Queensland's first TV star dies aged 90

Queensland's first television star, Hugh Cornish, has died at a retirement village in Hamilton, Brisbane aged 90.

A major figure in television, the iconic presenter made history as the first person to ever greet Channel 9 audiences in Queensland when television went live on August 16, 1959.

"I said something like, 'Hello Brisbane, welcome to television' and really, that was it," Cornish recalled in a 1990s interview.

His son Tim, confirmed the news of his passing on social media.

"Last night we lost one of the remaining burning stars. He was the greatest gentleman you could ever hope to meet," he shared.

Cornish began his media career as a radio presenter at 4IP in Ipswich in 1934.

Following his first TV appearance, Cornish eventually became the general manager of Channel 9 Queensland, and was the first person to run the same shows every night instead of once a week.

In the 1960s he hosted the variety show Brisbane Tonight before he went on to present the talent show Stairway to the Stars in the 1970s.

He later served as an executive at Nine and the Seven Network.

The TV star was remembered by his loved ones today after news of his death.

"Every time I think of Hugh Cornish, I think, I know we had the best days in the television industry because they were pioneering days," former television director Garry Gibson said.

"I just remember him as a kind loveable person who would help anybody.

"This man was interested in television and he wanted to make entertainment and we all chased that."

Managing director of Nine Queensland Kylie Blucher said his contributions to the media landscape were second to none.

"His face and voice became a trusted presence in countless homes," Blucher said in a statement.

"For decades, he brought warmth, professionalism, and dedication to Channel Nine's screen."

Veteran newsman Brett DeBritz added that many in this industry "owed their careers" to Cornish.

"Everybody who grew up in the sixties and seventies knew his face. He was the guy who brought local current affairs to Channel Nine, and he was also an entertainer.

"A lot of people owe their careers to him."

"He probably made a bigger impact on getting talent known and up and running in Brisbane than anybody else I know, ever," producer-director and friend John Stainton said.

Images: Nine

Does menopause hormone therapy increase or decrease your risk of dementia?

The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease, even after accounting for women living longer.

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease most commonly occur after the age of 65. However, changes in the brain begin decades before symptoms start. For women, this typically coincides with their transition to menopause.

Menopause results from the body decreasing production of two hormones made by the ovaries: oestrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes are associated with a wide range of symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats, difficulties sleeping, reduced libido, mood changes and brain fog.

Menopause hormonal therapy (also called hormone replacement therapy or HRT), including oestrogen alone or oestrogen combined with a progesterone, has been prescribed to help with menopausal symptoms for decades.

But how does menopause hormone therapy affect the risk of dementia? And why do some studies say the therapy increases the risk, while others say it reduces it?

Hormones and the brain

A large body of pre-clinical (animal based) research shows oestrogen helps protect the brain. It reduces any damage to nerve cells and supports overall brain health.

Receptors that respond to oestrogen are in areas of the brain related to reproductive functions. But they’re also in areas of the brain important for learning, memory and higher-order cognitive abilities such as planning, organisation and decision making.

The loss of the “neuroprotective” effects of oestrogen after menopause is thought to contribute to more cases of Alzheimer’s disease in women than men.

Clinical studies have also shown women who have a medical or surgical menopause before the age of natural menopause have a higher lifelong risk of dementia and cognitive impairment.

This risk appears to be reduced in women who take oestrogen therapy after their surgery.

This has led researchers to hypothesise that adding oestrogen back – via menopause hormone therapy – might protect and maintain women’s cognitive health.

However, the research findings have not been consistent.

Could menopause hormone therapy impact dementia risk?

Concern about dementia risk and menopause hormone therapy have been partially driven by the unexpected findings from a landmark study conducted more than two decades ago.

The findings showed hormone therapy use in post-menopausal women, 65 years and older, was associated with an increased risk for dementia.

However, these studies have some key limitations:

1) most of the women were aged over 65 and more than ten years post-menopause

2) the type of oestrogen and progestogen (a synthetic form of progesterone) used may have less benefit on brain health.

