Isla Fisher shares family tragedy

Australian actress Isla Fisher took to Instagram on Sunday to share that her father, Brian Fisher, passed away at the age of 85.

“How do you live without someone that you can’t live without?” Isla captioned the post, posing the impossible question to her 1.9m followers. “How lucky am I to have had you as my dad. You were hilarious, positive and my best friend.

“No matter what was going in my life on you always asked me if I was having fun. I know this pain is going to get worse as the days between when I last saw you increase and that is very scary.

“I love you so much. Thank you for being the greatest father.”

The post featured an image of Brian in a blue jacket, posing while staring at something off-camera. Australian tennis legend suffers heart attack

Tennis legend Todd Woodbridge has revealed he suffered a mild heart attack last week.

The TV commentator said he was "shocked" when he began to experience chest pains and other mild symptoms, before they took a turn for the worst.

The 51-year-old says the episode came out of nowhere as he was exercising as part of his daily routine, according to The Herald Sun.

Since retiring from tennis in 2005, the 16-time grand slam doubles champion has been focused on his health and creating healthier everyday habits.

This is why his recent scare was so important to speak about openly to the public.

Woodbridge posted on Twitter on Thursday family genetics played a significant part as a cause in triggering the attack.

“My family genetics dictated that I would have cholesterol issues and that was a major cause of my episode,” he posted.

Woodbridge also told 3AW in an interview on Thursday he “didn’t think it was going to happen to me”.

“My dad carried a pretty heavy cholesterol issue, I have that, and as we spoke about in What Makes You Tick, I lost both of my brothers in their 50s,” he said.

Woodbridge also explained how the attack happened when spoke to The Herald Sun.

“It was last Thursday, I tried to keep my routine having travelled to the US Open and London and I was just exercising and had chest pains and every symptom when you look up google — full sweats and I felt awful,” he said.

“I had a little heart episode that goes down as a mild heart attack which is a bit of a shock to me."

“And you’re personally still coming to terms with somebody like myself who I consider to lead a pretty good fit healthy lifestyle — I keep active, I eat well, I do all the right things, I enjoy doing that. It’s been a wake up call to me to make sure I look after myself. If it can happen to me it shows that it can happen to anybody.”

Woodbridge said he is now taking it easy, recovering from the attack, but counts himself lucky.

"My mind is blown": MasterChef winner crowned!

Billie McKay has been announced as MasterChef Fans & Favourites winner!

The seventh season winner was up against Sarah Todd, who came ninth on the sixth season of MasterChef.

The pair went head-to-head for the glorious $250,000 prize money on Tuesday night which saw Billie beat Sarah by just a few points.

This makes Billie the first person to win two seasons of MasterChef.

The first round of the grand finale gave Billie and Sarah the option of choosing between a mystery box or to cook a dish that was both sweet and savoury.

Both Billie and Sarah opted for the latter and made cumin panna cotta with rosemary and rhubarb and sticky chicken wingettes with glaze respectively.

Sarah was praised by the judges for “hitting the brief” with Melissa Leong describing it as a “very well-balanced plate of food.”

She received 26 points.

Billie’s panna cotta unfortunately did not set in time which saw her accept the “major fail”.

“I am so disappointed for you. It’s the foundational aspect of this entire dish and it’s not set – that’s a really tough pill to swallow,” Melissa said.

While judge Andy Allen said it was “delicious – but it could be better with a set panna cotta.”

She received 21 points.

The second and final round was tough for Billie who was already five points behind Sarah but the pair rallied on.

Guest chef Heston Blumenthal arrived and gave Billie and Sarah five hours and 15 minutes to replicate his epic dish, taffety tart.

Both contestants were faced with a few mishaps along the way before placing their dish to be judged.

Once again, Sarah went first with judge Jock Zonfrillo saying her dish was “just as good” as Heston’s. Melissa called it an “extraordinary effort”.

Andy however pointed out a few issues which gave a bit of a window for Billie.

Sarah received 30 points out of 40 bringing her total score to 56.

The judges' tasted Billie’s dish and were in awe at the precision and taste.

