Big change for new buses after Hunter Valley crash

<p>Australian buses and coaches fitted with seatbelts will soon be required to have announcements reminding people to buckle up, following the tragic Hunter Valley bus crash that killed 10 people almost two years ago. </p> <p>On Tuesday, the federal government announced that the new rule will require these vehicles to include visual and audio alerts reminding passengers to buckle up, similar to those on airplanes. </p> <p>“Travelling by bus is one of the safest forms of transport in Australia, and these new audible and visual signage requirements will ensure this continues to be the case,” federal assistant Regional Development Minister Anthony Chisholm said.</p> <p>The government also announced it had closed a loophole where some buses with seats under 1m high were exempted from requiring seatbelts. </p> <p>Under the regulations, all new bus and coach models must comply by November 1, 2026, while existing models will need to make the changes by November 1, 2027.</p> <p>“These safety outcomes further improve what is generally regarded as the most stringent seatbelt rules for buses in the world,” Bus industry confederation chair Tony Hopkins said. </p> <p>“With seat belt usage currently as low as 7 per cent on some services, this provides a simple but powerful message that reminds bus passengers to fasten a seat belt.</p> <p>“After all, if a seat belt is provided in a bus it must be worn by law.”</p> <p><em>Image: </em><em>Mino Surkala / Shutterstock.com</em></p>

Even calm people can fly into a rage behind the wheel. Here’s how to curb your road rage – before it’s too late

We instinctively apologise or step aside, and usually don’t scream at, stalk, or attack the other person.</p> <p>But put us in a car, and <a href="https://x.com/Boenau/status/1755234912540459059">something changes</a>. People who appear calm in everyday life suddenly tailgate, honk, or shout at strangers. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0925753524002467?casa_token=76NSmREtG8MAAAAA:yFEcndOLjARRfthZMFwOQ3UmPeqgJEwSuAvkaA51rH8fA7v8RzHDamohBhf8Ai7jb3Nrp98pz4I">Problems at work</a> or home can suddenly explode in the form of righteous anger toward other road users.</p> <p>Road rage <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001457523000192">increases crash risk</a>, and victims of road rage incidents often have <a href="https://www.mynrma.com.au/media/press-releases/2024/nrma-releases-worrying-road-rage-data">children in the car</a> with them.</p> <p>So, why does driving <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022437524000914?dgcid=raven_sd_recommender_email">bring out the worst in us</a>? And more importantly, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001457521001755?dgcid=raven_sd_recommender_email">what can we do about it</a>?</p> <h2>Road rage remains common</h2> <p><a href="https://www.mynrma.com.au/media/press-releases/2024/nrma-releases-worrying-road-rage-data">Recent</a> <a href="https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/car-insurance/research/road-rage-study.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com">surveys</a> indicate road rage remains common in Australia.</p> <p>In September 2024, insurer NRMA <a href="https://www.mynrma.com.au/media/press-releases/2024/nrma-releases-worrying-road-rage-data">reported</a> a survey of 1,464 of its members in two states found many had witnessed road rage incidents such as:</p> <ul> <li>tailgating (71%)</li> <li>drivers beeping other drivers (67%)</li> <li>drivers gesturing angrily at other drivers (60%)</li> <li>drivers deliberately cutting in front of other vehicles (58%)</li> <li>drivers getting out of their car to confront to confront another driver (14%)</li> <li>stalking (10%)</li> <li>physical assault (4%).</li> </ul> <p>Another insurer, Budget Direct, <a href="https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/car-insurance/research/road-rage-study.html">reported</a> last year on a survey of 825 people that found about 83% had experienced shouting, cursing, or rude gestures from other people on the road (up by 18% since 2021).</p> <p>And of the female respondents, 87% reported they’d copped this kind of behaviour from other road users.</p> <p>Common triggers for driver anger include tailgating, perceived rudeness (such as not giving a “thank you” wave), and witnessing another person driving dangerously.</p> <p>Aggressive driving behaviours tend to be more common in <a href="https://search.informit.org/doi/abs/10.3316/informit.031918298391749">younger, male drivers</a>.</p> <p>Road rage is a global problem, with studies finding road rage remains common in places such as <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001457509002012?casa_token=G4nhNdF3olAAAAAA:8tdP0GyMiwN4_n4fekvQB-EiUSLa8Q2sgbpMhfUNWh0w9YqeiWft1aPY2ZSFLngcSFZAHfMOQhA">Japan</a>, the <a href="https://newsroom.aaa.com/2016/07/nearly-80-percent-of-drivers-express-significant-anger-aggression-or-road-rage/">US</a>, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1369847805000884">New Zealand</a> and the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1369847898000096">UK</a>, but the degree varies significantly from country to country.</p> <h2>Who is more likely to fly into a rage on the road?</h2> <p>Some of us are more likely than others to fly into a rage while driving. One way researchers <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847815001722">measure</a> this is via a testing tool known as the <a href="https://www.yorku.ca/rokada/psyctest/driving.pdf">Driving Anger Scale</a>.</p> <p>Data from many studies using this test show drivers who are more prone to anger in general are <a href="https://research.monash.edu/en/publications/driving-anger-as-a-psychological-construct-twenty-years-of-resear">more likely to turn that anger into aggression</a>. They get annoyed by more things, are quicker to act on their feelings, take more risks, and as a result, are more likely to be involved in anger-related crashes.</p> <p>Research suggests that while female drivers experience anger just as much as male drivers, they are less likely to act on it in a <a href="https://www.turkpsikiyatri.com/PDF/C18S3/en/angerExpression.pdf">negative way</a>.</p> <p>Female drivers tend to feel more intense anger in certain situations, such as when <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847815001722#f0010">faced with hostile gestures or traffic obstructions</a>, compared to their male counterparts.</p> <h2>What can I do to reduce my road rage?</h2> <p>In a car, we’re physically separated from others, which creates a sense of distance and anonymity – two factors that lower our usual social filters. Encounters feel fleeting.</p> <p>There’s a good chance you won’t be held accountable for what you or say or do, compared to if you were outside the car. And yet, we perceive the stakes as high because mistakes or bad decisions on the road can have serious consequences.</p> <p>This mix of isolation, stress, and the illusion of being in a bubble is a perfect recipe for heightened frustration and anger.</p> <p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0001457521001755?dgcid=raven_sd_recommender_email">Research</a> suggests techniques drawn from cognitive behavioural therapy may help.</p> <p>These include learning to identify when you are starting to feel angry, trying to find alternative explanations for other people’s behaviour, using mindfulness and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847815001758">relaxation</a> and trying to move away from the trigger.</p> <p>The American Automobile Association also <a href="https://exchange.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Road-Rage-Brochure.pdf">suggests</a> you can reduce road rage incidents by being a more considerate driver yourself – always use your indicator, avoid cutting others off and maintain a safe distance from other cars.</p> <p>Try to stay calm when other drivers are angry, and allow extra time in your journey to reduce stress.</p> <p>If driving anger is a frequent issue, consider seeking support or <a href="https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/anger-management">anger management resources</a>.</p> <p>Avoiding — or at least being aware of — <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847821002667">anger rumination</a> can make a big difference. This happens when someone replays anger-inducing events, like being cut off in traffic, over and over in their mind. Instead of letting it go, they dwell on it, fuelling their frustration and making it harder to stay calm.</p> <p>Recognising this pattern and shifting focus — like taking a deep breath or distracting yourself — can help stop anger from escalating into aggression.</p> <p>More broadly, public awareness campaigns highlighting the link between anger and risky driving could also encourage more drivers to seek help.</p> <p>The next time you get behind the wheel, try to remember the other driver, the cyclist, or pedestrian is just another person — someone you might pass on the street without a second thought.</p> <p>We’re often good at forgiving minor missteps in non-driving contexts. The Project reveals which star is not returning for 2025

