Update on search for Samantha Murphy

A fresh search for the body of Samantha Murphy, 51, has been initiated months after her disappearance and the discovery of her mobile phone near a dam. Murphy was last seen on February 4 when she left for a 14km run through the Canadian State Forest, a route she frequently travelled.

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said, "Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad as well as a range of specialist resources from across Victoria Police, New South Wales Police, and the Australian Federal Police are involved in the search."

The renewed search, which began on Tuesday and continues today, focuses on bushland near Grenville, a new area in the Ballarat region. Despite numerous efforts, Murphy's body has yet to be found. The police have urged the public to stay away from the area to avoid interfering with the investigation.

Murphy’s mobile phone was recovered in June by detectives near a dam in Buninyong, about 10 minutes from her home in Ballarat. The phone was found undamaged in its teal-coloured case and was still functional. Earlier searches were conducted in the Buninyong area and the Canadian State Forest, but they yielded no results.

The disappearance of the Victorian mother has gripped the local community, with many participating in earlier searches. Her family has been kept informed of the ongoing investigation.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, remains in custody as the primary suspect in Murphy’s disappearance. Stephenson, the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson, was last in court on August 8 and is not expected to appear again until November 14.

Prosecutors requested a 12-week adjournment during the August hearing to review a brief of evidence, which includes extensive CCTV footage.

The investigation continues as police and specialists work tirelessly to locate Murphy’s remains and bring closure to her family.

Images: Supplied

Never-before-seen footage shows moments after JFK assassination

Never-before-seen footage of aftermath of United States President John F. Kennedy's assassination has emerged, more than six decades after his murder.

The film footage will soon be sold through RR action, and shows the moment JFK's motorcade sped toward Parkland Hospital as Clint Hill, Jackie Kennedy’s Secret Service agent, shields both her and the president.

"This is remarkable, in colour, and you can feel the 80mph (130km/h)," said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of the auction house.

The 8mm home film was captured by Dale Carpenter Sr. and began with him filming other vehicles in the motorcade as it travelled down Lemmon Avenue toward the city centre.

The film then picks up after Kennedy was shot, and shows Clint Hill - who famously jumped onto the back of the limousine as the shots were fired - hovering in a standing position over the president and first lady.

"I did not know that there were not any more shots coming," Agent Hill, who is now 92-years-old, said.

"I had a vision that, yes, there probably were going to be more shots when I got up there as I did."

In an interview with People magazine, he said that the discovery of the film is “an emotional thing for me because I know what has happened. I know what I’m seeing in that film is a dead president.”

The assassination itself was famously captured on film by Abraham Zapruder, and according to Livingston, the executive vice president of the auction house, the footage captured by Carpenter is "unlike any other footage known to exist".

"This film captures a segment immediately following the Zapruder film, providing a fresh perspective on one of the most analyzed moments in history," he continued.

"Once you see it, you'll never forget Clint Hill's heroic efforts to protect Mrs. Kennedy, racing at 80 miles an hour in a desperate attempt to save the president's life as they sped to Parkland."

Carpenter's grandson, James Gate, said that his family had always known about the footage, but they rarely talked about the footage which was stored along with other family films in a milk crate.

It wasn't until after his grandfather's death from Parkinson's disease when his mother decided to hand down family mementos and the film landed in Gate's possession.

While he was initially underwhelmed by the film when he watched the footage, it was when he saw the aftermath of the assassination that he was "shocked".

In 2012, Gates got in touch with Agent Hill and his wife Lisa McCubbin Hill, to show them the footage.

Agent Hill's wife said that while knew about the events that unfolded on the tragic day, "to see the footage of it actually happen ... just kind of makes your heart stop."

“When you see the president’s limousine, you see Clint on the back of the car. To see the speed of the car and how precarious that was — Clint is still trying to protect the president and Mrs. Kennedy from whatever else might be coming.

"One slip and he would have gone flying off and he would have been killed,” she told People magazine.

Stephen Fagin, curator at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination on November 22, 1963, said: "These images, these films and photographs, a lot of times they are still out there. They are still being discovered or rediscovered in attics or garages."

The film will be up for auction in northeastern US city of Boston on September 28, with online bidding already underway.

Images: RR Auction / Public Domain

The man accused of murdering Samantha Murphy has faced court to an "unprecedented" amount of evidence.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, has been charged with the murder of mother-of-three Murphy, 51, at Mount Clear, after she went missing on February 4th.

