Iconic Aussie author caught up in bizarre book ban

Australian author Mem Fox, best known for her iconic Possum Magic book, has become the latest writer caught up in Florida’s wave of book bans.

Her 1988 release Guess What? is the target, facing the ban in schools throughout Duval County over allegations of “pornography” in its depictions of nudity.

The 2022 Florida law, part of the parental rights in conservative governor Ron DeSanti’s education bill, prohibits adults from distributing on school premises any content “of a person or portion of the human body which depicts nudity or sexual conduct, sexual excitement, sexual battery, bestiality, or sadomasochistic abuse and which is harmful to minors".

Punishment for not complying includes a third-degree felony, which can mean a prison sentence of up to five years for any individual caught.

The book asks children to guess the identity of character Daisy O’Grady with a series of questions - all yes or no - before finally revealing that she’s actually a witch.

Illustrations through Guess What? - created by illustrator Vivienne Goodman - see Daisy going about her day-to-day routine, including one key ‘problem’ activity: taking a bath.

It’s this scene that caused the trouble for Fox, with some dubbing it “pornographic”.

However, it isn’t the first time that Guess What? has come into question for its depictions - past reviews took issue with its images of dead fish in underwear as well.

Fox doesn’t seem too concerned about the ban though, with her agent even telling The Guardian that “Duval County is a county of 997,000 people in Florida. It is not important."

As Fox herself said on ABC Radio, “it's pitiful, isn't it? It's like, the Americans keep killing each other with guns and then they do things like this as well.

"You just feel sorry for them, you just think, 'people, you're so unsophisticated, you're so pitiful'.”

She went on to note that Americans had treated her well in the past, in her 100-plus visits to the country over the course of her career.

"They were so kind to me, they were so, so good, so generous, so warm-hearted, so affirming,” she said. “I just grieve for them.”

And when it came to the bath time scene, she was firm in her stance that it is “completely appropriate.

"She's washing herself, she's sort of sitting in this sink, you can't see any of her private parts at all.

"The whole book is about guessing who this person is, it turns out to be a witch in the end."

Images: Getty, Facebook

Guess the age: Disbelief over identical mum and daughter

A computer can guess more than 100,000,000,000 passwords per second. Still think yours is secure?

Passwords have been used for thousands of years as a means of identifying ourselves to others and in more recent times, to computers. It’s a simple concept – a shared piece of information, kept secret between individuals and used to “prove” identity.

Passwords in an IT context emerged in the 1960s with mainframe computers – large centrally operated computers with remote “terminals” for user access. They’re now used for everything from the PIN we enter at an ATM, to logging in to our computers and various websites.

But why do we need to “prove” our identity to the systems we access? And why are passwords so hard to get right?

What makes a good password?

Until relatively recently, a good password might have been a word or phrase of as little as six to eight characters. But we now have minimum length guidelines. This is because of “entropy”.

When talking about passwords, entropy is the measure of predictability. The maths behind this isn’t complex, but let’s examine it with an even simpler measure: the number of possible passwords, sometimes referred to as the “password space”.

If a one-character password only contains one lowercase letter, there are only 26 possible passwords (“a” to “z”). By including uppercase letters, we increase our password space to 52 potential passwords.

The password space continues to expand as the length is increased and other character types are added.

However, the problem with depending on password complexity is that computers are highly efficient at repeating tasks – including guessing passwords.

Last year, a record was set for a computer trying to generate every conceivable password. It achieved a rate faster than 100,000,000,000 guesses per second.

By leveraging this computing power, cyber criminals can hack into systems by bombarding them with as many password combinations as possible, in a process called brute force attacks.

And with cloud-based technology, guessing an eight-character password can be achieved in as little as 12 minutes and cost as little as US$25.

Also, because passwords are almost always used to give access to sensitive data or important systems, this motivates cyber criminals to actively seek them out. It also drives a lucrative online market selling passwords, some of which come with email addresses and/or usernames.

