Cricket world mourns passing of Ashes legend

Peter Lever, the former England fast bowler and a key member of the victorious 1970-71 Ashes side, has passed away at the age of 84. His former county, Lancashire, confirmed the news on Thursday.

“We are deeply saddened by the news that Peter Lever has passed away, aged 84,” Lancashire posted on X. “Peter was inducted into our Hall of Fame last year after playing 301 First-Class matches between 1960 and 1976 — taking 796 wickets. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Lever played 17 Test matches and 10 One-Day Internationals for England, including the famous inaugural One Day International in 1971. Known for his aggressive pace and sharp movement, he left a lasting impact on the game.

His England career began in 1970 against a Rest of the World XI at The Oval, where he took an impressive 7-83, dismissing cricketing greats such as Garry Sobers, Mushtaq Mohammad, Graeme Pollock, Clive Lloyd and Mike Procter. Although the match was later stripped of its Test status, his performance earned him an official England debut later that year in the Ashes series opener in Perth.

Lever played a crucial role in England's 1970-71 Ashes triumph, which remains the last time Australia was whitewashed at home. He returned to Australia in 1975 and delivered a career-best performance, taking 6-38 in Melbourne. On the first day of that Test, he dismissed four of Australia’s top five batsmen for just two runs. Despite England securing an innings victory in that match, it was their only win in the six-Test series.

However, one of the most defining moments of Lever's career came in 1975 during a Test match against New Zealand in Auckland. A bouncer he bowled struck debutant Ewen Chatfield on the unprotected left temple, causing him to collapse on the pitch. Chatfield's heart stopped, leading to fears that he had died, but he was revived through CPR by England physiotherapist Bernard Thomas. The traumatic incident deeply affected Lever, who later admitted that he contemplated retirement.

Lever played only one more Test match after that, featuring in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s in 1975, where he took two wickets in a drawn game. He retired from first-class cricket the following year, concluding a distinguished career with Lancashire.

Peter Lever will be remembered as a fierce competitor and a dedicated servant of English cricket. His contributions to the sport, particularly his role in England’s historic Ashes win, ensure his legacy will endure.

Images: Daily Mail UK

“They are treating us like chumps": Karl fires up over supermarket practices

In a heated interview on the Today show, Karl Stefanovic confronted Treasurer Jim Chalmers over the conduct of major supermarket chains, accusing them of treating Australian consumers like "chumps". The exchange followed the release of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) final report into supermarket practices, highlighting concerns over price-gouging, misleading discounts and "shrinkflation".

The ACCC’s inquiry found that the dominance of Woolworths, which controls 38% of the national grocery market, and Coles, which holds 29%, has resulted in an “oligopolistic” effect. Despite this, the regulator refrained from endorsing Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s call for greater powers to dismantle the supermarket giants, cautioning that there was no “silver bullet” solution.

Treasurer Chalmers acknowledged the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, saying that “Australians are still feeling that pressure at the checkout. And that’s why we’re cracking down on the supermarkets.” He added that the government was working to foster greater competition in the industry to prevent further consumer exploitation.

However, Stefanovic challenged Chalmers, arguing that no significant changes had been made to curb supermarket dominance. “They are treating us like chumps and they continue to,” he said. “And I’ve not seen anything that’s going to stop them from doing that.”

Chalmers then defended the government’s economic policies, citing key improvements including declining inflation, rising real wages and economic growth. “We know that people are still under pressure,” he admitted but insisted that progress was being made.

In response to the ACCC report, Coles issued a statement claiming the company also faces financial pressures, including rising rents and electricity costs. “We do not control these inflationary costs in the economy – but they contribute to higher grocery prices for Australian households,” the statement read.

Coles also defended its pricing strategy, stating that grocery inflation (excluding tobacco) remained at just 1% for the first half of the financial year. The company assured that it is reviewing the ACCC’s recommendations and has already implemented changes to improve pricing transparency and customer communication.

Images: The Today show

Over 350k Aussies to be forced back into the office

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has vowed to end working from home arrangements for public servants, forcing them back into an office five days a week.

