Harry and Meghan break their silence on "boring and baseless" South Park episode

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken their silence after being portrayed in an episode of South Park, in which they were ruthlessly mocked and ridiculed.

The animated TV show released their newest episode, titled The Worldwide Privacy Tour, which depicted the royal couple embarking on a promotional tour for the Prince's new book titled "Waaaah".

After the episode aired, reports emerged that Meghan Markle was left "upset and overwhelmed" by their merciless slating on the show, while a royal commentator speculated that the couple's lawyers were "casting an eye" over the cartoon series.

Despite these claims, a spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has debunked rumours that they would be suing South Park over the episode, blasting the claims as "boring and baseless" in a statement given to Newsweek.

The statement did not mention Harry and Meghan's personal feelings towards the episode, nor did it address claims that the couple's lawyers will be monitoring the show in order to see whether South Park's creators launch any fresh attacks on the pair in the future.

U.S. royal commentator Kristen Meinzer also told Newsweek that is was easy to see why the couple were not taking legal action.

She said, "I highly doubt Meghan and Harry are suing a satirical cartoon that famously ridicules everyone."

"If anything, they'll know they're in good company with other decent people who've been raked over the coals by the show."

"For example, South Park has repeatedly ridiculed Al Gore and his efforts to combat climate change. They made fun of Steve Irwin for being killed by a stingray just a few weeks after his death."

"They turned Rob Reiner into a punchline because of his weight. They've never been a bastion of good taste, and they've absolutely been offensive, but again, they're also a cartoon, not a news outlet—and Harry and Meghan are unlikely to take a cartoon to court."

A very special episode

We all know what we should do. We should eat well and exercise. But then there’s ice cream and alcohol and the couch …

But what if watching TV could actually be good for you — if your favourite TV show could inspire and support you to be healthier?

In 2012, on 90210 (a reboot of the 90s’ Beverly Hills, 90210), 18-year-old Erin Silver (Jessica Stroup) was confronted with the choice to test for BRCA gene mutations. Her mother died from breast cancer, and if Erin had a mutation she was at elevated risk of cancer herself.

The show’s creators worked with Hollywood, Health & Society, an organisation established to provide the entertainment industry with expert information on health, safety and security.

In getting the health information right, 90210 was able to tell a compelling and dramatic story while engaging viewers with their own health.

After the show aired, a study found 12% of female viewers reported scheduling a doctor’s appointment to discuss their breast cancer risk, 13% talked about the BRCA gene with a woman they knew and 17% searched for more information about breast cancer online.

Many non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers can be can be prevented by modifying behaviour such as tobacco use, dietary habits and physical activity. But the rise of such diseases shows current methods of health communication are inadequate.

Television can not only provide you health information, but can also motivate you to do what’s good for you.

Entertainment can harm

Entertainment that canvases health issues can lead to misinformation. This can be really harmful.

Mental illness is commonly misrepresented in films and on television, contributing to stigma which can have a profoundly negative impact of the well-being of people living with mental illness.

A particularly sobering example was seen after the release of 13 Reasons Why, a Netflix series about the aftermath of a suicide. In the month following the first season release in 2017, the suicide rates in Americans between the ages of 10 and 17 increased 28.9% and remained elevated for a further two months.

13 Reasons Why was criticised for overlooking media guidelines against stories promoting simplistic explanations of suicidal behaviour or depicting suicide as a means of accomplishing a goal.

If the series had followed best practice guidelines in telling this story, the outcomes may not have been so devastating.

The positive power of narrative

But entertainment can also have a powerful positive impact on health.

In 2001, Hollywood, Health & Society worked with The Bold and the Beautiful on a story where Antonio Dominguez (Paulo Benedeti) learned he was HIV positive. An HIV/AIDS hotline was presented at the conclusion of the episode, and calls increased dramatically.

In 2006, the organisation worked with Numbers on an episode where Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz) changes his position on organ donation, telling his family he would like to be a donor.

After the episode aired, audiences were found to be more likely to register as organ donors and encourage others.

