"Pure terror" after Jetstar passenger climbs out onto wing

A passenger onboard a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Melbourne has recalled the "commotion" when a man opened the emergency door just seconds after the plane landed.

Audrey Varghese was on the flight that landed at Tullamarine airport on Thursday morning, and said the trouble began when the man became very agitated as soon as the plane touched down.

“It’s assumed common knowledge that you stay in your seats until the seatbelt sign is turned off, but he got up as the plane was still moving," the 2GB producer told 7News.

“The cabin crew were sort of shocked at the fact that he would even do that.”

When the plane eventually came to a stop, Varghese said the man charged to the emergency exit rows and forced passengers out of their seats to get to the emergency door.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by 7NEWS Sydney (@7newssyd)

The man then managed to open the emergency exit door and climbed out onto the wing of the plane, causing terror among the rest of the passengers.

“There was a bit of a commotion. It was hectic, everyone was screaming,” Varghese said.

“It was just pure terror. People were so terrified of what could possibly have gone wrong.”

Video capture of the incident shows the man standing on the wing before sliding down the emergency slide, only to be met with police as he reached the ground.

The AFP said officers arrested a man for “alleged aggressive behaviour and breaching aircraft safety protocols” and charges were likely to be laid.

The remaining passengers safely disembarked the aircraft but had to wait about 45 minutes for their luggage, as the emergency slide had blocked the cargo door.

Varghese added that Jetstar were "really good" about the luggage delays, and said the cabin crew did a “great job” handling the situation.

"Pure terror": Samuel Johnson recalls infamous Logies moment with Molly Meldrum

Samuel Johnson has opened up on his long-running feud with Molly Meldrum, which began at the 2017 Logies.

Johnson appeared on 2Day FM’s Hughsey, Ed & Erin on Wednesday to reveal the brutal fallout of the infamous moment when Meldrum stormed the state during Johnson's acceptance speech and took over the microphone, giving a rambling and at times explicit speech of his own.

The win, for playing Meldrum in the two-part miniseries about his life titled Molly, came at a time when the actor had become a tireless fundraiser for cancer research after starting the Love Your Sister charity in 2012 with his sister Connie, who had been diagnosed with multiple cancers throughout her life.

However, instead of being able to use his speech to raise awareness for the charity, Meldrum instead stole the actor’s thunder and was left facing a wave of criticism over his bizarre antics.

Speaking on Wednesday, Johnson said that incident was “pure terror” and a night he’s still not forgotten about.

“I told him it was my moment not his! I was looking down at the front table. It was all the people from The Project and they all had their jaws on the floor,” he said. “It was 8 minutes of pure terror.”

Johnson, who previously claimed Meldrum’s antics at the ceremony cost the charity he had planned to plug over $1 million dollars, went to reveal the fallout of the incident, confessing that he’s not seen Meldrum since all the drama went down that infamous evening.

“I don’t hold grudges, I just can’t walk into the future with him,” he continued, suggesting that more has gone down behind the scenes than fans know about.

“There’s a lot that he’s done that I don’t say. But it’s not that I hold a grudge, it’s that I’ve moved on.”

Johnson appeared on the same radio show last year when he spoke about the feud, when Hughesy urged him to let go of his grudge against the Aussie TV legend.

“You said you would never speak to Molly again … I hate grudge holding and that’s bad for you,” Hughes bluntly told Johnson last year.

“I agree with you, I totally agree with you, but when I’ve specifically asked you not do something, and it’s a once in a lifetime moment, a moment I’ll never get back … He has breached my trust in that moment and I’m sorry, I’m not going to do the Molly sequel. I don’t think I should,” Johnson argued.

Image credits: Nine Network / 2Day FM

"Just pure kindness": Richard E Grant's emotional gift after wife's death

Richard E Grant has shared the story of an incredibly thoughtful gift from his neighbour.

The English actor said he was "undone" by his neighbour's gift, which was a heart-warming reminder of his late wife.

Grant, 65, lost his wife, dialect coach Joan Washington, to lung cancer in September 2021.

The actor shared an emotional video about the gift and how much it meant to him while he is continuing to grieve his loss.

“I returned to the Cotswolds today for the weekend and the kind of violence in the silence as you long to hear the person that you can never hear again,” he began, looking visibly emotional.

“What has completely floored me is to find that my incredibly generous neighbour Jules Bowsher has gifted me a comfort blanket, or a lap quilt as she calls it."