The leader of the Coalition will end flexible work arrangements for federal government employees, which currently allows them to work from home for two days a week.

According to a report in the Australian Financial Review, the Coalition will also make massive job cuts, slashing about 36,000 jobs, which will save about $6 billion per year, if elected in the upcoming federal election.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned that the drastic move would impact frontline workers, meaning slower delivery times for Aussies on benefits, including veterans.

Opposition spokeswoman Jane Hume said the government has offered a “blank cheque to work from home” to employees, saying it was “unsustainable” and “not an arrangement that works for everyone”.

On Tuesday, 7News reporter Nick McCallum and Founding Director of Western Sydney Women, Amanda Rose, spoke with Nat Barr about the policy on Sunrise.

“Nick, would there be a revolt if public servants are ordered back to the office?” Barr asked.

“I have no doubt there would be. I actually like the policy. I think it is ridiculous that, what is it now, more than 60 per cent of federal public servants have ability to work at home,” McCallum said.

“There is a big ‘but’ to all of this: Peter Dutton, it’s a perfect policy for him to sound tough, sound Donald Trump-like, bang his chest and say ‘I am going to demand they come back’ but they’ve recently signed a workplace agreement and under that there is a presumption that they can work at home."

“All people in the public service can at least request it. There is a presumption they can do it and there is no limit on the number of days they can actually work from home."

“So, he can’t really change that until 2027 anyway. So, call me cynical but it’s a perfect policy for him but at the moment he can’t do a lot about it.”

Albo quizzed over luxury home purchase

Anthony Albanese has been grilled by Karl Stefanovic over the recent purchase of a multi-million dollar home, that was widely slammed by the public as being "out of touch".

As part of his pre-election campaign, the Prime Minister and his fiancé Jodie Haydon sat down with 60 Minutes where they discussed the controversial real estate move.

Karl Stefanovic described as the $4.1 million purchase of the Copacabana holiday home as “harebrained", as Albo defended his decision to buy the home.

“Whose harebrained idea was Copacabana?” Stefanovic asked as the program began.

Mr Albanese, who is notoriously sensitive about the purchase amid claims it was tone-deaf during a cost-of-living crisis, laughed at the question as he responded, “Look, Jodie and I are getting married.”

“What you don’t do is move into the family home where Carmel and I raised Nathan together as a family. And guess what, Karl? At some stage … I won’t be Prime Minister into my 80s and therefore we have bought a place close to where Jodie grew up … where her family are all based.”

In the program, Stefanovic observed that, “I’ve spent some time with her these last couple of days and I get the feeling the girl from the Central Coast would sooner rather than later have her feet up at Copacabana, whether you are there or not!”

“No — well, she’s a Coastie and a proud one,” Mr Albanese replied. “And it was very much a personal decision, not a political one. And I think Australians get that.”

Karl then asked about the controversy around the home, asking the PM, “Did it sting you at all the criticism around that, the perception being during a cost-of-living crisis, the PM shouldn’t be seen as being, you know, so lavish?”

Albanese responded, “I’m pretty resilient, Karl, and if you’re worried about every bit of criticism that was out there, then life would be much more difficult than it is."

Albanese clashes with Karl Stefanovic over alleged terror plot

Anthony Albanese has clashed with Karl Stefanovic over when he was briefed about an alleged anti-Semitic terror plot in Sydney.

The Prime Minister reportedly had not been informed about the discovery of an explosive-laden caravan until just before it was made public on January 29, ten days after the initial discovery.

In an interview with the Today show on Thursday morning, Stefanovic suggested that Albanese "must have been absolutely livid” that he was not notified earlier.

The Prime Minister responded: “Now you’re making an incredible assumption there, Karl."

“What’s important here is that we don’t play politics with national security.

“And when it comes to a range of the issues related to the anti-Semitic attacks, what I haven’t done is go out there and reveal intelligence.”

