"Are you coming back?" ABC loses another host

ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland has announced he’s “taking a break” one day after criticising the public broadcaster for failing Stan Grant.

Rowland made the announcement live on air that he will be “off on a break” and hosting had been “a real honour”.

He later took to Twitter, writing, “Take care and see you soon”.

ABC bosses have insisted Rowland is going on a “long-planned holiday” and will return to the show in a month's time.

Rowland urged the public broadcaster to call out racism more quickly and effectively after Grant revealed he was leaving Q+A.

Grant announced he was taking an indefinite break as host of Q+A on May 19 after he received “racial filth” on social media.

Rowland said in response to Grant’s racial abuse, “It hasn't just been weeks and months, it's been years that Stan's been copping this. Racism is a scourge.

“We all need to do better and that includes the ABC in calling it out and calling it out more quickly than we have in this country,” he added.

That same day Rowland posted a video of Grant’s compelling monologue alongside the caption, “Racism is a scourge. We all need to do better in calling it out, and that includes the ABC.”

Finance presenter on ABC News Breakfast Madeline Morris is said to join Rowland’s co-host Lisa Miller for the “next little while”.

After announcing his departure, Rowland thanked viewers at home.

“I just want to use this semi-regular opportunity to thank all of you, our viewers, you have been fabulous for this show in the time that I've been on the show, it's been great presenting to you,” he said.

“If it wasn't for you, the viewers, none of us would be here doing what we do, so it's been a real honour.”

One of his shocked co-hosts said, “That sounds kinda final. Are you coming back?", to which Rowland just smiled and didn’t respond.

Lisa Millar jokingly replied, “Absolutely! And he's bringing presents because that's the rule: wherever you're travelling to, come back with gifts.”

A spokesperson for ABC told Daily Mail Australia, “Michael is on a long-planned holiday and will be back on air 26 June.”

TV producer Robert McKnight responded to Rowland’s announcement, saying, “Very sorry to hear this. Michael is one of the best! Good luck to you, Michael.”

One Twitter user said the news was “very upsetting”.

“First I lose Stan Grant on Q&A. Now I loose you getting me through my mornings,”

She added, “Very angry reporters and presenters have been abandoned by their employers.”

There has been no suggestion Rowland feels “abandoned” by the ABC.

Rowland’s criticising of the ABC followed an appearance on the program by Ian Hamm, chair of the First Nations Foundation.

“Stan does his job very well. I think he has taken on the role of poking the bear of Australia where it's uncomfortable from time to time,” Hamm said.

“There is risk with that. The pushback of those who don't like it and who perhaps want Aboriginal people to be more compliant and pleasant.”

He added, “Stan's not walking away. He's just taking a break as anybody should in this circumstance.”

Hamm said 2023 in particular, given Australians voting on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in November would raise lingering tensions.

“Australia does have race relations problems and all it takes is scratching the surface and some very unpleasant sores can be exposed.”

“I have great hope for my nation, but I'm also realistic enough to know that this is not an easy journey.

“He's not alone and the rest of us are behind him and like him, we're not walking away. And we intend to pursue the right place for our people in this country.”

Rowland’s news led another ABC reporter to comment, “Hope you're OK”.

Rowland has presented on ABC News Breakfast since 2010 when he joined Virginia Trioli on the sofa.

Following his almost 13-year run as host, he’s become a fan favourite on the program.

"The numbers don't lie": Sunrise and Today take their ratings rivalry to the next level

Tensions have reached new heights between Australian networks Seven and Nine, with one broadcaster releasing a public statement in defence of its own reportedly lacklustre breakfast show audience numbers.

According to a new report from the Daily Telegraph, Nine’s Today has been lagging behind Seven’s Sunrise, with year-to-date average audience figures putting Sunrise ahead by 18 per cent.

At a national scale, things don’t look much better for Nine, with Sunrise’s average sitting at 363,000 viewers and 271,000 for Today - numbers confirmed by news.com.au.

The publication also reported that a source claimed executives were concerned about Today’s new line-up of Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, and that it may not be connecting with their audiences as intended.

Nine’s director of morning television, Steven Burling, had plenty to say about the report, calling it a “fabrication and a distortion of the old fashioned and out of date overnight ratings system.”