How are passwords stored on websites?

Website passwords are usually stored in a protected manner using a mathematical algorithm called hashing. A hashed password is unrecognisable and can’t be turned back into the password (an irreversible process).

When you try to login, the password you enter is hashed using the same process and compared to the version stored on the site. This process is repeated each time you login.

For example, the password “Pa$$w0rd” is given the value “02726d40f378e716981c4321d60ba3a325ed6a4c” when calculated using the SHA1 hashing algorithm. Try it yourself.

When faced with a file full of hashed passwords, a brute force attack can be used, trying every combination of characters for a range of password lengths. This has become such common practice that there are websites that list common passwords alongside their (calculated) hashed value. You can simply search for the hash to reveal the corresponding password.

The theft and selling of passwords lists is now so common, a dedicated website — haveibeenpwned.com — is available to help users check if their accounts are “in the wild”. This has grown to include more than 10 billion account details.

If your email address is listed on this site you should definitely change the detected password, as well as on any other sites for which you use the same credentials.

Is more complexity the solution?

You would think with so many password breaches occurring daily, we would have improved our password selection practices. Unfortunately, last year’s annual SplashData password survey has shown little change over five years.

As computing capabilities increase, the solution would appear to be increased complexity. But as humans, we are not skilled at (nor motivated to) remember highly complex passwords.

We’ve also passed the point where we use only two or three systems needing a password. It’s now common to access numerous sites, with each requiring a password (often of varying length and complexity). A recent survey suggests there are, on average, 70-80 passwords per person.

The good news is there are tools to address these issues. Most computers now support password storage in either the operating system or the web browser, usually with the option to share stored information across multiple devices.

Examples include Apple’s iCloud Keychain and the ability to save passwords in Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox (although less reliable).

Password managers such as KeePassXC can help users generate long, complex passwords and store them in a secure location for when they’re needed.

While this location still needs to be protected (usually with a long “master password”), using a password manager lets you have a unique, complex password for every website you visit.

This won’t prevent a password from being stolen from a vulnerable website. But if it is stolen, you won’t have to worry about changing the same password on all your other sites.

There are of course vulnerabilities in these solutions too, but perhaps that’s a story for another day.

Written by Paul Haskell-Dowland and Brianna O’Shea. She asks what she should do and where she should go, but he had enough of her antics and responded with, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” This is one of the most famous movie quotes of all time.

“Ogres are like onions."
Shrek (2001)
Shrek is one funny family movie that the whole gang will love. It features plenty of great one-liners, including, “Ogres are like onions.” The titular character further explains that ogres are like onions because both have layers.

“Put some Windex on it.”
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
We don’t think the characters in My Big Fat Greek Wedding know that there are plenty of things you should never clean with Windex. Still, the main character explains that her dad believes Windex cures everything from poison ivy to psoriasis.

“Why so serious?”
The Dark Knight (2008)
Hopefully, you guessed correctly because Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight is a hard performance to forget. It’s unsurprising that Rotten Tomatoes users voted this performance as the most memorable movie moment of the last 21 years.

“Are you not entertained?”
Gladiator (2000)
Although this movie is almost 20 years old, the pop-cultural references persist because it’s so ridiculously quotable. One of the most famous lines in the movie, directed by Ridley Scott is, “Are you not entertained?” If you don’t automatically lift your arms to mimic Russell Crowe’s character, then you probably got this question wrong.

“She doesn’t even go here.”
Mean Girls (2004)
Quotes from Mean Girls are still relevant and recognised even though the movie is from 2004. People also celebrate October 3rd as Mean Girls Day because of another infamous line from the movie.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Meryl Streep is in at least 68 different movies, and her role in The Devil Wears Prada is just one of her many fantastic and memorable characters. Anyone who works in media, magazines, or fashion is especially familiar with the movie and the scene where Streep says, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”

“Remember, the Force will be with you always.”
Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
This quote might have thrown you for a loop. That’s because it’s one of the movie quotes most people get wrong. Many people think the quote is, “May the Force be with you.” In fact, it’s often attributed to Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he never said it in the original Star Wars films. General Dodonna says this line to his Rebel troops, and later, Han Solo says it to Luke before the latter flies off to take down the Death Star. Obi-Wan does say the line in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, too.

