Derryn Hinch confirms next big career move

Former Senator for Victoria and radio personality Derryn Hinch has revealed that he will be running for Lord Mayor of Melbourne this year.

A formal announcement will be made once he has found his deputy candidate.

The 80 year-old shock jock told the Herald Sun that he wanted to “get the city back on its feet” and fix problems with the city’s “woke council”.

He also told 3AW, the radio show he used to host, that he was planning to run with the slogan “Make Melbourne Magnificent”.

“We used to be so proud of this place,” he said. “Let’s do some things that’ll make us proud again.

“I’ve been getting hundreds of emails and Facebook posts with a lot of good ideas from people on what they’d like to see changed.”

He added that he would reveal further details on his policies later, but has said that one of the things he'd like to change is the graffiti in the city, which he believes “needs to be totally wiped out” and "tough penalties" should be given when people are caught.

"I have no illusions … that it’s gonna be hard work,” he said. “I’ll be doing my best to win”.

He also said he wanted to investigate if property owned by the city council can be converted into further Melbourne housing.

Hinch also said that he is looking for a female running mate who has state or council experience.

The shock jock speculated that he would be running against Sally Capp, the current Lord Mayor of Melbourne, who has been in the role of Lord Mayor for two terms over six years, and may run again in October.

Hinch has been in journalism for 63 years and moved into politics in 2015. He served as Senator for Victoria from 2016 to 2019, and only dissolved his party last year.

Image: Getty

Abdallah family confirms heartwarming news

Three years after the tragic loss of their three children in a horrific car crash, Danny and Leila Abdallah have announced the are expecting another baby.

In 2020, the Abdallah's life was turned upside down when their children Antony, 13, Angelina, 12, Sienna, eight, and their niece Veronique Sakr, 11, were hit by a car on their way to buy ice cream.

The couple welcomed a baby girl in March 2022, and have now announced that their family is growing once again.

Danny Abdallah announced the heartwarming news on 2GB on Wednesday morning saying, “Leila’s well, she’s pregnant again. I got one past the goalkeeper! And yeah, she’s been pretty busy with the kids.”

He said the family are “OK, as good as can be”.

With another baby on the way, the couple will be the parents of five children, as well as the three killed in the tragedy.

The crash that claimed the lives of the Abdallah children happened in December 2020, when Samuel William Davidson was driving recklessly and mounted the curb at high speed before striking the children in his ute.

Davidson later pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter and charges related to injuries sustained by three other children involved in the crash.

Initially, he was sentenced in April 2021 to 28 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 21 years.

However, in 2022, his sentence was reduced by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal to 20 years, with a non-parole period of 15 years, as they deemed the original sentence excessively harsh.

Despite the devastating situation, the Abdallahs forgave the driver just days after he wiped out half of their family.

Mr Davidson thanked the family for their forgiveness, motivating him to change his ways while in prison.

Australian grandmother confirmed dead in Hamas attacks

The first Australian victim in the devastating Hamas attacks in Israel has been confirmed as a Sydney-born grandmother.

Galit Carbone, 66, was found outside her home in a small Israel community, 5km from the Gaza Strip, after being killed in a "senseless act of violence".

The Carbone's, along with the Australian Jewish community, are "heartbroken" over her untimely death.

Galit's cousin Julian Cappe and his wife Lisa, who live in Rose Bay, told the Herald Sun that the family in Israel were in “a state of numb shock” as they tried to put the pieces together of her horrifying final moments.

“Over the last few days they’ve just gone through all the ranges of emotion, from hearing what happened to thinking that she’s been a prisoner to hearing confirmation that she was killed,” he said.

Mr Cappe said the family’s grief had been magnified by the brutal nature her death.

“The idea that terrorists could walk into such a peaceful place and find an elderly, a 66 year old lady, and other elderly people and gun them down in cold blood. It’s just devastating to feel that such a thing could happen,” he said.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said she was “devastated” by the news.

“This is heartbreaking news this morning for the family of (Ms Carbone), her community here in Australia … our hearts absolutely go out to her,” she told 7News.

