New Zealand dominates Traveller’s Choice Awards

New Zealand has beaten Australia in TripAdvisor’s annual Traveller’s Choice list across several adventurous categories, with Queenstown taking out the top spot for the Pacific.

The annual list is compiled using reviews and ratings on the TripAdvisor website, and 2021’s results showed it was the year for short getaways and outdoor destinations.

Auckland ranked as the third most popular destination in the Pacific, following behind scenic balloon tours by Lake Wakatipu and jet skiing in Bora Bora in first and second place.

As for the best overall experiences, Rotorua came in first and fourth for white water rafting and ziplining respectively, followed by quad bike tours on Kangaroo Island in second place, and a discovery tour on Queensland’s Magnetic Island coming in third.

Though New Zealand took out the top spots, Australia had six “best destinations” in the top 10 over their Kiwi neighbour’s three.

Top 10 Popular Destinations in the South Pacific

1. TripAdvisor reveals Australia’s best hotels for 2019

TripAdvisor has recently announced the winners of its Travellers’ Choice Awards for Australian hotels in 2019.

If it sounds like an impressive feat, that’s because it is. The top winners have been judged by the millions of reviews and opinions collected in one year from users on TripAdvisor. You don’t even have to be Australian-based to vote, as many were visitors from around the world.

These are the top five places as voted by millions of TripAdvisor users. Click through the gallery to see what they look like!

1. Ovolo Woolloomooloo, Sydney NSW

This hotel boasts modern luxury, but also adds a sense of history as it’s right along the Woolloomooloo Wharf in Sydney. It’s a stone’s throw away from the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge and has accessible rooms as well as free wi-fi.

2. Pinetrees Lodge, Lord Howe Island

Reviewers couldn’t be happier with this secluded lodge in Lord Howe Island, as the hotel is a nice escape from everyday life. With snorkelling, surfing and much more on offer, as well as spectacular rooms, it’s easy to see why reviewers keep coming back.

3. Ovolo 1888, Darling Harbour, Sydney NSW

This hotel caught people’s attention for its location and the unique history that surrounds the hotel, as it was originally constructed as a wool store and factory in 1888. The hotel, whilst still remaining modern, brings together the charm of olden days Sydney whilst still providing a level of comfort.

4. Peninsula Boutique Hotel, Port Douglas, QLD

This hotel overlooks the famous Four Mile Beach and is exceptionally close to Macrossan Street, where there are a variety of shops and restaurants to choose from. With a tiered heated pool as well as being close to the beach, you can’t ask for much more than that.

5. Korte’s Resort, Rockhampton, QLD

Located at the beautiful location of Rockhampton, Queensland, guests were very pleased with the tropical oasis on offer from Korte’s Resort. Reviewers were a fan of the reasonable rates, as well as the cleanliness and modern stylings within the rooms.

Have you stayed at any of these places? Which one was your favourite? Devious tactic hotels use to ban bad reviews

While it certainly falls short of being the white knight of the travel industry, the online review system is an important tool to let holidaymakers review their accommodation options, while ultimately keeping the providers honest.

But some hotels are going to incredible lengths to avoid bad publicity, and this alarming trend could see you left with a hefty fine once your trip is over.

This practice was first brought to light when a New York hotel made headlines four years ago, after an alarming detail was noticed in the booking terms and conditions.

“If you have booked the inn for a wedding or other type of event,” read the policy at the Union Street Guest House in Hudson, “there will be a $500 fine that will be deducted from your deposit for every negative review... placed on any internet site by anyone in your party.”

But this is by no means an isolated incident. Hotels are increasingly adding unreasonable details to their T’s and C’s which discourage guests from going online with bad reviews.

And it’s not just happening in the US. Last November, Meriton Serviced Apartments were found guilty in the Federal Court of “masking” a practice that prevents bad reviews being left of TripAdvisor. The court found staff added “MSA” to the email addresses of any guests who had a negative experience, which would make their email address invalid and prevent them from getting a TripAdvisor invite to review their stay.

“It will send a strong message to the industry more broadly,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court told news.com.au after the court’s ruling.

“If Meriton can get caught I do think that is going to make people sit up and think about what they are doing ... no doubt it does happen in other places.”

What are your thoughts? Do you generally leave a review after staying at a hotel?