Stefanovic pushed on asking Albanese if he would support an inquiry into whether there “was an embarrassing communications failure”, to which the Prime Minister shot back with: “So stop the investigations?”

“Stop doing the work to track down the perpetrators of these crimes and engage in politics?”

He continued: “Do you think that that is a sensible use of resources?”

Stefanovic said it deserved "some focus", adding: “If the prime minister of this country is not told about something of this magnitude ... I’d be scratching my head going ... ‘why not?’”

But Albanese shut him down by saying what was “important is tracking down the perpetrators of these crimes”.

“I find it frankly absurd that people think, for example, that resources should be diverted, that the AFP (Australian Federal Police) and intelligence agencies should be engaged in a political process rather than doing their job,” he said.

“And you know what my job is, Karl? It’s really simple. It’s to back our authorities to do their job. All right. And that’s what I do.”

Police discovered the caravan in Dural, Sydney, with authorities saying that it was packed with mining explosives.

They have also allegedly found a list of targets, which reportedly included the Great Synagogue in Sydney’s CBD and the Sydney Jewish Museum.

Image: Nine

Peter Overton opens up on health battle

Nine News star Peter Overton has opened up about the brutal health battle that's kept him away from the news desk over the past few weeks.

The presenter had to undergo surgery on his vocal chords, after doctors found a polyp that urgently needed to be removed.

“I took six weeks annual leave, and then my voice suddenly said, I’m on annual leave as well. I got very husky and raspy over the holidays, and went to the GP. He sent me to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon, and suddenly the holiday turned into an operation in a Sydney hospital,” Overton said.

“I had a polyp, quite a large polyp on one of my vocal cords.

"They stick a camera up your nose and then down into your vocal cord, and then on a big screen, you see your vocal cords. And I saw this. It was like a big blister, a lump just hanging off the cord.

“And I must admit, it scared the living daylights out of me."

The polyp was removed three days later and he could return home after a day in recovery, but was unable to talk for a week.

“It was interesting being mute. If I went to get the milk, I’d write an email to myself and it would say I’d have to show it to someone!”

News of Overton’s health scare first emerged earlier this month, when his wife, Jess Rowe, revealed that he was on extended leave.

Overton shared that he's been working with a speech pathologist to get his voice back to what it was like before.

"I've worked with a great speech pathologist who has got me back to the point I'm at," he said.

"And three weeks since the operation, I'm doing the news again."

"The human body is amazing. I've really learned that, and I've learned about the healing process, and I've learned about how intricate your vocal chords are and what they do," he added.

"It's been fascinating."

Image: Nine News/ Instagram

Karl Stefanovic lifts the lid on former Today co-hosts

Karl Stefanovic has shared what he really thinks about the women he has shared The Today Show hosting duties with, such as Jess Rowe, Tracy Grimshaw and Lisa Wilkinson.

In a candid tell-all interview with Stellar magazine's Something To Talk About podcast, Stefanovic discussed the highs and lows of hosting Today since he joined alongside Tracy Grimshaw in February 2005.

“I wasn’t overly nervous, I just knew that I didn’t know enough,” Stefanovic admitted, adding that it took “some time” for him to feel he was no longer out of his depth.

After just one year on the show, Grimshaw announced she would be leaving Today to host A Current Affair, as Karl recalled the cheeky way she informed him of her imminent departure.

“I remember I was late for work because I’d left my shoes at home – I ended up getting Ray Martin’s shoes,” he told the podcast host.

“So I came into the studio like, ‘Hey, Trace, look at this. I’ve got Ray Martin’s shoes.’"

“Tracy leans across and goes, ‘You got his shoes? I got his job.’ That’s how she broke it to me. She denies that story, but it’s 100 per cent accurate.”

Grimshaw was then replaced by Jess Rowe, whose hosting role with Today was short-lived, as Karl admitted Rowe had been “pilloried”.

The mum-of-two was sacked from Today after returning from maternity leave, and her departure made headlines at the time when it was alleged then-Nine boss Eddie McGuire had spoken about wanting to “bone” (fire) Rowe during a meeting with Nine executives.

