Why Lisa Marie Presley kept son's body at home for two months after his death

Lisa Marie Presley was so heartbroken by the loss of her only son, Benjamin Keough, at just 27-years-old in 2020, that she kept his body in her home for two months after his death.

The star revealed this in her memoir From Here to the Great Unknown, which was finished by her daughter Riley Keough after the 54-year-old’s death in January 2023, according to Page Six.

In the book, Lisa Marie opened up about the extent of her grief, saying that she had to force herself to "fight" to stay alive for her remaining children, and one of the ways she coped was not saying goodbye to Benjamin right away.

“My house has a separate casitas bedroom and I kept Ben Ben in there for two months. There is no law in the state of California that you have to bury someone immediately,” Lisa Marie wrote.

“I found a very empathetic funeral homeowner. I told her that having my dad in the house after he died was incredibly helpful because I could go and spend time with him and talk to him. She said, ‘We’ll bring Ben Ben to you.’”

The room was kept at around 12 degrees celsius to preserve his body, and the star continued saying that she felt “fortunate that there was a way that I could still parent him, delay it a bit longer so that I could become okay with laying him to rest.”

Another reason why she decided to keep his body was because she wasn't sure whether to bury him in Hawaii or at Graceland, the Memphis estate where Elvis died and is buried.

At one point, Riley and Lisa Marie decided to honour Benjamin by getting matching tattoos of his name, which was inscribed in the same place where Benjamin had his tattoos.

Riley recalled the odd moment Lisa Marie brought in the tattoo artist into her home.

“Lisa Marie Presley had just asked this poor man to look at the body of her dead son, which happened to be right next to us in the casitas. I’ve had an extremely absurd life, but this moment is in the top five," Riley wrote in the memoir.

Lisa Marie acknowledged that it was odd, and soon after the tattoo day, they "got the vibe" that Benjamin wanted to be laid to rest.

“Even my mum said that she could feel him talking to her, saying ‘This is insane, Mum, what are you doing? What the f**k!”

The family held a funeral for Benjamin in Malibu, and he was buried at Graceland alongside Elvis, and now Lisa Marie as well.

Image: Copetti/Photofab/ Shutterstock Editorial

Readers response: What’s the longest friendship you’ve had, and what has kept it strong?

When it comes. to friendships, it has long been said that people come into your life for a season, a reason or a lifetime.

These "lifetime" relationships are often the friends we made when we were young, who have been by our side through thick and thin.

We asked our readers what their longest friendships have been and what made them so strong, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Linda Cox - 72 years. We were toddlers when we met and even though we have lived on opposite sides of the planet for the last 50 years, we are still best friends.

Rae Meihuizen - 62 years. We met as a school friend of my cousin. He was my best man at my wedding and still a very dear friend to this day.

Jennie Harley - My friend from school in Sydney living in same street. Although we live a long way apart & haven’t actually seen each other in many years, our phone calls, although sometimes we are both very slack, the relationship is always the same. No explaining things from the past just mutual understanding and love.

Marilyn Carter - 60 years. We all met doing our hairdressing apprenticeship. We love each other so much and do anything for each and every one of us.

Guila Kelly - Met at age 4 in prekinder. Born 2 weeks apart, both turn 80 shortly. Never a cross word.

Marjorie Smith - 82 years. Met at school in NZ when we were 10 years old. Still friends but in different countries. My friend was one of our bridesmaids in 1954.

Margaret Inglis - 74 years. Our mums were next to each other in hospital when we were born. I'm a day older, but even when my parents moved, Jennie and I would spend a few days each school holidays at each other's places. In 1969 I moved to Australia (from NZ) and we STILL catch up via FB etc. Went back to NZ for a few days about 7 years ago, yep, met up again and it was like we'd never been apart.

Ros Bieg - 64yrs. Unconditional friendship and sooo many memories.

Margaret Woodhouse - 68 years. We met at 12 and are 80 this year. Both totally different in personality, but tolerant of the differences and respect each other’s beliefs. Live in different states in Australia but FaceTime twice a week and spend 3-4 weeks together every year.

Prince Philip’s will to be kept sealed for 90 years

The UK High Court has ruled that Prince Philip’s will is to remain secret so as to protect the “dignity” of Queen Elizabeth, owing to her constitutional role. Philip died in April at the age of 99 following almost 74 years as the Queen’s consort.

Sir Andrew McFarlane, president of the Family Division of the High Court, heard arguments from lawyers representing Philip’s estate and the attorney general, who represents the public interest, in a private hearing in July, and published the court’s ruling on Thursday.