Andy described the dish on “another level of precision and finesse”.

“Everything is there, present and correct. My mind is blown,” Melissa said.

Billie shot to the lead when she received 37 points out of 40 bringing her total score to 58.

Image: Channel 10

Illegal fishers and wayward sharks are in the sights of new multispectral imaging

The oceans are warming. Reefs are dying. Fish are on the move.

As a result, sharks and illegal fishers are scouring Australia’s coast in search of an increasingly elusive catch, and that, says ESpy Ocean founder Ian Dewey, is having an immense impact on everything from regional tourism to ocean ecologies.

Illegal fishers, like sharks, are elusive predators. Their survival depends on being fast, silent and unexpected. They’re threatening a $1.6-billion regional Australia industry.

Sharks also aren’t behaving the way they used to. They’re turning up in unexpected places, at unexpected times, which can result in tragedy.

“Everyone says use drones or dirigibles to spot them,” Dewey says. “But everyone knows that when we’re on the beach in our string bikinis and Speedos, the last thing we want is a drone above us.”

With dark fleets of illegal fishing boats turning off their tracking systems to breach international boundaries, time is of the essence in addressing the problem, just as it is with wayward sharks.

“Both are increasing problems,” Dewey says. “I only know in terms of the illegal fishing missions that we’ve been involved in, but invariably there are people around protected areas on a daily basis”.

Traditional spotter aircraft can’t cope, and using satellites to track vessels isn’t anything new. What is new is multispectral imaging.

A regular camera captures an image on just three channels red, green and blue (RGB) – generating a crisp image of the visible spectrum if the weather is clear.

A multispectral image has up to 110 different frequencies, ranging from ultraviolet to microwave.

This imaging technology is nothing new. What is new is applying machine learning to identifying what it “sees”.

“So it was a matter of working out what we can do through clouds in all kinds of weather, preferably right on dawn,” says Dewey. “I just started going through what frequencies can do what and – if we are looking for a boat – what the hell’s it gonna look like?”

It’s a similar story for sharks – what multispectral signatures do different species give, at what depth, under what conditions, at what time?

Dewey says the potential to extract such detail from hyperspectral imaging is enormous.

It can identify what a boat is made from, what sort of paint has been used (and how old it is), and what equipment is on the deck.

“All these things mean that your picture is different to every other boat in the ocean,” he says. “If we see you today, we can see you tomorrow, match those frequencies, and say – we got you!”

ESpy demonstrated the potential of the technology for New South Wales Fisheries over the last Easter long weekend. Suitable satellites were identified, access to their hyperspectral cameras was secured, and patrol vessels were stationed in strategic locations waiting for a call to action.

“Our system is incredibly fast, which gives us the edge,” Dewey says. “Generally, our system allows boats to be caught red-handed. That makes it so much easier where the courts are concerned.”

The shark-spotting challenge is a more recent project. ESpy is in initial discussions with NSW Fisheries and the University of South Australia’s Industrial AI Research Centre to develop techniques to spot the predators first thing in the morning and use established behavioural patterns to predict where they could move during the day.

While trespassing trawlers present a major issue, the deadliest offender is often someone much closer to home. One dragnet can strip an ecosystem of everything from algae and small crustaceans to dolphins and turtles, leaving damage that can take years to recover.

“Our big problem in Australia is the little guy who throws out a net once or twice,” Dewey says. “He’s generally local, or at least from within 100-or-so kilometres. But he’s got a high risk of being caught, so he just wants to get in and take as much as possible as quickly as possible.”

This article originally appeared on cosmosmagazine.com and was written by Jamie Seidel.

Image: Shutterstock

5 mysterious celebrity deaths that are still unexplained

Though some of these deaths occurred decades ago, that hasn’t stopped conspiracy theorists from trying to sniff out the truth.

