worn by Diana, who was the only one to ever don it.

New owner Kim Kardashian is no stranger to sporting vintage pieces. Most recently, Kim divided the internet when she wore the crystal-encrusted dress Marilyn Monroe wore to serenade US President John F Kennedy with “Happy Birthday” in 1962.

The internet erupted with outrage when the news of Kim’s jewellery purchase broke, with critics quick to share their opinion.

“Kim Kardashian owning Princess Diana’s cross necklace has put me in a vile mood,” came one gripe.

Kim Kardashian Acquires Bejeweled Cross Worn By Princess Diana For $197,453 https://t.co/wglEwLyutg pic.twitter.com/uz1VqiJT8x

— Forbes (@Forbes) January 18, 2023

One individual referenced a popular internet meme featuring Kardashian, in which she was seen crying in the ocean after losing a diamond earring. Doubtful about the necklace’s future, they wrote, “and next week it’s gonna be ‘Kim Kardashian has lost Princess Diana’s iconic diamond cross necklace in the ocean’.”

Some fans took the time to point out that the cross was never actually owned by Diana, with one tweeting, “Princess Diana did not own it. The jewellery company let her borrow it for an event.”

A few seized the opportunity to try and drag Harry and Meghan into the mix, while some tried to make light of the situation amongst the outrage, bringing it full circle with a throwback to the dress saga with, “sorry Marilyn Monroe, Kim Kardashian is now taking style cues from Princess Diana.”

Images: Getty Images

Viewers slam Kath and Kim for “false advertising”

Viewers have been left disappointed with the reboot of Kath and Kim after months of promoting the return of the Aussie show.

Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life aired on Channel 7 on November 20 with fans gearing up for the show’s exciting 20th anniversary.

However, within minutes of the show airing, social media was flooded with messages of “disappointment” because only 10 minutes of new footage was aired.

“Well this is disappointing. I thought it was a new episode #KathandKim,” someone wrote.

“This episode is like watching the bonus content you get when you buy a special edition DVD from Sanity #kathandkim #oureffluentlife,” another commented.

“Anyone else feeling cheated that we're not getting a whole new episode,” another wrote.

The 20th anniversary reboot, which showed never-before-seen bloopers and moments from the previous seasons, went on for 74 minutes.

There were special appearances from Kylie Minogue, Michael Bublé, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Eric Bana, Mick Molloy, Tony Martin, Richard E Grant, Barry Humphries, and Julia Gillard.

Channel 7 did make it clear however that the show will only include around 10 minutes of new footage.

Avid fans defended the screening, pointing out that it was evident from the beginning that the 20th anniversary episode would not be something new.

“The only people complaining about #kathandkim are the ones who chose not to read anything about it prior to tonight. It was never advertised as a new episode. It was always going to be a celebration of the show’s history,” someone pointed out.

“I feel like I'm the only person in Australia who picked up this was going to be a greatest hits/behind the scenes special, not a brand new episode #kathandkim,” another wrote.

“If you are one of the morons complaining about the #kathandkim retrospective, if you had half a brain you'd be dangerous. It was always promoted and advertised as a retrospective, it's not their problem you're dumb,” someone else commented.

Despite all the anger, 786,000 Aussies tuned in to watch the show.

Image: Channel 7

Kath and Kim “cancelled” before it began

Kath & Kim creators have revealed that the ABC almost didn’t let the show go ahead just days before shooting started.

With the show’s 20th anniversary coming up in the form of Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life, a legion of fans all around the world are gearing up for the foxy ladies of Fountain Lake.

However, the four seasons, a 2005 telemovie Da Kath & Kim Code and the 2012 movie, Kath & Kimderella almost didn’t come to be because of the ABC.

Gina Riley, who plays Kim in the show revealed that the ABC almost pulled the plug on the show before shooting began.

“As I remember it, it was the Friday afternoon and we were going to pre-production the following Monday and we got a call saying, ‘It’s no longer the direction we want to go in,’” Riley recalled to The Age.

“We were completely rocked, but we thought we’ve got a pretty watertight deal memo. And they were like, ‘We’re doing you a favour; you don’t want to do this to yourselves.’

“And then we went, ‘OK, we’ll go somewhere else.’ And they said, ‘Oh, no, you can’t take it anywhere else.’ So that was when we went, ‘You know what? This is very unjust. And we’re going to fight it.’”