In the ruling, McFarlane ordered that Philip’s will remain sealed for 90 years, and even after that date, may only be opened in private. The judge said: “I have held that, because of the constitutional position of the sovereign, it is appropriate to have a special practice in relation to royal wills. There is a need to enhance the protection afforded to truly private aspects of the lives of this limited group of individuals in order to maintain the dignity of the sovereign and close members of her family.”

According to The Guardian, it has been convention for over a century that following the death of a senior member of the royal family, an application to seal their will is made to the president of the family division of the High Court. This means their wills are not publicly available the way most wills are.

McFarlane also ruled that any future judgements on applications to seal wills belonging to members of the royal family would remain closed, and therefore will not be made public.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died on April 9th of this year, following a 73-year marriage to Queen Elizabeth, making him the longest-serving royal consort in world history. At the time, Buckingham Palace released a statement reading, "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Images: Danny Lawson - WPA Pool/Getty Images, Bettmann/Getty Images

Best-kept Kmart secrets from a former employee

A former Kmart employee has revealed the shopping hacks every customer should see.

In a video titled ‘10 Kmart Secrets From A Former Employee’, which has already gone viral on YouTube, Rita Kaminski shares tips on how to nab the best deals and when the best times to shop are.

The 23-year-old, who worked at Kmart for four years, revealed the important reason why you should check your barcodes before heading to the checkout.

“The last digit on the barcode changes every new season,” she said.

“So if there are two toasters that look exactly the same and the last digit of one barcode is eight and the other is nine, the one with the eight should be cheaper.”

She added: “It has to be the same model, they just tweak the product and the price I found doesn’t come up straight away on the system.”

Rita also shared tips on how to trawl through the store to pick up a bargain.

“A lot of the stock will always change in price,” she said. “If it’s something that isn’t in the catalogue but it has been in the store for a long time, especially clothes, they can sometimes go on sale for as little as $1.

“There was a time when every single book was discounted to 20 cents. I bought about 20 books,” she revealed.

“So if you’re into flipping items make sure you keep checking clothes, books and makeup as well.”

She added that the best time to shop is between 8am and 5pm, when “the full-time and experienced staff members are working, so they are more able to answer your questions”, and that the clothing, books and makeup sections have the best reductions.

Rita also shared the best times during the year when you can nab a bargain.

“The best bargains are right after Christmas and after Easter,” she said.

“On Boxing Day there’s a whole section that drops down to between five cents and $5 but it is usually wiped out on Boxing Day by customers so it’s good to come in early.”

In between campaigns like “Back to School” you can also find products marked down across books, clothes, or appliances.

“It’s usually when a newer model/garment has been updated, fixed or isn’t selling,” she said.

“The price will drop down drastically but the item doesn’t really change by much.”

Gough Whitlam letters: Palace reveals major secret kept from the Queen

Palace letters released by the National Archives of Australia reveal Sir John Kerr did not tell the Queen of his intention to dismiss then-prime minister Gough Whitlam before the historic decision came to fruition on 11 November, 1975.

Around 200 letters were released between the former governor-general and the Queen about the dismissal of the Whitlam government.

Sir John wrote to the Queen after he sacked Mr Whitlam that “I should say I decided to take the step I took without informing the palace in advance because, under the constitution, the responsibility is mine".

"I was of the opinion it was better for Her Majesty not to know in advance, though it is of course my duty to tell her immediately."

The letter included three key attachments: the dismissal letter to Mr Whitlam, a legal opinion from the then chief justice Sir Garfield Barwick, and a letter from the opposition leader at the time, Malcolm Fraser.

However, there were other letters that showed Sir John discussed the possibility of dismissing Mr Whitlam months before the event occurred.

Archives director-general David Fricker shared the details surrounding a letter from Sir John to the Queen dated 12 September, 1975.

"I'm also keeping my mind open as to the constitutional issues. If the prime minister and the leader of the opposition get into a battle in which the Senate has defeated the budget, the prime minister refuses to recommend a dissolution, my role will need some careful thought," Sir John wrote.

"So on the 12th of September 1975, Sir John is laying this out," Mr Fricker said.

Sir Martin Charteris, who was the Queen’s secretary wrote back to Sir John, a week before the dismissal, saying he had "reserve powers".

"With great respect, I think you are playing the vice-regal hand with skill and wisdom. Your interest in the situation has been demonstrated, and so has your impartiality.

"The fact you have powers is recognised. But it's also clear you will only use them in the last resort, and then only for constitutional - and not for political - reasons."

