Veteran Seven journalist faces fresh allegations of inappropriate behaviour

Veteran journalist Robert Ovadia is facing allegations from another 13 women of inappropriate conduct after claiming he was unlawfully sacked from Network Seven.

Ovadia was let go from Seven on June 21st after working with the network for 23 years, when he was fired with immediate effect after it was revealed he was part of an investigation by the ABC’s Four Corners program into the alleged toxic culture at the Seven Network.

After he was let go, the 7News Sydney journalist launched civil legal action against his former employer saying he was fired unlawfully.

On Thursday, Network Seven’s lawyer Vanja Bulut told the Federal Court that the Network terminated Ovadia’s employment because of a “number of images sent to a former colleague”, who was a graduate news producer.

Ms Bulut said the termination was also due to the “sending (an image) of a man’s genital to a colleague”.

The Network is defending the decision to “summarily terminate” Mr Ovadia without notice, with Ms Bulut noting further allegations had arisen supporting that decision.

“Subsequent to (Mr Ovadia’s) dismissal, 13 more females have come forward with complaints in regard to his conduct and they are subject to that investigation,” Ms Bulut told the court.

“He has been written to setting out the additional allegations that have come out subsequent to the dismissal, and to the extent that those allegations are reported in documents. Even if they (Seven) didn’t have a basis to primarily terminate the applicant’s employment at that time, the conduct that has come to light subsequently does provide a basis,” she said.

In a statement made after court, Mr Ovadia denied the claims against him, saying, “The claims are baseless and Seven has never provided evidence despite repeated requests.”

“Even today, no evidence to support any of this - just a dirty tactic to try to bully me away from defending myself.”

Aussie Olympic judge sent home after “inappropriate act”

Australian surfing judge Ben Lowe has been sent home from the Paris Games after an "inappropriate" photo with an athlete went viral.

Lowe posed for a photo with Aussie surfer Ethan Ewing and his coach Bede Durbidge on the beaches of Tahiti - the largest island in French Polynesia where the Olympic surfing competition is taking place - to celebrate Ewing making it to the quarter finals.

The photo of the men soon went viral with the caption, “Three Straddie (North Stradbroke Island) boys doing their stuff at the Olympics.”

Despite the photo seeming completely harmless, the International Surfing Association (ISA) took swift action against Lowe.

According to the ISA, Lowe, an experienced World Surf League judge, has been stood down in accordance with the ISA’s code of conduct and the International Olympic Committee’s code of ethics.

The ISA released a statement overnight saying it removed Lowe from the judging panel for the remainder of the competition to "protect the integrity and fairness of the ongoing competition".

"The ISA is aware of a photo circulating on social media in which one of the Olympic surfing judges from Australia is seen socially interacting with an Australian athlete and the team manager," the ISA said.

"It is inappropriate for a judge to be interacting in this manner with an athlete and their team."

The surfing federation said it had "communicated with all judges and teams to remind them of their responsibilities regarding appropriate behaviour".

Olympics coach withdraws amid inappropriate behaviour allegations

The coach of the Australian Gymnastics team has withdrawn due to allegations of inappropriate behaviour, just weeks before the Paris Olympics are set to begin.

Jeb Silsbury withdrew from the team on Thursday after allegations of inappropriate behaviour were raised by a former colleague with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).

The claims allege that Silsbury made remarks about his colleague's breasts and "slapped" her bottom, as first reported by the ABC.

Silsbury's withdrawal comes just one day before he was due to head to Paris to begin preparations for the Olympics, which kick off on July 26th.

According to AOC rules, all athletes, coaches and officials are required to reveal whether they have been involved in any integrity related issue before to their selection for a national team.

It is understood that the AOC was not aware of the allegations, which have not yet been fully investigated.

A spokesperson for the AOC confirmed with Wide World of Sports that Silsbury has been deselected as coach, saying in a statement, "The AOC understands Mr Silsbury has withdrawn as a coach from the Australian gymnastics team for Paris 2024. Consequently, he has been deselected."

"The AOC was not aware of any integrity matters in relation to Mr Silsbury's nomination for the Australian Olympic Team when considering his suitability for selection."

"The AOC is committed to the national integrity framework. Complaints can be directed to Sport Integrity Australia or through Gymnastic Australia's complaints handling mechanisms."

The allegations have prompted questions regarding the selection processes of Gymnastics Australia (GA) and Silsbury's eligibility.