Riley and her co-star/writer Jane Turner weren’t taking no for an answer and “fought back the decision”.

“We were very determined to make the show we had pitched, and in reality we didn’t stop writing and working on it. It was too awful so we just pretended it wasn’t happening.”

Soon after the bad news, Australian television producer Sandra Levy was appointed as head of TV at the ABC and she was “sorting out” the series.

Luckily for them, they were able to sort it out because ABC was committed to the project but wanted to tune out some fine details.

Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life will show over two nights on Channel 7 and 7Plus for the 20th anniversary.

Creators Gina Riley and Jane Turner along with stars Magda Szubanski, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn will make an appearance along with a star studded cast.

There will be special appearances from Kylie Minogue, Michael Bublé, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Eric Bana, Mick Molloy, Tony Martin, Richard E Grant, Barry Humphries, and even a former prime minister.

The reboot will include never-before-seen moments as well as hilarious bloopers from the archives of more than 1000 tapes and 240 shoot days.

There will also be a tribute to the late cricketer and Sharon’s favourite cricketer, Shane Warne, who passed away earlier in the year.

Image: ABC

Famous ‘Napalm Girl’ receives final burns treatment

The woman known around the globe as “Napalm Girl” has received her final round of treatment for the burns she received as a child when her village in Vietnam was hit by a napalm bomb.

Kim Phuc was just nine years old when South Vietnamese planes dropped the bomb on the village of Trảng Bàng in 1972 and she was photographed running naked from her home, covered in third-degree burns after her clothes caught on fire.

The iconic photo, taken by Vietnamese-American photographer Nick Ut before he rushed Ms Phuc to a hospital, won a Pulitzer Prize and became a symbol of the awful consequences of war.

Ms Phuc, who has since become a Canadian citizen, has lived with the pain and scars from the attack ever since.

On Tuesday, she underwent a 12-hour medical procedure in Miami, with local media reporting it was the final course of laser therapy for her scars.

Kim Phuc underwent the last of her laser therapy treatments for the burns across her body, 50 years after she received them. Is Kath and Kim making a comeback?

Magda Szubanski is keeping tight-lipped on whether or not there will be a reboot of our favourite foxy ladies, Kath and Kim.

The actress, who played Kim’s second best friend Sharon Strzelecki, was asked about whether the rumours could be true.

"If I did I couldn't possibly tell you. If I did, I'd have to kill you and your publishers and everyone else," she told TV Week.

"It would be a bloodbath!"

She was also asked by the publication about whether she will come back as the beloved Sharon Strezelecki.

"Again, I can neither confirm or deny!" she replied.

Back in 2018, Magda mentioned the attention the show was getting years after it ended after Netflix picked it up.

However, Jane Turner who played Kath, said the show would have to be completely modernised to be in tune with today’s lifestyle.

"It would be very different now. There are always funny new trends and things Kath and Kim could put their spin on, which would be fun to do," she previously said.

Then in May 2021 she said she wasn’t exactly “too keen” on creating a fifth season of the show.

"I think it should be off the table... It holds such a special place in people's memories," she told The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

"If we did a live show, which was a "best of" or something like that, that's different. But to actually try and do a whole new series, I think you can never capture that magic again."

Image: Facebook

Marilyn Monroe dress allegedly damaged after Met Gala appearance

After sparking ire among fashion and history experts for wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic Happy Birthday Mr President gown at the Met Gala, images have emerged suggesting that Kim Kardashian may have damaged the 60-year-old garment.

Its current owner, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, has said that the dress was returned undamaged after Kardashian wore it.

Amanda Joiner, a vice president of licensing and publishing at Ripley’s, told the Daily Beast that “a lot of requirements” were put in place while it was handled.

And this is why every historical garment archivist and textile expert about had a coronary seeing Kim Kardashian in Marilyn Monroe's dress. https://t.co/XIs9MOeEiK

— Kathryn #GoBolts⛈️ Brightbill (@KEBrightbill) June 13, 2022

“The dress was never with Kim alone. It was always with a Ripley’s representative. We always ensured that at any time we felt that the dress was in danger of ripping or we felt uncomfortable about anything, we always had the ability to say we were not going to continue with this,” Joiner said.

