Readers response: Is there any item of memorabilia you’ve passed down to family or plan to in the future?

As in many families, there are often sentimental items and memorabilia that are passed down from several generations.

We asked our readers if there are any heirlooms that they have passed down to their younger family members, or if they plan to, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Marjorie Gale - The christening gown made by my Aunt in the UK in 1955 for my eldest daughter, worn by my two other daughters. Now been worn by my 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, and another due soon. So far 24 babies have worn it.

Dawn Douglas - Yes, I have my Mums jewellery box and my eldest daughter will get it when I’m gone. I also have a brooch that belonged to my Nana.

Sue Crawley - I have a 1925 gold embossed book by AA Milne “When We Were Very Young”. My most cherished memory was sitting on my great grandfathers knee whilst he read it to me. Not sure yet which grandchild will receive it.

Greg Browning - A Winchester rifle my great grandfather bought in the 1800s. Have already passed it on.

Marion Ingram - Family bassinets. Now on its 4th generation!

Margie Buckingham - My grandmother’s costume jewellery was stunning. She was a racehorse breeder always in the Flemington Racecourse members, even had many Group One winners, so her jewellery had to look special.

Paul Uttley - A silver pocket knife that belonged to my great grandfather now belongs to my oldest grandson (six generations apart)!

Readers response: What piece of travel memorabilia brings back the best memories for you?

When we travel, many of us love to pick up a souvenir to remind us of our holidays and the destinations we loved.

We asked our readers what piece of travel memorabilia brings back the best memories, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Jan Hall - Christmas Decorations! Then when I put my tree up it’s like a trip down memory lane, first one was 1973 from Singapore our first overseas holiday.

Debra Stone - A letter opener with a Paua shell on the handle. New Zealand wouldn't let us take it in our luggage, so we posted it home to ourselves!

Becky Murfet - In 1984 we went to Europe and I collected match boxes from different countries. Have them in a large glass bowl. Great to look at for memories sake.

Caron Castner - Stines from Germany.

Margie Buckingham - A palm-sided wooden carved elephant from a side trip off my cruise from Singapore to Malaysia & Thailand and back to celebrate my 40th. It sits on my mantelpiece so to deliberately trigger good memories of a younger me.

Frank Nieuwenhuis - 2300 year old oil lamp bought in Israel.

Fay Russell - Turkish tea set.

Valma Blake - Of all the things I've bought on my travels, my favourite is my cat ornament collection that are decorated relative to the country or area I visited.

Man spends $7,000 on royal piece of cake

A man has spent almost $8,000 on a piece of cake from Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding.

Avid royal fan Gerry Layton from Yorkshire in the UK purchased the 41-year-old large slice of cake which came from one of the 23 wedding cakes used at the couple’s wedding in 1981.

The 62-year-old first bought the piece of cake for £2170 ($3840) at an auction last year in August before deciding to donate it to a local charity ball auction.

It was only last week that the slice of memorabilia which has the royal coat of arms in gold, red, blue and silver went up for auction again and Gerry realised he hadn’t even tasted it.

"After some free champagne, I suddenly got the urge and thought 'I haven't even had a bite of it yet'," he told The Yorkshire Post.

This time round, Gerry paid £2100 ($3700) for the cake and said “I don't care if it kills me” but he will taste it.

"It's 41 years old but I definitely am going to have a bite."

Gerry has not ruled out donating the piece of cake again but only after he has tasted it.

Dave Avery who was the head baker of the Royal Navy said he had met up with Princess Diana before her big day.

"She said to me, 'I want a wedding cake and not a monument', so she was quite happy.

"There was nothing much [known] about Diana, so it ended up being more of a naval type of cake – all I could do was the Spencer crest.”

Images: Twitter

QEII's Platinum Jubilee memorabilia ruined by major typo

More than 10,000 items of royal memorabilia have been printed with a small, but very costly mistake.

The cups, mugs and plates were commissioned by a British company to commemorate the Queen's upcoming Platinum Jubilee, but were printed with a glaring typo.

Below a picture of Her Majesty, the words “To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II”, were meant to be printed.

But instead, it read, “To commemorate the Platinum Jubbly of Queen Elizabeth II.”

The typo is believed to be a result fo a translation error at a Chinese factory where the memorabilia was being manufactured.

Due to the error, the items commemorating the Queen's 70 year reign were unable to be used for official use, and were bought by a wholesale company in the UK and listed for sale.

“The manufacturers produced some wonderful souvenir items in an attempt to muscle in on the Queen’s upcoming Platinum Jubilee but were left high and dry when their fulfilment Partner in the UK decided they would not take the souvenir stock due to a translation error,” Wholesale Clearance UK said.

The typo made the hosts of Sunrise laugh at the error on Thursday morning.

“Love that” Natalie Barr said with a laugh.

“Does jubbly mean the same in the UK as sort of the slang here in Australia?” Kochie asked, to which Natalie replied she’d never heard of the term.

Kochie then quickly shut down questioning, denying he knew the definition of the word.

The UK is set to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June.

Royal memorabilia once owned by Prince William and Kate is up for grabs

An impressive piece of royal memorabilia is up for grabs.

The personal vehicle of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a black Range Rover, is up for auction.

The pricey item has been labelled as a “rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle with royal roots”.

Prince William and Duchess Kate used the luxury vehicle in 2013 – the same year Prince George was born.

It is now being offered by auction house Bonhams with the expectation for it to sell between $54,000 - $72,000.

The car has been billed as an “ex-royal household” vehicle and even comes with its original number plate.