As per GA's selection policy, coaches can be considered for national teams as long as they are not currently under sanction or being investigated for violating the sport's regulations.

"I still can't fathom it": Wendy Harmer names and shames inappropriate guest

Wendy Harmer has named and shamed the high-profile comedian who would regularly expose his genitals to her during an ongoing radio prank.

Recalling the X-rated moments in her new memoir Lies My Mirror Told Me, the 68-year-old broadcasting veteran revealed that her former 2Day FM co-host, comedian Jamie Dunn would consistently expose himself as a joke.

Harmer recalled how she never found the joke amusing nor sexual in nature, writing, "I suspect Jamie was a bit of a naturist."

"I still can't fathom why he would do it as a gag on radio," she said, later confirming that she saw Dunn's penis "more times" than she "cared to remember".

Harmer recalled the "joke" in detail, while her former co-host, Paul Holmes, also shared his experience in the memoir, saying he never understood the reasoning behind the bizarre prank.

Holmes wrote, "He'd drop his dacks, exposing his penis, raise his hands in the air and strike a pose."

When approached by the Sydney Morning Herald for comment, Dunn, who was best known for voicing and operating the children's puppet Agro, admitted to exposing himself "once or twice" as a "harmless joke".

In her memoir, Harmer went on to detail the early days of her career in the male-dominated media industry, and shared how she very quickly learned to stand up for herself.

“I was a kid, I soon developed a more assertive attitude ... Many men I have worked with have said I’m a bit scary, they’re usually the ones who got second billing,” Harmer told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Certainly, I would not like my daughter to have gone through some of the things I went through in the workplace.”

Mother-of-the-groom slammed for “wildly inappropriate” wedding dress

A woman has caused quite the commotion over her outfit choice for her son’s big day, with one member of the family even taking to social media to find out how others felt about it.

And while the story gained the most traction a year later, people had plenty to contribute to the conversation with it was shared to Reddit, with the majority of the opinion that the mother-of-the-groom had made a major wedding day faux pas.

The post opened with a picture of the dress, an off-white floor length floral gown, with the text “MOG dress at my sister’s wedding” across the bottom of the image.

“Surely they can’t be serious,” one user wrote after stumbling across the story on the internet forum, “absolutely not”.

“First two words out [of] my mouth too. Absolutely not,” another agreed.

When one announced that it looked just like a wedding dress to them, someone else chimed in to add that “she even did the photo of it hanging from the door that you often see in bridal ‘getting ready’ photos.”

“You have to live on Mars not to realise this is entirely inappropriate,” one said. “I would have been pissed.”

And as someone else put it, “I mean, if the theme is ‘everyone wear a wedding dress’ then she nailed it. If it’s literally any other wedding theme this is absolutely wildly inappropriate”.

A member of the family eventually stumbled across the post, and swooped in to assure everyone that it had not been a joke, and to inform them that the mother-in-law had ended up wearing the dress in question.

“I just stumbled across this subreddit and wanted to hear everyone’s opinion,” she said, “because my sister and I thought she was crazy for wearing it!”

“Yikes on bikes,” someone said in response, before asking the questions on everyone’s minds, “what is her relationship with her son like? What was your sister’s relationship with her like before the wedding? What is it like now? Please spill ALL the tea!”

And luckily for them, the woman was happy to oblige, sharing that the groom had been “the oldest of 5 and the last boy to get married.

“They’re a close family and they all get along with my sister, before and after the wedding! She’s a super sweet lady but it was just such an odd choice and came out of left field.”

Images: Reddit

Gimme five!” I can be, and am, as cool as the next — the next adult, that is,” he wrote in the Omaha World-Herald.

“I will not slap the upraised palm of a person who is not my peer, and a peer is someone over age 21, emancipated, employed and paying their own way.”

Rosemand also declared that high-fives were off the table for employers and employees, doctors and patients, and grandparents and grandchildren, as well as stating that the President of the United States shouldn’t high-five anyone.

The journalist went on to explain that high-fives are “not compatible with respect”, and that respecting adults “is important to a child’s character development”.

“Children should know their place. Adults should know their place. The more adults and children commingle as if they are equals, the more problematic become their relationships,” he concludes.

“Why should a child obey an adult who high-fives him? And make no mistake, the happiest kids are also the most obedient. The research says so, as does one’s common sense.”