“I’m devastated for the people who knew her, but also the broader Jewish Australian community."

“We’ve got brothers and sisters of the Jewish religion around our country who are suffering greatly from what is a brutal, violent, abhorrent and completely unjustified act of terrorism against their country and their citizens.

“What’s happened here is a senseless act of violence, that will get more violent, and the Australian government condemns it in the strongest possible terms.”

After being born and raised in Sydney, Galit Carbone decided to relocate to raise her children, as she moved to Israel where she was working as a librarian.

Image credits: Courtesy of the Carbone family

Woman's identity confirmed after tragic death on Qatar Airways flight

Sharon Gordon has been identified as the woman who died on board a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Sydney over the weekend.

The 60-year-old was a customer service station attendant at Wynyard Station, and was on a solo flight home after visiting her daughter in London.

Halfway into the 14-hour flight, Gordon had reportedly started gasping and was found unresponsive.

Another passenger, her husband and baby were seated a row in front of Gordon, when they heard her making a "weird noise".

The female passenger was woken by the noise and had to look around in the dark to figure out what was going on.

“She looked like she was sleeping, but she was making this really loud noise,” she told 7News.

She claimed that a stewardess checked on Gordon, before two more joined her and brought oxygen.

“But then they just left,” the female passenger added.

The couple claimed that they were told by staff that “everything was all right," but “you could see she wasn’t breathing."

Around 20 minutes later, four different stewards arrived and lifted Gordon off her seat before giving her CPR and starting a defibrillator.

“I turned around and looked at the lady and she was very pale and her lips were white,” the female passenger added.

“At that point, my husband and I thought that she was dead.”

She described Gordon as "limp" and asked “why didn’t they do that a half hour earlier?”

An hour after Gordon's first gasps, they made an announcement asking if there were any doctor's or nurses on board.

Now, Gordon's family are desperate for answers, with 7News reporting that her family have requested help from the federal government after the airline said they did everything they could.

“I love her and will miss her so much,” Gordon's partner Rob Bray told the publication.

“Mother to Cameron and Ashley. She will be so sorely missed by us all.

“Her workmates at Wynyard Station are devastated.”

A Qatar Airways spokesperson previously told the publication: “Regrettably, the lady could not be revived.”

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”

Image: 7News/ Getty

Robert De Niro’s grandson's official cause of death confirmed

Robert De Niro’s grandson Leandro De Niro Rodriguez’s cause of death has been confirmed.

The 19-year-old died from a "toxic" combination of drugs, a New York City Medical Examiner told Page Six on Tuesday.

Autopsy results revealed that the late teen had fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine and cocaine in his system at the time of his death, which has been ruled as an "accident".

Sophia Marks, 20, has been arrested in connection to Leandro's overdose.

According to criminal reports obtained by Page Six, the texts between Leandro and Marks allege that she had warned him about the fentanyl-laced pills, as they discussed the purchase of counterfeit oxycodone and Xanax just days before his death.

Police also believe that Marks allegedly sold pills to children as young as 15.

This comes just one month after De Niro’s daughter Drena claimed that her son passed away after a tragic drug accident.

“Someone sold him fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him,” she wrote in response to a comment on one of her posts at that time.

“For all these people still f***ing around selling and buying this s**t, my son is gone forever,” she added.

Drena who is still processing her grief, continues to post memories of her son, with the most recent one a heartbreaking tribute marking the first month since his passing.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Australian researchers confirm world’s first case of dementia linked to repetitive brain trauma in a female athlete

Stephen Townsend, The University of Queensland; Alan Pearce, La Trobe University, and Rebecca Olive, RMIT University

Researchers at the Australian Sports Brain Bank have today reported the world’s first diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a female athlete.

With the consent of her family, the diagnosis was made on the brain of Heather Anderson, a 28-year-old AFLW athlete who died last November. Heather’s family donated her brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank hoping to better understand why she died.