On November 20, Sir John sent a much longer explanation.

"For my layperson's eyes, it reads very much like quite a deliberately formulated judgment ... a full exposition of what went through his mind leading up to that point," Archives director-general David Fricker told reporters on Tuesday in a Canberra briefing.

He encouraged people to read the letters and attachments to get the full context of the historical period.

What Princess Diana kept from Prince Charles when she was pregnant with Harry

A royal biographer has revealed an important detail of Princess Diana’s second pregnancy that she kept from her husband.

Andrew Morton says Princess Diana told him she knew she was having a son, but kept it a secret from Prince Charles.

“I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan,” he claimed she recalled to which she added: "Charles always wanted a girl".

The royal couple welcomed Prince William in 1982, less than a year after getting married.

Princess Diana fell pregnant again with Harry around two years later.

Morton says the royal told him her husband “wanted two children, and he wanted a girl.”

Morton said in his autobiography, Diana: Her True Story - in Her Own Words that the late royal told him that although she was extremely excited when Prince Harry was born in 1984, Charles was “less enthusiastic.”

It is rumoured after their second child was born, he had reportedly said “Oh God, it’s a boy,” then commented on the hair of Prince Harry where he said “and he’s even got red hair.”

Prince Charles had apparently made it extremely clear he was unhappy with having another son instead of a daughter, telling Princess Di’s mother, Frances Kydd: "We were so disappointed — we thought it would be a girl" at Harry’s christening.

According to Morton, in Diana’s own words, her mother had snapped at him.

She allegedly told her son-in-law "You should realise how lucky you are to have a child that's normal".

Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996.

In 1997, Princess Di tragically passed away in a car accident.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Prince Harry as a young child.

“They kept walking”: 78-year-old man breaks hip and is left on the road without help

A 78-year-old man was left on the road for an hour and a half without help after falling off his bike, his daughter said.

Karingal resident Allan Mayo-Smith was cycling near Skye Road in Frankston, Melbourne when his front wheel slipped on sand, landing him on concrete and breaking his hip.

His daughter Kathryn Smith said he called on several people who saw him, but they did not go to his aid.

“He saw some people walk past and he was waving at them,” she told the ABC.

“He was screaming ‘help me’, and they just looked at him and kept walking.”

Smith said her father was “left to lie on wet grass” before a father and a son stopped to call an ambulance and take his bicycle for safekeeping.

“I was really disappointed in those people who just looked and then kept going,” she said.

“It’s not hard to check on someone.

“You can check on them a couple of metres away if you’re afraid it’s a set-up or a drug person. But he was in cycle gear, he was an old dude, you know.”

Since the fall earlier this week, Mayo-Smith has had hip replacement surgery.

Smith recalled a similar experience that she had when motorists “were just driving past” as she struggled in a motorbike accident on the Monash Freeway three months ago.

“People stopped, but only the ones that witnesses it. They didn’t get out and help, they saw me struggle to pick the bike up,” she said.

“I think everyone’s just out for themselves these days.”

The blockbuster drug that could prevent Alzheimer's – why has it been kept secret?

A pharmaceutical company discovered that its drug could prevent Alzheimer’s disease, but kept the finding under the radar for four years, it has been revealed.

The Washington Post reported that American pharmaceutical company Pfizer chose not to publish its finding that its anti-inflammatory drug Enbrel, which is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, “could potentially safely prevent, treat and slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease”.

In 2015, a team of researchers inside the company found that Enbrel appeared to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 64 per cent based on an analysis of hundreds of thousands of insurance claims. Researchers in the inflammation and immunology division urged Pfizer to conduct a clinical trial to verify the drug’s efficacy, which is estimated to cost US$80 million.

“Enbrel could potentially safely prevent, treat and slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” read an internal company document dated February 2018.

However, after three years of internal reviews, Pfizer decided against making the data public. The company said the likelihood of a successful clinical trial is low, as the drug does not directly reach brain tissue.

According to company spokesperson Ed Harnaga, the decision was solely based on the fact that the findings failed to meet “rigorous scientific standards”.

Pfizer said the data was not made public because it might mislead outside scientists.

However, researchers said the company should at least make the findings available to a broader audience. “It would benefit the scientific community to have that data out there,” said Keenan Walker, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins.

“Whether it was positive data or negative data, it gives us more information to make better informed decisions.”

