Big change for new buses after Hunter Valley crash

<p>Australian buses and coaches fitted with seatbelts will soon be required to have announcements reminding people to buckle up, following the tragic Hunter Valley bus crash that killed 10 people almost two years ago. </p> <p>On Tuesday, the federal government announced that the new rule will require these vehicles to include visual and audio alerts reminding passengers to buckle up, similar to those on airplanes. </p> <p>“Travelling by bus is one of the safest forms of transport in Australia, and these new audible and visual signage requirements will ensure this continues to be the case,” federal assistant Regional Development Minister Anthony Chisholm said.</p> <p>The government also announced it had closed a loophole where some buses with seats under 1m high were exempted from requiring seatbelts. </p> <p>Under the regulations, all new bus and coach models must comply by November 1, 2026, while existing models will need to make the changes by November 1, 2027.</p> <p>“These safety outcomes further improve what is generally regarded as the most stringent seatbelt rules for buses in the world,” Bus industry confederation chair Tony Hopkins said. </p> <p>“With seat belt usage currently as low as 7 per cent on some services, this provides a simple but powerful message that reminds bus passengers to fasten a seat belt.</p> <p>“After all, if a seat belt is provided in a bus it must be worn by law.”</p> <p><em>Image: </em><em>Mino Surkala / Shutterstock.com</em></p>

Nine reporter stood down over controversial $50k gift

<p><em>Today</em> show presenter Alex Cullen has been stood down after accepting a huge cash prize from <em>The Block</em> billionaire Adrian Portelli. </p> <p>Portelli, known for his attention-grabbing <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/finance/money-banking/the-block-billionaire-s-generous-christmas-stunt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">antics</a>, recently announced that he was sick of his nickname "Lambo guy", which had stuck after turned up to a 2022 auction of <em>The Block</em> in a yellow Lamborghini. </p> <p>The billionaire put a call out to the media saying that he would give $50,000 to the first journalist or presenter to publicly call him by his new preferred nickname "McLaren Man." </p> <p>Cullen dropped the nickname on-air during a <em>Today</em> show cross from the Australian Open on Friday morning, even sharing footage of the moment on his Instagram account afterwards, tagging Portelli in the post.</p> <p>“We have a winner! Well played sir,” Portelli wrote in an Instagram story, sharing a screenshot of a bank transfer. </p> <p>Cullen's employer, Channel Nine, said that the presenter had agreed to step down on Saturday while the network looked into the payment. </p> <p>“Nine is taking this matter extremely seriously,” a Nine spokesperson told <em>news.com.au</em>. </p> <p>“Appropriate action has been promptly taken, including arranging for the funds to be returned.</p> <p>“While we review the circumstances in which this occurred, Alex has agreed to stand down.”</p> <p>Accepting cash, gifts or benefits to undermine journalistic independence, and inappropriately using a journalistic position for personal gain, are both breaches to the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) Journalist Code of Ethics.</p> <p>It was created by journalists in 1944 to promote basic values for the Australian media industry.</p> <p>As news of the controversy spread, Portelli took to Instagram to speak out against journalists who still refer to him as "Lambo guy". </p> <p>“I wanted to show the media that I do have a large platform as well, and I’m not afraid to use it. New road initiatives rolling out this year

<p>Several new road initiatives are set to be introduced this year, as government plans to trial out new technology in 2025. </p> <p>From wireless solar powered signs advising motorists of new hazards to in-road pods that collect data on traffic volume and speed, these initiatives will be trialled on regional roads as part of the NSW government's $5 million Smarter Highways program. </p> <p>Each trial will feature technology that detects an issue on the road, which will activate the Smarter Highway Activated Vehicle and Environment Systems (SHAVES) to warn drivers about hazards. </p> <p>The system will have self-adaptive electronic signage which will be able to predict events and advise motorist, including bad weather and animals approaching the road. </p> <p>The signs will communicate with each other using localised radio communications. </p> <p>The NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison said that the introduction of the technology aims to "reduce risky driving actions such as not driving to the conditions". </p> <p>They are also trialling a new in-road 4G traffic counter device which can detect and provide info on vehicle volumes, speeds,  road temperatures and system health among other information in real time. </p> <p>It is being trialled on the Great Western Highway at Kelso and the Newell Highway at Dubbo, with its use particularly important for the start and end of holidays and during special events. </p> <p>“The more information you can give to the motoring public about an incident early, the better,” NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury told <em>Yahoo News</em>.</p> <p>“We’ve always said more needs to be done to alert people earlier when there is an incident. It gives them the time they need to make a judgement on whether they need to proceed along a different route, or delay their journey”.</p> <p>The NRMA supports the trials and introduction of the new technology, with Khoury saying: "the more we are relying on new technology to make our roads more efficient and safer, the better the outcome for the public.”</p> <p><strong>Here are the five Smarter Highways trials this year </strong></p> <p><strong>1.  Smarter Highway Activated Vehicle and Environmental Systems (SHAVES)</strong>- Self-adaptive electronic signage able to predict events and advise motorists of hazards.</p> <p><strong>2. Road Pod Vehicle Magnetometer</strong> - 4G powered devices in the road to provide data on traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and other issues. </p> <p><strong>3. Rural Intersection Activated Warning System</strong> - Road sensors advise motorists through Variable Speed Limit signs of a slow and large vehicle entering from a side road.</p> <p><strong>4. Improved local area traffic management during major disruptions</strong></p> <p><strong>5. Youngest Bali Nine member arrested weeks after return home