The most recently published systematic review and meta-analysis of scientific data linking hormone therapy to the risk of Alzheimer’s disease included findings from 51 different reports that were published up to 2023.

The results showed if hormone therapy was initiated in midlife, or more generally within ten  years of the final menstrual period, there was a decreased risk of later-life Alzheimer’s disease compared to women not using any hormone therapy.

The greatest reduction in risk was associated with oestrogen-only hormone therapy.

In contrast, when considering using hormone therapy in late-life, or more than ten  years after menopause, oestrogen-only therapy had a neutral effects on Alzheimer’s disease risk.

However, oestrogen-progestogen therapy was associated with a risk increase.

Only one clinical trial has been published since this meta-analysis. This study examined the long-term effects of menopause hormone therapy use initiated in early menopause.

Women were on average aged 52.8 years and 1.5 years post-menopause when they entered this trial. They were randomly assigned to an oestrogen (with or without progestogen) or placebo for four years.

Researchers followed 275 women up ten years later. They found no cognitive effects (no harm nor any benefit) based on whether women were exposed to 48 months of hormone therapy or a placebo.

What affects your risk?

It appears the effects of menopause hormone therapy on dementia risk are influenced by several factors. These include when someone starts taking it, how long they take it for, the type of hormones used, and the person’s genetic and health background.

1. When therapy starts: the critical window hypothesis

One key factor in determining the effect of menopause hormone therapy on cognitive function and the risk of dementia appears to be when therapy starts relative to menopause. This is called the “critical window hypothesis”.

According to this hypothesis, oestrogen may help protect neurons in the brain only if started early in the menopause transition, particularly within a few years of menopause, when the brain may still be more responsive to hormones.

2. Type of menopause hormone therapy and the role of progesterone

The type of hormones included in hormone therapy can vary widely in their molecular structure as well as their physiological actions.

Different types of oestrogens (such as estradiol or conjugated oestrogen) and the inclusion of a progestogen (needed for women who have not undergone a hysterectomy) may have different impacts on brain health and dementia risk.

Some studies suggest adding a progestogen to oestrogen therapy could counteract some of the cognitive benefits of oestrogen alone, possibly by blocking oestrogen receptors in the brain.

3. The role of vasomotor symptoms

Vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats, are the hallmark of menopause. Experiencing more vasomotor symptoms has been linked to poorer memory as well as an increase in biological markers associated with dementia risk.

Therefore, one possible pathway by which menopause hormone therapy may moderate Alzheimer’s disease risk is via their effects on reducing vasomotor symptoms.

4. An person’s genetic and health background

The greatest genetic risk factor for older-onset Alzheimer’s disease is carrying one or more copies of a specific version of the APOE gene, called APOE e4.

There is an emerging hypothesis that women who have this genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease may show the greatest benefit from using hormone therapy.

What does this mean for you?

The clinical and scientific community are still debating whether menopause hormone therapy may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease risk.

Overall, the decision to use hormone therapy should be individualised, taking into account your age and timing of menopause, health status and specific menopause symptoms.

We need more research before we can make clear decisions about the role of hormone therapy and dementia risk, but based on the current evidence, hormone therapy may be beneficial if started early in the menopause transition, particularly for women at genetic risk of Alzheimer’s disease.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Edwina Bartholomew's emotional health update

Edwina Bartholomew has opened up about the life-changing cancer diagnosis she received earlier this year in an interview with Stellar.

The Sunrise star, who was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in July, appeared on the Something To Talk About podcast and opened up about her health battle.

Edwina said she feels extremely lucky because they caught the cancer early as she reassured her fans that she is doing "really well", explaining that she takes her medication twice daily and will have to continue to do so for the next few years.

"My white blood cell count is almost back to normal, and there's another indicator that's looking really good as well," she shared.

"Perspective and mindset have been a big part of the process from the get-go. People can live with this their entire life and because I caught it so early, I could be rid of it in a few years."

She admitted the diagnosis prompted her to start taking care of her health and where her priorities should be, after announcing that she would cut down on her work on Sunrise in September.

