Police officer sought in connection to disappearance of two men

A NSW police officer is sought in connection to the suspicious disappearance of two men, who haven't been heard from since Monday.

Former Studio 10 host Jesse Baird and his boyfriend Luke Davies were last seen four days ago, with police launching an investigation into their disappearance.

A number of their personal items, including a watch, clothes, credit cards and keys were found by a worker in Club Cronulla, with blood stains present on the items.

Police have also searched two homes during their investigation - one in Balmain and one in Paddington - with officers "immediately" establishing a crime scene at the Paddington home after finding blood spatters.

According to officers, a “significant” amount of blood consistent with a fatality and signs of a struggle were discovered inside Mr Baird’s Paddington home on Thursday afternoon.

More personal items belonging to the couple were recovered from a skip bin 20 kilometres from the home in question.

Police have called for Constable Beau Lamarre to come forward as part of their investigation, who is the ex-boyfriend of one of the men.

Friends of Baird have revealed he previously expressed concerns he was being stalked by another man.

Police confirmed on Thursday they wanted to speak to Constable Lamarre in relation to the case and were desperately trying to reach him.

"Following inquiries, detectives are looking at a line of inquiry that a third person may be able to assist with the investigation," NSW Police said, in a statement.

"Police are currently trying to locate him."

Police have not said that the officer was involved in the disappearance, only that they would like to speak to him, as no arrest warrant has been issued.

Kyle Sandilands storms out of studio after argument with Jackie O

Kyle Sandilands has stormed off his hit KIIS FM radio program after an argument with his co-host Jackie O Henderson over Covid-19.

Sandilands stormed off just 11 minutes into the show on Tuesday morning, after bringing up that NSW Premier Chris Minns had cancelled his appearance on their show after testing positive to the virus.

The argument sparked when Henderson downplayed the seriousness of the virus and said it was "just like the flu".

Sandilands hit back saying that Henderson would probably still isolate if she caught the virus, considering how cautious she was in the past.

"I'm allowed to change my opinion," Henderson shot back.

Sandilands then argued that she should have some "consistency" in her opinions, before declaring that he was going home and storming out of the studio.

"Well that escalated quickly," a stunned Henderson said.

Not long after their Executive producer Pedro Vitola confirmed that the radio host had gone home.

"What's happening today?" Henderson asked.

"I'm telling you this full moon, it messes with people," she added referring to what astrologers call the full moon in Gemini, which they believe is a period when people are a bit more restless and rife with misunderstandings.

It is unclear whether Henderson also went home as it is reported that the show has been playing repeats of old segments.

Images: Instagram/ KIIS FM

"It's a tough day": Studio 10 axed

After a decade on the air, Studio 10 has been axed by Channel Ten, with the staple morning show not returning for another season in 2024.

The announcement was made on the show's Instagram page by hosts Angela Bishop and Tristan MacManus to break the sad news to loyal viewers, while admitting it had been a "tough day" as they learned the show's fate.

"After an absolute epic decade on Australian TV screens, trying to put smiles on your faces every morning and love into your hearts, unfortunately we have some sad news for you today. Studio 10 will not be returning for 2024," McManus said.

“It’s a tough day for the whole Studio 10 family, because we have loved bringing you the show for the last 10 years,” said Bishop in the video.

“We’re all really proud to be part of it."

“To finish up, I’m going to pinch a quote: Don’t cry ‘cos it’s over, smile because it happened.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Studio 10 (@studio10au)

A Ten spokesperson said in a statement, “Studio 10 has been a great contributor to Network Ten's daytime program line-up. Major change ahead for Sunrise

Sunrise has had a lot of readjusting to do in 2023, with their casting change in the wake of longtime host David Koch’s departure being just the beginning.

And now, the show is faced with another new development, as Channel 7 looks to pack up its Martin Place residence to move to its new studio.

Fans of the show will be familiar with the window backdrop that came with the CBD location, as it’s where the company has called home for almost two decades. But Sunrise is next up to make the move to 7’s new Eveleigh studio, with 7 NEWS anchor Mark Ferguson giving the final go ahead.

Over the course of a month, Channel 7’s flagship morning shows will be following their nightly counterparts to the new location, with Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise, and The Morning Show next on the removalist’s to-do list.