<p>Matthew Norman, the youngest Bali Nine member has been arrested in NSW,  just weeks after returning home from Indonesian jail. </p> <p>The 38-year-old spent 19 years behind bars in Indonesia, and was arrested in NSW on an outstanding warrant at 10.30am on Monday, according NSW Police. </p> <p>Norman was taken to Waverley Police Station and refused bail to appear before Waverley Local Court, who released him on bail following his court hearing. He will remain free from custody until his next court hearing on February 25.</p> <p>The warrant was in relation to the 2005 theft of a white Ford Laser hatchback, which Norman allegedly drove around for less than an hour before he was stopped by police, according to the<em> Daily Telegraph</em>.</p> <p>Norman faced court over the car theft and then left the country while on bail, the publication reported. </p> <p>It was the same year that he attempted to smuggle 334g of heroin into Bali in a suitcase while he was just 18 years old. </p> <p>He had arrived back in Australia alongside other surviving Bali Nine members Scott Rush, Martin Stephens, Si Yi Chen and Michael Czugaj, on December 20, 2024. </p> <p><em>Image: Seven</em></p>

Wayne Carey welcomes a new baby boy at 53

<p>Wayne Carey has welcomed a new baby at the age of 53. </p> <p>The AFL legend and his partner Jessica Paulke, 33, have welcomed a baby boy, with the <em>Herald Sun</em> confirming the happy news. </p> <p>The couple, who dated for a number of years and already share five-year-old son Carter, announced they were expecting a new addition to their family back in August.</p> <p>"We are both incredibly ecstatic, as is Carter who is looking forward to having a sibling in January," Wayne told the Herald Sun at the time.</p> <p>"Mum is healthy and happy," the former footballer added of his model partner.</p> <p>Wayne and Jessica were first spotted together at the Australian Open in 2018, and welcomed son Carter just one year later. </p> <p>The couple split for a brief period in 2023, when Wayne went public with a new relationship. </p> <p>In August, Wayne and Jessica reunited and soon after came the pregnancy announcement of their new baby. </p> <p>The news of Carey's new baby comes after he was plagued with more scandals in 2024, after he made headlines at the end of the year for being excluded from a promotional video for his former North Melbourne team. </p> <p>It seems his controversial career, both on and off the field, led to him being left out from the video, with Carey responding to the snub by saying he won't "live with toxic shame".</p> <p>Carey also said the infamous incident where he was alleged to have glassed his then partner Neilson was incorrect and “ludicrous”.</p> <p>Image credits: Getty Images / Facebook</p>

<p>After months of speculation that Hugh Jackman and his <em>The Music Man </em>co-star, Sutton Foster, were together, the pair finally went public with their romance last week where they were spotted holding hands after an intimate dinner. </p> <p>Now, a little over a year after  Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness announced their split, a source close to Furness has revealed her surprising reaction to the news. </p> <p>“Deborra-Lee feels a sense of relief to be honest with you,” the source told <em>Daily Mail</em>.</p> <p>The source added that the 68-year-old had her suspicions and was repeatedly told the pair were just friends. </p> <p>“She has been plagued with suspicions. She was told it wasn’t true, and that they were nothing more than close friends who worked together.</p> <p>“But something in her heart told her that this was not true.</p> <p>“She trusted her intuition and her intuition was right. Man dies and several others injured after severe storms lash NSW