“She has hand embroidered it over months, with all of my wife’s favourite poetry."

“All of the names of the actors and coaches she worked with over the decades, films and stage plays that she coached on."

“All the expressions that were common to our 38-year-long marriage.”

The actor continued, “It includes little 3D pockets of happiness with keepsakes and trinkets, all referencing our long marriage.”

“The amount of time she has taken to do this, it’s beyond measure as the kindness of friendship has undone me in the greatest spirit of Christmas as possible,” Grant said.

“How can two little words, ‘Thank you,’ begin to adequately convey the enormity of what she has given me?

“We’re not related. We’re not family or anything like that. Just pure kindness.”

He finished by saying, “Thank you Jules. You’ve made a grown man cry with gratitude.”

Fans flocked to comment on what a kind gift it was, sharing their admiration for the actor's thoughtful neighbour.

“The hours that lovely lady must have spent, but to see how well received it has been, must give her pleasure too,” one follower wrote.

“What a kind lady,” wrote another.

“I have lost my only son, and the kindness of people has blown me away; the world can be a hard place to be sometimes, but kindness truly takes over everything else, for sure.”

This is what happened. These were the circumstances and then we also have the skillset to then ask for help - the appropriate help - but that’s certainly not what I had.”

Ms Tame also shared more details about a “threatening” phone call she received last year asking her to refrain from saying anything negative about Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

She first mentioned the phone call at the National Press Club last month, alleging a senior member of a government-funded organisation was the one who called her.

On Wednesday, she elaborated on the incident and said “it wasn’t an empty threat”.

“I didn’t share this at the National Press Club but do you know what the threat was, from that person who phoned me? It was that they wouldn’t support the [Grace Tame] Foundation if I said something about the Prime Minister,” she said.

Following her Press Club address, Women’s Safety Minister Anne Ruston said the federal government had begun an investigation into Ms Tame’s allegation.

Image: Roy Vandervegt / Adelaide Festival

The pure magic of Cardrona

The first snow of the winter creates a kind of mass lunacy in a community like Wanaka in the deep south of New Zealand’s South Island. At the mere mention of those magical words, ‘snow-to-low-levels’, people’s behaviour changes. They gather in groups (socially-distanced this year) to sniff the air and study the cloud formations, making wise prognostications about how much of the precious white stuff will fall, from which direction, what field will get the most, whether it will suit skis or snowboards best, and how early to hit the slopes — before heading home to tune their gear.

Far away in the North Island, I too sense a change in the air and start to study weather forecasts in great detail, wondering when the first snows will arrive. I look longingly at my ski gear and can't wait to pile on layers of merino wool and down, and head south to the place of my birth.

This year, there’s been the added suspense of not knowing if New Zealand’s ski resorts would actually be able to operate due to the Covid-19 restrictions on social distancing and travel.

But the great news is that now the country is at Alert Level 2, most fields are planning to open, including Cardrona Alpine Resorts which owns Cardrona and Treble Cone near Wanaka. By the time the season gets under way in late June, New Zealand will hopefully be at Alert Level 1 which should make life easier for ski field operators.

There’s a high level of excitement at Cardrona this winter because the resort is due to celebrate its 40th anniversary. I’ve skied there almost every year since 1980 and have witnessed the field grow from a rope-tow and a tin shed to an internationally-renowned alpine resort. It’s my favourite winter playground. Everyone’s treated like a VIP at Cardrona — whether you’re a first-time skier or snowboarder, there on a ski holiday with your family, or training for the Olympics. No matter who you are, you’re welcomed with genuine Kiwi hospitality, like one of the family.

The 40th will be a scaled-down version of the grand event they had planned before Covid-19 threw a giant spanner in the works but the milestone will not slip by unmarked. We’ll definitely be there to help them celebrate. Hopefully our Aussie mates will be able to join us too when our bubbles finally merge.

This is also a landmark season for neighbouring resort Treble Cone which was purchased by Cardrona five months ago. The two fields are vastly different, “yin to each other's yang”, as Cardrona general manager Bridget Legnavsky said when the sale was announced in January this year. Trebles’s terrain is steep and challenging while Cardrona’s wide bowls are gentle and cruisy.

In a few years, Soho Basin, a private field which adjoins Cardrona’s southern boundary, will also be added to the mix, effectively more than doubling the skiable terrain, creating New Zealand’s largest alpine resort. I had a fantastic day’s skiing at Soho last year. When development is complete, a network of lifts will unite the two fields but in the meantime, skiers are transported up the mountain by snowcat.