They won’t be alone in the new studio, with the likes of 7NEWS.com.au and 7 NEWS Spotlight already having parted ways with Martin Place.

And according to Seven West Media Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer James Warburton, the change marks the first time in 40 years that the network’s Sydney operation will be “under one roof”, as they embark on “the beginning of a landmark chapter”.

“Martin Place has served as an exceptional home for us but as we aim to unite even more Australians across our much-loved news and public affairs content, our transition to the purpose-built, state-of-the-art studio space in south Eveleigh is a pivotal move,” he said.

“7 NEWS’s relocation to south Eveleigh marks the start of this exciting phase and we look forward to Sunrise and The Morning Show joining our cutting-edge, new location soon.”

Network Director of News and Public Affairs Craig McPherosn had his own words to share, noting that the move “marks a new beginning” for everyone involved.

“Since first turning the lights on at Martin Place on August 30, 2004, Seven’s News and Public Affairs team has broadcast a mammoth 70,000 hours of television from the Martin Place studio,” he explained.

“Hundreds of careers started there, as did programs. Not all lasted but the constant demand for the content never wavered.

“It was a wonderful workplace for all of us, but it had served its time.”

Images: Sunrise / Channel 7

Bargain rental is “spacious” but missing key features

A studio apartment up for rent in Birmingham, England, for less than $750 a month isn’t unusual just for its cheap price - it’s missing some crucial amenities.

Listed on Rightmove for £425 ($AU 728) a month, the studio’s shower is located in an unlikely spot, directly opposite the bed.

The prime location of the shower in relation to the bed could be a perk for some, but it's clear screen makes for a lack of privacy. Erin Jayne Plummer farewelled

Erin Jayne Plummer’s daughter broke hearts at their mum’s funeral as they recalled their favourite memories with her.

The television presenter tragically took her own life on May 22 at the young age of 42, leaving behind a husband and three young daughters.

She was best known for hosting advertorials on morning show Studio 10 as well as shopping channel TVSN.

Friends and family gathered at the Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and the Dee Why RSL on Sydney’s northern beaches on Thursday to remember the beloved host.

The event was live streamed to accommodate those who could not make it in person which saw loved ones fondly recall the bubbly, loud, enthusiastic, loving person Erin was.

However, it was her daughters who stole the show with their heartbreaking words, missing their beloved mother.

First was Erin’s middle daughter who performed her own interpretation of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.

“Each day that passes I still don’t believe that she’s gone,” Erin’s eldest daughter, 15, said.

“That a family of three girls will grow up without our mum. This is the thought I can’t seem to get over.

“Mum was loved by everyone. She was selfless and gave her everything to take my sisters and I to 40 activities each week.

“She brought so much light to the world that we didn’t realise her heart was in so much pain.”

“Mum, I hope heaven treats you better than we ever could. She’s not ours anymore but we are hers forever.”

Erin’s youngest daughter then went on to recall her cherished moments with mother.

“My mum was the best person ever. I will always love you dearly mum,” she said.

“I can’t say much because she was so awesome and amazing. You were the key of the whole galaxy and world and all of the country to me.

“My favourite three things I liked doing with mum was going on a morning walk, having lots of hugs and kisses and cooking because once we were cooking and I spilt flour all over the table and I didn’t get in trouble.

“Me and my mum are such a great team. Her beautiful eyes shimmering in the sun was always so cool.

“I will never ever forget about my mum. I love her so much that I am even crying at my school.”

Erin’s mother then went on to say how Erin made every room she walked in brighter and her little interaction with Prince Harry when she was just 17.

“From down-and-out people to Prince Harry, who was delightfully entertained by our Erin when she was 17,” she said.

Erin ran into Prince Harry at Circular Quay and began to perform magic tricks which saw him “captivated”.

“When Erin walked into a room it was as if 20 more light bulbs were switched on,” she went.

“To our precious darling daughter Erin ... thank you for your unconditional love for us and for everything you have done for us.

“You gave it your best. Can’t ask for more than that. Until we meet again ... on this side or the other side of the vale, we love you with all our heart and soul.”

Her father said he would miss seeing his daughter’s smile and her rushing in and out of the house.

