Jockey reunited with Melbourne Cups after leaving them in a taxi

A three-time winner of the Melbourne Cup has been reunited with the prized trophies after accidentally leaving them in the back of a taxi.

Glen Boss was on a trip to Sydney with his three winning Cups when he accidentally left them in the back of a 13cabs taxi, only realising his mistake as the cab drove away.

Rushing to another engagement after having addressed the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase Calcutta in the Sydney CBD, Boss was too late to hail back the cab driver in possession of his trophies.

Lucky for him, Sydney taxi driver Gedy Hildid was determined to return the cups to their rightful owner.

Despite having no familiarity with racing, and certainly no idea of the significance of the cups themselves, Hildid managed to track Boss down and return his prized trophies.

“As you would understand, the Cups mean the world to me, and I was super grateful to get them back,” Boss told news.com.au.

Speaking to the publication, 13cabs Chief Operating Office Olivia Barry praised Hildid, saying, “It was such a wonderful story because the driver did not know what they were, he wasn’t familiar with racing and had no idea what he was returning.”

“I think that’s what’s so special about that story actually, he just wanted to get them back to their owner."

The award-winning jockey is not the only one to leave something important in a taxi, as 13cabs - Australia's largest taxi network - released its 2024 lost property list, highlighting the weirdest and wackiest items left behind by passengers.

Amidst all the usual items of wallets and phones left in cabs, drivers were occasionally met with more unusual finds, such as a deck chair, bags of raw meat and even a prosthetic leg.

Meet the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup

Michelle Payne has become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

Ms Payne, 30, ran a great race on Tuesday with Prince of Penzance, which is quite a feat when you consider the 101-1 odds some of the bookmakers were giving before the race started.

Michelle and her brother Stephen

Image credit: Twitter / Sylvia Jeffreys

The only woman racing in the premier event, Ms Payne described the win as “unbelievable, a dream come true”, but also took a moment to note the chauvinistic side of the male-dominated sport.

“It is such a chauvinistic sport, some of the owners wanted to kick me off the horse,” Ms Payne said. “But I gave it everything I got. I want to say to everyone else get stuffed, they think women aren't strong enough but we just beat the world.”

This is Ms Payne’s second run at “the race that stops a nation”, after her first ride in 2009. She’s only the fourth female jockey in history to compete in the prestigious race.

At the victory presentation Ms Payne said: “Racing is a very male dominated sport. But you know what? It’s not all about strength. It’s about getting a horse into a rhythm for you. It’s being patient.”

Hero image credit: Twitter / ABC Grandstand