The findings, which Professor Alan Pearce co-authored with the Australian Sports Brain Bank, raise questions about how a lifetime of contact sport may have contributed to her death. They come as Australia’s Senate inquiry works on its report into concussions and repeated head trauma in contact sport, due in August.

Given how hard women have fought to participate in football codes and contact sports in recent years, this diagnosis has major implications for women’s sport in Australia. It also highlights the significant lack of research about women athletes in sport science and medicine.

What is chronic traumatic encephalopathy?

CTE is a devastating form of dementia which causes a decline in brain functioning and increased risk of mental illness. It is increasingly associated with athletes who play contact sports, such as football, boxing and martial arts.

It is incurable and can only be diagnosed post-mortem. Recently, a number of high-profile former Australian footballers were found to have been suffering from CTE when they died, including former AFL stars Danny Frawley and Shane Tuck, and former NRL player and coach Paul Green.

Adelaide AFLW premiership player Heather Anderson dies aged 28 https://t.co/ihy2i9UcRl

— ABC News (@abcnews) November 14, 2022

Concussions in contact sports have long been associated with long-term neurodegeneration in Australia and internationally. While the public and researchers are rightly concerned about serious concussions, a study published last month in Nature Communications confirmed that repetitive brain trauma over time – even seemingly mild head knocks or whiplash – is the strongest predictor for an athlete developing CTE. Athletes with long careers in contact sport are at particular risk, especially if they play from an early age.

A sporting life

Heather Anderson began playing rugby league at age five before transferring to Australian rules football in her early teens. She played representative football in the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory before being drafted into the inaugural season of the AFLW in 2017.

Anderson played a single season with the Adelaide Crows, during which she won a premiership and suffered a career-ending shoulder injury. She then returned to her role as a medic with the Australian Army, a physical career which also carries a heightened risk of brain injury.

Anderson’s family donated her brain in the hope of knowing whether a lifetime of exposure to repetitive head trauma contributed to her death.

Was this diagnosis expected?

Concussion researcher Anne McKee predicted earlier this year it was a matter of time before CTE was found in the brain of a woman athlete.

The Australian Sports Brain Bank team believe Anderson is a “sentinel case” we can learn from. She is the first female athlete diagnosed with CTE, but she will not be the last.

Although Australian women have historically been excluded from the sports most associated with repeated head injuries, this is changing. In 2022, there were almost one million women and girls playing some form of contact sport in Australia. As women’s participation in contact sport continues to grow, so too does their risk of repetitive brain trauma.

Are women more prone to CTE than men?

There is emerging evidence that women are at significantly higher risk of mild traumatic brain injury (concussion) and may suffer more severe symptoms.

Concussion alone does not cause CTE, but an athlete’s number of concussions is a reliable indicator of their cumulative exposure to brain trauma, which is the biggest predictor of CTE.

While knowledge on the topic is still developing, researchers propose a mix of physiological and social explanations for women’s increased concussion risk. These include "[…] differences in the microstructure of the brain to the influence of hormones, coaching regimes, players’ level of experience and the management of injuries."

More research is needed to understand sporting brain injuries specifically in women and girls. Tragic confirmation of Julian Sands' death

Missing British actor Julia Sands has been confirmed dead at age 65.

Californian hikers discovered human remains in the surrounding area where the actor was said to have vanished, and the remains have now been identified as Sands, according to authorities.

"The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood," the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results," it continued.

"We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands.”

Sands’ tragic death comes days after a search and rescue was resumed by the San Bernardino Sherrif’s Office, which had been leading the searches for the missing actor over the past six months.

The local region experienced wild and uncharacteristic weather which led to a more difficult search.

Sands was first reported missing in January after setting out to hike the notoriously dangerous Mount Baldy, which rises more than 10,000 feet (approx. 3048 metres) east of Los Angeles and has been hit with severe storms during their winter season.

"We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer," the statement said.

Sands’ family released a statement at the time of his disappearance, saying, "Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department who are coordinating the search for our beloved Julian, not least the heroic search teams listed below who are braving difficult conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home,”

Sands’ son Henry also released a statement in April to praise the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department for their continued efforts in rescuing his father.

