"No disrespect": Home and Away star's swipe at Robert Irwin's Logie nomination

Home and Away veteran Lynne McGranger has taken a savage swipe at Robert Irwin, who has earned his first Gold Logie nomination.

The young wildlife warrior is among a group of Aussie TV old-hands in the running for the 2024 Gold Logie, with the 20-year-old being the youngest male ever nominated for the award.

Also battling it out for the Gold is Larry Emdur, Andy Lee, Asher Keddie, Julia Morris, Sonia Kruger, and ABC's Tony Armstrong.

The nomination comes hot on the heels of Irwin's TV debut as co-host of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! alongside Julia Morris, as he took over from Dr Chris Brown for the 2024 season.

After Robert's nomination was announced, despite how well the new season of I'm A Celeb was received, many wondered how someone with so little TV experience could find himself in the running for the award.

One of those skeptics was Home and Away actress Lynne McGranger, who made a cheeky swipe towards Robert when commenting in support of her Channel Seven colleague Larry Emdur who is up for the award for the first time.

"I'm sorry but ol'mate Irwin has been on telly for a bloody minute!! No disrespect intended. #Lazforgold 🫶🏾🥇😍" she wrote on Larry's Instagram post, with over 300 people liking the comment.

The comment came after Larry shared a screenshot of a message he was sent, with someone congratulating him on the nomination but telling him they'd be voting for Irwin.

Lynne's rogue comment was met with mainly support from people.

"You said what everyone is thinking," one person said. "I agree 💯 #Lazforgold all the way! No disrespect intended for Irwin … Larry has my vote 🙌 he truly deserves to win 🥇," another commented.

"You have my first vote ever today, only for you Larry, for the laughter that lights up my life!" another dedicated fan said.

Lynne's comments weren't the first time someone called out Robert's nomination, after sister Bindi Irwin was quick to tease on Instagram.

Bindi took to social media to share a cheeky throwback post of her clutching her own Silver Logie in 2008, for Most Popular New Female Talent for her work in Bindi the Jungle Girl.

“Hey Australia, vote for my awesome brother so he can catch up to me 16 years later …” she captioned the post.

"At least mine's gold," Robert teased, to which Bindi replied "You haven't won it yet..." alongside a laughing emoji.

Veteran Seven reporter sacked over misconduct allegations

A veteran reporter for Channel Seven has been sacked amid allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Robert Ovadia, a Sydney-based reporter who has been with the network for 23 years, announced that he has been fired in a statement to The Australian.

“Yes I’ve been sacked and there will be more to say about that in the appropriate forum at the appropriate time,” Ovadia told the publication on Friday.

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for the Seven Network told NCA Newswire that Ovadia was "on leave".

“Seven is conducting an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Robert Ovadia,” the spokeswoman confirmed.

In his own statement at the time, Mr Ovadia said he would defend the “malicious” allegations.

“Seven has told me no current or former colleague has made any complaint against me,” he said in a statement to the ABC.

“As far as I am aware, I have not been stood down by the company. Any suggestion I have behaved inappropriately at any time is false, malicious and will be defended.”

Just days after being placed on leave, The Australian revealed that the allegations stem from emails exchanged four years ago between Ovadia and a former Seven female employee.

Ovadia’s sacking comes amid an exit of numerous senior males at Seven in the past month and following the appointment of Anthony De Ceglie as Seven West Media’s new director of news and current affairs and editor-in-chief.

Pauline Hanson responds to Robert Irwin's defamation claims

Pauline Hanson's lawyers have slammed Robert Irwin's “nonsensical”, after he threatened to take legal action against the politician over the latest controversial episode of her Youtube series Please Explain.

The satirical cartoon, features Irwin's misadventures with Bluey as they attempt to promote a new tourism campaign for Queensland.

In the video, their car was stolen by "juvenile delinquents" before Bluey falls into a giant pothole, and then they had to wait six months for healthcare.

Irwin's lawyers alleged that the cartoon was defamatory and involved the “unauthorised and deceptive use of our client’s image”, and demanded them to remove it from social media by 5pm Monday.

However, the politician has ignored their threats of taking legal action, with her lawyers responding that the video was a “satirical assessment of the various failings of the Queensland State Government” and that it was not defamatory in any way.