“It was shocking, the treatment that she had. She was called the most heinous things, and I was just trying to survive,” he explained on Stellar’s podcast.

“I’ve apologised to Jess since then, but at the time I just didn’t know how to navigate my own future, let alone be there for her in the way that I should have.”

Rowe was then replaced by Lisa Wilkinson in 2007, who stayed with the show for ten years.

While there was much public speculation about Lisa and Karl's relationship after her dramatic exit from Today, Stefanovic told Stellar that he doesn’t “waste any time” of his life “thinking about any negative parts” of their long professional stint together.

“But this I will say about Lisa: genuinely adored working with her. I found her to be an incredibly interesting, intelligent, funny woman,” he insisted.

“She taught me so much about the craft of conversation, and we had a really beautiful relationship. So there is no ill will. Only great things came from that.”

The longtime breakfast TV host currently sits alongside Sarah Abo at the desk, for which he describes himself as “so fortunate”.

“In this game, there’s stuff you have control of and there’s stuff you don’t. At any point on any given day, I can be replaced. The show is bigger than I am,” Stefanovic pointed out.

“I don’t see Sarah ever being replaced. And I genuinely have no interest in working with anyone else."

Jess Rowe has revealed why her husband Peter Overton has been absent from the 9News desk, sharing that he had to undergo surgery.

The podcast host took to Instagram to inform her followers that Overton will be back presenting the news eventually, but has been recovering at home after having surgery during the Christmas break.

“As you know Pete doesn’t do Insta – and he wanted me to share some news with you," she began.

"He’s off work for a little longer at the moment after an ENT surgeon discovered a polyp on one of his vocal cords which explains his very raspy voice over the holidays."

“He was operated on and part of his recovery is no talking for now (which is a HUGE challenge for him!!)”

She added, “Hopefully he’ll be back to 9News soonish. Big thanks to the great doctors, nurses, speech pathologists, and Pete’s wonderful work colleagues.”

Fans rushed to share their concern for the Nine presenter in the comments below the post.

“Aww thank you so much for sharing this story with Pete’s fans who love him for the work he does and looking forward for his recovery from the surgery,” one fan commented.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery Pete. Looking forward to hearing your calming voice on the airwaves real soon,” another fan said. “We know Jess and the girls would be looking after Pete with great care.”

Pauline Hanson levels lawsuit at Lidia Thorpe and Today show

Pauline Hanson, leader of the One Nation party, has initiated defamation proceedings against Senator Lidia Thorpe and Channel Nine’s Today show after being described as “a convicted racist” during a live television interview.

Legal letters sent to both parties demand immediate apologies and retractions, claiming the statement is false and defamatory.

Hanson’s legal team, represented by barrister Sue Chrysanthou and solicitor Anthony Jeffries, has labelled the situation “highly irresponsible” and warned of further legal action if the demands are not met.

In the letter to Senator Thorpe, Hanson’s lawyers argue, “You alleged during that interview that Senator Hanson has been convicted of racism. That never occurred.” They insist no criminal conviction of that nature exists and called on Thorpe to issue a public correction.

The dispute arises in the wake of a Federal Court ruling earlier this month, where Hanson was found to have racially vilified Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi. The ruling stemmed from a 2022 social media post in which Hanson told Senator Faruqi to “pack your bags and p*ss off back to Pakistan”. Justice Angus Stewart described the tweet as an “angry personal attack” that conveyed “a strong form of racism”.

Hanson has appealed the court's decision, arguing that the statement did not target Faruqi’s race, religion or ethnicity and should not be classified as racist. Her legal team claims the tweet was directed solely at Senator Faruqi and was not reflective of broader discrimination. They further argue that the original judgment misinterpreted the context of the remarks.

In the same Today show interview, Senator Thorpe also described Australia as “a very racist, divided country”. Thorpe has not yet publicly addressed Hanson’s legal warning.

Hanson, whose supporters have donated nearly $700,000 to fund her legal efforts, appears ready for a protracted legal battle. Her legal filings challenge the broader interpretations of offensive speech and the legal thresholds for defamation and racial vilification.