<p>A man has tragically died after severe thunderstorms pummelled New South Wales on Wednesday night. </p> <p>The extreme storm system swept through the eastern part of the state on Wednesday evening, leaving several people injured and thousands without power. </p> <p>In the central west town of Cowra, 300km west of Sydney, a man in his 80s was killed when a tree fell on his car as the region experienced wind gust speeds of 107km/h at the time, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.</p> <p>Police were in attendance at the scene and had launched an investigation into the incident, while the man has yet to be formally identified.</p> <p>Four campers have also been injured when their shelters were destroyed in high winds at Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region in the state’s southwest.</p> <p>The storm also triggered major power outages with Endeavour Energy reporting more than 47,000 impacted customers across the Blue Mountains, Western Sydney, Illawarra and the South Coast at 10pm, and Ausgrid reporting more than 62,000.</p> <p>On Thursday morning, the SES said they had received 2250 calls and responded to more than 1800 incidents in the last 24 hours, with the majority of the incidents were for fallen trees, powerlines and damaged properties.</p> <p>Scattered showers and severe storms are expected to continue on Thursday, particularly in the east and north east of the state. </p> <p><em>Image credits: 9News</em></p>

Jess Rowe explains Peter Overton's absence from the news desk

<p>Jess Rowe has revealed why her husband Peter Overton has been absent from the <em>9News</em> desk, sharing that he had to undergo surgery. </p> <p>The podcast host took to Instagram to inform her followers that Overton will be back presenting the news eventually, but has been recovering at home after having surgery during the Christmas break.</p> <p>“As you know Pete doesn’t do Insta – and he wanted me to share some news with you," she began.</p> <p>"He’s off work for a little longer at the moment after an ENT surgeon discovered a polyp on one of his vocal cords which explains his very raspy voice over the holidays."</p> <p>“He was operated on and part of his recovery is no talking for now (which is a HUGE challenge for him!!)”</p> <p>She added, “Hopefully he’ll be back to <em>9News</em> soonish. "New beginnings": Lisa Wilkinson's rumoured comeback

<p>Lisa Wilkinson reportedly has plans to launch a new career in 2025, over two years after her exit from<em> The Project</em> in November 2022.</p> <p>A close friend of the veteran TV presenter reportedly told<em> Woman's Day </em>magazine that Wilkinson is looking into the world of politics. </p> <p>"She's 65 and ready for a new challenge - to try her hand in politics. She's always had a keen interest in being on the front foot to her local community," the close friend reportedly said. </p> <p>"She may well just run for a seat in the upcoming election."</p> <p>A few days into the new year, Wilkinson shared a cryptic post to social media revealing that she was ready for "new beginnings". </p> <p>This comes after her contract with Channel 10 finally lapsed on New Year's eve. Rumours suggest that Wilkinson was on a salary of $1.7 million per year, and up until that point was still receiving a monthly cheque from the company. </p> <p>In the two years since vanishing from Aussie screens, Wilkinson has been trying to slowly build back her public image with quiet appearances at a handful of red carpet events.</p> <p>Her recent attendance at the launch of wellness brand Vegamour's new GRO+ Advanced Hair Serum at Bondi Icebergs, is Wilkinson's latest effort to "ease back into the Sydney social scene"  according to the <em>Daily Telegraph</em>.</p> <p>It follows rumours that the former TV host was keen to get back to delivering more "blockbuster interviews" in the New Year, according to a source in the<em> Weekend Australian.</em> </p> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

New hope for prostate cancer patients this Christmas

<p dir="ltr">For David Southward, Christmas is a time for family, gratitude, and hope. Diagnosed two years ago with advanced prostate cancer, he has been navigating his battle with hormone therapy and a determination to stay active.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I’ve found regular exercise helps me stay positive,” he says. “But at the end of the day, we need better treatments. Research gives men like me a chance to spend more time with our loved ones.”</p> <p dir="ltr">This year, the <a href="https://giving.pcfa.org.au/">Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia</a> (PCFA) is making that wish a reality through its Christmas Appeal, focused on advancing targeted nuclear medicines. </p> <p dir="ltr">These therapies offer new hope for men like David by addressing metastatic prostate cancer, the most aggressive form of the disease.</p> <p dir="ltr">Australia is leading the development of nuclear medicines that target cancer cells with precision. However, PCFA Chief Executive Anne Savage stresses the need for more research to understand why patients respond differently to these therapies.</p> <p dir="ltr">“For every 10 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, three will develop an aggressive form,” Savage says. “We’re working to help researchers predict which patients will become resistant to radioligand therapy, so they can win the battle and live longer.”</p> <p dir="ltr">One of PCFA's key projects is led by Dr. Kevin Koo, focusing on Alpha Therapy, an emerging treatment for metastatic prostate cancer. This innovative approach aims to shrink tumors and harness the immune system to eradicate cancer cells.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Targeted Alpha Therapy is a promising treatment for metastatic prostate cancer,” says Dr. Koo. “Our challenge is to identify men at risk of developing metastasis, sparing others from unnecessary treatments.”</p> <p dir="ltr">While Alpha Therapies show great potential, researchers still lack a full understanding of their mechanisms.</p> <p dir="ltr">“With most radioligand therapies, tumors shrink on scans, but we don’t fully understand the biological pathways driving this,” Dr. Koo notes. “This becomes problematic when patients develop resistance.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Dr. Koo’s team is collecting blood samples to identify biomarkers that predict resistance.</p> <p dir="ltr"> “In three to five years, we could significantly improve how we tailor therapies to individual patients,” he says.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Christmas Appeal is part of PCFA’s broader mission to lift survival rates and improve quality of life for prostate cancer patients. Former Nine CEO's new major role

