"Future leader": Search resumes for missing police officer

<p>Authorities are set to resume the desperate search for a Queensland police officer who went missing while surfing in New South Wales.</p> <p>Detective Inspector Jay Notaro was last seen surfing before his surfboard and keys were discovered at Broken Head in NSW’s Northern Rivers region at approximately 12:40pm on Tuesday.</p> <p>Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner Ian Leavers described Mr Notaro as a highly regarded officer with a promising future in the force.</p> <p>“Jay is one of the most competent and capable coppers I know, who has a great future in the police,” Leavers told <em>The Courier Mail</em>. “He is not only a friend, he is one of the future leaders of the organisation. I’m praying, he’s just a champion.”</p> <p>The extensive search operation on Tuesday involved Tweed/Byron Police, Police Rescue, Marine Area Command, Queensland PolAir and Surf Life Saving NSW.</p> <p>A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed that search efforts would continue on Wednesday morning, focusing on areas between Lennox Head and Cape Byron, with particular attention to Broken Head.</p> <p>Authorities and colleagues remain hopeful as the search continues for the experienced officer, with many praying for his safe return.</p> <p><em>Images: 9News</em></p>

Prince William shares deeply personal message over fallen war hero

<p>Prince William has shared a deeply personal message in remembrance of John 'Paddy' Hemingway, the last surviving pilot from the Battle of Britain, who passed away on St Patrick's Day at the age of 105.</p> <p>The Prince of Wales, a former Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot himself, took to social media on Tuesday to express his condolences and gratitude for Hemingway’s service.</p> <p>"I was sad to hear about the passing of John 'Paddy' Hemingway this morning, the last of 'The Few'," the 42-year-old royal wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "We owe so much to Paddy and his generation for our freedoms today. Their bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered. We shall never forget them."</p> <p>Hemingway, born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1919, joined the RAF as a teenager and became one of the young airmen who defended Britain during the pivotal 1940 Battle of Britain. Tragic end in search for missing six-year-old

<p>A desperate search for a missing six-year-old girl in southern New South Wales ended in tragedy on Sunday after authorities discovered a body in bushland.</p> <p>Airlie Montgomery was reported missing in North Nowra at around 2:15 pm, prompting an urgent police appeal for public assistance. Given her young age and medical conditions, authorities expressed grave concerns for her welfare.</p> <p>The little girl was last seen wearing a hot pink jumpsuit and no shoes, and police launched an extensive search operation to locate her. However, later that afternoon, a body was found in nearby bushland.</p> <p>While formal identification is yet to be completed, police believe the body belongs to the missing child. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death is now underway.</p> <p>NSW Police confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner as part of the ongoing inquiry.</p> <p>More details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.</p> <p><em>Images: NSW Police</em></p>

"Miss you every day": Brooke Warne's tribute to Shane

<p>Brooke Warne has shared an emotional tribute to her father Shane on the three-year anniversary since his sudden death. </p> <p>Cricket legend Shane died on March 4th 2022 in Ko Samui, Thailand, at the age of 52 following a suspected heart attack.</p> <p>Brooke, 26, wrote a heart-wrenching post about her dad, saying she misses him every day since his passing. </p> <p>She shared a series of photos with her dad throughout her life, captioning her post, "3 years without you Dad ❤️‍🩹 I miss laughing with you about the little things and there is so much I want to show you🤍."</p> <p>Brooke, who is the eldest of Warne's three children, added: "I know you're always with us, I love you ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 I miss you every day."</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; From sunscreen to essential oils, why some personal care products could be harmful to your health