Stephenson was arrested in March, as the police investigation into the location of Murphy's body continued to no avail.

Appearing before the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court via video link from prison, Stephenson was told he will wait behind bars for another three months before his case returns due to the "unprecedented" brief of evidence against him.

Prosecutors asked the court to adjourn the committal mention for 12 weeks in order to allow them to go through a brief of evidence which contains "extensive" CCTV footage.

"We appreciate that is a significant period of time," prosecutor Daniel White told the court. "The brief is extensive and involves an extensive amount of CCTV footage."

Stephenson's barrister Moya O'Brien agreed to the three-month delay as she said the evidence brief had only recently been served on defence and was "described as unprecedented in terms of size".

Magistrate Mark Stratmann said three months was "a long time" for Stephenson and the community to wait, although agreed to allow the adjournment.

Stephenson was remanded back into custody until the case returns to the Ballarat court on November 14.

Stephenson's court appearance comes just days after Samantha Murphy’s loved ones marked six months since she vanished.

New development in Samantha Murphy murder case

In a significant turn of events, Patrick Stephenson, the man charged with the murder of Samantha Murphy, has secured high-profile legal representation. Samantha Murphy, a beloved mother of three, disappeared after going for a run on Sunday, February 4. Despite extensive searches near her home in Ballarat, her body has not been found.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, was charged with the 51-year-old’s murder in March. He has now enlisted the services of renowned solicitor Paul Galbally from Melbourne law firm Galbally O’Bryan.

Galbally is recognised for his expertise in handling some of the country’s largest and most intricate criminal cases, with previous clients including the late Catholic Cardinal George Pell, who was initially convicted but later acquitted of historic child sex charges.

In a major breakthrough in the investigation, police discovered Samantha Murphy’s missing phone last Wednesday. The phone, found in a dam about 19km south of the Murphy family home, is in near-perfect condition despite being submerged in mud. Forensic testing on the phone is ongoing and could provide crucial information about her final movements.

Samantha's husband, Mick, confirmed the phone belonged to his wife immediately upon being informed by the police. The recovery of the phone was a moment of subdued celebration for the officers, with footage from the ABC showing them hugging and shaking hands at the discovery site.

Cybersecurity expert Nigel Phair called the phone’s recovery a “game changer” for the investigation. “The physical properties of the phone will obviously be damaged," he said. "But what’s behind it, those ones and zeros of data, will be retrievable.”

Samantha Murphy was last seen leaving her Eureka Street home in Ballarat at around 7 am for a 14km run through the Woowookarung Regional Park. Police believe she reached the Mount Clear area, adjacent to the park, about an hour after leaving home. Subsequent searches by police and volunteers have yet to locate any trace of her.

In February, a large group of volunteers gathered at Ballarat’s Eureka Stockade Memorial Park to search the surrounding bushland, using metal detectors and even a sniffer dog. Later, police conducted a targeted search of Buninyong Bushland Reserve, employing specialist units including mounted officers, the dog squad and motorcyclists. This search was driven by intelligence from multiple sources.

Patrick Stephenson, who has not yet entered a plea, is scheduled to appear at Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on August 8, facing charges of Samantha Murphy’s murder. The case continues to unfold as investigators hope the data recovered from Samantha's phone will provide new leads and bring them closer to solving this tragic mystery.

Images: Supplied / Facebook

Everything we know about Samantha Murphy's accused killer

The disappearance of Samantha Murphy, a beloved mother-of-three, sent shockwaves through the quiet community of Ballarat. As details emerged, the focus shifted towards Patrick Orren Stephenson, a young man accused of the crime, whose life story offers a complex juxtaposition of privilege, athletic ambition and now, alleged tragedy.

Patrick Stephenson, now 22 years old, grew up in the shadow of his father, Orren Stephenson, a prominent figure in the world of AFL. Orren's late-life draft into the AFL introduced Patrick to the glamorous world of professional sports at a young age. Patrick, often seen tagging along with his father, had a firsthand view of the prestige and camaraderie within the football clubs, an experience many boys would envy.

The Stephenson family, well-regarded in the Ballarat community, seemed to exude an aura of positivity. However, perceptions of Patrick were mixed among locals. While a local newspaper once featured him advocating for road safety alongside his football friends, news of his arrest painted a different picture, depicting him as a troubled teenager.