He also noted that Today was actually in a favourable position with younger audiences, and considered that to be “all important”.

However, Sunrise weren’t too keen on accepting that fact, with a spokesperson for their network informing news.com.au that the ratings that had placed Sunrise at the top of the pecking order were, in fact, accurate.

“The numbers don’t lie,” they stated. “Sunrise has been number one for 19 years and is number one again this year, across the capital cities and nationally.

“Sunrise wins in Sydney, New South Wales, Victoria, Adelaide, South Australia, Perth, Western Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland. It is growing well in Melbourne. Today is ahead in Brisbane.”

They also had thoughts about Today being ahead with younger age groups, unwilling to believe it and instead arguing that Sunrise was the leader of the pack with the 25-54 group.

The same couldn’t be said for the 16-39 age bracket, with Today still seizing the win there.

The situation may yet change, as it’s already been in flux for a few years, with the two shows actually managing to narrow their gap in 2021.

2022 and 2023 were a different story, with that divide widening again, leading many to speculate that it may or may not have something to do with each breakfast programme’s chosen line-up.

David Koch has been hosting over at Sunrise for 20 years - with co-host Natalie Barr contributing in some capacity for the same span of time.

Meanwhile, Today has endured shake up after shake up in recent times, with Karl Stefanovic’s co-host Sarah Abo only joining him at the helm in 2023, after Allison Langdon left for a position at A Current Affair.

Images: Sunrise / Seven, Today / Nine

Breakfast Club star finally joins the baby club

Actor Anthony Hall and his wife, Lucia Oskerova, have shared the delightful news that they are expecting their first child together.

In a statement to People, the 54-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, opened up about how 34-year-old Lucia broke the news - a far cry from his The Breakfast Club character Brian Johnson’s stubborn “it's personal business. It's my personal, private business.”

"Lucia and I were at home,” he explained. “She surprised me by revealing that she was pregnant with an at-home pregnancy test. We were kissing, hugging, and thanking God. We immediately started dancing and laughing in our bathroom to celebrate the good news.”

Anthony went on to add that the couple will be having a boy, and that they already have a name for the little one picked out - “Michael Anthony the II”. Anthony’s full name is Michael Anthony Hall, but he changed it as many celebrities do upon joining the Screen Actors Guild in 1976.

Of their upcoming dive into parenthood this summer, he gushed, "my wife and I are feeling so blessed, excited and filled with joy in anticipation of our son being born this summer.”

Lucia took to Instagram to share their exciting news, with a post that also wished their fans a happy Valentine’s Day, tagging it “#babynews” and “#firsttimeparents”.

“Congratulations!” Wrote Boardwalk Empire actor Chris Caldovino, to the thanks of both expectant parents.

“I’ve been waiting FOREVER for the announcement of my new baby buddy! Love, love, love!” Declared one loved one, to whom Lucia responded that “it was starting to get hard to keep it a secret.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lucia Oskerova (@luciaoskerova)

Anthony had nothing but praise for his wife when asked about her pregnancy experience, telling People she’s been a “champ throughout”.

"She's tending to every important detail as a proud, expectant mother-to-be,” he explained. “She is now six and half months along.

"As a new father-to-be, I've been taking care of family business and making sure we all eat well, with a healthy diet of good foods — plenty of greens, vegetables, fresh fruit, and protein-rich food. Why Channel 7 is happy that Ally Langdon left her role on The Today Show

Channel 7 is secretly happy at the changes their competition Channel 9 has done to the breakfast show.

The broadcaster announced that Ally Langdon will leave her role on The Today Show to replace Tracy Grimshaw as host of A Current Affair.

60 Minutes reporter Sarah Abo will take over Ally’s place next to Karl Stefanovic in the new year.

But now insiders are saying that this change will see Channel 7 continue to beat Channel 9 in the breakfast TV show ratings.

“They’ve weakened their position in the real battleground. Anyone can host A Current Affair, but breakfast TV is a different game,” a Seven insider told Diary.

However, this is not the case from Channel 9’s perspective because of veteran Sunrise reporter David “Kochie” Koch limiting his workload in the new year.