"I am hugely appreciative for all the efforts made so far from the volunteer search and rescue climbers and the San Bernardino county sheriff team to bring my father home," Henry Sands told The Times.

Kochie responds to Chris Brown rumours as his replacement is confirmed

Sunrise viewers are set to see a new face alongside Natalie Barr following the news of Kochie’s shock departure.

One famous face in particular was rumoured to fill his shoes, but Channel 7 has now confirmed his successor has been appointed, with an announcement to be made on Monday, June 5.

Kochie will host his final edition of Sunrise on Friday, June 9.

The TV presenter, who holds the title of the longest-serving breakfast host in Australian history, will remain a valued part of the Sunrise team and the Seven Network, covering big financial news as a “guest rather than host”.

Kochie was visibly emotional when he shared with viewers that he was stepping away from the “world’s best job”.

Fellow presenters Natalie Barr, Lisa Wilkinson and Sam Mac posted online to praise and congratulate him on his 21-year run on the show.

Following his announcement, Kochie appeared on The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

Sandilands asked Kochie if there was any truth to the rumour that ABC presenter Stan Grant, who recently resigned from hosting Q+A, would be taking over his role.

“Um, no, I don’t think so,” he replied.

Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson proceeded to speculate over who is and isn’t likely to fill the position, including Today host Karl Stefanovic and former Channel 10 star Dr Chris Brown, who is making his way to Seven in July 2023.

“Well, it’s obvious they’re not going to take Karl,” Sandilands teased.

“And it’s not going to be Dr Chris Brown either, is it?” Henderson asked, to which Kochie just laughed.

“No, you can’t put a vet on there,” Sandilands joked. “How insulting. That’s like saying Mr Whippy’s gonna come and take over my job, like come on man, that’s ridiculous.”

When pushed for a clue as to who his replacement might be, Kochie told the hosts that there is “plenty of great talent working on Sunrise”.

“Look, to use football parlance, I’ve talked to the list managers, it’s time for the next generation to come through and they've got a lot to choose from,” he said.

“All will be revealed next Monday, and then I leave on Friday.”

Kochie also shared he won’t be moving back to his hometown of Adelaide when he finishes up with Sunrise.

“I will stay here in Sydney,” he said. “Our kids are here, grandkids are here, and our family business is here.”

In a statement from Channel Seven Kochie explained that he believes it’s time to change his routine after spending 21 years of waking up at the crack of dawn.

“I know I'm going to miss it enormously, but it's time for me to work business hours, and for (his wife) Libby and I to have a bit more flexibility to enjoy our burgeoning family, to travel and focus on our family business interests in Pinstripe Media and the Ausbiz business channel,” he said.

“As everyone knows, I'm a finance nerd so you'll still see me pop up every so often on RBA board meeting days or covering other big financial news, but as a guest rather than host.

“Coming up to 20 consecutive years as Australia's most-watched breakfast show is a nice moment to exit stage left with an enormous sense of pride and gratitude. Thank you for the privilege.”

Rolf Harris' cause – and date – of death confirmed

Rolf Harris’ cause of death has been revealed following the announcement of his passing after a battle with neck cancer.

While the information was made public on May 23, his death certificate states he died several weeks ago.

On May 11, it was speculated that Harris was gravely ill after an ambulance was spotted outside his UK home.

However, it wasn’t until May 23 that his death was confirmed.

The date of his death on the certificate was listed as May 10, one day before the ambulance was seen.

The cause of death was listed as squamous cell carcinoma of neck – neck cancer – and “fragility of old age”.

It was first revealed in late 2022 that Harris had been severely ill and struggled to communicate with people.

The gap between the date of his passing and his death certificate allowed the family to hold a funeral for Harris and cremate him away from the public eye.

In a short statement released by his family, they said Harris “died peacefully surrounded by family and friends and has now been laid to rest”.