<p><em>The Project</em> has revealed which major star of the panel show will not be returning for the 2025. </p> <p>According Network Ten, comedian Michael Hing will be leaving the program in 2025 after first joining the cast in 2023. </p> <p>Ten confirmed his departure in a statement, saying, "For the last two years, we have loved Michael Hing’s quick wit and hosting hijinks as a regular on <em>The Project.</em>"</p> <p>"We wish Michael every success for his nationwide stand-up tour and look forward to welcoming him back to the desk between gigs in 2025."</p> <p>Hing also shared the news on social media, explaining that he is leaving <em>The Project</em> in order to focus on his stand-up comedy tour of Australia, which runs from February to July.</p> <p>He wrote, “Unlike last year (when I didn’t do a tour), this year I’m not eagerly (terrifiedly) awaiting the birth of our first child. New road initiatives rolling out this year

<p>Several new road initiatives are set to be introduced this year, as government plans to trial out new technology in 2025. </p> <p>From wireless solar powered signs advising motorists of new hazards to in-road pods that collect data on traffic volume and speed, these initiatives will be trialled on regional roads as part of the NSW government's $5 million Smarter Highways program. </p> <p>Each trial will feature technology that detects an issue on the road, which will activate the Smarter Highway Activated Vehicle and Environment Systems (SHAVES) to warn drivers about hazards. </p> <p>The system will have self-adaptive electronic signage which will be able to predict events and advise motorist, including bad weather and animals approaching the road. </p> <p>The signs will communicate with each other using localised radio communications. </p> <p>The NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison said that the introduction of the technology aims to "reduce risky driving actions such as not driving to the conditions". </p> <p>They are also trialling a new in-road 4G traffic counter device which can detect and provide info on vehicle volumes, speeds,  road temperatures and system health among other information in real time. </p> <p>It is being trialled on the Great Western Highway at Kelso and the Newell Highway at Dubbo, with its use particularly important for the start and end of holidays and during special events. </p> <p>“The more information you can give to the motoring public about an incident early, the better,” NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury told <em>Yahoo News</em>.</p> <p>“We’ve always said more needs to be done to alert people earlier when there is an incident. It gives them the time they need to make a judgement on whether they need to proceed along a different route, or delay their journey”.</p> <p>The NRMA supports the trials and introduction of the new technology, with Khoury saying: "the more we are relying on new technology to make our roads more efficient and safer, the better the outcome for the public.”</p> <p><strong>Here are the five Smarter Highways trials this year </strong></p> <p><strong>1.  Smarter Highway Activated Vehicle and Environmental Systems (SHAVES)</strong>- Self-adaptive electronic signage able to predict events and advise motorists of hazards.</p> <p><strong>2. Road Pod Vehicle Magnetometer</strong> - 4G powered devices in the road to provide data on traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and other issues. </p> <p><strong>3. Rural Intersection Activated Warning System</strong> - Road sensors advise motorists through Variable Speed Limit signs of a slow and large vehicle entering from a side road.</p> <p><strong>4. Improved local area traffic management during major disruptions</strong></p> <p><strong>5. "Utterly devastated": Iconic Irish singer dies at age 65