Bobbie Farsides, professor of clinical and biomedical ethics at Brighton and Sussex Medical School in London said Pfizer has a responsibility to disclose the positive side effect of the drug. “Having acquired the knowledge, refusing to disclose it to those who might act upon it hides a potential benefit, and thereby wrongs and probably harms those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s by impeding research.”

The difficulty of getting regulatory approval to use a drug for a completely different disease may also play a part in the company’s decision to keep the findings a secret, said Robert Field, a professor of law and health care management at Drexel University. He admitted that it is “frustrating that there may be a missed opportunity”.

Alzheimer’s remains one of the most prevalent diseases among the ageing community. No clear cause, effective cure or preventive measure has been found for the disease so far.

Australia’s best kept secret: 4 reasons why you must visit this remote island paradise

When you think of Australia, many sights come to mind. Whether it’s the Harbour Bridge or Uluru, most Australians feel as if they’ve uncovered every inch of the secluded island. But what if there’s more? What if there’s a small island paradise in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that sits outside mainstream Australia? While it may sound too good to be true, the tiny territory by the name of Norfolk Island is one that needs to be seen to be believed.

With lush greenery spanning over the 8km by 5km island, the people of Norfolk are considered to be some of the friendliest in the world. Surrounded by pristine waters and untouched natural beauty, the island is the closest thing to heaven on earth. Located between Australia and New Zealand, the preserved territory is home to rich culture and history, making it a journey one would never forget. But while you may have already started packing your bags, it’s important to book your travel with those who have a close relationship with the people of Norfolk Island. Spacifica Travel will provide you with the best accommodation operators, tour guides and vendors so you can truly immerse yourself in the experience of visiting Norfolk Island.

But before you book, here are four reasons why Norfolk Island is Australia’s best kept secret:

1. The island is a nature lover’s dream destination

One of the things that makes Norfolk Island unique is the strict laws to protect the native flora and fauna on the island. With 40 different plant species, and not a snake or fruit fly in sight, when you visit the intimate island you get to experience the beauty of mother nature in its purest form. The island is also home to the Norfolk Pine, which – as the name suggests – claims Norfolk Island as its home. You will also find enormous cliffs with panoramic views of the ocean and rainforests that rival the amazon.

2. It’s the perfect place to unwind

We all need to switch off from time to time, whether that’s stepping away from your phone or just letting go of your responsibilities for a few days. Norfolk Island is perfect for those who want to be present and live in the moment. The serene atmosphere and the diverse amount of experiences on offer will make you forget about the outside world and allow you to seclude yourself from the distractions of your day-to-day life.

With delicious cuisines and stunning landscapes, Norfolk Island is the ideal place to experience true relaxation while also creating everlasting memories, ensuring that when you go back home, you start off fresh and on a brand-new page.

3. The journey is hassle-free

Despite Norfolk Island being a tiny volcanic outcrop away from mainland Australia, the territory is still a part of the country, meaning as an Aussie, there’s no need for visas or a passport, and the flight is short and sweet.

Norfolk Island is the best place to getaway when you want to pack your bags and head out the door. It’s also a completely unique experience, as the island’s natural habitat is extremely different to that of Australia. So, if you’re looking for a home away from home, but still prefer to explore a location you haven’t seen before, then this underrated town is only a few hours away.

Spacifica Travel offers a range of packages to suit you and your budget, and to keep everything hassle free, they provide you with flights, transfers, accommodation, car hire and tours so that the only thing you need to worry about is having a good time.

4. It’s a World Heritage Site

The intimate island is home to rich history involving the convict settlement and is also the only site in Australia that displays evidence of early Polynesian settlement. The Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) was listed on the World Heritage list in 2010 for its historical significance.

Old Prison Kingston

KAVHA is one of 11 Australian Convict Sites and is located on the southern side of Norfolk Island. It is made up of a number of buildings from the convict era and is surrounded by picturesque views, much like the rest of the island. The town provides plenty of resources for those wanting to delve deep into the history of Australian settlement and is home to numerous museums that will help expand your knowledge.

You’re most likely packing your bags already and heading out the door!
Olivia Newton-John first battled cancer in 1992 but the Aussie star has revealed that she also fought the disease without her fans knowing in 2013.

The 69-year-old actress and singer revealed in an interview with Channel Seven’s Sunday Night why she chose not to go public with the diagnosis at the time.

“I thought, 'It's my life' and I just decided to keep it to myself,” she admitted.

In early 2013, Olivia was involved in a minor car accident and a lump appeared on her right shoulder.

She confessed on Sunday Night that she initially believed the lump was caused by the strain of her seat belt, until scans revealed that the breast cancer she had beaten two decades earlier had returned.