Harris lived with his wife of 65 years, Alwen Hughes, 91, who has Alzheimer’s disease. Both needed round the clock care.

Private investigator and author William Merrit told the Daily Mail Harris was gravely ill when he saw him in 2022.

“Rolf has been very sick. When I saw him he was able to speak to me. He was with it, but he was obviously unwell,” he said.

A neighbour also shared Harris’ health had declined after the death of his poodle, Bumble in 2022.

“Only carers and nurses, who care for him 24 hours, come and go. I’m told he can’t eat anymore,” they said.

Harris was born in 1930 in Bassendean, in Perth’s north east.

He was a champion swimmer in his youth before moving to London in the early 50s’, where he studied art.

After getting early gigs working as a performer and illustrator for the BBC and ITV, he rose to fame for his art and music.

In 2005, Queen Elizabeth sat for a portrait with him.

Harris received several awards and honours, most of which were taken away. He had been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1968 and was appointed to the Order of Australia (AM), where he later advanced to Officer (AO) in 2012.

He was thrust into the spotlight in 2013 after being arrested as part of a UK police investigation into a string of sexual offences. He was also accused of taking indecent images of children.

He stood trial in June 2014 and was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against four teenage girls between 1968 and 1986, one of which was later appealed. He was sentenced to jail for five years and nine months.

Harris was released from Stafford Prison in England’s midlands in mid-2017 after three years behind bars and was rarely spotted in public afterwards.

He stood trial again in mid-2017 for separate cases of sexual assault, involving seven complainants aged between 12 and 27 at the time of the alleged incidents. He was found not guilty on three counts and was cleared after the jury failed to reach a verdict on four other counts.

Palace confirms Prince George's role at Coronation

As King Charles' highly-anticipated Coronation ceremony draws closer, the Palace has confirmed a very special role for Prince George.

Just one month before the historic event is set to take place at Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace has shared that the King's eldest grandson will have a key role at the coronation, acting as one of the four page boys attending to the King throughout the ceremony.

In total eight pages will be involved, four assigned to the King and four to the Queen Consort.

Joining Prince George, who will be nine at the time of the coronation, assisting the King as pages will be Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, Nicholas Barclay and Ralph Tollemache.

Camilla will have her grandsons, Gus and Louis Lopes, 13, and Freddy Parker Bowles, 13, helping her and along with her great-nephew, Arthur Elliot.

The news of Prince George's involvement comes as the Palace has released the official coronation portrait, which was taken last month inside the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace by Hugo Burnand.

In addition to the official portraits, the Palace shared an image of the elaborately illustrated invitation that will be sent out later this month to 2,000 guests who have secured a much-coveted place at the Coronation.

As stated on the invitation, it has been revealed that "Consort" will be dropped from Camilla's official title, as she will be referred to as "Queen Camilla" after the Coronation.

The invitation reads, "The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla."

When asked about the title, a senior royal aide confirmed, "It made sense to refer to her Majesty as The Queen Consort in the early months of His Majesty’s reign, to distinguish from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

"Queen Camilla is the appropriate title to set against King Charles on the invitation. The Coronation is an appropriate time to start using 'Queen Camilla' in an official capacity."

Image credits: Buckingham Palace / Getty Images

Harry and Meghan finally confirm their kids’ titles

Harry and Meghan have reportedly confirmed the royal titles of their children, Archie and Lilibet, in a statement.

The pair also revealed that young Lilibet had been christened in a quiet ceremony at home in California, and it was one glaring detail that caught the attention of eagle-eyed readers.

“Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on Friday, March 3 by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, the Rev John Taylor,” a statement to People read.

The same publication reported that the ceremony was attended by around 20 to 30 people, and that Meghan’s mother - Doria Ragland - and actor Tyler Perry - who is Lilibet’s godfather - were there. The British royals, despite the Sussexes having “extended an invite to King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton” did not attend.

Buckingham Palace later confirmed that the line of succession list on its website would be updated to reflect this.