<p>Iconic Irish singer Linda Nolan has died at the age of 65. </p> <p>The singer who, along with her sisters Coleen, Maureen, Bernie, Denise, and Anne, belonged to the Irish family group The Nolans, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. </p> <p>Linda was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and after years struggling with the illness, was told in 2011 that her cancer was in remission. </p> <p>In 2017, the cancer returned as secondary breast cancer, which continued to spread until it reached her brain in 2023. </p> <p>Linda's sister Coleen shared the news of her passing, describing her sister as a "beacon of love, kindness, and strength" in a post on Instagram. </p> <p>She wrote, "I am utterly devastated by the passing of my sister, Linda. Linda was a beacon of love, kindness, and strength. Her wit, humour, and laughter were infectious, and her presence could light up any room."</p> <p>"Linda had a heart full of compassion and always knew how to bring comfort and joy to those around her.</p> <p>"Her memory will live on in the many lives she touched, and while we will miss her more than words can express, we take solace in the love and warmth she shared with all of us. Rest in peace, Linda." </p> <p>Coleen concluded, "You will forever be in our hearts."</p> <p>Linda was part of an Irish family girl group that became prominent in the late 1970s and early 1980s.</p> <p>The family relocated to England in 1962 where they performed under the name The Singing Nolans before becoming The Nolan Sisters in 1974 and later just The Nolans in 1980.</p> <p> </p> <p>They gained fame with their hit songs <em>I'm in the Mood for Dancing</em>, <em>Gotta Pull Myself Together</em>, and <em>Don't Make Waves</em>. </p> <p>Linda was not the only Nolan to face a breast cancer diagnosis, as older sister Anne, 74, and younger sister Bernie, who died 2013 aged 52, also suffered the disease. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Steve Meddle/SplashNews.com/Shutterstock Editorial </em></p>

True meaning behind common Aussie road sign

<p>Thousands of drivers past this Australian road sign every day - but very few know what it means. </p> <p>A confused motorist took to Reddit to share an image of the road sign they spotted on the Northern Territory's Stuart Highway, which featured a picture of a hand. </p> <p>He and and his travel companion assumed the sign meant there was a spot to wash your hands or windows nearby, however they were both wrong. </p> <p>The sign, which was part of a larger rest area sign, indicates there is Aboriginal artwork in the area. </p> <p>"According to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (South Australia), published in 'Road Sign Guidelines' issued 28/03/2023, it means 'Aboriginal Attractions'," one person commented </p> <p>"Yep, usually rock art or some other Aboriginal site," said another.</p> <p>It is often seen in national parks and is the same symbol used nationally. </p> <p>People shared their own hilarious assumptions with one writing: "Warning, jazz hands in 2km", while another commented: "Beware of swarming ants".</p> <p>"Love that it's for indigenous art, but my first thought was a warning to tourists to not put bare skin on the bitumen," another commented. </p> <p>Others admitted they never paid any particular attention to the sign. </p> <p>"Oh I've never seen this before! And think it's great. Honestly my brain went to kids craft area for some reason but why would a random regional picnic stop have a kids craft area," one wrote. </p> <p>"I genuinely thought someone had just spray painted the sign with their hand on it. i have never seen this," another commented. </p> <p>A third person added their own hilarious interpretation saying: "This is so cool, have never seen one of these before. "Insurmountable grief": Block stars share their devastating loss

<p><em>The Block</em> stars Dan and Dani Reilly have shared the devastating news that their daughter has passed away. </p> <p>In an emotional post on Instagram, the couple confirmed the heartbreaking loss, revealing their daughter Billie Vera Reilly was just 10 days old.</p> <p>"It is with insurmountable grief that we share the news that our daughter Billie, has passed on from this life and into the next at just 10 days young," the couple shared.</p> <p>Alongside a photo of the couple at hospital by Billie's side, they shared that Billie was everything that they had ever wanted.</p> <p>"In Billie's short time in this world, she taught us an intensity of both love and pain we never knew possible. Purple Wiggle welcomes first child

<p>Purple Wiggle John Pearce is officially a dad!</p> <p>Pearce welcomed his first child together with his wife Jessie on Monday and recently shared the news to fans on social media. </p> <p>“Welcome to the world our beautiful angel,” they wrote on Instagram.</p> <p>“We have never felt a love like this.”</p> <p>They shared an adorable family photo of them holding their baby boy, Henry Nicholas Adamo Pearce, and another photo of their sleeping bub.</p> <p>Pearce’s fellow Wiggles members congratulated the couple, who have been married since 2019.</p> <p>“Congratulations John and Jess. So happy for you both and can’t wait to meet Henry. Lots of love,” Red Wiggle Simon Pryce said.</p> <p>“Beautiful boy welcome to the world! Whoopi Goldberg reveals birth name

<p>Whoopi Goldberg has surprised <em>The View </em>audiences by revealing her birth name. </p> <p>On Monday’s episode of the US daytime talk show, the co-hosts debated the necessity of a new platform that can tell house hunters in the US the political affiliations of their potential neighbours. </p> <p>While they were discussing the topic, Whoopi casually dropped her real birth name, with viewers wondering if they'd heard her correctly. </p> <p>Whoopi made it clear that she was against the start-up, saying: “That is not a good idea because number one, it’s none of your business, and number two, it just fosters more division." </p> <p>Co-host Sunny Hostin said: “I have a multiracial family, my goddaughter is gay, some of my best friends are trans. I wouldn’t want to live next to an extremist that would make my family feel unwelcome.”</p> <p>She then clarified, “But I don’t think that’s a political affiliation thing. I think it’s a behavioural thing.”</p> <p>Goldberg added that there's been a shift in recent years with more people openly talking about their political affiliations. </p> <p>“I was raised, you never asked anybody how they were voting. I would say, ‘Ma, who are you going to vote for?’ and she’d just give me that look. And she’d say to me, ‘Caryn, that’s nobody’s business,’” she recalled.</p> <p>Whoopi’s birth name is actually Caryn - pronounced ‘Karen'.</p> <p>When asked why she changed it, Goldberg replied in an old interview: “Here’s the thing. When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. Acclaimed musician dies after cancer diagnosis