“The 24/7 go, go, go approach I had to life for the past 40 years had to shift. This has definitely been a huge takeaway for me that life can’t continue like that. I’ve had to say to work, ‘I can’t now go back to work five days a week at 3am in the morning. It’s not something that I can do,’” she said.

“To their credit, Channel Seven has been phenomenal about that. Understanding that for my family, for me and my health, that’s not something I can do right now.

“Having to set really clear parameters around that isn’t something I’ve ever done before. It’s like I finally grew some balls after 20 years of working where I just said, ‘Right, these are the non-negotiables in my life and I will not compromise on my family, myself, my marriage, my life and my health’. And that’s it. And wow, that’s been powerful.”

She also opened up about the moment she broke the news to her parents, who she told in a “really emotional” conversation.

“Watching Dad find out was probably harder than watching Mum, because I think dads are often quite stoic, aren’t they?" she said in the interview.

"I was able to explain to Mum and Dad straight up the nuts and bolts and the practicalities of it, what would happen and the treatment – and that I had to have a biopsy to confirm it,” she continued.

“And they’re fairly pragmatic people. It was a really emotional discussion but also they could see that it wasn’t the end of the world and I was going to be OK.”

Images: Stellar

How to keep your physical and mental health on track during the holidays

Scott Lear, Simon Fraser University

With the festive season upon us, many people will be gathering with family and friends, whether it’s a workplace party, a friend’s get-together or a quiet night at home watching Christmas movies. While enjoyable, these events can disrupt your healthy lifestyle habits.

A recent survey reported nearly 45 per cent of people take a break from exercise during the holidays, more than half say they feel more tired and have less time for themselves, and about one-third report drinking more.

My research looks at the benefits of a healthy lifestyle on physical and mental health. And many of these same healthy behaviours can help you navigate the holidays.

Eating right

Cakes, chocolates, spiced ham, turkey stuffing, mulled wine and other delights abound during this time of year. Most of these foods are high in fat, sugar and calories. So it’s no surprise the holidays are associated with a greater consumption of food. And one survey even pegged people eating close to 6,000 calories on Christmas Day. That’s two to three times the daily caloric recommendation for most people.

With this amount of eating, there are many claims the holidays result in weight gain. While there is an enduring rumour that average holiday weight gain is five to 10 pounds (2.25 to 4.5 kilograms), in reality it may be much less. A study published in 2000 reported it to be only around one pound, or about half a kilogram. However, as this was an average amount, there were still some people in the study who gained five or more pounds.

While indulging on one or two occasions isn’t going to derail your diet, if you have a holiday circuit of events you do, you may want to develop a strategy on how to manage your diet. First ask yourself if you need (or want) to go to all of them.

For the events you do go to, pick one or two occasions at which you’ll indulge. These might have the best food, or your closest family and friends are present. For the others, try staying on the healthier side of things.

Before you go, make sure you eat well during the day leading up to your event so you’re not going to the event hungry. Also, make sure you get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep can make you more likely to reach for high-energy foods and eat more.

Try to enlist a health buddy, whether a friend or even the host, to keep you on track. And be mindful of alcohol intake, which can impair your self-discipline.

Staying active

When it comes to exercise, most of us are creatures of habit. This is a good thing, because having a routine is the best way to maintain regular exercise. But the holidays are anything but routine. Gyms, pools and community centres may have shortened hours or be closed. Your trainer or aerobics instructor may have taken time off.

Now, missing a few exercise sessions isn’t going to affect your fitness and long-term health, but it can affect your mood. Exercise is known to increase energy levels, improve mood and reduce stress. All of which can be helpful during the frenetic holidays. And missing an exercise session can be like not having your morning coffee.

But the holidays also present numerous opportunities to get in a lot of activity — from shopping to Christmas markets to walking around your neighbourhood looking at the decorations.

You can also get into the holiday spirit by singing Christmas carols (or any other song). Singing can reduce anxiety, potentially increase your lung capacity and increase the number of infection-fighting molecules in your blood. And singing with others is known to build social bonds and release oxytocin, which can improve one’s mood.

While the quality of your singing doesn’t matter for most of these benefits, the more you do sing, the more you’ll likely benefit.