“Here’s looking at you, kid.”
Casablanca (1942)
Casablanca is a classic movie that people lie about watching. That might be part of the reason why it’s common for people to botch some of the famous quotes from the classic film. One that people mostly get right is, “Here’s looking at you, kid.”

“You had me at ‘hello.’”
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Although the movie does focus heavily on sports, the famous quote is more romantic than athletic. The titular character played by Tom Cruise goes on a long-winded rant to try and win back his ex, played by Rene Zellweger, but she cuts him off with, “You had me at ‘hello.’” It might not necessarily be one of best romantic movies of all time, but it’s certainly worth watching.

“They call it Royale, with cheese.”
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Keeping track of the storylines in Pulp Fiction is part of the fun of watching the crime movie. The stars include John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, and Samuel L. Jackson, who says, “They call it Royale, with cheese.”

“Go ahead, make my day.”
Sudden Impact (1983)
Harry Callahan’s catchphrase, “Go ahead, make my day,” is something he says at the beginning and end of Sudden Impact. Callahan, played by Clint Eastwood, says this line to a robber to show that he could be easily provoked.

“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”
Dead Poets Society (1989)
If you’ve ever had an English teacher impact your life, you’re also a prime candidate for watching this 1989 movie. In the film, John Keating, played by Robin Williams, is an unorthodox teacher at an all-boys prep school. “Carpe diem,” he tells his students. “Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”

“I’ll have what she’s having.”
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Although Meg Ryan stars in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, it’s her performance in When Harry Met Sally that led to this famous quote. After Ryan’s character does some impressive acting of her own, an extra says, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
The Princess Bride (1987)
This film is based on a 1973 book by the same name, and although the book features one of the most romantic quotes, the movie quote that sticks out the most is about revenge. Inigo repeats this line more than once until he finally meets the man who killed his father.

“You can’t handle the truth!”
A Few Good Men (1992)
A Few Good Men has a few good movie quotes, but none are more memorable than, “You can’t handle the truth.” Jack Nicholson delivers this line during a heated courtroom interrogation.

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Jaws (1975)
Police Chief Brody yells, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” during an iconic scene in Jaws after seeing the gigantic shark he hopes to catch.

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze, rescues Baby after her father tells her to sit away from the dance stage, in the corner. Castle takes her hand, so the couple dances and have the time of their lives.

This article was originally published on Reader's Digest.

Many little girls love to dream about their future wedding day, and this Princess was no different.

The royal member has posted an adorable childhood picture of herself dressed up as a happy bride on Instagram.

The throwback photo caused a stir on social media, with fans of the stunning Princess swarming to comment uplifting messages to the account.

“Always destined to be the most beautiful Royal bride,” one user wrote.

“You were the most beautiful bride, especially with the emerald green tiara, and the dress fit beautifully!” another person said.

“The best insta [post] I've ever seen!” a comment read.

The Princess captioned the picture: “same same but different… #tbt”

Can you guess who this famous member of the family is? Scroll through the gallery above to see if you were correct.

It’s none other than Princess Eugenie!

The 28-year-old placed the throwback photo next to an image of her as a real-life bride. You’ll never guess what the next ‘big’ thing is in Australia!

Aussies love big things, according to data from Wotif. 40 per cent of us want to see more big things while we’re travelling. We’ve already got the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour, NSW and the Big Mango in Queensland – and there’s more than 150 to choose from across the nation.