While I wait for the snow to arrive, I’m tuning my skis and dreaming of my last day at Cardrona in 2019, a pristine blue-bird day after a massive spring dump. The day was pure magic, the stuff of legends.

The mountain had a huge smile on its face — the sun was beaming down from a cloudless sky on slopes sparkling with late-season powder snow that squeaked underfoot. It was a week day outside of any holidays so the queues were non-existent and there was no wind, not even a zephyr, which is unusual for Cardrona. My new Dynastar skis, which just happened to match my jacket, were humming. There’s nothing to equal the euphoria of swishing through powder, silent except for the rhythmic whoosh of your skis floating lightly through weightless snow.

The Eagles’ ‘Take it Easy’ was blasting from the PA system at Captain’s Express and the lifties were dancing while dispensing sunblock to skiers and boarders, in between sneaking off for a run or two.

At Captains Café, a fancy-dress lunch was in full-swing. We sat in the sun drinking ice-cold cider, watching the shenanigans. They sure know how to party at Cardy.

Super-relaxed, we skied better than ever in the afternoon, and kept going until the lifts stopped and there were only a handful of people left on the mountain. Our last run of the season, as always, was Queenstown Return — a scenic glide along the cat-track on Cardrona’s southern boundary, with breath-taking panoramas of row-upon-row of the Southern Alps, the entire Wakatipu Basin . . . and the vast untouched slopes of Soho Basin where we’ll be skiing in a few years’ time.

Born a Southerner, I took lungfuls of pure mountain air and eyefuls of alps to sustain me in the tame, green North Island landscape I now call home.

On the way back to Wanaka, we stopped off at the iconic Cardrona Hotel for glühwein beside the roaring outside fire. Wispy snowflakes began to fall from the darkening sky.

"Snow-to-low-levels," the forecast said.

"Let it snow so hard the airport will be closed for days and we’ll have to stay on," I prayed.

No such luck...

If you go:

Everything you need to know is on the Cardrona website.

Pick up a rental vehicle from JUCY at Queenstown Airport.

Fly Air NZ direct to Queenstown. Rafael Nadal's inspiring words after stunning comeback hailed as pure gold

Rafael Nadal is one step closer to winning his first ATP Finals title after beating Daniil Medvedev in a “one out of 1,000” match.

The Spaniard was on the brink of defeat at 1-5 in the third set when he fought to save a match point and rallied to win over Medvedev 6-7(3) 6-3 7-6(4), furthering his bid to reach the semi-finals.

“Sorry for Daniil. It’s a tough loss. He was playing much better than me in the third set,” Nadal said.

“Today is one of those days that one out of 1,000 where you win, and it happened today.

“I know from my personal experience how tough it is to close out matches, especially when you have two breaks in front and you lose the first one … I think I was a little bit better in the end. In general terms, I think I was playing much better than two days ago, so that’s a very positive thing for me.”

When asked whether his comeback could be an example for young players that “they should fight until the last point”, Nadal rejected the idea.

“Examples are not for one day. Examples are every day,” Nadal said.

“In my opinion, the example is not the comeback.

“Of course you need to be there and you need to keep fighting, but the example, in my opinion, is not break a racquet when you are 5-1 in the third or not be out of your self-control when the things are not going the right way.

“Just staying positive, staying on court, accepting that the opponent is playing a little bit better than you and accepting that you are not that good. That’s the only example, no? Because sometimes the frustration comes when you believe and you consider yourself too good and you don’t accept the mistakes that you are doing.”

no matter how many times Nadal says stuff like this, it will never cease to be important pic.twitter.com/dm9oQNNxj2
— Ricky Dimon (@Dimonator) November 13, 2019

Nadal’s win means Novak Djokovic has to win the title to have any chance of overtaking the 33-year-old as the world’s number one player.

Nadal is set to face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday.

"Pure chaos" at Coles: Shoppers cause a frenzy over latest craze

Coles customers have come out in full force as they descended on shopfronts around the nation on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday marked the first day of the Coles Little Shop 2 promotion after a very successful debut last year.

A worker at Coles Wynard in Sydney's CBD shared with 7News.com.au about the “pure chaos” that started as soon as they opened their doors.

"We went through 10 cages (640 boxes) in less than half an hour," they shared, adding that workers had been overwhelmed at the response.

Customers justified the chaos through a simple message.

"They sold out too fast last year."