Archie and Lilibet had been awarded the title of prince and princess when Harry’s father, King Charles III, had inherited the throne. However, Buckingham Palace’s website had listed them as “master” and “miss” respectively, and their true titles had remained a widely debated issue upon the Duke and Duchess’ move from the United Kingdom to the United States.

And in 2021, during an interview with Oprah, Meghan even claimed that the palace “didn’t want him [Archie] to become a prince.”

She went on to explain that while the titles weren’t important to her, through her pregnancy she and Harry had the same concerns for their son should he not be recognised as a prince.

And before Archie’s birth, he had allegedly been offered the courtesy title of ‘Earl of Dumbarton’, but his parents turned it down.

“They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton,” a source told The Telegraph at the time, “because it began with the word ‘dumb’ [and] they were worried about how that might look.”

Under rules established by King George V in 1917, prince or princess was a title only given to the monarch’s grandchildren through the male line, and one other family member - but not the great grandchildren. The only other family member in the direct line of succession entitled to the title is the eldest great grandson.

George, William and Kate’s eldest, holds the title of prince through this ruling. And in 2012, the late queen changed the rules so that the couples’ youngest children, Charlotte and Louis, might also carry the titles of princess and prince.

However, upon Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Archie and Lilibet became the acting monarch’s grandchildren, and questions over what titles they would bear began anew.

Questions that have now, apparently, been answered.

Images: Netflix

Harry and Meghan’s eviction confirmed

Harry and Meghan have been asked to vacate their British residence, Frogmore Cottage on the grounds of King Charles’ Windsor Castle estate, a statement has confirmed.

“We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage,” said a spokesperson for the couple.

Charles’ decision comes as just another stage in the fallout of Harry’s memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry made numerous revelations about the royal family, and none have taken too kindly to it, especially not when considering the couple’s Netflix documentary and TV interviews.

While Buckingham Palace has not yet publicly addressed the report, many have begun to speculate, and The Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers told Today that King Charles III did in fact come to his drastic decision because of the book.

“Apparently the King has had enough,” Myers began, ”and whether he asked them to leave or told them to leave, the result is still the same.”

As with most recent discussions involving the royals, the question of whether or not Harry and Meghan would attend Charles’ coronation quickly arose. Myers seemed to be of the opinion that Harry wouldn’t dare, as this latest rejection seemed likely to be “the final nail in the coffin.”

“I have always said that Harry and Meghan have to have this big currency,” he added, “all they talk about is their relationship with the royal family, and you can bet your bottom dollar that relationship is in the gutter now.

"I can't imagine any of the family would want to see them, but you never know with them, they might turn up for a couple of days."

It was reported by The Sun newspaper that King Charles has offered the house to his brother, Andrew. However, they added that Andrew would prefer to stay in his current home.

"There are a lot of royal residences and pretty much not enough royals to put in them," Myers said of the situation.

"Andrew can't afford it, he’s having his wings clipped, and he's not going to get the big allowance he had when the Queen was still with us,” he went on. “Everyone has to tighten their belts.

"Andrew is still digging his heels in. He says he doesn't want to leave Royal Lodge, but I don't think he will have any choice at the end of the day."

Images: Getty

Anthony Albanese confirms changes to superannuation

Australia’s super rich are set to pay more on their superannuation funds, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed.

The announcement came one week after Treasurer Jim Chalmers declared there would be a review of the superannuation scheme’s future, and that the proposed changes would only impact about 0.5% of Australians, with the added benefit of saving the budget $2b.

The changes would see Australians with over $3m in their super accounts have their concessional tax rate doubled - from 15 per cent to 30 per cent - and won’t be effective until around 2025-26. On average, Australians have about $150,000 in their super accounts. However, for the 80,000 individuals with over $3m to their name, the average rises to a substantial $6m.

The remainder, the other 99.5 per cent of Australians, are set to continue receiving the same tax breaks as they were before, according to Chalmers.

Albanese has now stated that this marks an “important reform” and would not alter the fundamentals of the existing system, and if anything would only serve to make it stronger.