<p>Acclaimed Melbourne musician Dean Sky-Lucas has tragically died just days after he was rushed to hospital for the removal of a stomach ulcer.</p> <p>Sky-Lucas was a singer, accompanist, lecturer and multi-instrumentalist who performed with several orchestras in Melbourne and Tasmania.</p> <p>The musician took to Facebook on November 18th to tell his followers he was about to undergo surgery to remove the stomach ulcer, which is believed to be from an advanced cancer. </p> <p>Just 18 days later, a family member posted to his Facebook page to make the shocking announcement of the beloved singer’s death.</p> <p>“I am very sad to announce that our beloved Dean unexpectedly passed away today,” the post said.</p> <p>“His exact cause of death is uncertain but we do know that while he was still in hospital recovering from surgery he learned that he had advanced cancer.</p> <p>“I am so sorry to deliver this shocking news this way. Please send him your loving thoughts and prayers.”</p> <p>Sky-Lucas’ death has prompted a flood of tributes, as one friend wrote online, “Devastated. Beautiful man.”</p> <p>“Oh, I’m so shocked. Our lovely Dean. Such sorrowful news. The world will be less for his loss,” another wrote.</p> <p>Others remembered him for his musical talents, as one fan wrote, “Oh no, that’s so sad. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease, even after accounting for women living longer.</p> <p>The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease most commonly occur after the age of 65. However, changes in the brain begin decades before symptoms start. For women, this typically coincides with their transition to menopause.</p> <p>Menopause results from the body decreasing production of two hormones made by the ovaries: oestrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes are associated with a wide range of symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats, difficulties sleeping, reduced libido, mood changes and brain fog.</p> <p>Menopause hormonal therapy (also called hormone replacement therapy or HRT), including oestrogen alone or oestrogen combined with a progesterone, has been prescribed to help with menopausal symptoms for decades.</p> <p>But how does menopause hormone therapy affect the risk of dementia? And why do some studies say the therapy increases the risk, while others say it reduces it?</p> <h2>Hormones and the brain</h2> <p>A large body of pre-clinical (animal based) research shows oestrogen helps protect the brain. It reduces any damage to nerve cells and supports overall brain health.</p> <p>Receptors that respond to oestrogen are in areas of the brain related to reproductive functions. But they’re also in <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4491541/">areas of the brain</a> important for learning, memory and higher-order cognitive abilities such as planning, organisation and decision making.</p> <figure class="align-right "><figcaption></figcaption></figure> <p>The loss of the “neuroprotective” effects of oestrogen after menopause is thought to contribute to more cases of Alzheimer’s disease in women than men.</p> <p><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30928686/">Clinical studies</a> have also shown women who have a medical or surgical menopause before the age of natural menopause have a higher lifelong risk of dementia and cognitive impairment.</p> <p>This risk <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17761551/">appears to be reduced</a> in women who take oestrogen therapy after their surgery.</p> <p>This has led researchers to hypothesise that adding oestrogen back – via menopause hormone therapy – might protect and maintain women’s cognitive health.</p> <p>However, the research findings have not been consistent.</p> <h2>Could menopause hormone therapy impact dementia risk?</h2> <p>Concern about dementia risk and menopause hormone therapy have been partially driven by the unexpected findings from a landmark study conducted more than two decades ago.</p> <p>The <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/198994">findings showed</a> hormone therapy use in post-menopausal women, 65 years and older, was associated with an increased risk for dementia.</p> <p>However, these studies have some key limitations:</p> <p>1) most of the women were aged over 65 and more than ten years post-menopause</p> <p>2) the type of oestrogen and progestogen (a synthetic form of progesterone) used may have less benefit on brain health.</p> <p>The most recently published <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10625913/">systematic review and meta-analysis</a> of scientific data linking hormone therapy to the risk of Alzheimer’s disease included findings from 51 different reports that were published up to 2023.</p> <p>The results showed if hormone therapy was initiated in midlife, or more generally within ten  years of the final menstrual period, there was a decreased risk of later-life Alzheimer’s disease compared to women not using any hormone therapy.</p> <p>The greatest reduction in risk was associated with oestrogen-only hormone therapy.</p> <p>In contrast, when considering using hormone therapy in late-life, or more than ten  years after menopause, oestrogen-only therapy had a neutral effects on Alzheimer’s disease risk.</p> <p>However, oestrogen-progestogen therapy was associated with a risk increase.</p> <p>Only <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.1004435">one clinical trial</a> has been published since this meta-analysis. This study examined the long-term effects of menopause hormone therapy use initiated in early menopause.</p> <p>Women were on average aged 52.8 years and 1.5 years post-menopause when they entered this trial. They were randomly assigned to an oestrogen (with or without progestogen) or placebo for four years.</p> <p>Researchers followed 275 women up ten years later. They found no cognitive effects (no harm nor any benefit) based on whether women were exposed to 48 months of hormone therapy or a placebo.</p> <h2>What affects your risk?</h2> <p>It appears the effects of menopause hormone therapy on dementia risk are influenced by several factors. These include when someone starts taking it, how long they take it for, the type of hormones used, and the person’s genetic and health background.</p> <p><strong>1. When therapy starts: the critical window hypothesis</strong></p> <p>One key factor in determining the effect of menopause hormone therapy on cognitive function and the risk of dementia appears to be when therapy starts relative to menopause. This is called the “critical window hypothesis”.</p> <p>According to this hypothesis, oestrogen may help protect neurons in the brain only if started early in the menopause transition, particularly within a few years of menopause, when the brain may still be more responsive to hormones.</p> <p><strong>2. Type of menopause hormone therapy and the role of progesterone</strong></p> <p>The type of hormones included in hormone therapy can <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9964432/#sec6-ijms-24-03205">vary widely</a> in their molecular structure as well as their physiological actions.</p> <p>Different types of oestrogens (such as estradiol or conjugated oestrogen) and the inclusion of a progestogen (needed for women who have not undergone a hysterectomy) may have different impacts on brain health and dementia risk.</p> <p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091302224000402#s0055">Some studies</a> suggest adding a progestogen to oestrogen therapy could counteract some of the cognitive benefits of oestrogen alone, possibly by blocking oestrogen receptors in the brain.</p> <p><strong>3. The role of vasomotor symptoms</strong></p> <p>Vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats, are the hallmark of menopause. Experiencing more vasomotor symptoms has been <a href="https://journals.lww.com/menopausejournal/abstract/2008/15050/objective_hot_flashes_are_negatively_related_to.9.aspx">linked to poorer memory</a> as well as an <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37577812/">increase in biological markers</a> associated with dementia risk.</p> <p>Therefore, one possible pathway by which menopause hormone therapy may moderate Alzheimer’s disease risk is via their effects on reducing vasomotor symptoms.</p> <p><strong>4. An person’s genetic and health background</strong></p> <p>The greatest genetic risk factor for older-onset Alzheimer’s disease is carrying one or more copies of a specific version of the APOE gene, called APOE e4.</p> <p>There is an <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36218064/">emerging hypothesis</a> that women who have this genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease may show the greatest benefit from using hormone therapy.</p> <h2>What does this mean for you?</h2> <p>The clinical and scientific community are still debating whether menopause hormone therapy may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease risk.</p> <p>Overall, the decision to use hormone therapy should be individualised, taking into account your age and timing of menopause, health status and specific menopause symptoms.</p> <p>We need more research before we can make clear decisions about the role of hormone therapy and dementia risk, but based on the current evidence, hormone therapy may be beneficial if started early in the menopause transition, particularly for women at genetic risk of Alzheimer’s disease.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Aussies reminded to look out for this lifesaving roadside marker