“We did two different fittings with her. The first one was in L.A. in April and then the second one later in April to see whether or not the dress would fit. The biggest challenge that we had is that we really wanted to make sure that we kept the integrity of the dress and the preservation, because it’s 60 years old, and we feel that it’s such an iconic piece of fashion, both from a historical perspective, but also from a pop culture perspective.”

However, Pop Culture posted side-by-side photos of the gown allegedly from before and after Kardashian wore it, with the ‘after’ image showing signs of stretched fabric around one of the snaps and missing crystals around the back closure.

the quotes are so damn ignorant, it's not about the actual dress. it's about the meaning. marilyn was used all her life, she hardly had anything that was truly her own. I mean yes it’s nice to pay homage to Marilyn but she could’ve had a new dress made and replicated. This was a timeless and iconic artefact that’s been ruined,” one person commented.

“Leave it to Kim to destroy a historical piece of art,” another said.

“Congratulations to the Met Gala for showcasing a real-life example of why a conservation department like the Costume Institute is necessary for historically significant garments,” a third added.

Collector Scott Fortner, who also shared images of the dress’ alleged damage online, told Sky News it was “irresponsible” for the museum to loan the gown to Kardashian.

"I think the disappointment that I'm experiencing is Ripley has made multiple statements that they were doing everything that they could to protect and preserve the gown," he told the outlet.

"I do feel that it (was) irresponsible, this is not just a dress.

"This is a cultural icon. It's a political icon. It's a Hollywood icon.

"It's part of American history from an event that happened 60 years ago and…it should have been archived and preserved and taken care of."

The gown was made using 6,000 crystals and was hand-sewn by costumier Jean Lewis.

Images: @lmorrisette (Twitter) / Getty Images

Marilyn Monroe dress designer weighs in on Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala outfit

The designer who sketched Marilyn Monroe’s original ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’ dress has weighed in on Kim Kardashion’s choice to re-wear the dress at the Met Gala awards - and his opinion of it is less than glowing.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, 82-year-old costume designer Bob Mackie described Kardashian’s controversial outfit choice as a “big mistake”.

“[Monroe] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess,” he told the publication.

"She was just fabulous. Nobody photographs like that. And it was done for her. It was designed for her. Nobody else should be seen in that dress."

Mackie, whose claim to fame includes dressing Lucille Ball, Judy Garland and Cher, sketched the design for Monroe’s gown in 1962.

He then sent the sketch to his boss, French fashion designer Jean Louis, who made the gown a reality.

Kardashian caused a stir after she reached out to Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not’ museum in Orlando - which famously bought Monroe’s gown for $6.7 million in 2016 - and was allowed to try it in a private fitting.

They then workshopped how she could “fake” fitting into the dress for the 2022 Met Gala, in a move that has caused concern among fashion historians and collectors.

Scott Fortner, a Marilyn Monroe artefact collector, told People that, since the dress was exclusively designed for Monroe and involved her being nude while it was sewn to her body, it can be deduced that some “stress” was done to the dress when Kardashian gave it a try.

“The gown worn by anyone else will not be a precise fit,” Fortner said. “In this case, Kim Kardashian's measurements are somewhat different than Marilyn's. It's logically assumed the fabric and seams were stressed."

Alicia Malone, the Aussie TV host of Turner Classic Movies and the network’s new fashion series Follow the Thread, also told Entertainment Weekly that there’s an issue with Kardashian wearing an item so intrinsically tied to Monroe.

"I don't know what Kim Kardashian sees in Marilyn herself, or how much she knows about her history, but definitely now, Kim will be tied to that dress as Marilyn is," she said.

"So it'll be the Marilyn Monroe dress that Kim Kardashian also wore to the Met Gala."

Images: Getty Images

"How can they do this?" Iconic house of Kath and Kim demolished

The iconic house used in the popular Australian TV series that gave us foxy ladies Kath and Kim has been demolished.

Demolition works began on Monday on the property known as "Chateau Kath" in the fictional “effluent” suburb of Fountain Lakes.

Pete Rowsthorn, who played Brett in the series, said the house contained a lot of memories but it's time to move on.

“It was a weird house, if I bought it I'd probably pull it down too," he told ABC Melbourne radio.