Confidence in the truth

In decision making, we naturally give greater weight to narrative evidence than statistical evidence. This is increased in situations of high emotional engagement such as related to health.

By embedding health storylines in popular narratives we can reach audiences where they are. But the spread of contested health information has led to growing public scepticism.

It is important to present accurate information in a way that is responsible and adheres to best practice to build audience confidence.

While Hollywood, Health & Society does important work in providing information to the entertainment industry, viewers don’t know if this content is trustworthy, and there is no method to ensure stories are told in the most impactful way.

If we had a widely used methodology to guide the development of entertainment produced in partnership between the entertainment industry, health and science experts and consumers to promote health, we could make a big difference.

Scripted television and movies could be the next big thing in health promotion. But we need artists, health experts and audiences working together.

Creating a road map

We lack a pathway for health experts, health bodies and people with lived experience to create stories to promote health.

My research team is working on identifying the characteristics of entertainment which can successfully influence health behaviours. This could be having characters key audiences can identify with, and having those characters engage in healthy behaviours related to their well-being.

We are establishing a consortium of policy makers, health experts, entertainment industry professionals and audiences to guide the production of entertainment-driven content to promote health.

Television episodes and films produced following this method will be certified as scientifically accurate. When you watch it, you will know the information delivered is trustworthy.

It will be produced using the best knowledge about how to support people to take charge of their health. It will impact attitudes and behaviours that can improve health.

And in this, television will improve lives.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Lisa Curry's sweet words for son Jett after emotional episode

Image: channel 7

Jett Kenny has opened up about the death of his sister, Jaimi, in emotional scenes on SAS Australia.

Drawing praise for his “courage” from his mother Lisa Curry after the program aired, she told him: “Jaimi would be so proud of you.”

As part of a confronting challenge on Tuesday night’s episode, the recruits had to stand in front of their fellow contestants and talk about something they’re most ashamed of.

The 27-year-old ironman told the group he “never fully understood” Jaimi’s health battles with alcohol and an eating disorder, which claimed her life in September last year at only 33.

Jett said his sister had an ongoing battle with mental health issues for 15 years prior to her death, and at one stage, he attempted to have a heart-to-heart with her about it.

“For me it was kind of just, ‘Why are you doing this to yourself?’ And never fully understood it,” Jett said.

“There was one thing I said at her funeral. I’m not gonna say it because it was very personal but I remember saying it to her the night that she asked me….this question, and I gave her the honest truth. And I was hoping that was the harsh reality that she needed – hearing it from her younger brother.

“But she’s gone now. I kind of regret not being there for her more.”

Speaking in a piece-to-camera interview afterwards, Jett said his family, including famous Olympian parents Grant Kerry and Lisa Curry, did everything they could to support Jaimi through her struggles.

“We did everything we could as a family and for Jaimi to try bring her out of it but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. She got told she wasn’t gonna make it to 30. She got to 33,” he said.

“To me, it was like, you have the willpower to change your life and turn things around. But that’s me. I can’t speak for someone who’s going through mental health issues because I’ve never been there.”

“Everyone has to do the best they can for the people they love, but when you can’t it makes you question yourself. Like, ‘Was I a good enough brother?’” Jett added.

As he sat back down, he was comforted by his fellow recruits where he began to shed a tear. “It’s my older sister. Of course I’m going to miss her.”

Jett was interrogated one-on-one toward the end of the episode, where he recalled his final goodbye with Jaimi.

“I remember with my sister passing in September we were all sitting around the hospital bed with her, saying our last goodbyes. And I just remember seeing them (his parents) sitting there, holding her hand, just being, like, ‘What more could we have done?’.

“Mum said it perfectly, she was fighting a demon in her head. Visit the Game of Thrones shoot locations and relive your favourite episodes

After almost a decade of captivating audiences, Game of Thrones has finally come to an end for TV viewers. But if you still want your GoT fix, visiting one of the show’s filming locations may be the next best thing.