“I’ll miss her running in and out of home,” he said.

“She’d run in the door, you listened, she talked. She’d grab a pickled onion out of the fridge every day, and say, ‘see ya, dad’.

“They used to say she could talk under water with a mouth full of marbles.

“Erin was loud. Look at all the photos and try to find one where her mouth was closed.”

Finally, it was Erin’s husband Alan’s turn to remember his late wife, saying his daughter’s will continue her legacy.

“To me and the girls you weren’t just a TV presenter, you were the best TV presenter,” he said.

“I’ll never forget your selfless devotion to our three angels. Since you’ve left us there are some things I want you to know.

“I want you to know we’ve had the mattresses laid out together and we’ve all been sleeping together.

“I wanted you to know how I see your legacy living on forever through our three angels.

“I hope you’re in heaven forever, eating your red frogs.”

The ceremony then ended with Erin’s middle daughter tearing up as she sang Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

Image: Facebook

How Studio Ghibli films can help us rediscover the childlike wonder of our connection with nature

Films with powerful environmentally centred narratives can transform our thinking and connect us with nature in ways that scientific papers cannot. For example, Studio Ghibli, a renowned Japanese film studio co-founded by animator Hayao Miyazaki, creates complex visual stories about human-nature relationships that transcend barriers of culture or age. A key message of Miyazaki’s work is that we must respect nature – or face our own destruction.

Miyazaki’s films offer viewers moments of escape into fantastical worlds that nonetheless echo problems of modernity, demonstrating that it’s possible to portray complex environmental issues through animation in a way that retains mainstream appeal.

As a conservation scientist and Studio Ghibli enthusiast, I’ve analysed the environmental themes in three of its most well-known films: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), My Neighbour Totoro (1988) and Princess Mononoke (1997).

Nausicaä

Nausicaä, released with a special recommendation from the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, tells the story of an apocalyptic event that wreaks havoc on global ecosystems. Surviving humans must coexist alongside the Toxic Jungle, a dangerous landscape filled with poisonous fungal spores. Most humans fear the Toxic Jungle and seek to destroy it. But what they don’t understand is that it’s cleansing the environment for their benefit.

Miyazaki designed the film to mirror our society, where prioritising short-term materialistic growth over long-term environmental sustainability is predicted to lead to collapse. The film reminds us that being at war with nature ultimately ends in our demise. To create a sustainable future, we must work with nature rather than against it.

My Neighbour Totoro

In My Neighbour Totoro, a pair of young sisters move to a house in the countryside with their father as their mother recovers from illness. The girls explore their new house and the surrounding forest, forming a friendship with a large forest spirit named Totoro.

During UK lockdowns, local green spaces became a haven supporting my mental health and reminding me of my intrinsic connection to nature and to other humans. As I saw children spending more time playing on the grass or climbing trees, I realised the importance of unstructured playtime in nature. Indeed, a growing body of research suggests that children’s interactions with the natural world are invaluable for their wellbeing.

In Miyazaki’s film, the young sisters become friends with Totoro, explore their surroundings, and discover their affinity for their environment. Totoro is depicted as a warm and nurturing mother figure, representing and encouraging the healing effects of communing with nature: which have been well-documented in research and culture.

Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke is set in 14th-century Japan, a world where the constant battle between humans and forest kami (spirits) leads to casualties on both sides. In Shinto, a traditional Japanese religion, these kami are part of nature – but they’re not soft-natured entities. When humans refuse to respect their environment, they can seek revenge.

The film’s most powerful kami is the Forest Spirit (Shishigami), who is neither good nor evil but represents the pure power of nature. During the day, Shishigami appears as a deer. At night, it transforms into the eerie Night Walker. This transformation represents the duality of nature as a bringer of life and death, echoing how the natural world has the ability to both support and destroy humankind.

Similarly, the antagonist of the film, Lady Eboshi, isn’t in fact a clear-cut villain. Although she wants to cut down the forest to feed iron mines, she’s also the kind, generous leader of Iron Town, providing a haven for social outcasts and espousing gender equality. Yet despite her wish to build a better society, her actions – however well-intentioned – will destroy the forest and the homes of the kami.