Earlier this year, it was unclear whether or not Kochie will remain the face of Sunrise alongside Nat Barr.

But he was able to successfully negotiate more flexibility to spend more time with his family.

“After 20 years, I've felt I needed more flexibility in my life with my wife Libby and my business interests,” he told The Australian in October.

“So when I mentioned leaving to Seven, (CEO) James (Warburton) very kindly asked me whether we could work together on a plan that I wanted, which also kept my connection to the network and my focus on Sunrise.”

His decision is the only comfort that Channel 9 have at winning the breakfast show ratings after a very long time.

“Kochie leaving marks a huge opportunity for Today - there is no denying that,” a Nine insider said.

“He is a breakfast TV behemoth. He has underpinned Sunrise's dominance for two decades.

“The idea of a breakfast TV landscape without him gives Today clear air for the first time in 20 years and there is a real sense of opportunity here.

“It means Karl will now be the most senior presence on either show... and that could resonate with viewers.”

Image: Instagram

Chrissie, Sam & Browny to leave popular breakfast show

Nova’s breakfast show program featuring Chrissie Swan, Sam Pang and Jonathan ‘Browny’ Brown will stop airing at the end of the year after a huge seven years.

The trio announced the bombshell news to listeners on Friday morning - just hours after their colleague Kate Richie revealed that she is stepping back from the spotlight of her Nova FM show.

Chrissie, Sam & Browny’s last show will air on December 2 after their show sat on the #1 FM or #2 FM Melbourne breakfast show 19 times since it launched back in 2015.

This has now raised questions on whether or not Chrissie will be spending more time on The Project next year after Carrie Bickmore leaves the show at the end of the year.

Chrissie however will not be leaving the Nova Network entirely saying she is excited for her new adventure.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved professionally and personally since we first met in 2015 – especially the last few years as we all kept each other afloat during the pandemic,” she said.

“I’m thrilled to now put a bow on the absolute gift of the Chrissie, Sam & Browny experience and am looking forward to a new adventure with Nova.”

Sam also said he is looking forward to “sleeping in” after years of waking up early to host the radio show.

“It’s been a privilege doing breakfast radio in my hometown. I’ve loved my time at Nova and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the show over the past seven years,” he said.

“I would especially like to thank the listeners for their support. It has been a wonderful experience. I’ve made some life-long friends and feel very lucky to have worked with such an amazing team.”

Jonathan however will remain at the network as he continues to work with the Fox Footy team.

“When the opportunity presented itself to work alongside Chrissie, Sam and Deano seven years ago it cemented my family’s decision to make the move to Melbourne and start a new chapter post-footy,” he said.

“I’ve shared some life-changing moments with our listeners and the team have become like family to me.

“I’m grateful to the Nova family and our listeners for the opportunities in both Brisbane and Melbourne over the past 17 years and finish up feeling proud of what we’ve created together.”

Image: Nova

Australia’s top breakfast TV show hosts have attacked Meghan Markle for comparing herself to Nelson Mandela.

The Duchess of Sussex got candid in a tell-all interview with The Cut where she spoke about the Royal Family’s “red flags”, the difficulty of moving to California, losing her father and trying to "forgive" her in-laws.

The Suits actor was told by a cast member of the Lion King that South Africans “danced in the street” when she married Prince Harry - just like when “Mandela was freed from prison”.

The Today Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon, along with Sunrise co-host Natalie Barr have slammed Meghan Markle for her “tone deaf” interview.

“It's hard to see how that would sit with [the Royal Family], especially the Mandela references,” Karl said.

“That one, I feel, is tone-deaf,” Ally responded.

“I think [Meghan is] probably a little misunderstood, don't you reckon?” Karl then asked.

“Oh, you're changing your tune, are you, Karl?” Ally asked her co-host.

“Yeah, I think it's time to support her, especially after the Mandela comments. Anyone who compares themselves to Mandela, I think, is fair enough,” Karl responded.

“Even if it was said... to share that... Anyway, they're living their ‘quiet life’, as they wished,” Ally ended.

On Sunrise, Nat Barr called the Duchess a “tosser” for her comments in the interview saying she “couldn't even stomach getting through the whole article”.