While Rosemand claims there is research for the connection between obedience and happiness in kids, there have been multiple studies on the psychological effects of high-fives, including the benefits for children.

One study, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, found that high-fives and other forms of ambiguous praise (praise that is less explicit, such as a thumbs up) are effective motivators for children.

In fact, high-fives could be one of the best ways of praising children, with the study finding that children evaluated themselves and drawings they did more favourably than those who received verbal praise.

Since Rosemand’s article was published, it has been the subject of criticism on social media.

"My personal goal today was to respond to emails but now it's high-fiving every kid I see," one user said on Twitter.

"Imagine being so obsessed with where you stand in a social hierarchy relative to others in it that you think basic gestures of humanity ought to be withheld from your inferiors for the sake of decorum," another tweeted.

"He's wrong on this one, and this doctor high-fives patients. I still command respect. Maybe he's doing something incorrectly," a third suggested.

Image: Getty Images

Lisa Wilkinson calls out “inappropriate” experience

Lisa Wilkinson has been left embarrassed after the metal underwire in her bra and zip on her jeans prompted a public pat-down.

The Project host was travelling and went through the mandatory security check which showed the metal underwire and zip.

This prompted an “inappropriate” public pat-down which she has called out on Twitter and asked for it to be “fixed”.

“At Brisbane Airport & Adelaide Airport the scan showed up the underwire in my bra & zip on my jeans & I had to have a full pat-down in both areas,” she tweeted.

“Embarrassing, uncomfortable, inappropriate & should be fixed.”

Her tweet came just hours after ABC journalist Louise Milligan was forced to take off her suit jacket all while just wearing a camisole underneath.

These new full-body scan machines are a real issue @Milliganreports. Dad goes viral after warning other parents about ‘inappropriate’ dolls

An American dad has taken to TikTok to complain about the ‘inappropriate’ LOL Surprise Dolls his daughter asked him to buy for her. He starts the video by showing off dolls he considers wholesome - namely, Tiana and Anna, two Disney princesses. These are then contrasted with the ‘inappropriate’ LOL Surprise Dolls, rotating one as he exclaims, ‘This one’s dressed up like a hoochie!’

@official.patrick.johnson
I Can't Believe I Bought This For My Daughter #Fyp #protectthechildren #wth
♬ original sound - Official.Patrick.Johnson

Patrick Johnson, father and pastor, said in the video, "I don't know what we doing these days, my baby wants LOL dolls and I'm upset y'all, look at these dolls. What are we doing to our children, y'all?! We've got to be careful what we're giving to our girls! I don't want her thinking this is the way women dress!"

Two of the dolls he shows are wearing two-piece outfits with stockings underneath, and a third is wearing a one-piece leotard. “Wildly inappropriate”: Woman slams budget airline Jetstar for racially targeting her

A Melbourne woman has slammed budget airline Jetstar and claimed that she was a victim of “s***-shaming” while waiting to board a flight at Sydney Airport.

Serah Nathan, 33, was flying home with Tigerair and was waiting to board her flight when the “strange” altercation occurred at a Jetstar designated gate.

Nathan was visiting her partner with whom she has a long-distance relationship with and claims she was sitting on her partner’s lap when approached by staff.

“I sat on his knees and we just talked about mundane nothingness for a couple of minutes,” Ms Nathan told news.com.au, adding the pair weren’t going to see each other again until Christmas.

“A uniformed Jetstar representative … sidled up and instructed me to ‘sit on a separate seat because there are children watching’.

“My partner and I saw no children in the immediate vicinity and were bewildered at both this request and it’s relevance to how I was seated.”

The airline ground staff representative returned with a Team Leader who again told Nathan to sit next to her partner.

“I calmly asked her to clarify why I couldn’t converse with my partner while sitting on his knees,” Ms Nathan, a writer, said.

“She reiterated there were children around and added, ‘you’re disrespecting the parents here by straddling your boyfriend’.”

“I wasn’t treating a domestic airport terminal like a strip club.”

Nathan is outraged by the incident, saying that Jetstar was “in the mood to bully a woman of colour”.

“(The Jetstar employee) alleged my full length trackies, runners and crop top combo might get me refused on a flight,” Ms Nathan said.

“I noted the caucasian woman sitting opposite me wore a very short strapless dress but was left to her own devices.