Images: Today Show

"Unimaginable curse": Karl Stefanovic pays tribute to fallen father

Karl Stefanovic has paid tribute to Lachlan Webb, a young Queensland dad who sadly passed away from a rare genetic brain disorder.

Webb first started showing symptoms of Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) early last year, a rare degenerative brain disorder where the inability to fall asleep is just one of the many symptoms of the condition which many describe to be a living nightmare.

From there the symptoms progress to the inability to walk, loss of sight and speech and eventual total shutdown of the body's ability to keep itself alive among others.

The Queensland father had already lost his grandmother, aunties, uncles and his mum Narelle to the disease, with his mum passing away just six months after she was diagnosed.

The condition is so rare that only 50 families worldwide are known to carry the gene.

Karl Stefanovic first met Webb and his sister Hayley back in 2016, after they both learned that they carried the fatal gene. Despite the diagnosis the siblings were determined to ensure the "curse" ended with them, travelling to the US to participate in a clinical study.

The siblings also both underwent IVF with their respective partners to ensure that their children won't carry the gene.

"Lachlan was a remarkable man battling an unimaginable curse," Karl said on the Today show.

"Everyone at Today is thinking of the Webb family, Hayley, Lachlan's beautiful wife Claire and his little boy Morrison."

"Hayley also has that gene, their bravery and resilience was incredible to witness firsthand and it's such an important message - everyday is a gift and our thoughts, our prayers and our love are with you all this morning."

Images: Nine

Aussie rocker hits back at John Farnham's drugging claims

A legendary Australian rockstar has hit back at John Farnham's claims that he was drugged by a former manager.

Peter Tilbrook, who was the guitarist for iconic Aussie rock band The Masters Apprentices in the 1960s, has taken to social media to share his own stories about Darryl Sambell, after Farnham wrote in his memoir that Samuel drugged him in the early days of his career.

As Farnham wrote in The Voice Inside, he recalled that Sambell “drugged me for years and I had no f**king idea,” until he found a half-dissolved pill at the bottom of a cup of coffee.

Asked what it was, Sambell told Farnham: “That’s just something to keep you awake.”

However, Tilbrook took aim at the comments saying he also worked with Sambell and only had good experiences.

"Sambell was a brilliant and skilful manager to us, and from what we saw and heard, definitely to Farnham as well," Tilbrook said online.

"I find it very hard to believe that any another manager at the time could have done any more to further Johnny's incredible career."

Sambell, who managed Farnham's early career from 1967 to 1976, also managed The Masters around the same time, and Tilbrook asserted his experience with the late manager was nothing like Farnham's.

"He was an amazing, caring and resourceful manager," Tilbrook said.

"Most loathed woman in parliament": Karl Stefanovic grills Lidia Thorpe

Karl Stefanovic has labelled Lidia Thorpe as “the most loathed woman in parliament” during a fiery interview on the Today show.

The Today host interviewed the politician on Thursday morning, noting that her decision to heckle King Charles was not winning her much support.

“Lidia, good morning to you. Nice to see you. I think it’s fair to say you might very well be the most loathed woman in parliament in Canberra at the moment. And that’s really saying something,’’ Stefanovic said.

However, the Senator had no regrets and said that she was used to being "the black sheep" of politics.

“Oh, well, it’s just another day in the colony, Karl. I’m used to that treatment,” she said.

“You know. I am the black sheep of the family, if you like. But I wanted to send a message to the King. I got that message across. The whole world is talking about it.

“And my people are happy because my people have been protesting for decades and decades. As you all know, for exactly this. And so the message has been sent, delivered. Now it’s up to the King of England to respond.”

Stefanovic then asked her: “The question this morning you were being asked is, why the hell doesn’t Lidia Thorpe just do everyone a favour and get out of Canberra? Will you?”

To which she replied: “I’m about truth telling. I’m loud, proud, black. Get used to it and listen to what I have to say.