They said that the video, which referenced a recent tourism campaign Irwin was in, was “a humorous critique of that advertisement published primarily for a political purpose”.

“Your clients’ claims of passing off and defamation are so plainly inconsistent as to be nonsensical," they wrote in a letter addressed to Irwin's lawyers.

“It is difficult to comprehend how a viewer could understand that the video represents an affiliation with your client if he is also being defamed in the same publication.”

Hanson also insisted that she would not take down the video.

“I will not be removing the latest episode of Pauline Hanson’s Please Explain,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“I look forward to the day when Robert and I can have a good laugh over this and turn our focus to making Queensland a better state.”

Image: Instagram/ X/ Getty

Robert Irwin threatens to sue Pauline Hanson over "defamatory" cartoon

Robert Irwin has threatened to sue One Nation leader Pauline Hanson for defamation.

In the latest episode of Pauline Hanson's cartoon series Please Explain, Irwin claimed that he was mocked after it depicted him and Bluey promoting a new tourism campaign for Queensland.

The episode satirically depicted Irwin attempting to show Bluey the best of Queensland, but mocked the state's housing crisis, youth crime, and health care.

At one point in the cartoon, the pair mistake a long queue for a rental property for a line at Movie World.

FC Lawyers, who are acting on behalf of the wildlife conservationist, have sent a cease and desist letter to StepMates Studios, the production team behind Pauline Hanson’s cartoon series.

In the letter obtained by NewsWire, Irwin's lawyer claimed that the cartoon is defamatory and involves the “unauthorised and deceptive use of our client’s image”.

“You are potentially liable to our client in respect of defamation, deceptive use of a person’s image, passing off and misleading and deceptive conduct,” the letter sates.

“We will commence legal action against you if you do not take down the video immediately.”

The letter also claims that the cartoon tarnished Irwin's reputation and misled the public, causing “significant harm to our client’s brand and image”.

“We are concerned that the unlawful use of our client’s image may be an attempt to pass off yourself or party as currently being affiliated or otherwise authorised by us, which you are not,” it continues.

“This unlawful use has the potential to mislead or deceive consumers into believing that you have.

“The use of our client’s image and name on the video is capable of leading not an insignificant number of reasonable and/or ordinary people into erroneously believing that the Pauline Hanson is associated with Robert.”

Some people have defended Irwin's move, saying: "It is Pauline Hanson who is the politician and she has a record of trying to sue others when offended."

"She likes to dish it out but can’t take it which will cost her at the ballot box!"

"What about when Pauline Hanson threatened legal action over Pauline Pantsdown," another added.

However, a few others have called him a "snowflake" and told him to "grow up".

"Your dad would [have] had a good laugh at Pauline's cartoon. Grow up, stop being a snowflake!" one person wrote on X.

"Robert Irwin is very thin skinned he needs a laugh," another added.

Images: news.com.au/ Instagram/ Getty

Robert Irwin called “hypocrite” over new TV ad appearance

Robert Irwin has faced some backlash online after appearing in a new TV ad for a classic Aussie snack.

The star appeared alongside G-Flip in an ad for Twisties, where the pair argued over what flavour should be crowned Australia’s official Twistie.

In the ad, Robert advocated for Aussies to vote for the chicken flavour, while G-Flip advocated for the cheese flavour.

“To my chookstituants. I say chicken is the people’s Twistie. Sure, cheese came first but secondborns were made to perfection, sorry Bindi,” Robert said in the ad.

“Chicken has always been the taste of our great southern land.”

Robert also posted the TV ad on his Instagram with the caption: “Repping Team Chicken in Twisties great flavour debate was not on my 2024 bingo card! But when Twisties calls, you answer. So let’s bring it home for chicken and prove team cheese wrong!”

Unfortunately, it didn't get a good response from fans, with many calling the star a "hypocrite" for advocating a meat-based product despite being an animal activist.

“This has really surprised me and I’m a little disappointed! With all the knowledge we have now of the c**p that goes into food like this, and of all people, I never thought I’d see this,” one person wrote.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

“For someone who loves animals it surprises me he’d be for either of these products who abuse and torture living beings,” another added.