"It had really quite small rooms … the squeaky back door, that was all natural sound. There was no foley man putting that on top.

"I played cricket in the backyard with Shane Warne, I danced in the garage with Kylie Minogue, I sat and had dinner with Barry Humphries dressed up as a monk.”

The home, actually located in the Melbourne suburb of Patterson Lakes, was last sold for $1.485 million in 2016.

Owner Joanne Kelly said it was time for a change as works begin to build a two-storey property for her family.

She held an open house in 2019 to raise money for cancer, which gave fans from all over the country to see the estate in person.

ABC rented the home from 2002 to 2007 for the filming of the series which has a large following.

It follows the story of a dysfunctional mother and daughter created and played by Jane Turner and Gina Riley.

Fans in the Facebook group “Da Kath & Kim appreciation society”, which has more than 114,500 followers have been left devastated at the home’s demolition.

Many questioned why the house would be purchased and renovated given its significance to fans all over.

“Why would you buy a perfectly good house.. and one that has (dare I say) cultural significance to a great number of people, and then destroy it? It makes no sense,” someone asked.

“I only had two reasons for wanting to visit Australia - to see the Kath & Kim house and visit Ramsay Street. Nothing goes right. Guess I’ll stay at home in the UK and drown my sorrows,” another said.

“Amazing how the demolition of the fake Kath and Kim house pulls on your heart strings. RIP to memories,” someone else commented.

“How is the house not ERITAGE listed!? Well, if it's not, it bloody well should be. The house is turn of the century, an Edwardian dream... BLOODY HOWARD,” another commented with references to the show.

“Bunch of crims, tearing this effluent home down. Should be heritage listed,” someone else commented.

“Why on earth are they doing this?? Is the new owner tired of fans stopping by?? This is honestly so awful of them,” someone asked.

“How can they do this!? This house is an important part of Australian culture!” another stated.

Images: Facebook

President Donald Trump grilled in 60 Minutes interview: "I'm not a baby"

US President Donald Trump has faced some tough questioning in an interview with the US’s 60 Minutes program, which airs on the CBS network. Journalist Lesley Stahl grilled the President on everything from his close ties with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Russian interference with the 2016 election, and the cutthroat nature of Capitol Hill.

In a sign of his tumultuous presidency, that has been filled with scandal and the resignation of several cabinet members and advisers, the commander-in-chief said he mistrusted some of his staff, and called Washington DC “a vicious, vicious place,” reports news.com.au. “I don’t trust everybody in the White House, I’ll be honest with you,” said Mr Trump.

“I’m not a baby. It’s a tough business. This is a vicious place. Washington DC is a vicious, vicious place. The attacks, the badmouthing, the speaking behind your back.

“I have some people that I’m not thrilled with. And I have other people that I’m beyond thrilled with.”

When questioning turned to President Trump’s close relationship with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, he was unrepentant about his recent comment that the pair “fell in love”.

“And then we fell in love, OK? No, really. He wrote me beautiful letters. And they’re great letters. We fell in love,” he said at a recent political rally.

Stahl took Mr Trump to task on the statement, reminding him of the Supreme Leader of North Korea’s shocking and cruel acts.

“I want to read you his resume,” said the journalist. “He presides over a cruel kingdom of repression. Gulags, starvation, reports that he had his half-brother assassinated, slave labour, executions — this is a guy you love?”

Lesley Stahl on Kim Jong Un: "He presides over a cruel kingdom of repression, gulags, starvation…slave labor, public executions. I mean, I’m not a baby. I know these things,” said the President. He put his recent remarks down to “a figure of speech”.

“Look. Look. I like, I get along with him, OK?” he said.

It seems the pair have gotten over the acrimony which involved threats of nuclear attacks and name calling.

“I believe he likes me. I like him,” said Mr Trump. “We have a good relationship.”

“I do trust him. I trust him. That doesn’t mean I can’t be proven wrong.”

On Russian interference in the 2016 election, the President admitted that “they meddled. But I think China meddled too,” he said. “I think, frankly, China is a bigger problem.”

He said that he had taken a “tough” stance with Russian President [check] Vladimir Putin over the matter, despite claims he’d avoided the accusations of political tampering.