<div class="theconversation-article-body"><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/asit-kumar-mishra-1458839">Asit Kumar Mishra</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-college-cork-1321">University College Cork</a></em></p> <p>Each time you apply sunscreen to your face, you may inhale somewhere between <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/20/11/5944">10 to 30 milligrams of ethanol</a>, the type of alcohol used in alcoholic drinks. While the ethanol in sunscreen may not give you a buzz, it could make you think about what other chemicals you might be exposed to from personal care products.</p> <p>Products that are applied to the face, like sunscreen, can increase the inhalation of some chemicals by ten times or more than you would inhale from your <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34816489/">home air in the entire day</a>.</p> <p>The levels of ethanol in cosmetics and skincare products may be reasonably safe – although it can still dry out the skin, causing pain, redness and swelling, and <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ethanol-properties-uses-and-incident-management/ethanol-general-information">irritate the eyes</a>, causing tears, burning and stinging – but personal care products such as shampoos, skin creams, deodorants, cosmetics and perfumes contain fragrances and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be inhaled, absorbed through skin or ingested and some are more toxic than others.</p> <p>Unfortunately, manufacturers of personal care products <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11869-015-0327-6">do not have to disclose</a> every fragrance compound used. This is concerning when you consider the potential effects of toxic compounds that <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34816489/">have been detected</a> in the air from personal care products. For example, hair-smoothing products have released formaldehyde, a toxic chemical that can cause <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK597627/">a range of symptoms</a> from dermatitis to low sperm count. Some perfumes and deodorants have generated monoterpenes, chemicals which <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8912113/#sec1-molecules-27-01716">can prove toxic</a> for some users.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cfloNXKeyX8?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></figure> <p>Some of the VOCs found in personal care products <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36976159/">may trigger</a> skin irritation, headaches – and difficulty breathing, which can develop into an asthma attack in some users. The highest or peak concentration of these VOCs are likely to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22406137/">occur within ten minutes</a> of application. But these concentrations may take up to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34816489/">two hours to decrease to background levels</a>, depending on your home’s ventilation.</p> <h2>Natural doesn’t mean risk free</h2> <p>But even if the levels of <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20659630/">VOCs in personal care products</a> are kept <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22406137/">within safe limits</a>, they can still cause discomfort and a variety of health issues, including irritation of the eyes and airways, migraines and asthmatic reactions, in those who’re <a href="https://enveurope.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s12302-020-00311-y">fragrance sensitive</a>. In the UK, <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11869-018-00655-8">27% of the population</a> self reports as fragrance sensitive.</p> <p>It makes sense then that some people attempt to avoid potentially toxic synthetic chemicals in cosmetics by opting for “natural” or “clean” personal care products. But, <a href="https://enveurope.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s12302-020-00311-y">natural does not mean safer</a>.</p> <p>For instance, essential oils are often used in “natural” personal care products as fragrance. Essential oils, though, are a source of terpenes, some of which can be <a href="https://www.lung.org/blog/essential-oils-harmful-or-helpful">toxic if absorbed, inhaled or swallowed</a>.</p> <p>Indoor concentration of terpenes are often at levels where you can smell them but not high enough to cause <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28126407/">eye or respiratory tract irritation</a>. However, the terpenes from essential oils can react with other chemicals, such as ozone from outdoor air, producing <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32162221/">byproducts like formaldehyde, a known carcinogen</a> and <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22250748/">allergens</a>.</p> <h2>Beauty salon safety</h2> <p>Beauty salons can be particularly risky environments for exposure to VOCs. <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/19/7/4176">Studies have found</a> contaminants such as formaldehyde, ammonia and <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/toluene-properties-incident-management-and-toxicology/toluene-toxicological-overview">toluene</a>, a potentially harmful ingredient used in many personal care products, at high levels in salons, putting staff who work there at the highest risk.</p> <p>Formaldehyde levels in some salons have reached <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31321727/">above safety limits</a>. <a href="https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/protection/npi/substances/fact-sheets/methyl-methacrylate#tabs-2">Methyl methacrylate</a>, which can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and potential <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3072694/">respiratory issues</a> has been <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30276513/">detected in the air of nail salons</a>.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ydRklqO01fE?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></figure> <p>These contaminants are not necessarily limited to the places in a salon <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23765035/">where a certain product is being used</a>. Beauty salons with poor ventilation are likely to expose workers and customers to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29494285/">much higher levels of contaminants</a>. Some of the components of personal care products are known, harmful contaminants and carcinogens.</p> <p>Regulations specifically related to ventilation in environments where large volumes of these products are used do reduce exposures. For instance, studies show that after ventilation regulations came into effect in Boston, US in 2011, the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31622145/">air quality inside nail salons improved</a>.</p> <p>When visiting your nail salon or hair stylist, check with them about their ventilation system and other steps they are taking to reduce exposure to VOCs.</p> <p>To limit exposure to potential VOCs at home when using personal care products, try to open windows and use extractor fans in wet rooms. Be especially careful when applying products to the face or when using a high temperature application – <a href="https://occup-med.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12995-018-0213-x">high temperatures can increase emissions</a>.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Search for missing fisherman called off