“It seemed to me that Team Leader was in the mood to bully a woman of colour who looks a lot younger than my 33 years of age, and is therefore an easy target.”

Jetstar have denied any discriminatory behaviour was conducted by staff members.

“We don’t tolerate discrimination in any form and our teams dispute allegations they were acting in this way,” a Jetstar spokesperson said.

However, when Nathan went to let the Jetstar Customer Service team know about her experience, there were some “odd responses”.

“There were some very odd responses from their online complaints handling team, which only added salt to the wound,” she explained, questioning the online chat system whether her outfit was considered “inappropriate” to fly.

Nathan had provided an account of what happened as well as attaching a picture of her outfit that she wore to the airport.

The alleged response was shocking to Nathan.

“I have checked the photo and I think you are very beautiful, your boyfriend must be very lucky to have you,” the alleged response from Jetstar read.

“I can understand that you were not engaging in a sexual activity, but then again I believe that this kind of body language must be done in a private place,” the response continued.

A spokesperson from Jetstar said an investigation into the incident is continuing.

“We are speaking to our airport team to better understand what happened,” a Jetstar spokesperson said in a statement to news.com.au.

“We apologise to Serah for the manner in which her query was handled by our online customer service representative which fell well short of the standards we expect.”

Charlie Teo hits back at claims of inappropriate conduct

Prominent neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo has hit back at the Fairfax news report accusing him of sexually inappropriate behaviours.

In the article published on The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, several neurosurgeons and specialists accused Teo of inappropriate comments and conduct during operations.

Teo’s colleagues, who were unnamed over fears of public backlash, claimed that Teo is often “grossly inappropriate” in the operating theatre, making comments such as “Wouldn’t I like to get you naked!” and “It’s my dream that you would suck my dick while I'm doing this operation”.

Some of the colleagues also claimed Teo refuses to operate in public hospitals due to the low payments and often exaggerates patients’ symptoms to intimidate them into undergoing surgeries.

“I am incredibly surprised and tremendously disappointed by the article published today in The Sydney Morning Herald,” Teo said in a statement on his personal website.

“Particularly disturbing was the evident lack of legitimate research, the use of nameless sources, the staggering number of inaccuracies and ultimate failure to provide a fair and balanced story.

“It’s disappointing that the publisher has chosen to report inaccurately and in such a sensational and biased manner. I have asked my legal team to review the article.”

In May, Teo found himself at the centre of a growing controversy after urologist Henry Woo questioned the 61-year-old’s surgery services, citing the more than 110 GoFundMe campaigns to raise over $100,000 for operations involving Teo.

“Something is seriously wrong if a terminally ill girl with a brain tumour has to raise $120K to have surgery Dr Charlie Teo has offered to do for $60-80K,” Woo wrote on Twitter.

“If it was valid surgery, it could/should be performed in the public system under Medicare.”

Woo told Fairfax that “data needs to be collected and peer review undertaken” to “accurately assess the validity of Dr Teo’s surgical approach”.

Teo said he would perform operations “free of charge” in public hospitals, but he has not been invited yet.

However, one colleague in the report said, “The media is happy to perpetuate the crap that he says ‘nobody likes me and I have been shut out’ … All of that is such rubbish. He could come down here and operate at any time he wants to. He refuses to.”

Federal Minister for Women Marise Payne has slammed a Sydney radio host after he asked a question to New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian or whether she would have an abortion.

Sitting down with 2GB host, Ben Fordham, Berejiklian was grilled about the bill to decriminalise abortion that is before the state’s parliament.

The Premier has been heavily criticised as accusations have been made against her saying she tried to rush the bill through Parliament, with members of her own government furious as to how she handled the situation.

During the interview, Fordham asked Berejiklian whether she would ever consider having an abortion.

“I can’t speak for what circumstances I’d be faced with,” she said.

“I don’t want to make people feel guilty who have had to go down that path.

“I’m not someone who’d be comfortable going through that process, but that’s just me, I can’t speak for other women.”

Senator Payne was angered by the interview, saying it was inappropriate to ask such an invasive question.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate to ask anyone publicly, male or female, about sensitive health questions like that and it’s not OK,” she told the ABC’s Insider program on Sunday.

The exchange between Fordham and Berejiklian went as follows:

Fordham: Under no circumstances?