Olivia explained that it was one of the most difficult periods of her life as her older sister, Rona, died from brain cancer months later.

Olivia beat her second bout of cancer but now, she is battling the disease again after a tumour was found at the base of her spine last year.

The brave Grammy Award winner revealed in the interview that she is using natural remedies to fight the disease, as well as undergoing radiation therapy.

Olivia has removed sugar from her diet and uses marijuana to help ease her physical pain.

The star’s husband of 10 years, John Easterling, is the founder of the Amazon Herb Company and grows cannabis for her at their property in California.

“In California, it's legal to grow a certain amount of plants for your own medicinal purposes ... I'm very lucky that I live in a state where it's legal and that I have a husband that is a plant-medicine man,” she said.

Despite her health battles, Olivia remains thankful for all the blessings in her life.

“There are other people out there doing much, much worse than me. I'm a very privileged person, and I'm very aware of that,” she said.

“I live in this beautiful place. I have a wonderful husband. I have all the animals that I adore. I have an incredible career. I have nothing, really, to complain about.”

When asked if she was worried about the cancer, she responded: “I believe I will win over it, and that's my goal.”

Amanda Keller opens up about her struggle to have children: "I kept failing"

Amanda Keller has opened up about her struggles to have children in an interview with Chezzi Denyer on her podcast, Mum Stories.

Amanda, who now has two teenage sons, spoke candidly about her heartbreak over IVF and “mum guilt”.

“The mother I pictured myself to be isn’t necessarily the mother I am," she said.

"I thought I would love reading stories at night time and pushing children on swings; I am not good at that stuff. I think I’m a good mother but I’m not mumsy in that way. I didn’t feel maternal.

"When you’re told you can’t [fall pregnant] it becomes something quite different. I’d been set a task - three years of IVF and I kept failing. I became more desperate the longer it went on.”

She fell pregnant in 2000 but Amanda said she thought she’d miscarried during the Sydney Olympic Games.

“I started to bleed and just thought I’d been so close. 'Please, please, please,' I kept praying. That [bleeding] was the other embryos coming away and [eldest son] Liam stuck. I could feel the whiff of change and after I saw the heartbeat following a trip to the doctor, I stopped the car and just cried. [My husband] Harley had been guarded, protecting his emotions. Once I was six weeks pregnant I was terrified and I could barely admit it to anyone, but Harley was the opposite, wearing his heart on his sleeve.”

Amanda described the birth itself as “awful”, adding, “I wished he was back inside and I could control it. It felt like my insides had been scraped.”

As a new mum, Amanda had trouble breastfeeding.

“I used to dread the night and I was terrified. Like a horror film. That cry that pierces the night. The fatigue,” she said. “He wouldn’t feed. In the middle of winter, I used to have to put cold cloths on him to wake him up!”

Asked by Chezzi if she ever experienced mother guilt, Amanda replied, “I think it’s a choice and I chose not to. I don’t read a lot of the emails from school and that’s when I feel it. When the other mums know what’s going on at school and I don’t know. Now I say to the boys, ‘If there’s something that really matters, and you want me to be there, I’ll drop everything to do it.'

"I don’t feel guilty for working and I’m happy the boys see someone who loves their career. “Torture device”: Derryn Hinch says vaginal mesh recipients were “kept in the dark”

Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch has made a passionate plea at the senate inquiry into the use of vaginal mesh to treat urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, which has left thousands of women with life-changing physical damage and pain.

After the senate committee made the recommendation that vaginal mesh only be used as a last resort and only with fully informed consent, tabling a report with 13 suggested changes to its use, senators from all sides of politics agreed that such a devastating medical scandal can never happen again.

“Many women who have had transvaginal mesh implants have had devastating complications resulting in ongoing emotional trauma, embarrassment, shame, depression, debilitating pain, recurring infection and a poor quality of life,” Greens senator and committee chair, Rachel Siewert, said.

Senator Hinch said the committee had heard from many women who felt they had been let down by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

“Having first been told there’s only a one per cent chance of an adverse reaction, they have since been treated like mushrooms,” the Human Headline said.

“Kept in the dark and fed bulls*** by doctors, hospital administrators, the drug companies and sadly even the TGA.”

He described the tragedy as “the biggest medical scandal for Australian women since thalidomide in the 1950s and 1960s, when kids were born without arms and legs.”

Senator Hinch said people affected by this “torture device” deserve justice. “This should never have happened. We need to fix it. We need to be providing support for these women.”
