Police investigating after pet cavoodle held for ransom

A Sydney family are in shock after being forced to pay a ransom for the return of their beloved cavoodle, Benji, after he was snatched from the street and held for cash in an appalling case of dognapping.

Benji, a 10-year-old cavoodle, escaped from his home on Flinders Crescent in Hinchinbrook around 45 minutes west of hte CBD when a tradesman accidentally left a gate open. His desperate owner, Paulina Tran, searched tirelessly, knocking on doors in her neighbourhood and posting urgent appeals on social media.

“Our whole family is quite distraught,” Tran told 7NEWS. “My kids have been crying non-stop because we’ve had this dog for 10 years.”

A breakthrough came when a neighbour provided CCTV footage showing a man in a dark blue T-shirt and light blue shorts taking Benji off the street several hundred metres from Tran’s home. “He was very distraught. You can hear him on the footage crying,” Tran said of Benji.

Another neighbour, who was working from home, witnessed the incident and recalled the man whistling to Benji – a suspicious action since owners typically call their dogs by name. As the community rallied, more people came forward with information, eventually helping identify the man caught on CCTV.

Determined to bring Benji home, Tran and her husband confronted the man at his residence, only to be met with a ransom demand.

“We approached him and he refused to give us our dog back, saying that we needed to give him money,” Tran recounted. The situation then escalated when the man became aggressive and issued a disturbing threat: “I will skin your dog alive” if they refused to pay.

Fearful for Benji’s safety, Tran and her husband reluctantly agreed to hand over a small sum. The man took the money before retrieving Benji, who was returned with a rope tightly secured around his neck.

Despite their ordeal, Tran and her husband chose not to take further action after seeing children at the man’s home.

“It doesn’t take two bad people to make things right. Just because someone’s bad doesn’t mean you have to be bad to them,” Tran said.

In response to inquiries by 7NEWS, NSW Police have confirmed they will be investigating the incident.

Images: Facebook / 7NEWS

According to a statement released by Brett and his wife, Jessica, through the Yankees organisation, Miller had fallen ill during the trip along with several relatives. The family did not disclose further details about the nature of the illness or their location at the time.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,” the grieving parents shared. “Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile.”

Brett and Jessica, who also share an older son, Hunter, requested privacy as they mourn and seek healing. Why do I grieve my childhood home so much now we’ve sold it?

Grief can hit us in powerful and unanticipated ways. You might expect to grieve a person, a pet or even a former version of yourself – but many people are surprised by the depth of sad yearning they can feel after selling the childhood home.

In fact, it is normal to grieve a place. And this grief can be especially profound if it coincides with a parent dying or moving into residential aged care, leading to the sale of their house.

Grief is the response to the loss of anything to which we have an emotional connection. A growing body of research is looking at how grief can extend to “non-person” losses such as infertility, loss of religion and, yes, the loss of a former home.

Why would someone grieve a house?

The childhood home can be an important place for many of us. It literally housed our formative development, family bonds, and core memories. Hopefully, the childhood home is where we learned about safety, security and love.

It was likely surrounded by our neighbourhood, and close to important places such as school, playgrounds and friends’ houses. It is no wonder we grieve it when it’s gone.

It’s normal to grieve things we can’t see and touch but are real and valued. Just as a serious diagnosis might trigger grief for an imagined future for yourself, or an identity you once cherished, loss of a childhood home can hit us harder than we think.

When you sell a once-beloved home, you don’t just lose the physical space. You also lose all of what that space might represent, such as birthday celebrations, Christmas lunches, sleepovers with friends or many happy hours playing in the garden.

The childhood home often is a symbol of family connection and an anchor in the storm of life. Thinking of the home and all it represents can elicit nostalgia. In fact, the word “nostalgia” derives from the Greek words nostos (return) and algos (pain). The word is rooted in the pain we often feel being away from home.

And just as siblings are unique – each with different memories of and connections to their childhood home – their responses to its sale can differ markedly. It is normal if your sister or brother grieves the home in a different way to you – or maybe doesn’t even seem to grieve its loss at all.

A complicated grief

When a childhood home is sold because of the death of parents, the feelings of loss about the home are closely linked. The home being sold can be a type of secondary loss that sits in the periphery to the primary loss of parents.

Grieving the deaths might, at first, take precedence over the loss of the home.

It might only be later that the loss of the home and all it represents becomes apparent. Because the home provides a connection to the deceased person, the loss of the home might add another layer of grief about your parents. Perhaps you find that whenever you recall memories of mum or dad, they seem always to be at the house.

It’s also normal if you feel immense guilt about grieving the home. People might chastise themselves for worrying about “silly things” and not grieving “enough” about the person who died. Guilt about selling the home can also be common.