<p>Aussie drivers are being reminded about a little-known roadside marker that could save your life. </p> <p>As the holiday season approaches, drivers have been reminded of the purpose of the small green circles that appear on roadside reflector poles. </p> <p>"With the holiday period fast approaching, I wanted to remind residents about green reflectors," federal MP Colin Boyce wrote over the weekend. </p> <p>"You may have noticed some green reflectors on guide posts beside the road on some highways. These indicate that there is a safe place to pull off the road coming up soon so you can indicate your intentions early and be prepared," he said.</p> <p>The number of dots indicate the distance between you and the place you can pull over. Three dots mean that drivers are approximately 500 metres from a safe place to pull over, two means you're 250 metres away and one green circle appears just before the area. </p> <p>"The idea is from road safety advocate and B double truck driver Rod Hannifey, alerting drivers that there is a safe place to pull off the road coming up," the Queensland MP added.</p> <p>"While the idea was originally intended for long haul truck drivers all road users can use them."</p> <p>Many Aussies have shared their enthusiasm for the highway initiative, and how important it was for caravan and motorhome drivers especially. </p> <p>"A lot more people need to know about this. Especially people with caravans," one woman commented.</p> <p>"Would love this all over Australia! There's nothing worse than driving at night with a screaming baby in the back who wants a feed and not knowing if it's a safe place to pull over," another said.</p> <p>Others have shared that they hadn't noticed the markings or realise what it meant. </p> <p>"Have asked a few people recently if they knew what these reflectors stood for, and not one knew. First driver fined under new road rules

<p>The driver of a luxury car is believed to be the first person fined under new rules that requires high-powered vehicle owners to hold a special license.</p> <p>New legislation in South Australia came into force on December 1st this year that requires drivers of ultra high-powered vehicles (UHPV) to hold a U class licence.</p> <p>Drivers who flout the rules can be hit with six demerit points a maximum fine of $2,500 for the first offence, with the penalty for subsequent offences potentially leading to one year of imprisonment.</p> <p>On Monday, police in South Australia revealed a man driving a Lamborghini had been fined for allegedly breaching the new law on Sunday: the first day the legislation came into force.</p> <p>“About 7.30am on Sunday 1 December, police stopped a Lamborghini Huracan on Queensborough Ave, Hillcrest after noticing it was not bearing a rear number plate,” a South Australia Police spokesman wrote in a media release.</p> <p>“The officer identified the vehicle as being classed as an UHPV however checks on the man’s licence revealed that he did not have the required ‘U’ class licence endorsement."</p> <p>“A 36-year-old man from Evandale was issued with an expiation notice for driving with an expired licence for that class of vehicle.”</p> <p>The requirement for the licence was introduced following the death of Sophia Naismith, according to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.</p> <p>In 2019, Sophia Naismith, 15, and her friend were struck luxury Lamborghini after the luxury car mounted the kerb and hit the teenagers before crashing into a restaurant. </p> <p>The Naismiths campaigned for changes and they were introduced, with Attorney-General Kyam Maher saying: “If you drive an ultra high-powered vehicle, you need to go through training to have that accredited on your licence.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: South Australia Police</em></p>

<p>Frustrated staff at a Coles-owned bottle shop in Brisbane have taken matters into their own hands and retaliated against drivers flouting parking rules outside their store. </p> <p>Management at a First Choice Liquor Market store in Newstead have locked in cars taking advantage of the customer-only spaces. </p> <p>It is understood that some cars remain parked in the 15-minute spots for extended periods, sometimes overnight, despite signs saying that fines apply. </p> <p>A photo shared on Facebook showed a car with P-plates blocked in by a yellow bollard and note that read: "Due to you not adhering to the parking rules, your vehicle has been locked in by management and will be kept on record." </p> <p>"Please see First Choice management to discuss your options".</p> <p>A local woman who shared the photos said there "were at least two other cars locked in" when she was passing by this week. </p> <p>Locals were divided by the store's actions, but many supported their decision.</p> <p>"About time. Pub takes all the spaces," one said. "I’ve been there when the store opens and there have been no car spaces available".</p> <p>"Don’t park where you shouldn’t. It’s simple," another added. </p> <p>A third said it was "about bloody time" something was done about the parking. </p> <p>However, a few others had a more understanding approach, with one local saying that the limited parking in a large apartment complex across the road could be contributing to the limited parking. </p> <p>Another suggested the staff had gone too far, noting the importance of being able to "flee" in a hurry, particularly in violent situations. </p> <p>"The thought of their vehicle being blocked in by bollard, should an unthinkable situation arise, is horrific to think of," she said.</p> <p>"While I understand this would be frustrating for your shop, it could be putting someone’s life in danger — as another perspective to think of."</p> <p>Coles have responded to the management's actions explaining that their commitment to customers means  providing "parking and clear access to our stores."</p> <p>"The Newstead store carpark is owned by Coles and has signage throughout the carpark informing locals about parking time restrictions which are also painted on the parking bays," a Coles spokesperson told <em>Yahoo News</em>.</p> <p>"To ensure we are making our stores more accessible for customers, our store team may use its discretion to remind the community of the parking rules.”</p> <p><em>Images: Facebook</em></p>