“Why are pushing for chicken if you are such an animal lover? Doctors at war

In the annals of military history, the valour and sacrifices of doctors who served alongside soldiers in combat zones often go unrecognised. Yet their stories, as retired colonel Robert Likeman poignantly illustrates in his Australian Doctors at War series, reveal a legacy of courage and commitment that is integral to understanding the full scope of wartime heroism.

---

Winston Churchill, in his Sketches on Service During the Indian Frontier Campaign of 1897, wrote, “The spectacle of a doctor in action among soldiers, in equal danger and with equal courage, saving life where others are taking it, allaying pain where all others are causing it, is one which must always seem glorious, whether to God or man”.

It is certainly true that doctors in a combat zone share the risks of shot and shell equally with the fighting soldier, but they also experience the added stress of taking responsibility for those wounded and dying on the battlefield, and in situations where the best of treatment cannot be readily given.

Glorious or otherwise, the stories of our Australian Army doctors at war remain relatively unrecognised. Doctors have always been among the first to volunteer – in all 1,242 doctors served with the first Australian Imperial Force, careless for their own safety, and 55 of them failed to return. These men represented a significant proportion of the medical workforce in Australia, which by 1937 only reached 5,000. In World War 2, with the introduction of compulsory military service, the number of serving doctors exceeded 2,500. Hardly any of them are still with us today, but their children and grandchildren are our fellow citizens, and in many cases our local doctor may be one of these. It is a legacy not to be dismissed lightly.

Those who have served in the Army know that treating the ailments of soldiers and preserving their health occupies much more time than dressing their wounds. In World War 1, fought over the agricultural lands of Europe, infectious diseases such as gas gangrene, tetanus and trench fever were common. In the deserts of World War 2, these were replaced by hepatitis, sandfly fever and eye infections. New Guinea presented a wholly different spectrum of disease, dominated by malaria, scrub typhus and amoebic dysentery. The maintenance of “fighting fitness” was a daily struggle for the doctors.

The 2021 Interim Report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide did not identify medical officers as being particularly at risk of psychological injury as a result of their service in a war zone. But in view of their exposure to mass trauma and death, they might be assumed to have a significant risk of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, both from the chances of being wounded or killed, and from the guilt associated with the failure to preserve life. Two of the medical officers who served at Gallipoli shot themselves on their return to Egypt, perhaps because they had seen men die who might have been saved with better medical attention. Fourteen other doctors from the 1st Australian Imperial Force are known to have committed suicide after their return to Australia.

Close to 3,000 Australian nurses served overseas with the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War 1, but female doctors were not permitted to enlist. A significant number of them however, at least 19, served in the British Army or in voluntary hospitals in Europe. One of them, Phoebe Chapple, was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery. In World War 2, 22 women doctors were commissioned in total – moreso due to the shortage of manpower than from egalitarian principles – though none of them were posted overseas. In recent overseas deployments, women doctors in the Army have quite properly taken their rightful place.

The military service and civilian practice of all the Australian doctors who served in both World Wars has been meticulously documented in my six-volume series, Australian Doctors at War, published by Halstead Press. Your relatives may be among them.

The Inevitable Hour is the sixth and final volume of my Australian Doctors at War series, covering the period from January 1943 to the disbanding of the Second Australian Imperial Force in April 1947. Even after the Japanese had been driven from Papua and New Guinea, they still retained most of the archipelago. The threat to Australia was great, and despite being a then small nation, the country mobilised quickly to disrupt Japanese holdings in Madang, Wewak and Wau. Overcoming the constant influx of wounded men needing treatment, suffering themselves from afflictions such as hepatitis, dysentery and depression, aggravated by extreme and tropical climates, Australia’s medical officers were under considerable pressure, during the war and in the monumental demobilisation of the 2nd AIF that followed Japanese defeat.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Robert Likeman is a graduate of Oxford University, where he studied Classics, Oriental Languages and Medicine. He is a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, in tropical medicine, and in rural and remote medicine. After service in the British Army he migrated to Australia in 1972. He is the author of seven books of military history and two biographies, and co-author of a textbook of obstetrics and gynaecology for doctors practising in developing countries.

Images courtesy of Robert Likeman.

Robert Irwin received rave reviews for his co-hosting skills alongside Julia Morris on this year's I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here, but an insider has claimed that he won't be returning for another season.

"His easygoing and faultless live TV skills have won over the nation. But his career at Ten will only be short-lived, and he is heading back to Seven," a source told Woman's Day.