<p>Police have suspended their search for fisherman Paul Barning who fell overboard his boat during a fishing competition in New South Wales. </p> <p>The 58-year-old was competing in the Game Fishing Association state tournament off the Port Stephens coast on Sunday, when he fell overboard while trying to reel in   large mako shark. </p> <p>Barning was helping his crew when became entangled in fishing wire and was dragged into the water as the shark darted back into the ocean.</p> <p>After a major three-day search, NSW Police have called off the search on Tuesday morning, with his family saying they “have no words” to describe how they are feeling. </p> <p>“Despite the efforts of searchers, the man has not yet been located and the search was suspended at 5pm today and will not resume (on Wednesday),” NSW Police said.</p> <p>The fisherman's wife, Leonie told <em>7News</em> that the family have mixed emotions after the search was suspended, but are extremely grateful to everyone involved. </p> <p>“We just want to send out a huge thank you to everyone involved in the search and rescue, we were informed every step of the way,” she said.</p> <p>“And a huge thank you to the whole fishing community. We have been overwhelmed with kindness from everyone.</p> <p>“Our family meant everything to Paul, he would never hesitate to do the same for anyone else.”</p> <p>It is understood the fisherman was not wearing a life jacket when he went overboard. </p> <p>Barning, a father-of-three, was an experienced game fisherman and the secretary and past president of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club.</p> <p>A <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-barning-family" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe </a>has since been launched by NSW Game and Fishing Association president Steve Lamond, to assist Barning's family during this difficult time, with over $148,000 raised. </p> <p>“We are raising funds to assist the family through this tragic time so they can focus on processing their grief," the fundraiser read. </p> <p>“Anything you could give to assist will be greatly appreciated.”</p> <p><em>Image: NSW Marine Rescue/ Facebook</em></p>

Barry Humphries' personal collection fetches millions at auction

<p>A collection of Barry Humphries' personal items has fetched $9 million at a London auction. </p> <p>Just one pair of Barry Humphries’ Dame Edna Everage glasses sold for more than 25 times their pre-sale high estimate, with the yellow-lacquered Possum spectacles fetching a whopping £37,800 ($75,185 AUD).</p> <p>His personal collection totalled £4,627,224 ($9.2 million AUD) at auction, including buyer’s premium, according to Christie’s auction house, which welcomed bidders from 41 countries to the sale.</p> <p>The top price of the sale was lot 42, Charles Conder’s painting Sand dunes, Ambleteuse, which sold for £239,400 ($476,170 AUD).</p> <p>Among the star’s costumes up for sale was a scarlet chiffon evening gown, worn by Humphries as Dame Edna when he surprised the then Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall in the royal box at the Royal Variety Show in 2013, which sold for £21,420, or $42,604 AUD.</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr" lang="en"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SpotlightSaturday?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#SpotlightSaturday</a> Christie’s is delighted to present six lots in Barry Humphries: The Personal Collection sale being sold to benefit the Royal Variety Charity (Registered Charity No.206451) on 13 February. <p>As the desperate search for Tayla Spies, a young mum who has been <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/travel/travel-trouble/desperate-search-for-missing-young-mother" target="_blank" rel="noopener">missing in western Queensland</a> for almost two weeks continues, police have released CCTV footage in hopes of helping locate her.</p> <p>The 29-year-old mum was last seen leaving  a hotel in Dalby about 8am on Sunday February 2.</p> <p>“We have grave concerns about the health and safety of Tayla,” Detective Chief Inspector Garry Watts told the <em>ABC</em>.</p> <p>“She had a birthday just recently, she didn’t make any contact with family, which is really out of character.”</p> <p>Tayla turned 29 just six days after she went missing. </p> <p>CCTV footage showed her carrying a large bag into her her white Toyota HiLux, before she travelled towards Surat, a small town in the state's south west. </p> <p>Her vehicle, with the plate number 559 GJ7 and a distinctive black bumper bar and blacked-out wheels, was seen at the intersection of Burrowes Street and Cordelia Street in Surat at 11.10am.</p> <p>Tayla was last seen wearing a fluorescent pink long sleeve shirt and light-coloured shorts, according to police.</p> <p>However, in a social media update, her sister Rebecca said she might now be wearing different clothes. </p> <p>“She did end up changing into a white shirt with purple writing on it and a Mimco shoulder bag in the afternoon on Sunday,” she wrote.</p> <p>Her family have also appealed to the public for any information on the missing mum. </p> <p>“Please, if anyone has seen Tayla or her car, report it asap! <p>A young mother has disappeared in rural Queensland, prompting her worried friends and family to issue a public plea for information. </p> <p>Tayla Spies, 28, was travelling between Surat and Roma, in the state’s southwest, when she went missing on Sunday.</p> <p>She was last seen about 11:30am about 30km north of Surat in a white Toyota Hilux dual cab ute.</p> <p>Tayla was wearing a white shirt emblazoned with purple writing and also had a white Mimco shoulder bag when she was last seen.</p> <p>She is known to frequent areas such as Roma, Surat, Dalby, Toowoomba, Condamine, Meandarra, and Cecil Plains.</p> <p>Worried family and friends have pleaded for help from the public to locate her.</p> <p>“If anyone of my friends have seen my sister or heard from her in the past week, please get in touch with the Roma Police or myself,’ her sister Rebecca wrote on social media.</p> <p>“Or even if you see a Toyota Hilux that matches this description around the area."</p> <p>“Every little bit of information will help us.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Instagram </em></p>