A man scouring Google Earth found a mysterious scar in the Australian outback – and now scientists know what caused it

<div class="theconversation-article-body"> <p>By <a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/matej-lipar-1372667">Matej Lipar</a>, <em><a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/curtin-university-873">Curtin University</a></em></p> <p>Earlier this year, a caver was poring over satellite images of the Nullarbor Plain when he came across something unexpected: an enormous, mysterious scar etched into the barren landscape.</p> <p>The find intrigued scientists, including my colleagues and I. Upon closer investigation, we realised the scar was created by a ferocious tornado that no-one knew had occurred. We outline the findings in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1071/ES24023">new research</a> published today.</p> <p>Tornadoes are a known threat in the United States and elsewhere. But they also <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atmosres.2016.03.011">happen in Australia</a>.</p> <p>Without the power of technology, this remarkable example of nature’s ferocity would have gone unnoticed. It’s important to study the tornado’s aftermath to help us predict and prepare for the next big twister.</p> <h2>Australia’s tornado history</h2> <p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-05381-8">Tornadoes</a> are violent, spinning columns of air that drop from thunderstorms to the ground, bringing wind speeds often exceeding 200 kilometres an hour. They can cause massive destruction – uprooting trees, tearing apart buildings and throwing debris over large distances.</p> <p>Tornadoes have been reported on every continent except Antarctica. They most commonly occur in the Great Plains region of the United States, and in the north-east region of India–Bangladesh.</p> <p>The earliest tornado observed by settlers in Australia occurred in 1795 in the suburbs of Sydney. But a tornado was not confirmed here by Western scientists until the late 1800s.</p> <p>In recent decades, documented instances in Australia include a <a href="https://knowledge.aidr.org.au/resources/tornado-murray-river-townships-victoria-2013/#:%7E:text=Tornado%20%2D%20Murray%20River%20townships%2C%202013&text=At%20approximately%208.00pm%20on,border%20of%20New%20South%20Wales.">2013 tornado</a> that crossed north-east Victoria and travelled up to the New South Wales border. It brought winds between 250–300 kilometres an hour and damaged Murray River townships.</p> <p>And in 2016, a severe storm produced <a href="https://theconversation.com/severe-thunderstorms-are-sweeping-through-southern-australia-but-what-makes-a-thunderstorm-severe-241555#:%7E:text=In%202016%2C%20huge%20rotating%20supercell,after%20taking%20down%20six%20towers.">at least seven tornadoes</a> in central and eastern parts of South Australia.</p> <p>It’s important for scientists to accurately predict tornadoes, so we can issue warnings to communities. That’s why the Nullarbor tornado scar was useful to study.</p> <h2>A whirlwind mystery</h2> <p>The Nullarbor Plain is a remote, dry, treeless stretch of land in southern Australia. The man who discovered the scar had been using Google Earth satellite imagery to search the Nullabor for <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-24267-0_11">caves</a> or other karst features.</p> <p>Karst is a landscape underlain by limestone featuring distinctive landforms. The discovery of the scar came to the attention of my colleagues and I through the collaborative network of researchers and explorers who study the Nullarbor karst.</p> <p>The scar stretches from Western Australia over the border to South Australia. It lies 20 kilometres north of the <a href="https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/resources/trans-australian-railway">Trans-Australian Railway</a> and 90 kilometres east-north-east of Forrest, a former railway settlement.</p> <p>We compared satellite imagery of the site over several years to determine that the tornado occurred between November 16 and 18, 2022. It bears striking patterns called “cycloidal marks”, formed by tornado suction vortexes. This suggests the tornado was no ordinary storm but in the strong <a href="https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/19720008829">F2 or F3</a> category, spinning with destructive winds of more than 200 kilometres an hour.</p> <p>The tornado probably lasted between seven and 13 minutes. Features of the scar suggest the whirling wind within the tornado was moving in a clockwise direction. But it left its mark nonetheless, eroding soil and vegetation and reshaping the Earth’s surface.</p> <p>Remarkably, the scar was still clearly visible 18 months after the event, both in satellite images and on the ground. This is probably because vegetation grows slowly in this dry landscape, so hadn’t yet covered the erosion.</p> <h2>Predict and prepare</h2> <p>This fascinating discovery on the Nullarbor Plain shows how powerful and unpredictable nature can be – sometimes without us knowing.</p> <p>Only three tornadoes have previously been documented on the Nullarbor Plain. This is likely because the area is remote with few eye-witnesses, and because the events do not damage properties and infrastructure. Interestingly, those three tornadoes occurred in November, just like this one.</p> <p>Our research provides valuable insights into the tornadoes in this remote and little-studied region. It helps us understand when, and in what conditions, these types of tornadoes occur.</p> <p>It also emphasises the importance of satellite imagery in identifying and analysing weather phenomena in remote locations, and in helping us predict and prepare for the next big event.</p> <p>And finally, the results are a stark reminder that extreme weather can strike anywhere, anytime.</p> <hr /> <p><em>Hero Image: Author supplied/Google Earth</em></p> <p><em>This article has been amended to clarify that a reference to early tornado observations relates only to the period after British colonisation.</em><!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "Two strikes and you're out": Crackdown on dodgy taxi drivers