"Usually, Land Rovers and Range Rovers used by the Royal Household have the vehicle registration numbers changed once out of service, making it difficult to confirm their famous history," the listing on Bonhams' website reads.

Range Rovers and Land Rovers have long been popular choices for the royal family.

"Overall we are told the car is in excellent condition and drives very well, presenting itself as a rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle with Royal roots," the listing says.

The car isn't being sold by William and Kate, as it was purchased in July 2020, from a used car dealership before it came into Bonhams’ possession.

The late Prince Philip’s 2016-plated Range Rover was up for sale back in 2018 with the eye-watering price of $234,340.

The vehicle was fit out with custom features, including covert lighting and police emergency lights, along with grab handles for the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth.

Most notably, the same vehicle was used by Prince Philip to pick up then-US President Barack Obama during a state visit to the United Kingdom back in 2016.

Quirky items that fetched millions at auction

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that certainly rings true for people who have spent tonnes of cash on some really odd things. Here, we round up the weirdest, and a few of the coolest, things people have paid big money for. Have a look and see if you would have done the same!

A banana duct-taped to a wall

It’s hard to say what is art anymore. One may think of the Mona Lisa, while another might value, say, a banana duct-taped to a wall. We’re not being cute. That is literally what someone bought at the Art Basel art fair in Miami recently.

Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial piece, titled Comedian, sold for a whopping $120,000. The point of the piece, said the gallerist who sold the pricey fruit, was to question what “art” is. Looks like someone found the piece rather a-peeling, after all.

The last violin played on the Titanic

One of the most memorable tales from the tragic sinking of the Titanic is the eight-piece band that played until the end. Led by English musician Wallace Hartley, the band played their instruments as the ship sank into the frozen waters of the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to help soothe scared passengers.

According to CNN, “Hartley’s body was reportedly pulled from the water days after the April 1912 sinking with his violin case still strapped to his back.”

More than a century later, in 2013, Hartley’s damaged violin was sold at an auction for $1.7 million in less than 10 minutes. It is the most expensive artefact linked to the doomed ship.

John Lennon’s toilet

Imagine all the ways you can spend your money…and then think about this. One Beatles fan spent nearly $15,000 on a flowered porcelain toilet once owned by John Lennon.

The luxe loo came from an English estate owned by Lennon and Yoko Ono. When Lennon had the toilet replaced, he told the builders “to put some flowers in it or something,” according to the auction catalogue.

The estate, Tittenhurst Park, was where Lennon recorded his legendary Imagine album and film. Hopefully, the toilet was as inspiring to its new owner!

Queen Victoria’s undies

And speaking of bathroom inspiration, cotton knickers owned by Queen Victoria (Queen Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother) sold in 2015 for $16,300.

Embroidered with her royal initials, “VR” for Victoria Regina, the undies were in pristine shape, having been wrapped in tissue and kept in a temperature-controlled room.

There was something unique about these roomy drawers, which boasted a 114cm drawstring waist.

“On these particular knickers, there is a chevron section, which is where they were taken up slightly as Queen Victoria got older and essentially she shrunk in stature,” auctioneer Richard Edmonds told People.com.

“That element got the collectors really excited, because you can then date them quite specifically to the last 10 years of her life.”

A lock of Elvis Presley’s hair

A hunka, chunka hair from the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, sold for $115,000 to an eager fan back in 2002.

Saved from his barber, who also used to dye his sandy-blonde hair jet black, the trimmings had been kept in a plastic bag since the singer’s death in 1977, until they were sold for a king’s ransom.

Other big-ticket Elvis items that sold at auction include his 24-carat gold-leaf grand piano; his peacock jumpsuit; and one of his very first recordings of a song called “My Happiness,” which was bought by White Stripes musician Jack White.

Marilyn Monroe’s white dress

It was the dress that launched a thousand gasps. Mnuchin, an art dealer and the father of US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and it set the world-record price for a work by a living artist.

The rabbit is considered one of the most iconic works of art of the 20th century, and a blow-up version of it appeared in the Macy’s Day parade in 2007.

The work has influenced generations of artists, even the aforementioned Damien Hirst. Prince's Purple Rain jacket up for auction

A rare piece of movie memorabilia from Prince's 1984 classic film Purple Rain is hitting the auction block.

Prince donned the black and white blazer with leather sleeves while riding a motorcycle with co-star Apollonia Kotero.

"It's definitely the most important piece of screen-worn Prince clothing that's ever come up for auction," said Joe Maddalena, president of the Calabasas, California-based auction house, Profiles in History.

"This is a signature piece of wardrobe worn from an iconic movie in his most famous role."

The coat is a unique find from the typically reclusive artist, who was found dead at his Paisley Park complex just outside of Minneapolis.

"Prince memorabilia in general, it just really doesn't exist. It seems like he controlled it all," Maddalena said.

"This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time because the rest of the costumes may be in his (personal) wardrobe."

The original seller said her sister, a makeup artist, received the piece from Prince after they worked together on Purple Rain.

The June 29 auction will also include costumes from Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys and a Swarovski crystal studded glove from Michael Jackson's 1992 "Dangerous" world tour.

Maddalena said he believes the Purple Rain blazer will be the "star of the show" and expects it to sell for much more than the asking price, US$6000 to US$8000.

"Hopefully it will reach a price that is equivalent to his stature as a musician," he said.

Written by Nicole Evatt, first appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

10 most iconic movie shots of all time

The 15 most expensive films ever made

10 of Paul Newman’s best looks