Marilyn Monroe

The world was shaken on August 5, 1962, when Marilyn Monroe was found dead at the age of 36 in her home in Los Angeles. The cause? A barbiturate overdose that was ruled a ‘probable’ suicide. That lead many to doubt the gorgeous star, rumoured to have been involved in extramarital affairs with both John F. Kennedy and his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, had taken her own life. Instead, conspiracy theorists have long suspected Monroe was murdered (by being forced to take the drugs that killed her) to keep her from talking about the Kennedy brothers. The CIA continues to maintain files on Monroe’s death, and it is unlikely anyone will ever know what really happened.

Natalie Wood

On November 29, 1981, the actress and movie star Natalie Wood drowned while on a boating trip with her husband, Robert Wagner. Wagner had reported Wood missing after a night of drinking, and Wood’s body was found several hours later floating face-down in the water wearing a flannel nightgown, down jacket and socks. At first, Wood’s death was ruled accidental, but then bruises on her body led law enforcement to consider foul play, with Wagner, now 87, as the prime suspect. Natalie Wood’s sister and the yacht’s skipper appeared on the Dr. Phil show in 2018, where they claimed Wagner murdered the starlet. Adding fuel to the conspiracy fire: In 2012, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department changed the cause of her death from “accidental drowning” to “drowning plus ‘undetermined factors,’” reports USA Today. Trouble is, the evidence is insufficient to support an arrest, and the mystery remains unsolved.

Thelma Todd

American actress Thelma Todd died in 1935 of carbon monoxide poisoning. Todd, 29, was found slumped over the steering wheel of her Lincoln. The engine wasn’t running, however, and Todd’s throat showed signs of trauma, as if something like a hose or a pipe had been forced into her mouth by an assailant. Suspects included her ex-husband, her current lover, and the gangster, Lucky Luciano. In the weeks prior to her death, she had received several notes demanding she pay $10,000 or be killed, reported the L.A. Times. The grand jury impanelled to investigate was unable to come to a conclusion, remaining hopelessly split between those who believed she’d been murdered and those who believed she’d died accidentally.

Tupac Shakur

In 1996, hip-hop star Tupac Shakur died in Las Vegas several days after a drive-by shooting that occurred while Shakur was leaving a boxing event. “The story…begins with a failed attempt on his life two years earlier,” according to History.com, which Shakur blamed on producer Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs and rival rapper Christopher Wallace (“Notorious B.I.G.”). Wallace was murdered six months later in Los Angeles; no arrest has ever been made in either case.

Elizabeth Short

The body of 22-year-old aspiring actress Elizabeth Short was discovered brutally murdered on January 15, 1947, in a vacant lot near Leimert Park in Los Angeles, her body cut in half, drained of blood, and cleaned of all evidence. The sole witness was of little help, claiming only to have seen a black sedan parked in the area. Despite many theories, allegations and leads over the years, the killer was never found. Today, the Black Dahlia murder (as the case came to be known) remains one of the oldest cold case files in L.A., as well as the city’s most famous.

Written byLauren Cahn. Todd McKenney’s sister and his ex hit back after family secret exposed

Todd McKenney’s sister and her husband Simon Gallaher have fired back after McKenney revealed during a radio interview over the weekend he was Gallaher's lover for five years before his sister, Lisa, married Gallaher.

Speaking on the Word for Word podcast on Melbourne's Joy 94.9, which caters to the LGBTI community, the Dancing with the Stars judge revealed for the first time that Gallaher went on to marry his sister after the couple split.

On Tuesday night Gallaher posted on his Facebook feed: "I have only one thing to say. Todd McKenney is a Headline Whore. Shame on him. His sister on the other hand is the love of my life and wife of over 31 years. I love her to the end of the world."

McKenney’s estranged sister also hit back at her brother, writing on Facebook: "My brother is being a douchebag. We all just have to duck the fall out now. Selfish, lying idiot."

The Gallahers' daughter, Gigi, was also unhappy with her uncle’s comments, telling Daily Edition's Peter Ford that she was "very unhappy with Uncle Todd for putting this out publicly."

She also challenged the radio station for airing the interview, saying: "publicly outing someone is just wrong", before revealing she knew of her father and uncle's relationship, but added that not all her family did.

During the pre-recorded interview on the weekend, McKenney revealed: "I have a sister. She is 11 months older than me, she married my ex boyfriend. We have a weird relationship."