Bursting onto the small screen in 2011, Game of Thrones was quick to garner critical acclaim and be catapulted into cult-like TV status. As well as launching its actors into the public eye, Game of Thrones also helped propel its filming locations into the travel hotspot stratosphere. With shot locations as diverse as Croatia, Iceland, Spain, Malta, Morocco, Northern Ireland and Scotland, travellers have the opportunity to enter the world of fire and ice as envisioned by George R.R. Martin. With the show’s final season now ended, you can begin your own pilgrimage to one (or all) of these majestic destinations and set out on your own quest for the Iron Throne.

Croatia

King’s Landing’s real-world location can be found within the mediaeval walls of Dubrovnik, a coastal city in the south of Croatia. The city’s 16th-century Old Town is used for all King’s Landing exterior shots and is encircled by a three-kilometre ring of defensive limestone walls. Croatia has been used as the King’s Landing filming location since the second season and provides the setting for some of the show’s biggest plot points.

Lovrijenac Fortress is the backdrop for The Red Keep, the palace of King’s Landing occupied by the Lannisters. This limestone fortress is located just outside the western wall of Dubrovnik and stands 37 metres above sea level. The fort overshadows the two entrances to the city, by sea and by land, and sets the scene for the spectacular Battle of Blackwater Bay. The inner streets of Old Town have also played a part in bringing some major scenes from the books to life.
Jesuit Staircase

Head to the famous Jesuit Staircase to see where Cersei took her ‘walk of shame’ along St Dominic Street. This same street is also used in many of the series’ market scenes and was the spot where the gold cloaks killed one of Robert Baratheon’s biological children.
Pile Bay, Bokar Fortress and Trsteno Arboretum

Be sure to visit Pile Bay on your trip to Dubrovnik. Pile Bay most notably hosts the disturbing scene of the slaying of Robert Baratheon’s bastards from season two. Moving outwards from Pile sits the Bokar Fortress. The Bokar Fortress is one of the most recognisable structures in both Dubrovnik and Game of Thrones, in which this beautiful mediaeval construction features heavily in seasons two and three. The fortress hosts the scene where Varys discusses Tyrion’s work as the Hand of the King, as well as the deliberation of key battle strategies in the defeat of Stanis Baratheon’s army.

Moving out of the city of Dubrovnik, be sure to visit Trsteno Arboretum. This luscious garden which is positioned only 20 minutes’ drive outside of the city was built in the late 15th century, offering visitors panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. The majority of the palace garden scenes that take place in the show are filmed in Trsteno Arboretum.

Diocletian’s Palace and Fortress of Klis

Another filming location worth noting is Diocletian’s Palace in the Croatian seaside city of Split. The palace was constructed in the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. This UNESCO World Heritage Site received modern fame for being the setting for where Daenerys trained her dragons and where the ‘kill the masters’ scene in season four took place. While in the region be sure to visit the grand mediaeval Fortress of Klis which is only a 30-minute drive north of Split. This dominant structure features heavily in season four and is the location in which Daenerys overthrows the Meereen, the greatest of the three great city-states of Slaver's Bay. The Fortress of Klis was built in the 3rd century into and on top of an isolated body of rock. The fortress is completely inaccessible from three sides and offers visitors panoramic views of Split and the Adriatic Sea.

Iceland

A trip to Iceland on a Game of Thrones filming expedition wouldn’t be complete without visiting Iceland’s most famous waterfall, Skogafoss. This breathtaking cascade of water is a national icon, a representation of just how picturesque and powerful the Icelandic landscape can be. As dramatic as the series, Skogafoss spews an enormous amount of water into the depths below. The waterfall features in the first episode of season eight where Daenerys and Jon Snow ride the dragons and perch next to a series of ice-covered waterfalls.

What other location in the world could play the part of The Wall as perfectly as Iceland? Large glaciers in Snæfellsjökull, Svinafellsjökull and the hills of Höfðabrekkuheiði have been used to depict the Fist of the First Men and the Frostfang Mountains. Visit Dimmuborgir, a lava field with interestingly shaped rocks and great significance in Icelandic folklore and find yourself in the spot where Jon Snow and the Wildlings set up camp. Thingvellir National Park was also used for many of the exterior scenes beyond The Wall, and, during the warmer months, for Arya and The Hound’s travels in season four.