This situation is a microcosm of ongoing environmental justice issues across the world, where poor and marginalised groups, including Indigenous people and women, suffer for the actions of the wealthy. In particular, although wealthy countries contribute the most to climate change, it’s poorer countries that must carry the greatest climate-related burdens.

As viewers of Princess Mononoke, we’re being encouraged to move beyond dichotomies of “us versus them”, thinking which allows groups with more power to distance themselves from those without: or even to dehumanise them altogether. Miyazaki’s work is a lesson in seeking intrinsic commonalities – what connects us rather than what divides – and using these to imagine fairer, more equal societies that live in harmony with nature.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Getty

Denise Drysdale’s son speaks out on painful condition

After Denise Drysdale was rushed to hospital with a rare nerve disorder in late September, her son Peter Milne has shared an update on her condition.

Speaking with Denise’s Studio 10 co-hosts, he revealed that his mother has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a neurological chronic health condition that causes pain and tenderness all over the body, according to Arthritis Australia.

“Mum has likened it to a shocking sort of pain right at the back of her eyes, sending electric shocks,” Peter explained.

“It comes in waves, and [had] little triggers like being on the phone, texting, laughing, anything where she needed to use her brain is just sending these terrible debilitating pains.”

He explained how debilitating her condition is, saying, “We have been in the car and had to stop the car completely to a standstill and just wait for these waves to come through.”

Peter went on to say that Denise’s pain had “dissipated” after she began undergoing “high intensity acupuncture” several times a week.

He also said that due to the pain, she has been struggling to eat.

“She managed to have a nice little plate of spaghetti the other day and she would not have eaten for over a week. She was trying to spoon little bits of yoghurt and couldn't swallow.”

Despite her ongoing pain, her son told her co-hosts that she has taken the illness in her stride as best she can.

“She has been amazing. She has still got her sense of humour. She did say that she thought she had come face-to-face with death but just realised it was her reflection in the mirror,” he said.

Image credits: Getty Images / Studio 10

Denise Drysdale rushed to hospital

Veteran TV personality Denise Drysdale has been hospitalised with a rare nerve disorder, according to reports. The 72-year-old was taken to hospital after suffering “unspeakable agony” in her face last week.

Explaining her absence on Studio 10 the past few days, entertainment reporter Craig Bennett told viewers what had happened. “You might’ve noticed you haven’t seen somebody on this couch or on this show for a little while. We’re talking Denise Drysdale.

“Why you’ve not seen her on the show for a little bit is because of this reason. Last week she was taken to hospital after suffering unspeakable agony that she described to me as a cross between being struck by a lightning bolt and a white hot poker.” He added, “It turns out she’s suffering from a rare nerve disorder that affects the face. Trigeminal neuralgia, it’s called.”

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the fifth cranial nerve, and causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like facial pain that can last anywhere from a few seconds to as long as two minutes per episode, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Bennett told viewers he has been speaking to Denise multiple times a day and that she’s on the mend. “I know we all share in wishing our Denise Drysdale the speediest of recoveries. We need our regular dose of Ding Dong,” referring to Drysdale’s nickname on the show.

It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for… Denise has landed! The pair were most likely referring to Drysdale’s accident on the set of Channel 7 show Holey Moley last year, where she tripped during a challenge and fractured her shoulder.

Co-host Sarah Harris said of Drysdale, “You know what, she just keeps getting up and going. Sarah Harris breaks down over death of Jono Coleman

Sarah Harris has had a teary start on Studio 10 this morning over the death of TV legend, Jono Coleman.

Coleman, 65, passed away on Friday after a four-year battle with prostate cancer.

Harris was in tears when this morning’s show started, with the host joking: “I thought I would get further into the show (before crying)”.

“It is a hard day here for everyone here at Studio 10,” Harris continued. “We lost our beautiful mate on Friday night, Jono Coleman. He was an absolute legend of TV and radio but more than that, he was just a beautiful husband, he adored Margot. He was a beautiful dad and he was our mate.

“Goodbye Jono Coleman, our hearts are utterly broken,” Harris said.

This morning's episode of Studio 10 was dedicated to Coleman with a number of family and friends paying tribute to the TV personality, including Jess Rowe, Stephen K Amos, Ian Rogerson and Denise Drysdale.