<p>Former Nine Entertainment chief executive Hugh Marks has been appointed the new managing director of the ABC. </p> <p>Marks, who was the chief executive of Nine Entertainment from 2015 to 2020 will replace the ABC's current managing director, David Anderson,  who resigned from the position a year after being re-appointed for a second five-year term.</p> <p>Following an “extensive” domestic and international search for a replacement, the ABC board voted unanimously for Marks to take on the role, with  ABC chair Kim Williams describing Marks as "an unusually good fit" for the national broadcaster.</p> <p>He added that Marks’ experience was “critical” for the broadcaster’s future.</p> <p>Marks said he was "energised" about leading the ABC. </p> <p>"All Australians, when they want to know the truth, or the facts, or at least the different perspectives on an issue so that they're informed, know that they can come to the ABC and trust that it's that place that they're going to get [that]," he said.</p> <p>When asked about his top priorities, he said: "We should just focus [on]: What is it that we can do well? Channel Nine exec dismissed after work Christmas party

<p>A Channel Nine news executive has been sacked after an alleged incident of inappropriate conduct at a work Christmas party. </p> <p>David Richardson, executive producer of the network’s newsroom in Darwin, was let go on Monday, just hours after the company received a formal complaint about his behaviour. </p> <p>The complaint relates to remarks allegedly made at a party on Friday evening, with Richardson reportedly being escorted from the Nine building in Darwin on Monday. </p> <p>Richardson, known broadly in the industry as “Sluggo”, climbed through the ranks of commercial television as a reporter before moving behind the scenes.</p> <p>His last role was as a producer on Nine’s Under Investigation with Liz Hayes before the show was axed in August. </p> <p>Richardson then went on to become the newsroom executive, in a role he held for just two months before being sacked. </p> <p>The decision to fire Richardson comes after a damning review of the company’s workplace culture exposed a history of inappropriate conduct. </p> <p>An external investigation released in October found Nine had a “systemic issue” with bullying, discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, and the abuse of power and authority.</p> <p><em>Image credits: news.com.au</em></p>

Happy news after AFL great's devastating diagnosis

<p>Anthony Rocca has shared a positive update on his cancer battle. </p> <p>The Collingwood goalkicking great was diagnosed with with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma earlier this year after a series of tests and scan, and had to step back from his  role as coach of under-18s side Northern Knights to get treatment. </p> <p>On Tuesday, he revealed that he had undergone the final day of his sixth and last round of chemotherapy, which had been successful, with two years of maintenance immunotherapy to go. </p> <p>“I’m fortunate to be able to say that all is looking great and it has gone to plan,” Rocca wrote on social media. </p> <p>“A heartfelt thank you to my oncologist, nurses and all the staff at Epworth hospital.</p> <p>“They are truly remarkable, caring and show great teamwork dealing with people with challenging circumstances.</p> <p>“I am feeling great and looking forward (to) 2025.</p> <p>“Thank you to everyone who has called and texted, your love and support is greatly appreciated.”</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; First driver fined under new road rules