"We'll miss him terribly": Alex Cullen steps down from Today

<p>Alex Cullen is "stepping down permanently" from <em>Today</em> after accepting a huge cash prize from billionaire Adrian Portelli. </p> <p>After Cullen referred to Portelli as "McLaren Man" on the Channel Nine morning show and pocketed $50,000 for using Portelli's preferred moniker, Cullen disappeared from screens for several days for breaching the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) Journalist Code of Ethics.</p> <p>Despite handing the money back, which has since been <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/money-banking/billionaire-adrian-portelli-responds-to-50k-mclaren-man-controversy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">donated to charity</a>, Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo confirmed on Friday morning that Cullen would not be retuning to the show. </p> <p>“As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week,” Stefanovic said.</p> <p>“There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed that he would finish with the network."</p> <p>“Alex has, of course, been part of the <em>Today</em> family for five years now, he’s always ready with a smile and a laugh and without hesitation speaking for all of us here, we can say that we are going to miss him terribly, that’s for sure."</p> <p>“Alex is a terrific fella, what you see is what you get and he has been a great mate to all of us over these years and we wish Alex, his wife Bonnie and his beautiful kids all the very best for the future.”</p> <p>The scandal began when Portelli put a call out on social media, challenging journalists to refer to him publicly as "McLaren Man" instead of his common nickname "Lambo Guy", which he earned after showing up to <em>The Block</em> auctions in a bright yellow Lamborghini. </p> <p>Portelli said whoever completed the challenge would earn a hefty cash prize, and after Cullen used the new nickname live on <em>Today</em> just hours later, Portelli shared a screenshot of a bank transfer to Cullen for a whopping $50,000. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Today </em></p>

"Forever missed": Celine Dion's emotional tribute to late husband

Karl Stefanovic's missing daughter sparks major police search

<p>Karl Stefanovic's four-year-old daughter has been found after she went missing for one stressful hour from his Sunshine Beach home. </p> <p>On Wednesday afternoon, Stefanovic was spotted chatting with police officers outside his Noosa residence, after young Harper was nowhere to be seen. </p> <p>She was missing for over an hour with all family members frantically looking in the surrounding beach and bushland, with local Surf Life Savers also assisting in the search.</p> <p>According to the <em>Daily Mail</em>, Stefanovic even got on his Vespa scooter and darted around town searching for Harper and asking locals if they had seen her. </p> <p>“Harper went missing for a short time and we feared the absolute worst because no one could find her,” Stefanovic told The <em><a href="https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/sydney-confidential/police-helicopter-called-in-after-karl-stefanovics-daughter-vanishes/news-story/c57007a819e9fadc15bb8e121b46ea41" target="_self" data-tgev="event119" data-tgev-container="bodylink" data-tgev-order="c57007a819e9fadc15bb8e121b46ea41" data-tgev-label="entertainment" data-tgev-metric="ev">Daily Telegraph</a></em>.</p> <p>“I called the police because she couldn’t be found inside or around the house and our priority is her safety.”</p> <p>However Harper was found inside Stefanovic’s house, “curled up asleep underneath a chair where no one could possibly have hidden,” he said.</p> <p>Stefanovic thanked Noosa Heads police and the local community for their swift efforts in locating Harper.</p> <p>“We are so grateful for the support we received from Noosa Heads police department and the community around us. They all handled our distress and the outcome incredibly professionally.”</p> <p>While the situation “resolved itself quickly”, Stefanovic told the publication it had been his “worst nightmare”.</p> <p>As for the four year-old, whose only worry was if she would be in trouble with Santa just seven sleeps from Christmas Day, Stefanovic said, “(We’ve) have promised Harper Santa won’t find out. Harold Holt is a meme today, but when the prime minister went missing in December 1967, it was no laughing matter