Irish restaurant owner has the funniest response to Aussie tourist’s review

An Irish restaurant owner’s hilarious response to a disgruntled Australian diner’s TripAdvisor review has gone viral, and when you read it, you’ll see why.

User “Graham367” left a less-than-positive review on the TripAdvisor page for Eala Bahn restaurant in Sligo, Ireland, after leaving his jacket and glasses behind and the owner failing to return them to him.

“The food was quite reasonable, however we were extremely disappointed to find that the operator lacked integrity,” Graham wrote. “This comment is based on the fact that I accidentally left my wind breaker with eye glasses in pocket. We only discovered this when we arrived at our next destination, so rang and spoke to the restaurant manager (Anthony Gray) who confirmed that the jacket was with them."

Graham added, “Based on his agreement to forward the jacket to me, I emailed details of my credit card to cover all costs to return the garment to me. When it did not arrive within a week or so, I re-emailed twice with no response. My wife and I have since returned to Australia, short of one jacket and one pair of glasses. Bottom line is food might be OK, but integrity is seriously lacking.”

It might seem like a perfectly reasonable complaint, but when you hear Anthony’s side of the story, you might change your mind. His response is a bit on the long side, but trust us – it’s worth the read!

Dear Graham,

I never usually respond to reviews but have made an exception in your case.

We are delighted you enjoyed your meal at multi-award-winning restaurant here in Sligo serving the finest local sourced ingredients on the very edge of the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way!

I apologise that you forgot your jacket and glasses while dining with us. I apologise that I had not immediately sent your belongings back to Australia. I should have done a Joe ninety on it and hot-tailed it up to the local post office and made your jacket a priority but unfortunately these things don't always happen the way you may have planned.

I mean I'm only trying to run two restaurants in the middle of summer while my manager whom I'm delighted to say is 6 months pregnant but unfortunately is suffering God bless her wee soul and out of work resting which I insisted on!

Having 3 children myself under the age of 10 running around the house like gladiators and tearing to pieces while not going to bed on time, rising like ninjas at dawn, I am what you might say just a little tired and a tad busy.

I should have pushed this way up my priority list but forgot and while all of this is going I'm very busy busting a gut here and in the UK promoting my beloved Sligo. Why do I do this? I love my town, I love its people, I love every tourist that graces this beautiful part of the world and provides me and my staff with a living.

People make mistakes and forget things just like you did with your possessions. But to come on TripAdvisor and review me about my lack of postal skills, honesty and integrity beggars belief considering I never laid my mince pies eyes on you! I mean you are butchering my name insofar as my forgetfulness yet it was your forgetfulness that has us here! POT KETTLE BLACK (Google it).

Finally, I just checked the weather forecast in your part of sunny Australia and I reckon you will be fairly safe insofar as your lack of windbreaker... jaysus it's roasting in your spot boy! You lucky duck! Your possessions are en route you will be glad to know! And as far as my honesty is concerned I'm not even going to charge your credit card for the post furthermore the next time you visit the beautiful Emerald Isle and my county I'll bring you shopping locally for a new wind breaker – as far I see it’s a bit of a crime against fashion.

Next time you feel like writing a review for a restaurant try to remember us for our qualities which we provide in the abundance of good locally sourced food, wine, atmosphere at least that's what we hear consistently from our customers.

So eventually when it cools down in Australia and you put your wind breaker on think of your honest Irish restauranteur who's full of integrity but you never met and who knows you may even break into a smile and give your face a holiday until then keep her lit.

WE MAKE OUT OF THE QUARREL WITH OTHERS, RHETORIC, BUT OF THE QUARREL WITH OURSELVES – W.B YEATS.

Regards and good day mate,

Anthony Gray

Now that’s how you handle a negative review!

TripAdvisor has named its top 10 beaches for 2016 in its annual Travellers’ Choice awards, with Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos taking out the top spot.

Turks and Caicos is an archipelago of low lying coral islands to the south east of the Bahamas. 9 hilariously blunt Tripadvisor reviews of popular attractions

Tripadvisor is a website that allows tourists to submit their own reviews of tourist attractions, locations, restaurants and activities. We’ve put together a list of nine times Tripadvisor users were hilariously blunt in their assessments of some of the world’s most popular landmarks.

Sydney Opera House

Tripadvisor user wanderer2012 was brutal in their assessment of the Sydney Opera House, describing it as “less awful it looks”, adding, “It’s a pretty awful 1960s style concrete building. It’s really nothing special at all. Save yourself the effort and view it from the bridge or harbour.”