On a fateful Thursday, Patrick Stephenson was charged with the murder of Samantha Murphy, whose disappearance had gripped the community since February 4. Despite initial suppression orders, details about the accused began to surface, shedding light on his upbringing and associations.

Patrick's childhood was steeped in football culture, mirroring his father's passion for the sport. Orren Stephenson's stint in the AFL provided the family with unique opportunities, including access to elite football circles. Patrick, enamoured with the lifestyle his father's career afforded, embraced the world of football wholeheartedly.

Neighbours recall a seemingly happy home life for the Stephensons, with Patrick attending private schools known for their conservative values and strong sporting traditions. However, in recent years, Patrick's involvement with the local football scene had waned, signalling a potential shift in his priorities.

The arrest of Patrick Stephenson in Scotsburn, a rural hamlet near Ballarat, left the community in disbelief. Residents, unaware of any motive or connection to the accused, expressed shock at the unfolding events.

Despite extensive searches and appeals for information from the police, the whereabouts of Samantha Murphy's body remains unknown, adding to the sense of unease gripping the region.

As the Ballarat community grapples with the loss of Samantha Murphy, questions linger about the events leading to her tragic demise. Patrick Stephenson's life, once intertwined with the glamour of professional football, now stands at the centre of a harrowing investigation that in many was has only just begun.

Images: Redan Football Club / Supplied.

Warnie stars hospitalised after romantic romp goes painfully wrong

The stars of Channel Nine’s Warnie miniseries have quite the emergency room story to share after filming a sex scene for the show hit them for six.

Alex Williams and Marny Kennedy - the pair embodying the late Shane Warne and his ex-wife Simone Callahan on screen - were filming in Melbourne late in 2022 when the incident occurred.

And while they can see the funny side of it all now, at the time it was a far more embarrassing - and injury-stricken - affair.

As Kennedy told The Daily Telegraph, the two had been filming “a little makeout scene” - set back when Shane and Simone were in their younger years - when things took a turn.

She detailed how they had been going down a corridor, and “were meant to push into the bedroom and land on the bed”. But, unfortunately for the pair, they didn’t heed the Warne-ing, and instead they “both completely missed the bed.

“Alex cracked the back of his head open and I broke my right wrist.”

Kennedy shared that they “ended up sitting in the emergency room together”, and that his head was wrapped in a bandage, while her wrist was strapped.

To add to their situation, Kennedy said, “it was not like a normal hospital either, it was more of a place for the elderly, so it was just Alex and I with our bleached hair, fully still in wardrobe, sitting there surrounded by elderly residents.”

Despite their injuries, and any lingering embarrassment, the co-stars - who had also been friends for a decade at that point - returned to set the very next day to get on with the job.

Kennedy didn’t reveal whether or not anyone had taken the opportunity to adorn her cast with a Golden Duck, but that there had been some banter on set in the wake of their accident, with the actress revealing that “we took a photo of ourselves in the emergency room and then printed it onto mugs and that was our wrap [end of filming] gift to a lot of the crew."

It is believed that the two-part series will go to air later in June, regardless of the public outcry when the trailer first dropped during the 2023 State of Origin series.

Images: Screentime

Betrayed wife found not guilty of intentionally hitting husband and mistress with car

A jury has been unable to decide whether or not Christie Kennedy, 37, ran down her husband and alleged mistress, after discovering he was having an affair.

The Brisbane-based woman faced District Court recently where she pleaded not guilty to two counts of malicious acts with intent to disable, denying deliberately hitting David Larkin and Zowie Noring with her BMW SUV in March, 2021.

The prosecution had also presented the option of two lesser alternative charges of assault which include occasioning bodily harm while armed, but Ms Kennedy pleaded not guilty to those offences as well.

Allegedly at the time of the incident, Kennedy got out of her car, grabbed Noring by the hair and repeatedly punched her while screaming obscenities, the District Court heard.

Kennedy said she did not intend to hit the pair with her car and had been in shock, not realising what was going on. On Monday afternoon she was found not guilty with a majority verdict by the jury on two counts of malicious acts with intent to disable.

However, the jury could not reach a unanimous or majority verdict for the alternative charges of two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed.

She had pleaded guilty to unlawful assault, however the jury has been discharged and the matter is listed for mention on September 15.

Image: Nine