<div class="theconversation-article-body"><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/joshua-black-729708">Joshua Black</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/australian-national-university-877">Australian National University</a></em></p> <p>At some point, Australians stopped grieving Harold Holt’s death and many started to laugh about it instead. The sudden disappearance of a prime minister at a Victorian beach in December 1967 has furnished many wisecracks and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/mapporncirclejerk/comments/ogof5t/map_of_all_the_countries_where_the_prime_minister/?rdt=40282">memes</a>. Former Cronulla Sharks coach Jack Gibson <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20161104143853/http:/www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/teams/sharks/harold-holts-grandson-will-cheer-for-cronulla-in-sundays-nrl-grand-final/news-story/58e542e3298dd2ebb1fd84c199588ec2">famously said</a> that waiting for the team to win was like “leaving a porch light on for Harold Holt”.</p> <p>The Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Pool in Malvern, commemorated in his honour in 1969, attracts its fair share of mirth. So do the conspiracy theories, deeply unserious as they are, of “double agent” Holt’s abduction by a Chinese submarine. A few years ago, Holt’s grandson <a href="https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/holt-submarine-theory-madness-grandson/uwbjrewla">pointed out</a> that Cheviot beach was “too shallow for such a vessel”, and the late prime minister “wasn’t a fan of Chinese cuisine” anyway.</p> <p>For all its comic potential today, Harold Holt’s disappearance was no joke at the time.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dvdgSKgD86Q?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></figure> <h2>Rough waters</h2> <p>Holt had not enjoyed 1967. The war in Vietnam – effectively his war – was increasingly divisive. Old questions about the HMAS Voyager <a href="https://www.robertmenziesinstitute.org.au/on-this-day/voyager-disaster/">disaster</a> in 1964 had caused political mayhem for him in parliament. Another <a href="https://theconversation.com/storm-clouds-ahead-scandals-that-have-rocked-australian-politics-216825">scandal</a>, this one about the misuse of VIP flights, had damaged his standing and that of his government.</p> <p>In the final weeks of Holt’s life, he had faced off against his deputy prime minister, Country Party leader John McEwen, over Australia’s decision not to devalue the dollar in line with Britain’s <a href="https://pmtranscripts.pmc.gov.au/sites/default/files/original/00001721.pdf">devaluation of sterling</a>. The exchange rate affected primary and secondary producers and was politically controversial enough to almost split the Liberal-Country Party Coalition.</p> <p>There were personal challenges, too. Holt’s brother Cliff died in March, and by December the prime minister was suffering with shoulder and back pains. On Saturday December 16, the front page of The Australian reported that Holt’s doctor had advised him to “swim less”.</p> <p>The prime minister was a man who thrived on physical risk and loved the water, so he ignored the advice. On Sunday morning he and a few companions, including lover Marjorie Gillespie and friend Alan Stewart, went to Portsea to catch a glimpse of the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/jul/03/shoestring-sailor-alec-rose-round-the-world-sailing">world-famous sailor</a> Alec Rose’s yacht.</p> <p>They then went to Cheviot beach, where an overheating and reckless Holt insisted on swimming. As the press reported the next morning, there were “strong currents and a heavy surf”. Holt looked to be caught in a rip. He dived and never resurfaced.</p> <h2>Everywhere and nowhere</h2> <p>Stewart and Gillespie quickly raised the alarm. What followed, according to Holt’s <a href="https://catalogue.nla.gov.au/catalog/3428288">biographer</a> Tom Frame, was “one of the largest search operations in Australian history”. The Victorian Police, the Royal Australian Air Force and Navy Search and Rescue were all involved, providing several teams of professional divers, though the surf was too dangerous for them to work in that night. Airlines TAA and Ansett both contributed an aircraft each to the search mission.</p> <p>News of the “missing VIP” quickly spread, and media outlets began breaking the story in the later afternoon. The prime minister’s wife Zara and press secretary Tony Eggleton were quickly flown from Canberra to Melbourne.</p> <p>After several hours of dangerous operations, the search was suspended for the night, to be resumed at 4.54am the following morning. At dawn, there were 50 divers on hand and 340 people involved throughout the day.</p> <p>Large headlines such as “PRIME MINISTER MISSING” and “MR HOLT BELIEVED DEAD” dominated the newspapers on Monday morning. Topographical pictures and maps with arrows and labels (“Mr Holt Disappeared Here”) were printed in most of the metropolitan broadsheets.</p> <p>There was a constant stream of radio and television <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MST9Oz2MDfs">interviews with rescue personnel</a>, and no fewer than nine press conferences at Portsea in the hours and days after the disappearance. Even Marjorie was prevailed upon to speak <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MST9Oz2MDfs">on camera</a>. The journalists wanted to know whether Holt had been doing an “overarm stroke” or “the breaststroke” before he vanished.