Others said that they weren’t into the hype but were getting them for others.

"I didn't do it last year, but people at work went nuts for them so I promised I'd get some for them," customer Tanya told 7News.com.au.

At the time of speaking, she had three cases, miniature shopping trolleys and a mini shopping basket in her arms.

Coles acknowledged the ruckus and said that the bosses didn’t expect the toys to sell so fast.

“We have lots of collector cases available and our team members are working hard to keep stock on the shelves,” the spokesman said.

“Some of our new items, including Coles trucks and registers, are selling more quickly than anticipated and we have extra stock on the way from our warehouses to stores.”

However, some were quick to call out the hypocrisy of the launch.

“The hypocrisy of Coles is outrageous,” Paul Hellier, who made a documentary about plastic waste, said to The Daily Mail.

“It started off Plastic Free July by boasting it had diverted 1.7 billion single-use plastic bags from landfill over the past 12 months, with its data claiming seven in 10 of its consumers now remember to bring a reusable bag when they shop.”

Hellier added, "This madness will only stop if we send Coles and the associated brands a message that will hurt them most – at the cash register. That's why we are calling for a boycott to all the items involved in the promotion.”

Coles said in a statement that the Little Shop collectables aren’t discarded quickly by customers.

“Rather than throwing them out, our customer research shows that of the customers who collected minis last year, 94 per cent have either kept them or given them to family or friends who were collecting,” a spokesperson from Coles said to The Daily Mail.

Cruise descends into "pure chaos" as ship loses its balance

It was supposed to be a relaxing five-day cruise trip to the Caribbean, but instead, passengers were faced with their worst nightmare after a malfunctioning switchboard forced the ship to tilt to its side.

The Carnival Sunshine cruise liner left Port Carnaveral on Sunday, October 28, and it didn’t take long for problems to start arising as the unbalanced cruise ship caused chaos with passengers flying out of their seats and plates and glasses falling to the ground in pieces.

Those on board compared the incident to the Titanic, with one person claiming that water was seeping into the ship during dinnertime.

“We were actually at the table where the window broke and the water came in,” said a passenger to Orlando news station WFTV.

“Next thing we know, the whole boat tilted … we were literally hanging on for our lives, dangling … it was really like a scene from the Titanic.”

David Crews, a passenger on board the doomed ship, said he didn’t think the back and forth rocking of the ship was a problem until he saw others crying and screaming for help.

This is the inside of the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship on Sunday evening. @CarnivalCruise says the ship listed (tilted or leaned) because of a technical issue just hours after leaving @PortCanaveral.

(H/t to David Crews for the pictures) pic.twitter.com/usSaQsZBzG
— Clay LePard (@ClayLePard) 31 October 2018

“Plates and silverware started sliding off the tables. Then the tables themselves started to slide. Glasses and plates started to fall and shatter. At this point, it was pure chaos. Screams. Cries. Panic.”

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, a spokesperson claims that everything was under control after a minute into the chaos.

“There was never any issue with the safe operation of the ship and our officers quickly intervened to correct the situation,” said the spokesperson, as they also admitted to some passengers walking away with minor injuries.

The day after the incident took place, the captain issued a note to each guest to explain what went wrong.

“We have identified that an electrical switchboard malfunction impacted the use of the fin stabilisers,” it said.

“It’s important to note that fin stabilisers are not a safety feature; they are deployed solely for guest comfort to minimise any potential ship motion while at sea. There was never any issue with the safe operation of the ship, and our officers quickly intervened to correct the situation.”

Although the cruise line offered compensation of $50 to each guest, many were not impressed and chose to end their journey after the terrifying event.

Commonwealth Games’ unseen moment: Aussie athletes’ act of pure class

Overnight wholegrain oats with date and fig puree

Recently, my lovely sister invited me for a weekend hike – with a very early start.

I was picked up at 7am, and driven to beautiful Piha and the Waitakere Ranges. The morning was clear, a little windy and icy cold – perfect for an energetic adventure – but first we needed sustenance.

As if by magic, bowls and thermoses loaded with overnight porridge appeared, complete with a sprinkling of nuts, and a mug of tea on the side. This delicious breakfast sustained us for the next two hours (more I would say!), and was the inspiration for this nourishing breakfast dish.

Because the oats are soaked overnight, they are quick to cook and already sweetened a little with the inclusion of dates. Topped with the date and fig puree, some honey toasted nuts and a good dollop of Greek yoghurt – the result is delicious and hearty.