On your trip north of The Wall be sure to visit Hengilssvæðið to truly experience the rugged and confronting terrain that Iceland provided in the making of the series. Located a 30-minute drive from the capital (Reykjavik), the Hengill area was the filming location for the face-off between Brienne of Tarr and the Hound in season four, episode 10.

Moving further east of Reykjavik, the Þjórsárdalur Valley is a must see on every Game of Thrones diehard wishlist. It is here where the ransacking and destruction of Olly’s village in season four-episode three takes place. Olly is left as the lone survivor, leaving everyone and everything in his village dead and destroyed behind.

This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. 5 funniest episodes of Big Bang Theory so far

It seems only yesterday that The Big Bang Theory was bursting onto our screens and quickly become a worldwide hit. In reality, it’s been over 10 years since we first met Sheldon, Penny, and Leonard, and now we can’t imagine life without them. To show our love for the Big Bang crew, here are six of our favourite episodes so far.

1. The Staircase Implementation

In this season three classic, we flash back to when Sheldon and Leonard became roommates. We get the introduction of the Roommate Agreement, a hilarious screening test from Sheldon to decide if Sheldon will make a suitable roommate, and we finally find out why the elevator has been out of order for years.

2. The Barbarian Sublimation

We love it when Penny accidentally geeks out, and this gem from season two is a delight. With the world seemingly against her, Penny finds solace in the world of online gaming, and quickly becomes obsessed with Age of Conan – a fantasy game she becomes so wrapped up in, she stays glued to the desk for days.

3. The Flaming Spitoon Acquisition

Finally, at the halfway point of season five, Sheldon’s relationship with Amy (who, at this point, is a girl and a friend, but not a girlfriend) reaches a turning point when she catches the eye of Stuart, the owner of the comic book store. Sheldon underestimates Amy’s intentions as well as his own feelings for her, and the hilarious result is watching his jealousy play out during Amy and Stuart’s date.

4. The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis

In this early classic, Penny shows her understanding of Sheldon by gifting him a serviette used and autographed by Leonard Nimoy himself. The 10 best and worst TV finale episodes

While the memory of that awful How I Met Your Mother ending is probably still burning in your mind, one dedicated TV viewer has established an official list of the best and worst TV finales ever.

Imgur user MailPostman collected data from the web database IMDB to work out the average episode rating of a number of popular TV shows and compare them to the rating of their finales.

While not exhaustive, the list includes a number of surprising finds: the largely disappointing Glee had the best-rated finale compared to its overall episode rating, while Dexter, a drama starring Michael C Hall as a Miami serial killer, suffered the biggest ratings drop. It fell from an average episode score of just under eight, to just under five.

Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under and the US version of The Office topped the list for best-rated finale episodes, while the worst-rated overall ending was Two and a Half Men.

The 10 best-rated TV finales

Breaking Bad

Six Feet Under

The Office (U.S.)

Spartacus: War of the Damned

Parks and Recreation

Scrubs (Season Eight)

Friends

Newhart

Avatar: The Last Airbender

The Office (UK)

The 10 worst-rated TV finales

Two and a Half Men

Dexter

Dragon Ball Z

Star Trek: Enterprise

How I Met Your Mother

Baywatch

The L Word

Scrubs (Season Nine)

Misfits

The Sopranos

The 10 most disappointing TV finales

Dexter

Dragon Ball Z

True Blood

How I Met Your Mother

Two and a Half Men

The Sopranos

Star Trek: Enterprise

Scrubs (Season Nine)

Misfits

Futurama

The 10 most improved TV finales

Glee

Charmed

Newhart

Sex and the City

Revolution

Smallville

The OC

Desperate Housewives

ER

Angel

Tell us in the comments below, what’s the best or worst TV series finale you’ve ever seen?

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

2016 is the year of TV reboots and remakes

10 best TV shows from the 60s

10 shocking facts you didn’t know about your favourite TV shows