<p>The driver of a luxury car is believed to be the first person fined under new rules that requires high-powered vehicle owners to hold a special license.</p> <p>New legislation in South Australia came into force on December 1st this year that requires drivers of ultra high-powered vehicles (UHPV) to hold a U class licence.</p> <p>Drivers who flout the rules can be hit with six demerit points a maximum fine of $2,500 for the first offence, with the penalty for subsequent offences potentially leading to one year of imprisonment.</p> <p>On Monday, police in South Australia revealed a man driving a Lamborghini had been fined for allegedly breaching the new law on Sunday: the first day the legislation came into force.</p> <p>“About 7.30am on Sunday 1 December, police stopped a Lamborghini Huracan on Queensborough Ave, Hillcrest after noticing it was not bearing a rear number plate,” a South Australia Police spokesman wrote in a media release.</p> <p>“The officer identified the vehicle as being classed as an UHPV however checks on the man’s licence revealed that he did not have the required ‘U’ class licence endorsement."</p> <p>“A 36-year-old man from Evandale was issued with an expiation notice for driving with an expired licence for that class of vehicle.”</p> <p>The requirement for the licence was introduced following the death of Sophia Naismith, according to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.</p> <p>In 2019, Sophia Naismith, 15, and her friend were struck luxury Lamborghini after the luxury car mounted the kerb and hit the teenagers before crashing into a restaurant. </p> <p>The Naismiths campaigned for changes and they were introduced, with Attorney-General Kyam Maher saying: “If you drive an ultra high-powered vehicle, you need to go through training to have that accredited on your licence.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: South Australia Police</em></p>

Sir Bob Geldof reveals new version of iconic Christmas song

<p>Sir Bob Geldof has shared the details of the 2024 reprise of the iconic song <em>Do They Know It's Christmas?</em>, revealing why the new version of the song will be the last. </p> <p><em>Do They Know It's Christmas?</em> was first released in 1984, and was sparked by Bob Geldof being disturbed by a news report on the famine in Ethiopia. </p> <p>He enlisted big names such as Bono, Boy George, Sting and George Michael to join in on the song to raise awareness and money for the famine.</p> <p>"I was sickened by it. Queen Mary launches new podcast on loneliness

<p>Queen Mary has launched a new podcast focused on helping the most vulnerable in society. </p> <p>The royal revealed the new venture on Instagram, through her official charity, the Mary Foundation. </p> <p>The three-episode podcast, called the <em>Lonely Youth</em> series, will focus on those experiencing social isolation giving "insight into the nuances of loneliness by mixing professionalism and personal stories from young people".</p> <p>The launch of the podcast follows a landmark survey across Denmark that was conducted in 2023 and found 73 per cent of 16-19-year-olds experience loneliness, regardless of whether they are alone or in the company of others. </p> <p>It also found that 17 per cent  of 16-24-year-olds feel very lonely.</p> <p>The proportion of people in Denmark who experience loneliness has increased dramatically since the first national survey in 2013, which has inspired the Queen of Denmark to take action. </p> <p>"These are heavy numbers that we must do something about," Queen Mary said.</p> <p>"Podcasting is not something that we have much experience with yet at the Mary Foundation, but I hope that you will listen and welcome it," she added.</p> <p>She also said that she was "proud" to be starting the podcast through her own foundation as she is an avid listener of podcasts herself, especially  "when I have to go from one place to another".</p> <p>"Some days I'm in the mood for entertainment, and other days I use it to gain knowledge and new input," she said.</p> <p>The release date of the podcast has yet to be revealed and it is unclear whether the royal herself will speak across the episodes. </p> <p>The podcast will be shared via the Mary Foundation website and other podcast platforms. </p> <p>Queen Mary's foundation focuses on three core areas: bullying and wellbeing, loneliness and domestic violence, and was launched in 2007.</p> <p><em>Images: The Danish Royal Household/Mary Foundation</em></p>

Australia's most decorated Olympian drops huge news

<p>Australia's most decorated Olympian, Emma McKeon has announced her retirement from swimming on Monday. </p> <p>After an incredible career that spanned across three Olympics and yielded 14 Olympic medals, including six golds, the Olympic champion announced her retirement from the pool in a social media post. </p> <p>"Today I am officially retiring from competitive swimming," shared on Instagram.</p> <p>"Leading into Paris, I knew it would be my last Olympics, and the months since have given me time to reflect on my journey, and think about what I wanted my future to look like in swimming."</p> <p>"I am proud of myself for giving my swimming career absolutely everything, both physically and mentally," she continued. </p> <p>"I wanted to see what I was capable of - and I did. Swimming has given me so much. <p>Guy Sebastian's wife Jules Sebastian has shared her heartache this week following the loss of her beloved father. </p> <p>The stylist shared a moving tribute to her father on Instagram, with a series of photos including pictures from her childhood and on her wedding day and the caption: "This week my beautiful Dad went to heaven to be with the angels." </p> <p>"Our hearts are broken but also so full of gratitude for the time we had with him in the last days of his life," she continued. </p> <p>She then remembered all of the great things about her dad, saying: "When I think of my Dad I think of the twinkle in his eye. He was always ready for a laugh and a joke and had the lightest way of cruising through life. My Dad had time for everyone. He made everyone feel important.