Serves: 2-4

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups wholegrain jumbo rolled oats

2 ½ tablespoons chia seeds

3 cups whole milk, plus 1 cup extra (or use almond or rice milk)

½ cup roughly chopped dates

½ cup walnuts

½ cup pistachios

½ cup whole almonds

2 teaspoons honey

1 cup Greek yoghurt

Date and fig puree

6 dried figs, stems removed, roughly chopped

10 dates, halved and stones removed

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Finely grated zest of half a lemon

1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Method:

Put oats, 2 tablespoons of the chia seeds, 3 cups of the milk, and the dates in a sealed container in the fridge overnight.

Dry fry walnuts, pistachios, and almonds in a large frying pan, over a medium heat, for 2-3 minutes. Add honey and cook for a further 3-4 minutes until lightly toasted and glazed with honey. Stir occasionally so that the nuts don't catch and burn. Although toasted, the nuts remain a little sticky, so store in an even layer until ready to spoon over porridge.

To cook porridge, bring the oat mixture to a gentle boil, reduce the heat to a simmer, and cook, stirring for 8-10 minutes until thickened. Add extra milk to achieve your desired consistency. Remove from the heat and serve immediately with a dollop of date and fig puree, a spoonful or two of yoghurt, and a sprinkling of nuts.

For garnish, sprinkle with the extra chia seeds if desired. I find porridge serving sizes vary wildly – and while this would happily serve four of me, I know some men would demolish half of it, so use your judgement with regard to servings!

For the date and fig puree

Put all of the ingredients in a small pot with ¾ cup water and bring to a gentle boil.

Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before mashing to a paste with a fork – or, for a smoother consistency, blend in a small food processor. For a thinner consistency simply add ¼ cup more water. Cool and store in a covered container in the fridge until ready to use.

What’s your favourite way to serve oats? Place the lamb in an oven dish.

Place the preserved lemon rind, Verjuice (or white wine), olive oil, chopped rosemary, salt and pepper and blend to a paste. Rub onto the surface of the lamb shoulder, place into an oven bag and leave to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours.

Place into the oven and cook at 110C for 10 hours until tender and falling off the bone. Remove from the oven and leave to rest for about 20 minutes.

For the parsnips, bring a large pot of salted water to the boil, add the parsnips and cook until just cooked.

Strain and allow to cool slightly, rub off the skins.

Cut the parsnip in half and place the small ends directly on a roasting tray, ½ the fat ends of the parsnips.

Once the lamb is removed from the oven, increase temperature 220C.

Melt the butter and pour over the parsnips, season. Place into the oven and cook for approximately 30 minutes or until golden.

For the kale & cabbage, bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Remove the leaves from the cabbage and cut out the thick vein, blanch in the water and refresh. Repeat the process with the kale.

Drain the leaves and roll up, place onto your chopping board and finely cut, mix together.

Place in a microwave suitable container, add a knob of butter, cracked pepper and salt if needed and reheat in the microwave when ready to serve.

Remove the parsnips from the oven. We are also serving a parsnip puree - to do so, place the roasted parsnips into a blender with a splash of milk and blend until the correct consistency is achieved.

Remove the lamb from the bag, pass the juices and skim off excess fat. Warm the juices and adjust seasoning accordingly.

Pull off lovely portions of tender lamb and place on the right hand side of the plate. On the top left place a dollop of the parsnip puree and top with 2-3 pieces of roasted parsnip. On the bottom left hand side of the plate place a pile of the kale and cabbage, and finish with a spoon of the roasting juices over the lamb meat.

Have you got a different way to serve lamb shoulder to share with us? Photos show the pure joy of adoption after foster care

Children living in foster care can feel like their future is less than clear. But that uncertainty disappears the day they are adopted by their "forever family".

A series of heartwarming images shared by US foster care group Together We Rise show the joy of adoption.

The pictures, which feature on the organisation's Instagram page, show children of all ages holding signs recording the number of days they spent in foster care until they found their forever family.

"With so much negative news surrounding foster care we just want highlight the positive with amazing adoptions that are happening every day," TWR executive director Gianna Dahlia told The Huffington Post.

"There are many negative stereotypes surrounding kids in foster care, but they are just children who want loving families and there are families out there fighting for them," she added.

"We just want to inspire those families either going through the process or considering the adoption process that it can be done and it is worth it."

One image shows a family of five children who were all adopted together after almost two years in foster care.