“With 17 people having over $100 million in their superannuation accounts, one individual with over $400 million in his or her account, most Australians would agree that this is not what superannuation is for. It’s for people’s retirement incomes,” he explained. “Confronted with this information, it would be irresponsible to not take any action whatsoever. This reform will strengthen the system by making it more sustainable.”

In a statement, Chalmers expanded on the situation, saying, “the majority of these super tax breaks go to high income earners.

“For instance, over 55 per cent of the benefit of superannuation tax breaks on earnings flow to the top 20 per cent of income earners, with 39 per cent going to the top 10 per cent of income earners.”

Chalmers also explained how the government inherited $1 trillion of debt, and that it was becoming increasingly more expensive with rising interest rates.

“We have persistent and growing spending pressures,” he explained. “Budget pressures are intensifying, rather than easing. This is the mess that we were left with and this is the mess we’re trying to clean up.

“This announcement is part of the effort. Every dollar spent on a tax break with tens of millions of dollars in super, is a borrowed dollar that makes the deficit bigger.”

He added that higher earners would still receive tax concessions, although people shouldn’t expect them to be quite as generous anymore.

“I’m confident that Australians will see this change as modest, reasonable, and fair. But one which makes a difference to the sustainability and affordability of the superannuation system that we cherish.”

Anthony Albanese assured Australians that the changes did not mean that the concessional tax would be altered for the remaining 99.5 per cent of Australians.

“People can see what we’re doing here,” he said. “Which is why we’re proposing a change that will have an impact on 0.5 per cent of the population. There will be no changes this term [to super]. Even this change.

“We can’t be clearer.”

Images: Getty

"It's daunting": A Current Affair and Today show hosts finally confirmed

After several weeks of rumours and speculation, the new host of A Current Affair has finally been announced.

In September, Tracy Grimshaw announced she would be leaving the show after 17 long years in the hosting chair, with her last day at the program recapping her most memorable moments.

Now, it has been confirmed that the prestigious hosting spot will be filled by Ally Langdon.

After appearing on the Today Show alongside co-host Karl Stefanovic since January 2020, Langdon admits the new role is "daunting", but is excited for the challenge.

She said, "It is such an incredible honour to be joining the A Current Affair team. A show I love, respect and have been watching since I was in school and Jana Wendt was host."

"I won't lie – it's daunting to be stepping into the role that Tracy has so brilliantly navigated for the past 17 years, with such warmth and compassion. I hope to bring my own warmth and compassion to the show as we continue to tell great stories that matter to our amazing viewers."

A Current Affair was created and originally hosted by Langdon's late father-in-law Mike Willesee and she will be its sixth host.

Nine's Director of News and Current Affairs, Darren Wick, said, "Ally is a natural fit to lead A Current Affair into a new era. She was raised in the country and has a deep commitment to family, friends and community."

"She's passionate, curious and razor sharp – loyal to her colleagues, dedicated to her craft and determined to fight for her viewers. We're very excited to see what Ally will bring to ACA in 2023 and for many, many years beyond."

Ally is set to start hosting ACA in 2023.

Leaving a chair empty at the Today Show with her departure, Langdon will be replaced by 60 Minutes reporter Sarah Abo.

"I am thrilled to be joining the wonderful and hard-working team at Today, who manage to inform the nation every morning while also having a lot of fun," said Abo.

"I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside some of the country's finest journalists at 60 Minutes and travel the nation and world bringing stories to Australian audiences. It is an absolute privilege to meet so many inspirational people and help tell their stories. I can't wait to put everything I've learned from those amazing experiences into my new role at Today.

"The 3am alarm will be an adjustment, but I'm looking forward to keeping Karl on his toes. I know Ally will make a success of the move to ACA and I can't wait to watch her in the chair."

Kyle “confirms” new host of A Current Affair

Kyle Sandilands could not hold his tongue any longer and has revealed that Ally Langdon will be replacing Tracey Grimshaw as host of A Current Affair.