The negotiation is believed to have been orchestrated by the ultimate "mumager" Terri Irwin.

"The Irwins are very smart when it comes to negotiations," the insider added.

The source also claimed that Robert's decision to join I'm a Celebrity was seen as a one-off opportunity to elevate his television profile - which he has achieved after bringing fresh energy into the show.

Channel Seven is reportedly keen to welcome Robert back with a massive deal, according to the source.

"Seven want Robert back and have thrown a king's ransom at him," they said.

If the deal goes through, Julia Morris will have to find a new partner to head to the jungle with.

Many fans have praised Robert for bringing some fun into the jungle.

"I have not ever been keen on watching this show but Robert you have brought some class and good honest fun to the jungle. Thank you," one fan wrote under a clip of the show's grand finale that Robert posted on his Instagram.

"How awesome was Robert? This gig was like it was made for him. What a natural," another added.

"Best year of I'm a Celebrity, and it was because you added something to the show as Co-Host. Brilliant job for somebody with no experience but with a lot to give," commented a third.

Images: Instagram

Kyle Sandilands lashes out at Robert Irwin

Kyle Sandilands has let rip at Robert Irwin, after the young wildlife warrior was crowned Australia's Top Broadcast Talent.

In a survey conducted by Lewers Research, 7,000 Aussies were quizzed over their attitudes towards top Australian celebrities, actors, broadcasters, and others.

Irwin was named Australia's Top Broadcast Talent, beating out last year's winner, Hamish Blake, as well as Andy Lee, Dr Chris Brown, Ally Langdon and Natalie Barr, to name just a few.

The 20-year-old I'm a Celeb co-host also came out on top in the Top 10 Male Talent list.

"We were excited to see Robert Irwin top the Talent Index for the very first time. It demonstrates that he is significantly more liked than disliked by audiences nationally," Talent Corp Managing Director Mark Noakes.

"That makes him a great choice for Network 10 to cast him in the forthcoming series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!"

Clearly unhappy with Irwin's victory, Kyle Sandilands was quick to slam the decision to crown the wildlife warrior, sharing his anger with the listeners of the Kyle and Jackie O Show.

"The b**** has done nothing. It’s a sympathy vote," he said.

Sandilands, who was named the most controversial broadcaster in the survey, then poked fun at co-host Jackie O, who scored 59 out of 100 on the "likability" scale.

"You're liked? I find that hard to understand," he joked.

Despite the radio host's protests, Irwin shared how honoured he was to be named Australia's Top Broadcast Talent, taking to social media to thank his fans for always supporting him.

"Wow, it’s a real honour to officially be named Australia’s most popular broadcast personality," he said on Instagram.

"I’m here to spread important messages and a bit of positivity with the world, so this commendation means so much. I’m humbled and grateful."

“I’ve got to change this”: The one big fix Robert Irwin is bringing to the jungle

Robert Irwin has shared the one big change he insisted on after he joined the cast of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

The wildlife warrior spoke to Kyle and Jackie O about how he demanded for the show to ditch the eating of native animals for challenges.

In past seasons, the show has used body parts of native African animals in challenges for contestants to eat in exchange for prizes and advantages.

After agreeing to host the show alongside Julia Morris, the 20-year-old insisted the rule was changed.

“The one thing that I was like, ‘Mmm, I’ve got to change this’, was eating the African wildlife…I’m a conservationist at heart,” he said on Tuesday morning when dropping by The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

“They have changed it so we’re just doing the cow, and the chicken, and the fish, and the cockroach,” he revealed of the change of challenge menu.

Morris said she supported her new co-host’s efforts to stop any consumption of African wildlife on the show.

“I think what Robert’s been doing is making people think, ‘Do you need it or not?’ Like if you need it, tell me why you need the wildlife in a place like that?” Morris explained.

“And if it doesn’t matter and it was just something that was nice in Africa from Series 1, then we don’t need it – just get a cow!”

Irwin added, “Africa’s got such amazing wildlife, and it’s about celebrating it”.

Elsewhere in the interview, the young conservationist reflected on the time he first visited the South African set of I’m A Celeb when he was just 10 years old alongside his mum Terri and sister Bindi.