“We need to grow up as a nation and get rid of him and have our own head of state.”

The broadcaster then showed a video of her swearing allegiance to the late Queen Elizabeth.

“Did that hurt a little when you swore your allegiance? Did it take a little bit of your soul?’’ Stefanovic asked.

“Absolutely it did. And I had to go through a process with my family prior to doing that, because swearing allegiance to someone else from another country whose ancestors have done a lot of damage to my ancestors, I think is completely inappropriate,” she replied.

This comes after Thorpe's pledge to Queen Elizabeth's "hairs" instead of "heir" came to light.

“We don’t need to be paying the Governor-General $800,000 a year to sign a piece of legislation. And we paid for that man to come here. How many millions of dollars did that cost?” she continued.

Karl hit back saying that Thorpe herself is “getting paid pretty well to be part of the process and to be part of parliament, a place you clearly despise.”

She replied: “Yeah. I’m being paid to do my job. You could say it’s paying the rent if you like."

“This government has walked back a treaty. I know the opposition is not interested in treaty. So where else do you go? You go to the King of England. Who? Whose ancestors treated with other countries but didn’t treaty here. So there’s unfinished business. I’ll spend the next three years getting that unfinished business done.”

Images: Nine

"We let you down": Karl Stefanovic speaks out on Nine report

Karl Stefanovic has spoken out about the report into toxic workplace culture at the Nine Network, calling out the “perpetrators” of bad behaviour.

On Thursday, a report conducted by independent investigators revealed that Nine has “has a systemic issue with abuse of power and authority; bullying, discrimination and harassment; and sexual harassment”, with several employees sharing their own horror stories of working for the network.

During Friday's episode of the Today Show, Karl took a moment to discuss the findings of the report, saying "many people are hurting" over the shocking allegations.

Echoing the concerns of Nine stars including Deb Knight and Dimity Clancey who raised concerns at a meeting on Thursday, the Today show host said he understood concerns that the report didn’t “name names.”

“They feel like what was the point of speaking out if perpetrators are not called out? I asked the same question yesterday and it’s my understanding several investigations are now underway and we have to be patient for the process of all that,’’ he said.

“It’s essential and it’s critical. I want to say it’s not about us, but there are good men who do work here at Nine who find what happened absolutely intolerable, who struggle to understand how we didn’t know more and do something, how it grieved you."

“I feel like we have all in a way, let you down. I love my work colleagues here. Women I have the honour to present with women on the floor of this great show."

“Women behind the scenes who make us all better. I’m grateful women are this company and they are the way forward. They will show the way. We just have to listen and act.”

"I genuinely, genuinely feel for the women who have given testimony, I can't imagine how hard that was and the courage that it took," Karl said.

"It's going to be up to all of us now to do better, to say enough - this stops now."

Aussie TV star shocks with unrecognisable makeover

An Aussie TV star has undergone a major makeover to become a popular television character.

Ahead of the release of the highly-anticipated The Penguin show on HBO, Karl Stefanovic spent hours in hair and makeup to turn into the Gotham City bad guy.

The 50-year-old Today show host completed his look with the super-villain’s signature facial scar, all while sporting The Penguin’s infamous black and purple suit.

“There’s a new Kingpin in town…” read a captioned posted on the Today show’s Instagram.

The makeover didn't stop there, with Stefanovic then spotted driving around the streets of North Sydney outside Nine HQ, in a bright purple Maserati with the windows down as he laughed at passers-by in the trademark Penguin snarl.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; We hope you love it as much as we loved making it,” said Holiday.

The response to the video has been mostly positive, while some people couldn't contain their confusion.

“This is so Australian, it should be used as a tourism advertisement,” reads one top-rated comment read.

“Just dropped to my knees in Aldi,” commented one fellow Aussie musician, while another called it the "Song of the year."

Another person commented, "What is going on?? I feel like I’ve just woken up from a bender at 3am with Rage playing hilariously bad 80’s videos…", while Karl's wife Jasmine added, "You need to wear eyeliner all the time now. Suits you!"