<p>The NSW government is introducing tougher penalties for taxi drivers caught ripping off passengers, as they crackdown on dodgy practices. </p> <p>Taxi drivers caught committing two fare-related offences will be disqualified from driving a taxi, rideshare or any other type of transport from December 6. </p> <p>The offences include not using their meter, overcharging, refusing a passenger travelling a short distance, demanding a fare not displayed on the meter, adding a surcharge and charging a maxi-taxi surcharge for less than five passengers. </p> <p>Transport Minister Jo Haylen emphasised that the "two strikes and you're out" system would be used to crack down on a “minority of rogue drivers” in the industry, ahead of the holiday season. </p> <p>"We're sending a strong message to the minority of rogue drivers that if they continue overcharging, not using the meter or refusing fares they now risk being kicked out of the industry," Haylen said.</p> <p>"From 6 December, drivers convicted twice for fare-related offences will not only be disqualified from the taxi industry but also rideshare companies like Uber and DiDi.</p> <p>"With these better regulations in place, passengers can have a safe and fair ride, while supporting the taxi industry.</p> <p>“This is a really busy time for the taxi and rideshare industries. Christmas parties are starting to kick off, people will be starting to come home through the airport, and then there are people rushing around for those last-minute gifts,” she added. </p> <p>"The majority of our state's 15,000 taxi drivers are doing the right thing, but these new measures will ensure that those who aren't, are out."</p> <p>The laws will also apply to Taxi drivers with existing breaches on record, who will now be at risk of being banned from the industry by the Point to Point Transport Commissioner Anthony Wing.</p> <p>More than 900 fines have been issued to taxi drivers by commissioner inspectors in the last two years. </p> <p>"Let me reinforce, most drivers are consistently doing the right thing, but we want all passengers to know that there will be harsh consequences for drivers who continue to break the rules - they now face being kicked out of the industry," Wing said.</p> <p>"We take all fare-related offences seriously which is why my Inspectors are frequently out conducting plain clothes operations along with highly visible compliance activities."</p> <p>He added that "small time first offenders" would not necessarily be prosecuted but issued a fine instead of a strike. </p> <p><em>Image: Shutterstock</em></p>

Australia Post wants to charge more for stamps next year. Here’s why it has to keep letters alive

If you haven’t used the postal service recently, you might be in for a rude shock.</p> <p>Late last week, it was announced Australia Post had notified the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) of a proposal to increase the price of stamps.</p> <p>If ultimately approved by Communications Minister Michelle Rowland, the current basic postage rate for a small letter, $1.50, would <a href="https://auspost.com.au/disruptions-and-updates/pricing-updates/bpr-letter-pricing-update">rise</a> to $1.70 by mid-2025. Stamps for regular large and priority small letters would go from $2.20 up to $2.70.</p> <p>There would still be a discounted option for seasonal greetings cards, which would remain at 65 cents.</p> <p>If you’re feeling a sense of déjà vu, that’s because the last basic postage rate <a href="https://minister.infrastructure.gov.au/rowland/media-release/decision-basic-postage-rate">increase</a> to $1.50 only just came into effect earlier this year.</p> <p>Like physical cash, letters have arguably been in terminal decline. According to Australia Post, <a href="https://newsroom.auspost.com.au/proposed-stamp-price-increase-as-letters-losses-mount">fewer than 3%</a> of letters are now sent by individuals. The rest are overwhelmingly business and government communications.</p> <p>But for some key groups, the “snail mail” remains a vital service. So why do we need to keep letters alive, and will increasing the price of stamps be enough to do so?</p> <h2>A duty to serve all Australians</h2> <p>As a publicly owned organisation, Australia Post has a range of formal community service obligations (CSOs). These are <a href="https://www.transparency.gov.au/publications/communications-and-the-arts/australian-postal-corporation/australia-post-annual-report-2022-23/other-important-information/community-service-obligations">enshrined in legislation</a> – the Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989.</p> <p>These CSOs were set up to ensure essential postal services are accessible and affordable to all Australians, including those in regional, rural and remote areas.</p> <p>They include providing a universal access to a standard letter service at a uniform price across the country, as well as specific obligations on the frequency, range and speed of mail delivery.</p> <p>Since 2015, Australia Post has been lobbying to reform its community service obligations to <a href="https://www.afr.com/markets/equity-markets/australia-post-posts-222m-loss-letter-posting-in-terminal-decline-20150925-gjup78">better align</a> with changed consumer behaviour and needs.</p> <p>That has led to some changes in what’s expected, including a range of <a href="https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/postal-services-modernisation-discussion-paper.pdf">reforms</a> implemented by the Australian government over the past year.</p> <p>These have included <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-12/auspost-to-halve-letter-delivery-frequency-from-monday/103699458">reducing delivery frequency</a> for letters and reallocating resources to parcel delivery, while still maintaining essential services in regional and remote areas and for special interest groups.</p> <p>We are clearly in a broader transition to new CSOs – and a new role for Australia Post. Much of that comes down to the difficulty of delivering letters.</p> <h2>The long decline of letters</h2> <p>In the last financial year, Australia Post’s letter volumes <a href="https://newsroom.auspost.com.au/proposed-stamp-price-increase-as-letters-losses-mount">fell</a> by almost 13%, which the company said led to a loss of $361.8 million.</p> <p>But this is nothing new. From a peak in 2008, letter delivery volumes have been <a href="https://minister.infrastructure.gov.au/rowland/media-release/ensuring-australia-post-can-deliver-more-australians">plummeting</a> for more than a decade.</p> <figure class="align-right "><figcaption></figcaption></figure> <p>Australia Post <a href="https://newsroom.auspost.com.au/proposed-stamp-price-increase-as-letters-losses-mount">says</a> they’re now at levels not seen since the 1950s. Remember, in 1955, the Australian population was only 9.2 million people.</p> <p>Parallels with declining cash usage highlight our aversion to doing things with paper.</p> <p>Cash use in Australia has also fallen to historic lows, forcing the government to step in with a plan to <a href="https://theconversation.com/businesses-will-have-to-accept-cash-for-essentials-under-government-plan-243899">keep it alive for essentials</a>.</p> <h2>All or nothing</h2> <p>A key conundrum is that we can’t keep letters half-alive. For all Australians to be able post letters on a scheduled basis with fast delivery requires Australia Post to maintain a complete letter network across the entire nation.</p> <p>The overall costs of operating this – while not specifically itemised publicly – include maintaining delivery routes and retail outlets, paying employee wages and investing in infrastructure.</p> <p>Naturally, increasing the cost of sending letters will discourage businesses from doing so, shrinking the market ever more.</p> <p>But because the size of the mail delivery network does not shrink proportionately, this can cause outsize problems for Australia Post.</p> <p>Australia is not unique. Postal services around the world have felt <a href="https://www.upu.int/en/publications/physical-postal-services/strategies-and-ways-for-developing-the-traditional-letterpost-documents-market">similar pressures</a>, many of which have diversified into parcel logistics and offering other digital services.</p> <h2>Could we just lose letters?</h2> <p>There are three core demographics in Australian society that still need to send and receive physical mail. These are:</p> <ul> <li> <p>older Australians, particularly those who are less familiar with or have limited access to digital platforms</p> </li> <li> <p>residents of regional and remote areas with limited internet connectivity</p> </li> <li> <p>concessional users for whom discounted mail is the most affordable form of important communications.</p> </li> </ul> <p>At the very least, these groups all need to have a guaranteed ability to send and receive official information. That includes bank statements, legal notices, utility bills and government correspondence, such as electoral information.</p> <p>Less critical, but still socially important and likely not to be terminated, is delivery of cards and letters for personal milestones, holidays or other events.</p> <p>That puts Australia Post in a tricky position. It likely cannot maintain such large mail delivery infrastructure unless it does so at increasing losses.</p> <p>That also reduces its ability to provide other, more relevant services and can blunt its competitiveness in the parcel delivery market.</p> <h2>Letters as small parcels</h2> <p>For Australia Post, one solution may lie in leveraging its <a href="https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/2024-australia-post-annual-report.pdf">thriving</a> parcels delivery network.</p> <p>Given the essential user base for mail delivery is now so small, it makes sense for letters to be “special” delivery services, much as courier document services are now. Parcel home delivery resources could take this mail the last mile.</p> <p>This would be much more expensive per item for Australia Post. But if the market continued to decrease in volume, it would minimise total costs.</p> <p>It would also allow the government to provide a targeted subsidy if required.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Mum appeals "incorrect" $410 seatbelt fine