Managing stress

Nearly 90 per cent of adults in the United States associate the holiday season with some form of stress. While the holidays are meant to be a period of joy, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed by the shopping, hosting events, expectations of others and the added financial costs.

This may be one of the reasons why the number of heart attacks and cardiac-related deaths increase during the holiday period. In addition, it’s believed people delay seeking treatment during the holidays, given that emergency department visits spike after they’re over.

Stress occurs when people feel they don’t have control over what’s going on. Setting up a holiday plan can help. Your plan could include a spending budget, which events you’ll attend and which you’ll say no to. If you’re hosting a dinner, plan the menu ahead of time, enlist help from others or even get take-out.

Other strategies for managing, and preventing, stress include getting regular exercise, ensuring you get enough sleep, avoiding unrealistic expectations and setting aside some quiet time to do something just for yourself.

While we all want things to be perfect, even the best plans may go astray. If that does happen, that’s okay and go easy on yourself. If you do find the holidays challenging, make sure you speak up to the people around you for their support.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Donald Bradman's baggy green sells for eye-watering price

Sir Donald Bradman's baggy green that he wore in his final Australian Test series has fetched nearly half a million at auction.

The cap was worn by Bradman during the 1947-48 series, when the Indian team played on Australia soil for the first time in history.

The baggy green fetched a whopping $390,000, with the final price totalling $479,700 including auction costs.

It attracted significant interest from potential buyers from both Australia and overseas, with the winning buyer coming out on top after a 10 minute flurry at Bonhams Auction House in Sydney on Tuesday evening.

The auction house described the cap as "sun faded and worn", with "some insect damage" and "some loss to edge of peak".

The cap was also advertised as “the only known Baggy Green” to have been worn by Bradman during the series, where he cored 715 runs in six innings at an average of 178.75, with three centuries and a double-hundred.

Bradman had gifted it to India's team manager at the time, who then gave it to the team's wicket keeper.

While it is currently not known who placed the winning bid, the cap itself has particular significance to Indian fans, as the series took place just months after the country gained independence.

For Aussie fans, the cap was worn during Bradman's final game on Australian soil, with the cricket legend embarking on a farewell tour of England afterwards.

This is not the first cap of Bradman's to go under the hammer, with the cap he wore during his 1928 Test debut fetching over $450,000 plus fees in 2020.

The late Shane Warne's baggy green currently holds the record for sale at auction, after selling for $1m when auctioned off in 2020.

Image: Design Pics Inc/ Shutterstock Editorial

Eight-year-old cancer survivor pushed down stairs at NFL game

Mia DeCamilla, an eight-year-old 49ers fan and cancer survivor was beyond excited to attend her first ever NFL game on Sunday.

DeCamilla inherited her love for the team from her father, saying: “Me and my dad, [when I’m] in the hospital, we’ll watch football together, and then when I come home sometimes for breaks, I will sit down and just relax and watch football all day. That’s what I like and how I made my team.”

The young girl - who battled and beat liver cancer twice - attended the event at the Highmark Stadium in New York Decked in 49ers red and a hand-drawn sign that read “I beat cancer! My first NFL game!”

What should've been a night to remember turned into a nightmare situation when DeCamilla was shoved out of her seat and down the stairs by an allegedly drunk Bills fan, following the team's win.

Her father, Mike DeCamilla told local news outlet WIVB that he saw the fan making his approach and heard him saying “‘I’m going to push through all these Niner fans'."

“He actually bumped me and my son a little bit and then got past me and pushed her. [She] almost slid off the stairs…

“He had to be six foot, and she is less than 100 pounds … I know that there’s competitiveness and whatnot, but there’s a point where it’s a family event.”

While DeCamilla was not physically hurt, her family said they decided to leave the game after the incident.

Her mother posted the incident on social media, and it has since gained traction, with many outraged over the adult fan's behaviour.

“Mia DeCamilla beat cancer and wanted to go to her first football game and it ended poorly," one fan wrote. "Great game to go to, but what horrible fans.”