"She is still married to my ex-boyfriend but just has never mentioned it to me. It's weird, isn't it? I think this is the first time I have ever talked about it publicly,” he said.

"Simon Gallaher, big theatrical producer. We did Pirates of Penzance together.

"I went out with Simon for five years. It wasn't a weekend fling at the drive in. We split up and I went on with my life and he went on with his."

McKenney said he had kept the family secret for so long out of respect for Gallahers’ children but they were “grown up now” and “know the stories”. He was "sick of not talking about it” and believed “it’s time” to speak about it.

Todd McKenney exposes surprising family secret

The former Dancing With The Stars judge has revealed a bombshell family secret in a new interview.

While speaking on the Word For Word podcast with Ben Norris from Joy 94.9, the entertainer shared that one of his ex-boyfriends went on to marry and have children with his sister.

“She married my ex-boyfriend … so we have a weird relationship,” McKenney said about his sister, Lisa.

“She married my ex-boyfriend and is still married to my ex-boyfriend but just has never mentioned it to me. It’s weird isn’t it? I don’t think I’ve ever spoken about it publicly.”

McKenney, who recently choreographed the Australian routine for The Real Full Monty on Channel Seven, revealed that he had dated singer and musical producer Simon Gallaher for five years when he was younger.

“We did Pirates Of Penzance together … then we split up. I went on with my life and he went on with his.”

However, McKenney was unaware of the relationship between his ex and his sister until his fellow performers told him.

“I remember I was doing Cats and there was a newspaper banner outside the newsagency, and it said, ‘Simon’s love child,’” McKenney said on the podcast.

“I didn’t know anything about that but I got into my dressing room and the other guys in the show said, ‘What about Simon and Lisa?’ And I went, ‘Which Simon?’ They said, ‘Simon Gallaher.’ I said, ‘Lisa who?’ And they said, ‘Your sister!’

“I went, ‘What?!’ I didn’t even know they knew each other.

“They got married and have got three kids and I’m close to their kids.”

The Aussie entertainer said he was not bothered by the relationship on the podcast, saying: “If you’re happy go for it.”

McKenney, who is currently playing Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror in Melbourne, shared the family secret after years of covering it up.

“I’m sick of not talking about it,” McKenney said.

He revealed that he hadn’t discussed the matter before because he was concerned that Gallaher’s children were too young for the story to be in the public domain.

“For the sake of them I haven’t said it, but they’re grown up now and I get on with them and they know the stories now,” he said.

During the podcast, he also mentioned how he and his sister are “chalk and cheese” and have never had a close relationship.

“We were in the same family but cut from a completely different cloth,” he said.

“We see each other from time to time, but we don’t ring each other. There’s no animosity.”

Carrie Fisher’s brother reveals her one big regret

Shortly before her death in December 2016, Carrie Fisher revealed for the first time in her memoir that she had a brief on-set affair with Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford.

Carrie’s brother, Todd, has now revealed in his new book, My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie, that Carrie rued the day she told the public about her three-month fling, which she detailed in her own autobiography, The Princess Diarist.

In the book, Todd writes that his and Carrie’s mother, Debbie Reynolds, didn’t know about Carrie’s affair with Ford when she was a single 19-year-old and he was a married 33-year-old father of two.

Todd says that Reynolds disapproved of both the affair and of Carrie’s decision to make it public.

Carrie eventually told Reynolds: “You’re right. I shouldn’t have told that story.”

At the time of her memoir’s release, Carrie describe their first intimate experience as clumsy.

"I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind," she said.

"It was so intense," Fisher told People during an interview to promote the book.

"It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend."

Carrie died in December 2016 of cardiac arrest, with Debbie passing away just a day later.

In his book, Todd explains how he saw what happened: “The common theory about Mum’s passing was that, after losing Carrie, Debbie Reynolds died of a broken heart. Take it from the son who was there, who knew her better than anyone else on earth — that’s simply not true. Debbie Reynolds willed herself right off this planet to personally see to it that Carrie would never be alone.”