Angela Bishop was also on the verge of tears as she revealed her late husband Peter, who died from cancer in 2017, used to receive cancer treatment alongside Coleman.

“He and Pete were having treatment together at some stages … and even then, as they sat side-by-side in those chairs having treatment, he (Coleman) again just brought joy and hope and positivity, every single time. He was a ball of positive energy as all times,” Bishop said.

Coleman’s death was announced by his wife, Margot, who said in a statement: “Jono and I have been soulmates for close to 40 years. We have been fortunate to live a rich and wonderful life and I have been lucky enough to watch up-close someone with enormous talent and the special gift to make people laugh.

“I will miss him beyond words and with the support of our gorgeous children, Oscar and Emily, and their partners, we will continue to live in the manner he wanted.

“When I asked Jono recently how he wanted to be remembered, he said, ‘For doing a good deed every day.’ Such was the generosity and caring nature of the love of my life,” Margot said.

Social media was immediately flooded with tributes after Coleman’s death was announced, with Grant Denyer writing: “I’ve never met someone so warm, welcoming and funny.”

Comedian Adam Hills wrote on Twitter: “One of my early radio heroes, and one of the nicest people I ever met. I used to wake up to his voice back when radio alarm clocks were a thing. A ball of positive energy who scaled the heights of the industry in both the UK and Australia.”

Mark Humphries tweeted: “Jono Coleman was a ball of positive energy and light, his enthusiasm was infectious and he was incredibly kind. I absolutely loved the guy.”

And Coleman’s former Studio 10 co-host, Joe Hildebrand, praised the entertainer in a piece for The Australian, writing: “His cameos and skits were eye-wateringly funny – if you search for them now you can see me literally crying with laughter. After I left Studio 10 I stayed in touch with Jono of course, but where once he would answer the phone before the first ring and one text message would instantly become a dozen he gradually became harder to reach as that godawful cancer set in. I finally managed to get him on the phone briefly one night a few weeks ago. He was clearly tired and weak and yet still somehow his ever-ebullient self, joshing with me in whispers.

“I knew he needed to sleep and he was far too polite to brush me off so I let him go with a promise to speak again. We never did and so I hope these words suffice: Jono, you were a great friend and an even greater man. Goodnight, you golden thing.”

Hope you’re okay. I’m managing by dressing up in fringes,” she wrote in a post of the number.

The 51-year-old was fully dolled up, and even finished off the look with matching Miu Miu closed-toe heels, pink earrings and a bold makeup look.

Fans were not shy to let Rowe know they approve of the lockdown attire.

“OMG! I wouldn’t normally comment on your posts (because squillions of others do) … but that dress just screams, “screw you lockdown”! Who wore it best? Julia Morris and Angela Bishop’s awkward onscreen moment

Julia Morris and Angela Bishop expertly diffused a potentially-awkward live television moment on Friday after both showing up wearing the exact same dress on Studio 10.

The beloved television personalities laughed the moment off as they attempted to avoid a repeat of the infamous #jacketgate moment of 2017.

Appearing on Studio 10 to discuss her new book, tongue-in-cheek self-help book Julia Morris Makes it Easy, with Beau Ryan and Sarah Harris, Morris appeared on screen in a stunning purple and pink dress, only to be interrupted a few moments later by Bishop in the very same floral outfit.

“Can I just interrupt … Can I get a piece of advice Julia: What happens when you turn up on national television wearing the same frock as someone else?” Bishop asked as the panel erupted in laughter.

“What I wanna know Ange is who wore it breast?” Morris quipped, standing up with her chest to the camera.

“You took the words right out of my mouth,” Ryan joked, before Morris added: “You look gorgeous … I have to get my own modesty board but check this out,” she said as she lifted her leg up to show off sneakers.

Bishop replied by saying she'd paired the dress with classic black Christian Louboutins.

It’s certainly not the first time a live cross has seen two presenters in the same outfit.

In 2017, off-air footage of Channel 9 reporter Julie Snook being berated by newsreader Amber Sherlock for wearing a similar colour top to her during a live cross made headlines across the world, forever to become known as #jacketgate.