“This cancer survivor got pushed down the stairs at a the bills game last night. I’m furious," another added.

Buffalo fans have since rallied to show the family support, with many of them donating to a GoFundMe that was organised to ease the burden of DeCamilla's treatments, with the fund reaching over $20,000.

Retired NFL cult hero Antonio Brown also commented on the situation, writing on X: “Is it true this little girl got thrown down the stairs at the Bills game? Someone get me in contact with Mia’s family please. I want to get her some gear.”

The team’s official supporters group, Bills Mafia, also rallied behind the family, writing on X: “So sorry to hear about Mia’s experience at the game yesterday.

“We all know one bad apple can ruin the bunch. Let’s show Mia that her experience yesterday is NOT what #BillsMafia is about.”

Despite everything that happened, DeCamilla didn't let the incident ruin her night.

“My favourite part was getting to see Brock Purdy,” the young 49ers fan told local radio station WHAM.

“He’s my favourite player and I have his jersey, too.”

Images: X/ Facebook

Queen Camilla shares major health update

Queen Camilla has shared details of her health diagnosis, after she was forced to pull out of several key engagements in the last few weeks.

During the Qatari royal visit in London, she revealed that her recent chest infection was actually a form of pneumonia.

The royal had to miss out on the outdoor events of the state visit as she is suffering from post-viral fatigue.

It is understood that her condition was viral, not bacterial, and while she doesn't have pneumonia anymore, doctors have encouraged her to rest and take more time to recover from the fatigue.

A royal source told The Sun, "Some days the Queen is on really good form. It's just one of those things. She has lost the coughing but the lingering side of it is bouts of extreme tiredness.

"There has to be a degree of flex in the Queen's diary at the moment."

The Queen contracted the infection after her and the King’s royal tour of Australia and Samoa in October, and as a result had to pull out of a series of high-profile engagements including Remembrance Day commemorations and the Royal Variety Performance.

She also had to cancel her appearance at the Palace’s reception for Olympic and Paralympic athletes, hosted by her husband, King Charles, and the annual opening of the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.

There was some concern late last month after the royal abruptly cancelled her planned appearance at the Royal Variety Performance, but she has since returned to her duties in a reduced capacity.

“Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritise sufficient rest,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

Image: Instagram/ The Royal Family

Veteran actor Ian Smith, beloved for his role as Harold Bishop on the long-running soap Neighbours, has filmed his final scenes, marking an emotional farewell to the show and his career.

At 85, Smith revealed his decision to step away from acting follows a terminal diagnosis of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

“It isn’t just my last day in Neighbours, it’s my last day of work,” Smith told 10 News First reporter Angela Bishop. “I found out a few months back that I have cancer, that I have a very aggressive, non-fixable cancer, and they expect me to die.”

Smith, who has undergone three rounds of treatment, including immunotherapy, expressed his determination to maintain his quality of life for as long as possible. “I’ve really put my hand up just to be a guinea pig, I think, plus the fact I don’t want to die. I want to stay alive with quality as long as I can,” he said. “I wake up every morning hoping there’s no pain because I know that’s the beginning of the bad part.”

Smith, a staple of Ramsay Street since 1987, was honoured by cast and crew on his final day of filming. Life-support of 16-year-old turned off after deadly snake bite

Beau Horan, 16, was in the backyard of his family home in Gladstone, Queensland on Monday afternoon when an eastern brown snake bit him on the leg.

The teenager wasn't aware that he had been bitten, and it was only when he collapsed that his family knew something was seriously wrong.

"By the time they found him collapsed, they called an ambulance and it was only then they realised he'd been bitten by a snake," family friend Shaun Connolly told Yahoo News.

Beau was rushed to a nearby hospital before he was medically airlifted to Brisbane where he was put on a life-support machine.

"I'm going off what his mum has told me... she's distraught as you can imagine," Connolly said. "We don't know too much what the circumstances were, but we think he wasn't aware he had been bitten," Shaun said.

Brown snakes are extremely venomous and responsible 41 per cent of snake bites in the country. While fatalities remain relatively low, with two deaths reported on average each year, the potency of their venom is incredibly strong, containing severe neurotoxins that result in progressive paralysis and heart failure.