</p> <p>Given the circumstances, the media were mostly well behaved. Reporters kept a respectful distance from Zara as she landed in Melbourne, and they “were fantastic” in their <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/national/profound-and-personal-a-witness-to-political-trauma-and-farce-20230524-p5day9.html">treatment of</a> Eggleton, who had to repeatedly put on a brave face for the cameras despite his obvious grief.</p> <p>The hunt for Holt’s body ran through to early January 1968. Nearby sharks were captured and dissected in case they had secrets to reveal. Several weeks later, <a href="https://catalogue.nla.gov.au/catalog/8669803">another biographer</a> notes, fisherman picked up “a thigh bone” and additional “leg bone”, but these were never identified. The live reporting on the search was grim and macabre, the lack of a body morbidly fascinating. Holt’s body was everywhere and nowhere all at once.</p> <h2>Saying goodbye</h2> <p>A blanket of respect fell where only recently there had been passionate criticism. The obituaries described the lost PM as “essentially a ‘nice bloke’”. The Courier-Mail said Holt was “the most courteous, personable, likeable and accessible Prime Minister this country has ever had”. There were tender tributes from former colleagues like Sir Robert Menzies and opponents including the new Labor leader Gough Whitlam. International tributes came thick and fast.</p> <p>Holt’s memorial service, just days before Christmas, led to “the largest influx of overseas heads of state in Australian history”. There were several influential Asian leaders present. A tearful US President Lyndon Johnson flew in to mourn the loss of his “cherished friend” and commiserate with Zara before breaking off for urgent discussions about Vietnam.</p> <p>Dignitaries, journalists and a handful of ticketed members of the public attended St Paul’s cathedral in Melbourne and a further 20,000 mourners lined the streets outside. Four television cameras were on hand to capture the occasion, which was broadcast live across Australia’s TV and radio networks.</p> <p>For most, it was a solemn occasion. Brisbane’s Archbishop Philip Strong <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fudKQx12iIo">eulogised</a> that Holt’s loss would be “impossible to calculate”. But <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fudKQx12iIo">according to</a> Don Chipp, a low-ranking Liberal minister, the minds of federal politicians were elsewhere.</p> <h2>‘I want to be prime minister’</h2> <p>Australia’s Constitution offers no advice about what to do when the prime minister goes swimming and doesn’t come back. In fact, it says nothing about the job of prime minister whatsoever. Holt’s death, therefore, was followed by an unseemly power struggle.</p> <p>The first problem was one for Governor-General Lord Casey: when should an acting prime minister be appointed? After two leaderless days, Casey called on McEwen as deputy prime minister to lead an interim government. McEwen accepted, promising to resign as soon as the Liberal Party chose its new leader.</p> <p>The Liberal deputy leader and treasurer, Billy McMahon, was unimpressed with this. He and McEwen had been at constant loggerheads in recent times and they deeply detested one another. It only got worse from there. In a tense meeting, McEwen vetoed McMahon’s candidacy entirely. He explained to the press afterwards:</p> <blockquote> <p>I have told Mr McMahon that neither I nor my Country Party colleagues would be prepared to serve under him as Prime Minister.</p> </blockquote> <p>It was no empty threat, and the Liberal Party quickly moved on (though McMahon didn’t). Some Liberal operatives thought it best to keep McEwen in charge, whereas others began mobilising to elevate someone from a group of ministers who, The Bulletin thought, had been “reinforcing each other in their triviality” of late.</p> <p>In the end, there were four candidates. Labour and National Service minister Leslie Bury was an early favourite. Immigration minister Billy Snedden threw his hat in the ring and was eliminated early, though he would be a future contender. Allen Fairhall, the much-liked defence minister, was thought a chance but chose not to stand. The Bulletin said his health wasn’t up to it, and he wasn’t even sure he wanted to be a politician anyway.</p> <p>The two strongest contenders were the external affairs minister, the respected Paul Hasluck, and the government’s senate leader, the gregarious John Gorton. The latter had run a highly visible campaign, and the eminent journalist Alan Reid later <a href="https://catalogue.nla.gov.au/catalog/1937415">wrote that</a> he was different from the late Holt: Gorton “had the air of being prepared to be rough, tough and nasty if he had to be”.</p> <p>On January 9, decision day for the Liberals, The Sydney Morning Herald <a href="https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=lL5f5cZgq8MC&amp;dat=19680109&amp;printsec=frontpage&amp;hl=en">claimed</a> Gorton’s backers had “lost a little of their strong confidence”. He needn’t have worried. After a motion of condolence from Holt, a dignified speech from McMahon and two ballots, Gorton became prime minister.</p> <p>Gorton quickly assumed the prime ministership and won a by-election to represent Holt’s electorate in the House of Representatives.</p> <p>In a matter of weeks, our politics had been completely transformed. Some said it was a characteristically Australian thing to lose our prime minister in the surf. For us today, it is national folklore. Police ramp-up desperate search for missing 8 year old