Not everyone has positive memories of their childhood home. Difficult family dynamics, maltreatment and abuse can complicate the emotional connection to childhood spaces and the grief response to their loss.

In such cases, the loss of the childhood home can elicit grief about the loss of the childhood that could have – and should have – been. The loss of a home that was the site of discord can be even more challenging than for people with more idyllic childhood experiences.

How can I cope with this loss?

Grief from the loss of a childhood home is real and valid. We should recognise this and be kind to ourselves and others experiencing it. We shouldn’t minimise the loss or make fun of it.

Usually, the loss is anticipated, and this allows you to take photos, furniture or mementos from the home or garden before you leave or sell.

Grief researchers call these “transitional objects”. They may help you maintain a connection to what is lost, while still grieving the place.

Social support while grieving is important. Some people share memories and photos of the home with their siblings, or derive comfort from driving by the home.

Just be prepared for the possibility it will likely change as the new owners adapt it to their needs. You might feel affronted, but hopefully can eventually accept the property now belongs to someone else.

Chat to your doctor if the loss is particularly difficult, and your grief doesn’t change and subside over time. They might be able to recommend a psychologist who specialises in grief.

If this article has raised issues for you, or if you’re concerned about someone you know, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Charlie Teo settles civil suit with family of deceased mother

Renowned neurosurgeon Charlie Teo has reached a settlement in a civil case brought by the family of a late Western Australian mother, Ebony Thurston, who underwent brain cancer surgery in 2018.

The case, heard in the NSW Supreme Court on Tuesday, was initiated by widower Aran Thurston and his three children, who sought damages for mental harm allegedly caused by Dr Teo’s advice and the outcome of the operation.

The plaintiffs argued that the risks associated with the surgery were "understated" and that Ms Thurston, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma on the brain stem in September 2018, never fully recovered before passing away in April 2019. Justice David Davies stated in court that the family claimed Dr Teo “owed each of the plaintiffs a duty to exercise reasonable care and skill” in his treatment, ensuring no psychiatric harm would be inflicted upon them.

Court documents alleged that Dr Teo discouraged Ms Thurston from pursuing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, providing "unrealistic" expectations regarding the benefits of surgery. The family asserted that the operation offered "no realistic potential benefit" to her health and ultimately led to a rapid deterioration in her condition, severely impacting her quality of life in her final months.

A fundraising page set up for Ms Thurston in 2018 stated that she underwent surgery in Sydney on October 24 of that year, with 95% of her tumour reportedly removed. However, her health continued to decline following the procedure.

The lawsuit, initiated in May 2024, was settled early in the legal process. Mr Thurston and his adult daughter agreed to the settlement, and the two younger children followed suit soon after. While the details of the settlements remain confidential, court documents show that family members had sought over $200,000 each in damages. Justice Davies approved the terms for the third and fourth plaintiffs, commending all parties for reaching an early resolution, which he said would allow the younger plaintiffs to "move on with their lives".

Dr Teo did not file a defence in the proceedings due to the swift settlements. Justice Davies clarified that this should not be seen as an admission of fault.

The high-profile surgeon has been a contentious figure in the medical community. In 2023, he was found guilty of unsatisfactory medical conduct by the Health Care Complaints Commission, which imposed conditions on his registration. He is now required to obtain written support from another specialist before performing certain procedures in Australia to "protect the health and safety of the public".

Since the restrictions on his practice in Australia, Dr Teo has continued to operate internationally, performing surgeries in China, Spain, Germany, India and Brazil, with some Australian patients traveling overseas for his treatment.

The settlement of this case marks another chapter in the ongoing scrutiny of Dr Teo’s medical practices and the impact of his surgical interventions.

Images: Instagram

An American renter was minding his own business at his rental home in Longview, Texas when he heard faint barking.

The man, who chose to remain anonymous, initially thought the barking was coming from outside, but soon realised that it was coming from below his floorboards.

Animal control officer Bobby Jumper was called to the scene and "was very shocked" to find a dog trapped at the bottom of an almost four-metre-deep well underneath the house.

The renter did not know there was a well under the house.

"I've been doing this for over seven years and that's the first time I've ran into something like this," the animal control officer told the Washington Post.

Jumper immediately called in back up from the local fire brigade, who built a makeshift sling to pull the stray dog out from safety.

"It took multiple people and a lot of different tools and equipment," he said.

The rescue took three hours and the team did consider ripping up the floorboards, but managed to find a way into the house without damaging it.

Rescuers said the stray pup, a Basset hound mix, had been trapped for days without food or water, but luckily came out unscathed.

The pup was taken to the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Centre and given the name Timmy, after the character known to fall down the well on the TV show Lassie.