“I think in Australia we'd say she's just full of it. She's a tosser. She's a total tosser! That's how we would describe her. I just can't... the way she speaks,” Nat said.

“I think she has a very different narrative, perhaps, in the U.S. to what is being accepted in the UK,” Edwina Bartholomew responded.

“Or just everywhere in the world!' Barr said.

Images: Seven/Nine

Ally Langdon left red-faced at Logies

Ally Langdon has been left red-faced after the weatherman from rival breakfast show Sunrise made a dig at the ratings.

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac and the Today co-host together presented the Logie Award for Most Outstanding Reality Program during the Logies on Sunday night.

Ally began with greeting the crowd before saying hello to her nemesis who then left her embarrassed.

“Hello to our rival breakfast show, the Today show, possibly our fiercest rivals behind the ABC,” Sam began to a laughing crowd.

Sam’s joke was in reference to The Today Show falling to third place behind both Sunrise and the ABC’s News Breakfast.

He then went on to call out her co-host Karl Stefanovic who didn’t help her down the stairs despite her injury.

The camera switched to a laughing Karl who was seen holding a drink and Panadol.

“Sorry I stopped listening two minutes ago, what was that?” Ally asked.

“We should be grateful that there's no egos in breakfast TV any more,' he replied sarcastically to which Ally just said “for sure”.

On Monday morning, Ally said she was feeling good as she and Karl began hosting the show.

“I'm actually feeling better than I thought I would be,” she said.

“Yeah, I'm not!” joked Karl.

Image: Nine

The 5 best films for cat lovers (that aren’t the movie Cats)

Traditionally, Boxing Day is a great day to go to the cinema in Australia. Previous offerings include Hitler comedy Jojo Rabbit, Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You and Cannes Film Festival hit Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Perhaps the strangest offering is Cats, the big screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, itself based on T.S. Eliot’s cycle of poems.

From the trailer, glimpses of a creepily transformed all-star cast (a sinisterly sibilant Judy Dench, Idris Elba and Taylor Swift to name but a few) and a darkly glamorous cat-fight vibe raised more than a few hackles – so much so, elements have been “subtly” reanimated. Reviews of the film have been overwhelmingly negative.

It remains to be seen whether Cats will land as deftly with film goers as it did in the theatre. But if nothing else, its release provides a timely reminder of how the big screen has gifted us many memorable feline performances.

Here are five of the very best.

Keanu (2016)

“That’s the cutest cat I’ve ever seen!”

No, it’s not a Disney movie or an internet meme; it’s a line that speaks for every adult male who crosses paths with the adorable tortoiseshell tabby kitten Keanu.

We first meet this eponymous feline amid the corpse-strewn detritus of a meth lab that has been shot up by two hefty gangster assassins.

Keanu’s escape to suburbia and subsequent kidnapping from his newly adopted human, the nerdy Rell (Jordan Peele) provides the catalyst for this delightfully idiotic buddy/action movie spoof.

Director Peter Alencio and writers Peele and Alex Rubens milk full comedic value from vicious killers turned into cooing, kitten kissing softies – and bumbling middle-class cowards Rell and Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) into badass, kitten rescuing heroes.

Viewers familiar with Peele’s directorial work will know he is no respecter of cuteness. Rest assured, a walk on the wild side only sees Keanu’s adorable qualities further enhanced by rocking a wicked black bandanna.

In a dream sequence, his voice is provided by some actor called Reeves.

Alien (1979); Aliens (1986)

Those with an attentive eye for cats on screen and/or for what makes feminist icon Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) tick won’t be surprised to see the trouble-making ginger Jonesy from the first two films in the Alien franchise on this list.

This (space) ship cat is no mere piece of fluff: he serves a significant plot function, raises tensions at key moments and importantly provides the first film’s only love interest.

Rescuing the moggy complicates Ripley’s escape and reveals a tender, protective side to her steely nature. This is even more powerfully highlighted in the sequel Aliens, even if Jonesy himself only makes a brief early appearance: “and you, you little shithead, you’re staying here”.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1962)

This iconic adaptation of Truman Capote’s novel frequently tops cat movie lists, but while I am more than happy to include Holly Golightly’s flatmate Cat, “poor slob without a name”, near the top of my list I must confess I’m no great fan of the film overall – a ham-fisted, sanitised Hollywood do-over.