<p>April Miller and her husband had been visiting family in the Blue Mountains last month when the new detection cameras flagged her for not wearing her seatbelt properly. </p> <p>The Sydney mum argued otherwise, saying that the couple clearly had their seatbelts on and they were incorrectly fined. </p> <p>“We came back to a fine in the mail (claiming) our seatbelts weren’t on correctly,” she told <em>7NEWS</em>.</p> <p>“In the corner you can clearly see that we have our seatbelts on, both of us.</p> <p>“If you’ve broken the law, you’ve broken the law, but if you haven’t and there’s no reason for it, then that is frustrating.”</p> <p>She has since appealed the $410 fine and three demerit points, and while her first appeal was denied, it is not stopping her from trying again. </p> <p>The seatbelt detection cameras were implemented on July 1 this year, with the intention of saving lives, as 15 per cent of deaths on NSW roads each year involve seatbelt noncompliance. </p> <p>Shadow Transport Minister Natalie Ward said, “if the seatbelt was on, then the fine should be repaid”.</p> <p>“Fining motorists who do the right thing is unacceptable because it reduces community confidence.”</p> <p>Transport for NSW Centre for Road Safety executive director Bernard Carlon told <em>7NEWS</em> that “although the AI works to identify whether there is an offence that has been committed, there are two human reviews that happen after that” before an infringement is issued. </p> <p>“There can always be human error and we want to have a system that’s fair.”</p> <p>In just five months since the implementation of the cameras,  50,000 fines have been handed out.</p> <p>Fines for not wearing seatbelts have plummeted from more than 16,500 in July to about 9,800 in October.</p> <p>“There’s a massive reduction in the number of people offending, that’s really good,” Carlon said.</p> <p><em>Image: 7NEWS</em></p>

<p>Molly the Magpie is at risk of being separated from his rescue family again after a special wildlife carers licence was overturned in court this week. </p> <p>Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen had rescued the bird when he fell from a nest in 2020. The couple and their two dogs, Peggy and Ruby, have since formed a special relationship with the magpie who now lives with them. </p> <p>Molly's unlikely friendship with the two staffordshire terriers quickly became an internet sensation, but after complaints that the couple did not have the appropriate licences to look after the magpie, she was surrendered to Queensland wildlife authorities in March. </p> <p>After receiving pressure from the public and some politicians, the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) “approved a specialised licence” and returned Molly to the couple almost two months after the bird had been surrendered. </p> <p>The licence was granted on the condition that the couple would not make commercial gain from Molly, continue wildlife training and engage with the department  to “ensure the bird is receiving adequate care and enrichment”.</p> <p>However, on Monday the Supreme Court had overturned the granting of the specialised licenced, following a judicial review. </p> <p>Legal firm XD Law & Advocacy sought the judicial review on behalf of an unnamed wildlife volunteer representing a network of volunteers who work to care for injured and rescued birds.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; There is nothing cute about seeing a domesticated magpie ferociously attacked by a wild flock when they first interact.</p> <p>“We are not commenting at all on what should be done with Molly — we will not be exposing our members to that violence and abuse again.”</p> <p>Following the court decision, a DETSI spokesperson said in a statement: “In trying to protect the welfare of the bird — which has always been our highest priority — we made an error, and we are currently considering next steps."</p> <p>Image: Instagram</p>