Timmy has since been adopted by a loving family, with the adoption centre sharing the "rescue story of a lifetime" on Facebook.

"We witnessed a heartwarming tale of bravery and kindness that we just had to share," they wrote.

"Thanks to the quick thinking and heroic efforts of our local firefighters and animal control team, the dog was safely brought to the surface, shaken but unharmed!"

"Thank you to everyone who played a part in this miraculous rescue," the post continued.

"It's a true reminder of the incredible bond between humans and animals and how a community comes together in times of need!"

Images: Facebook

"Like a bolt out of the blue": Ray Hadley shares sad family news

Veteran broadcaster Ray Hadley has shared heartbreaking news about his three-year-old granddaughter, Lola, who has been diagnosed with leukaemia.

In a deeply emotional video posted to Facebook, the 70-year-old former 2GB radio host revealed that Lola was diagnosed on January 6, describing the moment as "like a bolt out of the blue".

Having spent years supporting charity events as an auctioneer, Hadley is no stranger to the hardships families endure when faced with childhood illness. Now, he and his family are experiencing those challenges firsthand.

“The journey we’ve endured over the last seven weeks has been... I guess, in many parts, agonising, and in other parts, enlightening – enlightening because of the courage and bravery shared by my granddaughter, Lola,” Hadley said in the video.

The toddler faces a tough two-year battle ahead, undergoing intense treatment.

“It’s a two-year battle... this little baby girl has had a lumbar puncture yesterday, that’ll be her seventh, she’s had a biopsy and bone marrow six times all under general anaesthetic,” he explained.

Hadley went on to describe the physical toll on his granddaughter, who is receiving four chemotherapy treatments a week. “She’s got tubes coming out of her left, right and centre... they attacked the leukaemia and the tests came back a week ago which weren’t as good as we hoped, so now they’ve really doubled down,” he said.

As a grandfather of seven, Hadley is fully devoted to supporting Lola through her fight. Reflecting on his retirement from radio late last year, he now believes the timing was meant to be: “I don’t think I believe in fate
but I think that something must have pre-empted my retirement so that I can do what I’m doing now in relation to my granddaughter and my family. Because if I was still working, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

Hadley announced his departure from 2GB on December 13, bringing a 43-year career to a close. With his daughter and son-in-law balancing the demands of caring for three children, Hadley has stepped in to help bring some joy to Lola’s days.

“I was with her yesterday
. and she’s got this thing where she likes to trick me,” he said, recounting their playful interactions. “Her favourite thing is (to say) ‘Poppy, you’ve got a spider in your hair’ and I sort of brush my hair, and I say, ‘Where is it? Where is it? Get the spider out’ and then she laughs.

“I don’t know how she handles it, she’s only three.”

For now, Hadley remains focused on what matters most – his family, and ensuring Lola has all the love and support she needs in the fight ahead.

Images: Facebook

Meghan Markle shares rare glimpse of Princess Lilibet

Meghan Markle has shared a rare glimpse of her daughter, Princess Lilibet, as she reintroduces her lifestyle brand under a new name – As Ever.

Following trademark issues with her original brand name, American Riviera Orchard, the Duchess of Sussex officially confirmed the rebranding in a social media post. Accompanying the announcement, a newly launched website prominently features an image of Meghan and Lilibet walking hand-in-hand through a park, seemingly captured by a drone.

This marks the third new image of three-year-old Lilibet shared with the public in just a few months. In December, Prince Harry and Meghan’s private Christmas card included a touching moment of the couple embracing Lilibet and her older brother, Prince Archie, 5. Then, in a tribute video following the passing of Meghan’s beloved rescue Beagle, Guy, fans caught another glimpse of Lilibet in a photo from Meghan’s private album, showing her with Guy in a park. The latest image appears to have been taken on the same day, as Meghan and her daughter are seen wearing similar outfits.

The heartwarming photo aligns with the essence of As Ever, which will offer a variety of products, including Meghan’s homemade jams. In a video accompanying the brand's launch, the Duchess excitedly shared her passion for the venture.

“I think we're all clear at this point that jam is my jam, but there are so many more products that I just love and use in my home, and now it’s time to share them with you,” she said. “I can't wait for you to see it.”

The name As Ever holds special meaning for Meghan’s followers, as it was originally her signature sign-off on her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig. The phrase later appeared on her podcast, Archetypes, and has now been embraced as the identity of her revived business, which coincides with her reactivated Instagram account.

“And if you’ve followed me since 2014 with The Tig, you know I’ve always loved cooking, crafting and gardening,” she explained. “This is what I do, and I haven’t been able to share it with you in the same way for the past few years, but now I can.”

As Ever is expected to reflect Meghan’s personal style and passions, much like her previous work on The Tig, with a focus on home and lifestyle products.