<p>NSW Police have ramped up their search for missing eight-year-old Molly Noonan-Medley, who was reported missing seven weeks ago. </p> <p>The child was last seen in Woonona, south of Sydney, about 11am on October 31st. </p> <p>Police believe Molly is with an adult who is known to her. </p> <p>Officers attached to Wollongong Police District were notified on November 1st of Molly's disappearance and immediately commenced an investigation to locate the child, after attempts to contact the adult were unsuccessful.</p> <p>In a statement on Monday, NSW Police said they were re-appealing to the public for any information to help find the child, almost seven weeks after Molly was first reported missing.</p> <p>Molly is described as caucasian appearance, 120cm, thin build, blue eyes and blond/brown hair.</p> <p>The woman believed to be in company with Molly is known to frequent the Woonona, Wollongong and Huskisson areas, a NSW Police spokesperson said.</p> <p>Anyone with information into her whereabouts is urged to contact Wollongong Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.</p> <p><em>Image credits: NSW Police</em></p>

Sad end in search for missing rugby hero

<p>Police have made a devastating discovery just metres away from where England rugby hero Tom Voyce vanished in rising flood waters. </p> <p>Concerns were raised for the 43-year-old ex-wing on Sunday after he failed to return home after being out with friends on Saturday.</p> <p>Authorities believe he was trying to drive across a flooded river, as his Toyota Hilux was found downstream. </p> <p>A major search operation was launched involving Northumbria Police, drones, the police helicopter, coastguard officers and the North of Tyne and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Teams, with family and friends of the much-loved former rugby player also joining the search.</p> <p>Northumbria Police said they faced “very challenging conditions, not least due to the river flow and the level being significantly heightened after the exceptionally heavy rain experienced over the weekend”.</p> <p>On Thursday, police said they had found a body during their search. </p> <p>The force said formal identification was yet to take place but Voyce’s next of kin have been notified and were being supported by specialist officers.</p> <p>Chief Superintendent Helena Barron, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an extremely sad development and our thoughts very much continue to be with Tom’s loved ones.</p> <p>“I would like to thank all of our officers, partners and volunteers for their assistance throughout the searches which have been conducted in very challenging circumstances.</p> <p>“We would continue to ask that people respect the family’s privacy at this time.”</p> <p>During his stellar rugby career, Voyce won nine caps for England and spent six years at Wasps, from 2003 to 2009, helping them win European and domestic titles after moving there from Bath and then leaving to join Gloucester in 2009.</p> <p>He made 220 Premiership appearances before retiring in May 2013.</p> <p><em>Image credits: Back Page Images/Shutterstock Editorial </em></p>