However, this clearly isn’t enough for Aussies. With 90 per cent of Australians having visited a ‘big thing’ in their lifetime and 39 per cent of people going out of their way to see a big thing, it’s clear that Aussies are surprisingly sentimental about largely shaped foods, vegetables, fruits and animals.

It appears that the love has spread to the small town of Chinchilla. The town is only 300km west from Brisbane, Queensland and that’s the new home of the Big Melon.

The Big Melon is nothing to sneeze at. It’s almost 9 metres wide, 3 metres tall and weighs four tonnes. You can’t miss it.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Wotif (@wotifcom) on Nov 13, 2018 at 11:35am PST

The Big Melon is an idea put forward by Australians who participated in the Wotif campaign, where the company was searching for the ‘Next Big Thing’ to celebrate its 18th birthday.

Wotif managing director Daniel Finch was surprised by the amount of responses from participants, with final voting equating to 70 per cent of the Australian population.

“It goes to show the significance of big things in Australia and how sentimental Aussies are about them,” Finch explained.

“We know from our research that 40 per cent of Australians wish there were more big things to visit,” he says.

“We are excited to be able to put not just the big cities, but also regional areas on the map, to create excitement within these communities and a new reason to visit, helping to boost local economies,” Finch added.

“With the town now officially on the Aussie Big Things tourist map, we hope the Big Melon provides travellers with fruitful experiences for years to come, and we encourage all Aussies to consider a road trip to the region.”

Scroll through the gallery to see some of the other ‘big things' within Australia.

Are you going to see the Big Melon? Guess what's the biggest germ culprit at the airport?

You’re all packed for your overseas holiday and you’re doing a last-minute check before catching a taxi to the airport. Passport? Check. Travel insurance? Check. Hand sanitiser? Wait, what?

Just one more thing to remember

As if packing for a holiday is not stressful enough, now you have to make sure you don’t forget the hand sanitiser when you’re heading to the airport for your overseas trip.

Here’s why.

According to a new study published in the BMC Infectious Diseases journal by experts from the University of Nottingham in the UK and the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare, the biggest culprit for spreading germs in airports is the plastic tray where you place your personal items as you pass through security checks.

Yes, you read that right.

Your phone, wallet, keys, laptop, jacket and various other accoutrements have to share a snug, germ-filled receptacle.

The team came to this conclusion after swabbing different surfaces at Helsinki-Vantaa airport in Helsinki, Finland, during the winter of 2016.

The most common virus detected in the study was the rhinovirus, the cause of the common cold.

There were also traces of the Influenza A virus.

Other germ-filled culprits include shop payment terminals, staircase rails, passport checking counters, children’s play areas and even in the air.

One of the study’s authors advises that “people can help minimise contagion by hygienic hand washing and coughing into a handkerchief, tissue or sleeve at all times but especially in public places.”

Or you can keep a travel-size bottle of hand sanitiser handy and clean your hands every time you touch common surfaces.

Just remember, if you’re bringing a bottle in your carry-on luggage, make sure you adhere to the rules on liquids and gels – the maximum size for each container is 100ml.

Written by Siti Rohani. This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. Can you guess this TV judge from this 1980s throwback pic?

You may know him from a hit TV show on Channel Nine, but back in the '80s this star looked a lot different to the man he is now.

Wearing a white T-shirt, jeans, a black scarf and rocking a full head of dark curly hair, the TV personality is seen sitting on his bed in a photo that was uploaded to his Instagram on Tuesday.

“What Barbra Streisand had, I had to have. That’s how I rolled,” wrote the TV star in the caption.

He proceeded to make fun of himself with a string of hashtags that included “#curlyperm #unidays #proofs #badhairday #university #1980 #studentlife #eyebrows #warwickuniversity”.

Have you guessed who it is yet?

The mysterious man in the photo is none other than The Block judge and interior designer Neale Whitaker.

View this post on Instagram

What Barbra Streisand had, I had to have.