Images: As Ever / Instagram

Candid snaps of Scott Morrison unearthed in op shop

A TikTok user has stumbled upon a relic so rare, so historic, that it may just belong in Australia's National Archives – or at least at a particularly niche pub trivia night.

Charli Foo, presumably just looking for a cheap second-hand jacket or a quirky mug, was left stunned upon flicking through a random photo album at a Salvation Army store in Rockdale in Sydney's southwest. Nestled between the dusty board games and a collection of mismatched Tupperware was a scrapbook of memories featuring none other than former prime minister Scott Morrison.

The photo album, a true time capsule of the mid-'90s, documented a young, fresh-faced ScoMo in his tourism executive days, before he ascended to the highest office in the land (and then swiftly to the nearest Bunnings). The first few pages capture his trip to Port Douglas, where he attended a Tourism Task Force director’s meeting – presumably working hard to put Australia on the map while also perfecting his beachside relaxation techniques.

But the real gold lies in the candid moments. There he is, sprawled across a beach lounge at the Sheraton Mirage resort on the Gold Coast, the very image of a man who has had one too many networking beverages.

Later, he’s seen posing in front of a friend’s home in West London, his New Year's Eve 1996 exhaustion hilariously documented by an enthusiastic yet slightly judge-y caption: “Scott very, very, very TIRED after spending the day with Steve Girvan. I think too many Guinnesses.”

Now, in ScoMo’s defence, who among us hasn’t ended up “very, very, very TIRED” after a Guinness-fuelled evening with a mate named Steve? It’s the most Irish thing outside of accidentally calling everyone ‘mate’ in a thick Australian accent while attempting to order a Guinness in Dublin.

And speaking of Ireland, the adventure continues with photos of a sightseeing ScoMo strolling the streets of Dublin on January 8, 1997 – a day of great personal significance. Not for him, mind you, but for his wife Jen, who, as the captions inform us, was back in bed, battling the flu on her birthday. “Scott went sightseeing without Jen. She was sick, sick, sick
in bed.” The triple emphasis on ‘sick’ is either a sign of deep sympathy or someone trying very hard to justify a solo pint or three at the Temple Bar.

Naturally, social media exploded. Comments ranged from sheer disbelief to excitement at the historical significance of the find. One user suggested the album should be donated to a “museum or university”, arguing that “future historians would froth over having this kind of source material”.

And they’re probably right. Imagine, in the year 2125, a PhD student writing their thesis on ‘The Leisure and Leadership of Scott Morrison’ using a second-hand scrapbook as a primary source.

In the meantime, perhaps we should all be combing through our local op shops a little more carefully. Who knows? Next time, someone might find a VHS of Kevin Rudd’s karaoke nights or a collection of Tony Abbott’s forgotten speedo selfies.

History is all around us – sometimes, it’s just hiding between an old Abba vinyl and a set of novelty salt and pepper shakers.

Images: TikTok

Maggie Smith's son reveals her final moments

Dame Maggie Smith's son Toby Stephens has shared details of the last few weeks of his mother's life, and how he wasn't by her side when she passed away.

Toby and his brother Chris Larkin announced the death of their famous mother, revealing she died peacefully in hospital in September 2024 at the age of 89.

Stephens, who is also an actor, has now opened up about Maggie's last weeks, telling The Times that he was filming a movie in New Zealand when his mother died.

Despite her health troubles, Smith encouraged her son to take the role in the horror movie Marama, as he explained, “She was in hospital. She was supposed to be coming out, but the last two years of her life had been a decline: she would get worse, then she would get better, then she would get worse.”

“So I said, ‘Look I’ve got this film,’ and before I could even ask her, she said, ‘Go do it. God, you don’t want to hang round here, I’m fine.’”

However, when Stephens arrived in New Zealand, he was informed by hospital staff that his mother’s condition would not improve, as he said, "But it could take two months, two weeks, they didn’t know."

Soon afterwards he started filming the movie, his mother stopped being able to communicate.

“I’d spent hours and days sitting with her at home and in hospital over the course of two years, and there was nothing I had left unsaid,” Stephens said.

Maggie Smith died on September 27th, the day before Stephens finished filming.

His wife, actress Anna-Louise Plowman, and their three teenage children were all with her at the hospital the day before she died.

Maggie's other son Chris Larkin was at Smith’s bedside for her final moments, as Stephens said, “I was so sad not to be with him.”

“I found that very difficult, but she was no longer aware. And it allowed me some space to actually get my head round what had happened.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Stephens said he had been touched by the response to his mother’s death and the number of people who remembered her for her earlier roles.

He added, “The thing that really got me was: it’s very rare that you have actors that everyone likes."