Capote, as is well known, was not keen on the casting of Audrey Hepburn as drifter-turned-grifter Holly Golightly, apparently preferring Marilyn Monroe.

Little is known of his view of the casting of Orangey – an award-winning performer – as Cat, but for mine this handsome fellow is a far better actor than George Peppard, the film’s wooden, (Hollywood confected) male lead.

You don’t have to be a cat lover to know who Holly’s true soul mate is.

A Street Cat Named Bob (2016)

This adaptation of a best-selling book tells the true story of a homeless, heroin addict, James Bowen, (Luke Treadaway) who finds love and redemption when he meets Bob, a doughy but lovable ginger who chooses him as his human.

While James is busking or selling The Big Issue, Bob is perched on his shoulder and proves a magnet for punters. When Bob is injured in a fight, James takes on new responsibilities as provider and carer.

After a young friend dies from an overdose, James decides to get clean and is helped by the presence of the watchful, patient Bob.

Sure, it’s no Trainspotting, but there’s enough grit, vomit and despair to avoid the overly sentimental and Bob – played by none other than the real Bob himself – is a delight, exuding an aura of streetwise empathy to a kindred spirit, and adding a dash of mischief, too.

Kedi (2016)

Turkish director Ceyda Torun’s sublimely shot documentary focuses on Istanbul’s many thousands of street cats and the humans whose turf they share, who tend them and take solace in their company without seeking to constrain their freedom.

Torun skilfully intertwines the stories of several cats into the fabric of the places in which they (and, in some instances, their young) survive.

She captures them wandering through street markets, cafés, artists’ studios, workshops and patches of wasteland. We watch them hunting, scavenging and charming their way around fishing boats, riverbanks, tips, kitchens and jetties. They nip in and out of the windows of cramped, ageing flats, through backyards, shops and crowded alleys.

Kedi’s central message is that the centuries-long interdependence of human and feline – marked by easy tolerance, respect and not a little folklore and superstition – is a distinctive marker of Istanbul’s culture, one potentially under threat by the inexorable creep of high rise, urban redevelopment.

It should be cherished and preserved as a civilised and civilising point of pride.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

How coronavirus has changed how we enjoy hotel breakfasts

The new normal in hotel buffets

Who doesn’t love a good hotel buffet? They are cost-effective, delicious and it doesn’t matter if your eyes are bigger than your stomach.

There is something truly magical about groggily taking the lift down to the hotel lobby to find an expansive breakfast spread in front of you, but while still exciting, these moments will look a little different now due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We spoke to experts to see just what will be different about hotel buffets in a post-pandemic world.

No more serving yourself

One major change we might see at hotel buffets post-pandemic is that we won’t be the ones putting the food on our plates.

Guests will most likely just point to the food that they want behind plexiglass and servers will place the food on their dish.

“That way, only one person will be holding the serving utensils and guests may not have to wear gloves to prevent the transfer of bacteria,” says Laurie Wilkins, founder of Call Outdoors.

Hand sanitiser will become a staple

If you haven’t already noticed, hand sanitiser has become a staple everywhere and hotels are not the exception. Hand sanitising stations will likely be at various access points throughout the buffet.

“These hand sanitisers might also have a foot pump dispenser, so everything is hands-free,” claims Wilkins.

“Since there are many people coming to the restaurant, the surface of hand sanitiser bottles may potentially be unsanitary as well.”

Breakfast room will be sealed

Dining rooms will be closed in order to avoid unnecessary congregation and interaction between guests at some large hotel chains, such as Best Western.

Guests will eat in their own private spaces so everyone can maintain distance and limit contact.

Grab And Go options

Best Western is also enhancing its “Grab & Go” offerings, meaning that all food and beverage options will be pre-packaged to avoid contamination.

With pre-packaged options, guests will avoid unnecessary touching or breathing on the food and will also have limited contact with servers.

Waiter service

“The food will still be mass-produced but, instead of customers going up to grab food, they will order from the staff who will bring the food to you,” explains Raymond Cua, founder of Travelling Foodie.