“I think I’m very tough with him (Putin) personally. I had a meeting with him. The two of us. It was a very tough meeting and it was a very good meeting.”

Of the investigation into Russian interference in the election and possible collusion with US officials, Mr Trump said it was “very unfair".

“There was no collusion of any kind,” he said. “There is no collusion.”

In a rare moment of humility, President Trump admitted that he had made some missteps during his tenure so far, saying, “Everybody makes mistakes.”

He reiterated his scathing attack on Washington DC and its hard-bitten politicians as another learning curve since winning the top job, comparing the environment to the tough world of Manhattan real estate, a world he knows all too well.

“I always used to say the toughest people are Manhattan real estate guys. Now I say they’re babies,” said Mr Trump.

“This is the most deceptive, vicious world. It is vicious. It’s full of lies, deceit and deception.”

And again President Trump lashed out at media outlets that have questioned and criticised his presidency, calling them “dishonest".

“I never knew how dishonest the media was. I really mean it. I’m not saying that as a sound bite,” he said.

His antagonistic relationship with the media was apparent when he arrogantly dismissed Stahl’s probing on the issue.

“Lesley, it’s OK. I’m president and you’re not.”

Did you learn anything new about the US President from his latest interview? Let us know in the comments below.

From $200K to $25 – Grieving widow shocked to find late husband’s super fund drained dry

After Kim Garbutt’s husband, Craig, passed away 10 years ago, his family was expecting a cheque for more than $208,000 in death benefits from AMP – Craig’s superannuation fund. Instead, they received $25.09 13 days later.

The grieving widow was shocked to find that the account had only a small sum of money when she was under the impression that her husband had left her with $208,000.

“When the account arrived, I was a bit dumbfounded,” she told 7.30.

“Sometime after that I spoke to them and they were saying basically the account had run dry. They went, ‘So sad that he’s died but too bad, the accounts got no money in it.”

Ms Garbutt only discovered the account was $212 in arrears – and that AMP had cancelled the policy – five months before Craig’s death.

Before his death in 2008, Craig had fought an alcohol addiction which put strain on his marriage with Ms Garbutt. Although the two split shortly after the wedding, they decided to stay legally married for the sake of their two children.

Craig, who passed away at the age of 39, was described by Ms Garbutt as someone who was “super smart…he was funny, he liked to dress well.”

“He wasn’t ostentatious, he was bombastic, he was just a nice friendly guy. He was well-liked, he was well-loved.”

While he tried to seek help by attending rehab facilities, in the end, he couldn’t rid himself of his addiction. Before he passed away, Craig was using friends’ couches and his car to live out of after his business went bankrupt.

“He was in debt to what we think is $300,000 to $400,000 to maybe six or seven creditors. Phones had been cut off,” said Ms Garbutt.

After investigating, Ms Garbutt discovered that Craig had transferred $1621.93 into the account from his previous super fund in 2003, but in as little as 5 weeks, the amount was down to $1433.77 after he was charged over $188.16 in fees and premiums.

Even though Craig had no further contribution to his account after the initial $1621.93, AMP continued to deduct fees and charges – many of which were hidden.

AMP claims to have contacted Craig before his death to let him know that his account was low on funds and would be cancelled. They advised her that there was nothing more they can do.

According to Ms Garbutt, AMP was not cooperative and refused to speak with her on compassionate grounds, and since Craig’s passing, she has been struggling to compete with the insurance company about Craig’s superannuation and insurance.

Ms Garbutt reveals that while AMP sent her late husband letters regarding his fund, he was seriously ill and was not opening mail at the time.

A spokeswoman from AMP said that the company “strongly rejects” the idea that Ms Garbutt had been uninformed throughout the process.

“At no time were we informed that [Craig] was unwell, and we corresponded with him as early as seven months before his death that he was at risk of losing his valuable insurance,” said the spokeswoman.

“We do allow customers to reinstate lapsed policies based on medical evidence, however, we do not allow this where the reinstatement is due to the customer now wishing to claim.”

Ms Garbutt claims to have “begged and pleaded” with the insurance giant regarding where Craig’s money had gone, but AMP remained uncooperative.

“It was ‘Nope, we told Craig it was going to be cancelled’,” she said.

“I went, ‘Craig wasn’t functioning, we wouldn’t have read the letters’.”