Berejiklian: I can't speak for, I can't speak…

Fordham: But within, Gladys, Gladys from Willoughby or wherever you live…

Berejiklian: But I can't, but heaven forbid, I've not been in a situation where I've had to contemplate that, and nor would I. But I can't make a vote according to me and my beliefs, I cast my vote because I know other people don't have the life experiences I've had, don't have my beliefs.

Fordham: You didn't want your faith or your personal beliefs to flow over into everyone else's views.

Berejiklian: That's right.

Fordham: But for the record, your own personal view. Not your parliamentary view, or your Premier view.

Berejiklian: My personal view is I'm a very conservative person who would not feel comfortable in having that process, but that is just me, and it's not fair for me … and Ben, you've been naughty in pushing me to say that, because I don't want anyone to feel guilty about decisions they've made, because I'm not in their shoes.

Senator Payne, who is currently the most senior woman in the federal Liberal Party due to also being Foreign Minister, said that the bill should be left up to New South Wales politicians to decide.

“But I do think it’s appropriate for that matter to be decriminalised in New South Wales, yes.”

“I feel uncomfortable”: Erin Molan’s plea to Darryl Brohman about inappropriate comments made on air

2GB co-host Darryl Brohman is in hot water after his comments to his former The Footy Show co-host Erin Molan on the weekend.

Molan was appearing on 2GB’s Continuous Call show on Saturday when Brohman pointed out that Molan had been “adjusting herself”.

“Can you wear a bra next time you come in?” Darryl said.

“She's been adjusting herself for 20 minutes. Can you do something about that?”

Molan dismissed the comments as they were live on air and explained that she has a child at home and doesn’t have a lot of time.

“I have a child, I don’t have time to get ready,” Molan snapped back, which led another male radio host to jump in saying that Molan “didn’t have to explain herself.”

Despite Molan and Brohman joking about it, it seems like Brohman couldn’t let the subject go.

Throughout the segment, Molan voiced her discomfort by saying “I feel uncomfortable”, to which Brohman replied: “Well, go and put on a bra and you’ll feel better!”

The segment ended with Brohman being told to put on a bra himself and the three hosts laughed together.

View this post on Instagram

Fancy seeing ye’all here... 🙌😘😘😍 @riddell009 @lucasthetics @therealbigmarn @nrlonnine @2gb873 @wwos

A post shared by Erin Molan (@erin_molan) on Mar 28, 2019 at 11:26pm PDT

However, the Studio 10 panelists aren’t pleased with the exchange. Narelda Jacobs, after listening to the audio said that it was “disgraceful”.

“Does Erin sit there and tell Darryl to stop adjusting his nuts?” she explained with annoyance.

“I think it is absolutely terrible because it means he is looking at her boobs. They are on radio as well, so now everyone has painted a picture in their minds.”

However, Joe Hildebrand disagreed.

“It seemed awkward, but it was one of those things where everyone is still having a good time,” he said.

Angela Bishop, entertainment reporter, agreed with Jacobs.

“It's a blokey environment and Erin has forged this great female presence within that show,” she said.

“[When I heard it] I just went, 'Really? Really?"

What do you think of Darryl Brohman's inappropriate comments to Erin Molan on live radio? Let us know in the comment section.

The inappropriate question a reporter asked NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has faced a never-ending barrage of questions about her personal life since her unexpected pregnancy and quick rise to the top.

An interview with the BBC was surprisingly no exception.

As reporter Victoria Derbyshire asked Ardern whether or not she had any plans to propose to her partner Clarke Gayford, the NZ Prime Minister was surprised and laughed loudly at the question.

“I would not ask, no.”

Derbyshire didn't seem satisfied with the answer given and pushed forward, asking if Ardern was a feminist.

“Oh absolutely, absolutely I am a feminist. But no, I want to put him through the pain and torture of having to agonise about that question himself, that’s letting him off the hook, absolutely not,” Ardern elaborated.

"I want to put [my partner] through the torture and pain of having to agonise about that question himself"

New Zealand @jacindaardern tells us she is a feminist, but she'd never be the one to pop the questionhttps://t.co/MCAoKLpCGK #VictoriaLIVE pic.twitter.com/rfbSp4NOmf
— Victoria Derbyshire (@VictoriaLIVE) 21 January 2019

Many New Zealanders have been outraged by the question, as Ardern is currently on a tour of the United Kingdom and Europe.