“This will eliminate the need to have all the food displayed outside which is prone to contamination.”

Having a waitstaff can also prevent unnecessary contact with other guests as the only outside contact people will have is with their server.

Contactless ordering

Cua also claims that some hotels may implement contactless ordering with the use of a device rather than having a server physically come to take your order.

That way, the only contact will be the delivery of the food to the table.

Room service

“One possible action plan that hotels can do is to use room service as a platform to connect their customers to their hotel buffet offerings,” says Yaniv Masjedi, CMO at Nextiva.

“Customers can choose the food and drinks they like to eat and relay information to the front desk. Then, room service delivers orders. With this set-up, it helps prevent the spread of the virus by eliminating the chances of hotel guests interacting with one another.”

Hotel employees can also leave the food outside the door like many takeout places have been doing to limit face-to-face contact.

Directional buffets

For hotels that are still allowing for in-person buffets, guests will only be able to move in one direction while socially distanced – just like many stores that are placing directional arrows on the floor.

“Buffets will become more ‘directional’ with you needing to start on one end, and finish in another, for more traffic flow,” explains Alex Miller, CEO of Upgraded Points.com.

This article originally appeared in Reader's Digest.

Image: Channel 7

Sam Armytage has opened up about one of her most memorable moments as a co-host of Sunrise: the widely panned Sexy and the City skit featuring Kristin Davis that left viewers cringing in 2016.

Reflecting on the moment she was pushed by producers to a don a Carrie Bradshaw wig on live television, Sam said the swift fallout included “rape and death threats” that left her terrified in her own home.

At the time, Davis, who plays Charlotte in SATC, was in Sydney as an ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and looked visibly taken aback when Sam tossed her a script to re-enact a scene with Edwina Bartholomew as Samantha and Nat Barr as Miranda.

Muttering, “I don’t know if this is a great idea, frankly”, Davis later tweeted in response to a Sydney Morning Herald opinion piece which called the segment “gender-cringe TV at its worst”.

As a result, Sam was dropped as the MC for a UNCHR event.

Speaking on Chris Walker’s Brains Trust podcast this week, Sam opened up about the fallout of the failed comedy segment, revealing that she didn’t want to do the skit to begin with.

She began discussing her life in the spotlight as a Sunrise host, which she hosted opposite David Koch for eight years, before leaving the role in March.

In the interview, she said many days she’d find herself worrying about the day ahead from the moment she woke up.

"There were quite a few days in there where you’d wake up, and that split second when your eyes open and you think, ‘What giant sh*t storm is going to hit today?’”

Using Kristin Davis situation as an example, she went on to describe her confusion over being the one to bear the brunt of the backlash, despite the skit also involving Nat Barr and Edwina Bartholomew.

Calling the skit “dumb” she said, “Guess who got blamed for it? Me. I just sort of sat there and thought, why is all this stuff only happening to me?” she said, going on to explain how hesitant she was to go ahead in the first place.

“The day before that upstairs in the office when the producers were like ‘We’re gonna do this tomorrow,’ I just thought, ‘Really? That’s so lame.’"

“I’d have days where I was like….I’ve got a journalism degree, do I really have to do this stuff?’ But you do it because it's your job."

“It’s not the 7:30 report, I wasn’t under the illusion we had to be totally serious all the time. It but was the reaction to it that got me … it was very wearing, I had many moments where I was deeply upset and I had many, many times where I would call my mum in tears,” she explained.

When pressed for details on the extent of the backlash, Sam admitted it was “stuff you couldn’t even write”, including “death and rape threats”.

“It actually shocks me and saddens me that I became immune to that. Other people would be horrified whereas I had to go … ‘This is part of my life’.

“There were many times we had to have police outside my house, my house in the country was vandalised six times.

“You get to a point where you don’t feel safe (in your own home) which is part of the reason why I sold it in the end.

“(I was) living on my own with the dog and it was very, very unsafe at times. I’m not a Kardashian, I didn’t go into this to be famous … I’m a journalist by trade, so I just decided to step back and reset my life,” she concluded as the reason she resigned.

The 44-year-old left her role on the Channel 7 breakfast program in March after eight years at the helm, with Nat Barr taking on her role.