“I just kind of got dropped in there with my family and spent the day in there and it was awesome. Since then, it’s been on my radar, I’ve been a fan of the show and I just thought it’s such an amazing thing I was awe-struck, I just loved it. Coming back as a host, is the craziest thing,” he said.

Robert Irwin's favourite Aussie holiday spot

Robert Irwin is a Queenslander through and through, and despite all the attractions and things to do in his hometown, the young conservationist is surprisingly a huge fan of Tasmania.

When asked what his favourite destination was, Irwin said that it was a "very tough question" but narrowed it down to two spots: North Queensland and Tasmania.

“I know what you’re thinking – two of the most polar opposite places, but they both have such rugged and raw natural beauty,” Irwin told news.com.au.

He added that Cradle Mountain, one of Tasmania's most iconic sights is one of his favourite spots and that it is a must-see destination.

“I also enjoy the Tasman Peninsula, Launceston, Swansea and the stunning Tarkine Wilderness just to name a few spots.”

In North Queensland, he lives up to his role as the son of 'The Crocodile Hunter' as he loves exploring the mangroves and estuaries.

“At a good distance away from the water’s edge of course,” he added.

“Surprisingly, Cairns also has some top-notch mountain biking, so if you love an adrenaline hit, it has got you covered.”

Irwin added that all Aussies need to explore the far north and far south at least once in their lives.

“To sum it all up, Tasmania has Tassie devils, and North Queensland has crocs. What more do you need,” he said.

The young conservationist will soon be heading to South Africa to film the newest season of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! as he replaced Dr Chris Brown as a co-host for the show.

He shared that he will definitely bring his own camera.

“We have supported wildlife conservation efforts there for many years and have spent so much time photographing the unique wildlife of South Africa,” he said.

“My new I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! hosting role will definitely give me the opportunity to further pursue my passion for photography.”

Images: Instagram

The funny reason Robert Irwin wants to hand over his citizenship

Robert irwin has joined in the global outrage of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig being snubbed from the Oscar nominations.

The wildlife warrior joined the panel of The Project on Wednesday night as a co-host of the show, where the conversation turned to the Aussie actress being snubbed by the Academy Awards.

On Wednesday morning, it was revealed that Margot Robbie didn’t receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in Barbie, and nor did Greta Gerwig for Best Director, despite the movie breaking records when it was released in July.

Around the world, Barbie fans shared their disgust in the snub, with Robert Irwin echoing their statements.

“That's ridiculous. Come on,” he began.

“[Director] Greta [Gerwig] and Margot made that movie. That's the reason why we have the Barbie movie, it's ridiculous.”

Co-host Waleed Aly then asked if Robert would be renouncing his American citizenship over the injustice and was shocked by his response.

“I think it only makes sense,” Robert said.

News of the snub went viral on Wednesday, with fans flocking to social media to share their thoughts.

One particular tweet went viral, with over 109 thousand likes.

"Ken getting nominated and not Barbie is honestly so fitting for a film about a man discovering the power of patriarchy in the Real World," the tweet read.

Ryan Gosling, who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken in the film, also shared a statement about the lack of recognition for the women he shared the screen with.

In a lengthy statement, he said, “I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honoured and proud that [the award] is for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”

“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

"I've lost complete blood flow": Robert Irwin's near miss with python

Young wildlife warrior Robert Irwin suffered a near miss during a rescue mission over the weekend, when he tried to relocate a carpet python off the road.

The 19-year-old took to Instagram on Sunday to share a video of him almost getting bit by the wild snake.

"Gee, that gets the heart rate up - he missed me by that much," he said when the snake struck at him.

"He's grumpy... he's really keen on biting me... what a gorgeous snake, he's big, he's not venomous but... they're designed to constrict," he said as the python began wrapping its body around his arm to ''constrict" him.

"He's got a good grip there, I've lost complete blood flow to my hand, it's completely blue.. and I have no feeling left in my hand," he added.

He eventually managed to rescue the snake, and relocated it to a safe spot in the bush the day after.

"Near miss! Definitely had a good laugh with this grumpy carpet python - but great to get him rescued off the road and relocated to a much safer spot!" he captioned the post.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

Fans shared their shock and couldn't help but comment on how much the young conservationist was like his late father, Steve Irwin.

"Dude you are killing us with these like-father-like-son bits," one fan wrote.

"Holy crap.