The radio shock jock was speaking to Grimshaw on his show just two days before she leaves the show after 17 years as the face of the news program.

He told Grimshaw that he had a conversation with Today Show co-host Karl Stefanovic who all but confirmed that Langdon will be replacing Grimshaw.

“I feel like I know, because I've been speaking to [Karl] Stefanovic,” he said.

“Well, let me just tell everyone it is Ally. I don't mean to bust Channel Nine's bubble.”

Sandilands claims that Stefanovic didn’t ask him to keep quiet about it and that he thought it was okay to share the news.

“Maybe that was a personal chat? I don't know... But he didn't ask me not to say anything.”

Grimshaw however remained coy about who will be replacing her in the top chair but said everything could be out as early as next week.

“I can't possibly give you a hint, but you'll know very soon,” she said.

“I wouldn't be surprised if you know next week.”

The news comes a week after Sandilands grilled Langdon about her new position about a noticeable disappearance from the breakfast show.

“Are you doing A Current Affair or not?” Sandilands asked.

“Well, I'm going to do the Today show, I'm going to do A Current Affair, I'm going to coach the Wallabies and I reckon Dan Andrews might offer me a ministry,” she responded.

This did not stop Sandilands who told Langdon to answer the question.

“Let's stop the speculation. Are you doing A Current Affair? Just tell us!”

Langdon remained tightlipped and would not budge.

Watch this space.

Images: Facebook

Monetary help confirmed for Victoria’s flood victims

After wild weather drenched Victoria and flooded about 500 homes, Premier Daniel Andrews has announced that financial support will be available to those affected.

On Friday morning, the Maribyrnong River burst its banks and made inner Melbourne the latest community caught up in the state’s flooding emergency.

Mr Andrews announced the payments would be available to help those affected “to help with food, shelter, clothing and medication”.

Emergency payments are available for people whose homes have been impacted by flooding to help with food, shelter, clothing and medication.

You can apply online at https://t.co/K0Dqh4hS9T

— Dan Andrews (@DanielAndrewsMP) October 13, 2022

Record-breaking rain has seen waterway levels rapidly rise, with residents in the areas surrounding the Maribyrnong River being urged to evacuate earlier this morning.

"Some are waking up to find floodwater right at their door," 3AW's Pat Mitchell told Today.

"I have spoken to some people getting their cars out, moving things to higher ground before they leave. Really, they haven't had a lot of time."

Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore at the Bureau of Meteorology said people in north-west Melbourne could expect “major flooding” as the morning progressed.

"We're expecting the flood peak to occur later this morning into later this afternoon, into the upper reaches of the Maribyrnong River then to the more populated areas to the west of Melbourne into this afternoon and into this evening," he said.

"Thankfully the rain has eased, so we're expecting it to peak into tonight and start easing quickly into tomorrow."

Tim Wiebusch, the chief operations officer of Victoria SES, said Maribyrnong residents could expect the flood threat to remain for the next 24 to 28 hours, and that there was flooding “pretty much right across the state”.

"But we've also got the Yarra river with all our bike paths, all our recreation reserves that are now underwater at minor flooding," he said.

"So people need to be aware that our rivers are in flood pretty much right across the state now."

Residents in Wedderburn, Carisbrook, Seymour, Benalla and Rochester have been urged to evacuate, while some along the Seven Creeks and Goulburn and Campaspe rivers were told to head to higher ground.

currently stuck in seymour whilst en route from melbourne to albury. @VLine coaches ‘promised’ to meet us here after boarding at broadmeadows non-existent.
big love to the staff here at seymour station, doing the best they can with no info in this wild weather 💕 #vicfloods pic.twitter.com/x0aVqWObsw

— Madeleine Sargent (@madeleinecate) October 13, 2022

SES Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp said that despite the rising water levels, they are hoping that they will quickly lower again.

The water has already started to recede in Seymour, but some residents still saw their homes taken over by water.

"I just came to have a look, and my house is just down that street, so I would say that it's gone underwater," one woman told Today.

"Pretty sad to look at.