The family has since had to make the heartbreaking decision of turning off Beau's life support machine, with his mum, Bek Eddy, and two sisters having to cover the unexpected medical and funeral costs.

Connolly has set up a GoFundMe page to help alleviate some of the pressure for the family during these uncertain times.

"It's just so sad," Shaun said.

Beau's family have described him as a "vibrant, compassionate [and] a loving young man" who had a "bright future ahead of him", and they have been left with "indescribable emptiness" following his death.

Image: GoFundMe

Teen photographer who shared special moment with Kate Middleton dies

Liz Hatton, a teenager who inspired Kate Middleton while pursuing her photography bucket list, has sadly passed away following her battle with a rare form of cancer.

The 17-year-old made headlines around the world when she was photographed embracing the Princess of Wales during a private meeting inside Windsor Castle in early October.

Liz's mother, Vicky Robayna, confirmed that the teenager had passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Robanya wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Liz had "remained determined to the last" and was still making plans for her future on Tuesday.

"We are so very proud of the kindness, empathy and courage she has shown in the last year," she wrote.

Liz began pursuing her photography bucket list in January after being diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumour, a rare and aggressive form of cancer and given between six months and three years to live by doctors.

She had dropped her formal studies in favour of following her dream of photography, and in October, she was invited by the Prince of Wales to take photos at an investiture.

The teenager also had a 30-minute personal chat with the royal couple, and her photos at Windsor Castle were later published by Kensington Palace.

In a personal message, the Prince and Princess of Wales described Liz as a "talented young photographer whose creativity and strength has inspired us both".

Liz's mother also wrote that not only was she "a phenomenal photographer, she was the best human and the most wonderful daughter and big sister we could ever have asked for".

"No-one could have fought harder for life than she did," she said.

"There is a gaping Liz-shaped hole in our lives that I am not sure how we will ever fill."

She also thanked everyone who helped the teenager fulfil her dreams in her final months, and for those who supported her work.

"You ensured Liz's last two months were her very best. She flew high until the end."

There is currently no standard treatment for the type of cancer Liz had, and no charity specialising in the disease in the UK.

Roboyna said that there were "two last favours to ask", and they included sharing one of Liz's photos in tribute and "help us with a mission to raise money to fund research into Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumour".

"Whether you can share, donate or raise funds – please be our village one more time," her mother said.

"Let's make this the last item on her bucket list and make sure other families don't face a similar fate."

Image: Kensington Palace/ X

Queen Mary launches new podcast on loneliness

Queen Mary has launched a new podcast focused on helping the most vulnerable in society.

The royal revealed the new venture on Instagram, through her official charity, the Mary Foundation.

The three-episode podcast, called the Lonely Youth series, will focus on those experiencing social isolation giving "insight into the nuances of loneliness by mixing professionalism and personal stories from young people".

The launch of the podcast follows a landmark survey across Denmark that was conducted in 2023 and found 73 per cent of 16-19-year-olds experience loneliness, regardless of whether they are alone or in the company of others.

It also found that 17 per cent of 16-24-year-olds feel very lonely.

The proportion of people in Denmark who experience loneliness has increased dramatically since the first national survey in 2013, which has inspired the Queen of Denmark to take action.

"These are heavy numbers that we must do something about," Queen Mary said.

"Podcasting is not something that we have much experience with yet at the Mary Foundation, but I hope that you will listen and welcome it," she added.

She also said that she was "proud" to be starting the podcast through her own foundation as she is an avid listener of podcasts herself, especially "when I have to go from one place to another".

"Some days I'm in the mood for entertainment, and other days I use it to gain knowledge and new input," she said.

The release date of the podcast has yet to be revealed and it is unclear whether the royal herself will speak across the episodes.

The podcast will be shared via the Mary Foundation website and other podcast platforms.

Queen Mary's foundation focuses on three core areas: bullying and wellbeing, loneliness and domestic violence, and was launched in 2007.

Images: The Danish Royal Household/Mary Foundation