She’s the PM of New Zealand. Channel Seven's Jim Wilson cops backlash for asking athlete inappropriate question

A Channel Seven reporter is receiving backlash after asking wheelchair-bound Aussie athlete, Kurt Fearnley, about how he feels “walking” into the stadium before the opening ceremony.

Last night, reporter Jim Wilson spoke to legendary wheelchair racer Kurt Fearnley moments before the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony in the Gold Coast.

“How about walking... and coming into the stadium tonight?” Wilson asked Fearnley.

The gold-medallist revealed a noticeable grimace but politely responded after Wilson quickly rephrased his question.

Viewers were quick to respond on social media to Wilson’s awkward question.

“Sorry Jim, did you just say ‘walk in’ to Kurt, one of our greatest wheelchair bound athletes? Come on mate,” one person tweeted. Fearnley has a congenital disorder called sacral agenesis, which prevented the development of parts of his spine.

The athlete has won three gold medals at the Paralympic Games and has competed at two previous Commonwealth Games. In 2010, he won the gold medal for the 1500m T54 in Delhi.

This year, Fearnley will compete in the marathon event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Fearnley revealed to Players Voice that this Commonwealth Games could be the last time he represents Australia. “I’ll never say never and there’s a very, very slim chance I’ll have a crack at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 but it feels right to go out on home soil, having started my international career here 18 years ago,” he said.

7 classic songs with surprisingly inappropriate lyrics

If you’re like us, when you listen to music you aren’t focused too much on the lyrics – if you like a song, you like it, right? Well, the next time you’re listening to one of your favourites, pay close attention to the lyrics – you might be surprised to learn what the song’s really about.

With this in mind, a Reddit user asked the online community the following question: “What classic song is widely accepted, but upon closer look, completely inappropriate?”

As it turns out, there’s a lot of them. Here are some of the most surprising responses.

1. “Waltzing Matilda”by Banjo Paterson – “It’s about a man that commits suicide after he was accused of stealing and eating a goat. He drowns himself and haunts the bog afterwards.”

2. “One Way or Another” by Blondie – “It’s actually a song Debbie Harry wrote about an ex-boyfriend that was stalking her.”

3. “Oh My Darling, Clementine” (traditional American folk song) – “Oh My Darling, Clementine. It’s an oldie but a song that many people know. The song is about a girl who slips and drowns in a quarry, and her father isn’t a good swimmer so he is unable to rescue her in time. He then commits suicide. The end.”

4. “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen – “Most people see it as this patriotic song and play it on July 4th and stuff but it's an ironic, somewhat bitter anti-US Vietnam War song. It's inappropriate because of the settings you typically find it playing - yay America! parties, political rallies, etc.”

5. “Every Breath You Take” by The Police – “This one even baffles Sting. He had written it to be about a stalker, something menacing and threatening... and people listen to it as it it’s a love song.”

6. “99 Luftballons (99 Red Balloons)” by Nena – “It sounds pretty childish and very happy... It’s about nuclear Armageddon.”

7. “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes – “The wife writes an ad about cheating on her husband and taking a vacation, the husband (not knowing it was her) replies to it, wanting to cheat on his wife and take a vacation. They meet at a bar, recognise each other, and laugh, ‘Oh, it’s you!’ And then they go on said vacation.

Tell us in the comments below, what’s your favourite song?

Qantas staff banned from using “gender-inappropriate” words

Qantas staff have been banned from using “gender-inappropriate” words on duty, in a direction from management destined to make employees at Australia’s national carrier feel more comfortable while they’re at the workplace.

The Daily Telegraph reports the airline’s workforce was addressed this week by people and culture group executive Lesly Grant via an information pack, which outlined a range of gender specific terms that were to be avoided by staff at the airline.

Gender specific terms like “guys”, “love” and “honey” are top of the list of words to be avoided by staff at all times, in a bid to lower the chances of people being offended.

Partner and spouse are also reportedly preferred to husband and while, while the term “parents” is now instructed to be used instead of the words “mum” or “dad”.

A Qantas spokeswoman told Yahoo7 told the content in the info pack was created by the Diversity Council of Australia, and supplied to many other countries.

“We want Qantas to be an inclusive workplace and we shared some factsheets created by the Diversity Council of Australia with some suggestions on more inclusive language, particularly on gender, age and LGBTI issues,” she said.

What are your thoughts? Do you think this move is necessary?