Remains of missing couple found 44 years later

<p>US police believe they have located the remains of Charles and Catherine Romer, a couple who went missing more than four decades ago. </p> <p>Human remains were found submerged in a Georgia pond, inside a Lincoln Continental, a vehicle similar to the one that belonged to the New York couple who disappeared in 1980. </p> <p>“The vehicle is similar to the description of a vehicle that Charles and Catherine Romer were believed to be driving when reported missing in April 1980,” police said.</p> <p>A human bone was found in the submerged vehicle that was located in a pond between the Royal Inn Hotel and Interstate 95, police said.</p> <p>The car was found by a sonar team from Florida, and is being drained to determine if there are additional remains. </p> <p>The Glynn County Police department is collaborating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. </p> <p>Retired oil executive Charles Romer, 73, and his wife Catherine, 75, vanished while travelling home from Miami Beach, Florida in 1980. </p> <p>At the time, police expressed concerns about potential foul play as Catherine was wearing about $81,000 worth of jewellery.</p> <p><em>Image: Facebook</em></p> <p> </p>

Rebel Wilson reveals personal tragedy

<p>Rebel Wilson has been struck with personal tragedy, just days after celebrating Thanksgiving with her growing family. </p> <p>On Saturday, the actress took to Instagram to share that her beloved grandfather has died aged 97. </p> <p>"RIP Poppy – 97 years young. The best grandpa!" she wrote on her Instagram story over the weeked, alongside a photo of herself with her beloved Poppy. </p> <p>It comes just days after the <em>Pitch Perfect</em> star shared a glimpse at her family Thanksgiving with wife Ramona and two-year-old daughter Royce in an Instagram post. </p> <p> "Happy Thanksgiving everyone 🥰 so grateful and lucky to have such an awesome family! Sixteen people missing after tourist yacht sinks

<p>Egyptian officials have confirmed sixteen people are missing after a tourist yacht capsized in the Red Sea after being struck by strong waves. </p> <p>The governor of the Red Sea region, Amr Hanafy, said rescuers saved 28 people from the sinking vessel south of the coastal town of Marsa Alam, and some were airlifted to receive medical treatment.</p> <p>The Egyptian Navy warship El Fateh and military aircraft have intensified their efforts to locate the missing, with rescue teams working around the clock.</p> <p>A total of 44 people were on board the yacht, including 13 Egyptians, and 31 foreign nationals from the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, China, Slovakia, Spain and Ireland.</p> <p>The governor confirmed that 16 people are still missing, including four Egyptians and 12 foreign tourists. </p> <p>The boat had no technical issues, while passengers onboard said the reason behind the sinking was a strong wave that hit the boat, causing it to capsize. </p> <p>The governorate received a report shortly before dawn on Monday of a distress call made from the yacht, which had left Marsa Alam for a five-day journey.</p> <p>The Egyptian Meteorological Authority on Saturday warned about turbulence and high waves on the Red Sea and advised against maritime activity for Sunday and Monday.</p> <p>The boat is the second vessel to sink in the area this year. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Facebook</em></p>

"I miss her daily": Fergie opens up on friendship with Diana

<p>As the Duchess of York wraps up her visit Down Under, she has shared some of her most cherished memories in an interview with <em>9Honey</em>.</p> <p>Following a busy schedule of meet and greets as part of her book tour, Sarah Ferguson opened up on her friendship with the late Princess Diana, who, like the duchess, is a beloved member of the royal family.</p> <p>"The thing about Diana was that she had the best sense of humour of any single person I know – that's quite a big thing, so it's a really big hole because she'd get my sense of humour," the duchess told the publication.</p> <p>"It's really, really hard to really make me cackle with laughter like she used to.</p> <p>"And so, yes, I miss her daily, and I think in the '80s it was just her and I, wasn't it?"</p> <p>The two women were brought together by their marriages to then Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, and the royal affectionately recalled their strong bond.</p> <p>"There isn't anybody else to know, really, what we know because there was no social media and it was just newspaper headlines.</p> <p>"I was so proud of her, what she achieved, and she would be SO proud of her grandchildren.</p> <p>"Oh, my goodness.