Eiffel Tower, Paris

A Tripadvisor user by the name of Martin R, was less than impressed with the Eiffel Tower, suggesting that Blackpool Tower was just as impressive. Martin R wrote, “Too big, too ugly and too many people. Prefer Blackpool Tower or Roc d’Enfer. Nice river though. Mmmmmm.”

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

SchweizerAussie was less than impressed with their visit to the Golden Gate Bridge, mostly due to the colour it seems: “It’s red and windy and cold and I think they should rename it the big rusty cold bridge in the city that has many homeless people that all asked me for quarters.”

The Grand Canyon, Arizona

David H wasn’t really taken by The Grand Canyon, arguing, “I’ve been to a number of so called landmarks in my time – but what the hell was this? Just an overblown sandy ditch. Really don’t get the fascination. Took two hours to get there – should’ve stayed in my hotel and watched a DVD.”

Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro

Christ the Redeemer might be one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, but Tripadvisor user Sivasuriam wasn’t impressed, writing: “The world’s most highly over rated... hahahaha... wonder of the world. Just a concrete pillar. I spent a total of five minutes here.”

Stonehenge, Wiltshire

Tripadvisor users were also underwhelmed by the prehistoric monument and deterred by the cold wind, stating: “A bunch of old rocks sitting in the middle of a deserted area of England ... Here’s my advice — get a video of Stonehenge from your library. Watch it for free on your TV as you sip an Old Speckled Hen beer or an Earl Grey tea if you prefer. Return it to your library. You have just saved loads of dollars and seen it without the hassle or the cold wind blowing in your face.”

The Great Wall of China

Expecting a sound assessment of The Great Wall of China is probably a lot to ask from a Tripadvisor user name dwoodywoodpecker51, who said, “I soon understood that it was definitely too long for me and I got tired. I failed in front of my wife because of this wall, so I’m not going back there.”

Hollywood Sign, California

One Tripadvisor reviewer named Lisa S was less than impressed by California’s Hollywood Sign, stating, “But if you find it is a must for you to do, know the road is very winding to get to the sign. Take your picture from a distance because it is not impressive when you get to the top.”

The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen

Odysseusaz was scathing in their assessment of the Copenhagen statue, arguing that The Little Mermaid, “It’s like the Kardashians. Famous because... It’s famous. Waste of time. See it on a hop-on-off tour if it passes, but don’t go out of your way.”

Hero image credit: Shutterstock / ChameleonsEye

Can you really trust TripAdvisor reviews?

From humble beginnings in 2000, TripAdvisor has changed the way we travel. Hotels live or die on its rankings and bad customer reviews can sink even the most venerable establishment. But can it be trusted?

Properties have been accused of writing their own positive reviews, incentivising customers to write positive reviews or writing negative reviews of competitors. There are stories of great “review factories” in China or the Philippines where thousands of workers are paid to input reviews constantly, having a major effect on the rankings system. Some people even like to play with the system for fun, like the group of mischievous web users who managed to put a fictional restaurant in Brixham in the UK at the top of the TripAdvisor ranking for the region. And the potential for corruption goes much higher than people may realise. The Australian PR boss of one of the world’s largest hotel groups was caught out posting negative reviews of rival chains and was summarily fired after a hugely embarrassing publicity scandal. But the damage was done and people began to seriously question the legitimacy of the site.

That’s not to say that the site doesn’t have its uses. The majority of the millions of reviews are genuine, written by travellers just like yourself who want to reward good service (or warn other travellers of potential disasters). As with anything you find on the internet, just don’t believe everything you read.

So how can you avoid the scams?

Compare multiple sites. Sure TripAdvisor is (by a large margin) the most popular, but sites like Hotels.com, Expedia and Wotif also have customer reviews. If you like the sound of a property then it pays to do a quick search for other reviews on different websites.

Ask around. Remember what we did before TripAdvisor? We asked our friends, family, neighbours and colleagues where they stayed and what they thought of it. Social media is also a great outlet for this – ask a travel related question and you’ll be inundated with responses.

Use your common sense. Don’t just look at the numbers, read the reviews and use your best judgment. It’s often easier to spot a fake than you might think, so keep an eye out for poor spelling and grammar, repetitive reviews or anything that just doesn’t make sense. And take everything with a grain of salt.
