"Leave it to the judges!": Dancing With The Stars fans rage against double elimination

Dancing With The Stars fans have unleashed on the show after two fan favourite contestants were sent home in one dramatic episode.

Just weeks ahead of the semi-finals, Nova Peris and Julie Goodwin were sent home, but fans are disappointed to see Julie go after her improvement over the weeks on the show.

Julie impressed the judges with her Foxtrot, scoring 27 points for the dance, while Nova scored just 19 points.

There was no final dance-off at the end of the episode, so both contestants were sent home.

While they were two of the lowest-scoring dances of the night, Ben Cousins was also at the bottom of the leaderboard with 21 points for his Viennese Waltz.

Fans of the show were quick to flock to social media to complain about the double elimination, stating Ben should have gone home instead of Julie.

"Why do they keep saving Ben, seriously?" one person asked. "Ben Cousins shouldn’t have been on in the first place. Why is he still there???" another questioned.

"PLEASE..... STOP the audience voting!!!! Leave it to the judges!!!" another fan said, with people agreeing. "100% agree! People keep voting for footy players and well-known actors. Should be mostly about their dancing ability," someone else commented.

"One thing is for sure... it won't be determined by how good or bad the dancers are. It's just a popularity contest when it comes to the vote," someone else complained.

"It is so wrong getting the audience to vote. All the dancers have family there," another person pointed out.

"Julie should have stayed," another fan said. "I am so sad to see you go, you should not have gone. You were simply amazing!" another fan wrote, tagging Julie in the comments.

Castor oil is all the rage among health influencers – what you need to know about this alternative remedy

Veronique Seidel, University of Strathclyde

Castor oil, which was once used by fascists in Italy as punishment because of its quick-acting laxative effect, is now a weight-loss trend on TikTok. Not drinking it, but rubbing it on your belly.

Influencers are also pouring it in their belly buttons and wrapping towels soaked in it around their midriff. They claim it can melt belly fat and help with bloating.

Castor oil – made from the beans of the castor plant – is an ancient medicine. References to it appear in an ancient Egyptian medical text called the Ebers Papyrus (1550BC). It was used as a laxative and to treat various skin conditions. Cleopatra is said to have used it in her hair and to brighten the whites of her eyes.

The odourless oil is rich in a fatty substance called ricinoleic acid that strongly stimulates bowel movements. Today, it is an approved over-the-counter remedy in some countries for short-term constipation and is used for cleansing the bowel before medical examinations. However, there’s not much scientific evidence to indicate that this laxative effect is better than other commonly used laxatives, such as senna – which has also been used for centuries.

Other reported traditional uses for the oil include as a cure for sore and itchy eyes, to relieve joint and period pain, and as a means to induce labour. But, again, the evidence for these things is scant.

Castor oil isn’t just imbibed, it is also widely used in skin creams, hair conditioners and other cosmetic products, such as lipsticks. It is used to moisturise, soothe irritated skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Its moisturising properties have been attributed to ricinoleic acid.

As part of haircare products, it is said to help with hair loss and dandruff.

But taking castor oil as a standalone product is not risk free. The main side-effects of imbibing the oil are abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloating and dizziness.

Vulnerable people, such as the elderly, babies, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with liver or kidney failure should avoid taking castor oil. As should anyone with inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis or gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation.

The side-effects of castor oil can also be exacerbated in people with eating disorders who may choose to use the oil to lose weight by speeding up the passage of food through the gut.

However, if you want to apply the oil to your skin or scalp, proceed with caution. In some people, it can trigger an allergic reaction.

It is always advised to apply a small amount of pure castor oil or a castor oil-containing cosmetic product onto a small patch of skin. If there is no allergic reaction after 24 hours, then it can be assumed that the product can be applied safely to a larger area of the body.

Ultimately, though, there are generally safer and better remedies out there. And rubbing it on your belly – sadly – won’t melt the fat.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Influencer's windscreen smashed in wild road rage act

Video footage has captured the scary moment a New Zealand influencer's windscreen got smashed in a wild road rage incident.

Social media influencer Chantelle Baker claimed that the blue Mazda Demio had cut off another car behind her and began tailgating her when she was driving 40km/hr as she was carefully navigating a near-crash.

“They started to scream at me from their car, trying to indicate [and] use their hands to tell me to pull over so they could go past,” she said in a video posted to Instagram.

“I obviously didn’t. We go a few hundred metres and they decide to throw a rock at my car with my eight-month-old baby asleep in the back seat.”

Baker said she saw them down a side road a couple of minutes later and followed their car to get the licence plate.

She then recalled them pulling into an area near an old petrol station in Rangiora, Waimakariri, where the footage was filmed.

In the viral clip, which has racked up over seven million views on TikTok, the two women can be seen exiting the Mazda and sprinting towards Baker's car.

One of them ran up the bonnet and on to the windscreen causing it to shatter.

The same woman then goes to the driver's door and tells Baker to "f*** off".

Baker then reverses and drives away.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Chantelle Baker (@chantellebakernz)

New Zealand Police have said that they were aware of the incident and are in the initial stages of investigation.

“Police received reports of an incident in the King Street area around 1pm on Saturday where one driver apparently followed another driver after a car failed to merge correctly,” they told news.com.au.

“The cars have stopped at a petrol station where a person has reportedly got out and jumped on the other person’s vehicle, breaking a window. L-plater attacked with traffic cone reveals what sparked road rage outburst

A Perth teenager was behind the wheel for the first time, when the "classy" passenger of a BMW behind erupted with rage.

The woman attacked the L-plater behind the wheel in a bizarre outburst, yelling out expletives and hurling a traffic cone in their direction.

The L-plater behind the wheel, Aleyna Helvaci, 16, was accompanied by a professional driving instructor when the ugly incident occurred after she accidentally stalled at a busy intersection.

“She was just full out wild, I turned (the car) back on, put my foot on the clutch, and everything was ready," Helvaci told 7 NEWS.

“I was going to take off, but before I could there was a really loud horn.”

Footage of the interaction went viral after the teen's mum posted the outburst on TikTok.

“F*** you” the woman screamed as she stormed down the road in front of standstill traffic before pretending to chuck her handbag in the car's direction.

She then reaches for a nearby traffic cone and hurls it at the car.

“F***ing sl**, move on up!” she screamed before storming back to her own car - its horn still blaring at the teen.

At one point, the equally enraged male driver held the horn down for nine seconds straight, as the person calmly filming the incident is told to note down the plate number.

The woman eventually sits back down in her car, but doesn't stop screaming expletives at the teen.

When they finally merged right to flee the scene, the driver got in on the action himself, honking his horn and flipping his middle finger at the teen.

The video racked up thousands of views on TikTok before it was removed, a number of people have slammed the SUV owner's “disgusting behaviour”, adding that “we were all learners at one stage”.

“Absolutely disgusting behaviour. I am so sick of this sh*t. Control your anger and grow up!” one commented.

“This is so bad! It’s always the ones with the rich cars too hey … Y’all so 'classy,'" wrote another.

Helvaci's family has since filed a police report and the teen told 7News that it would take some time before she felt safe behind the wheels again.

“It is all about building confidence in the end, so this is all part of the experience,” she said.

Images: TikTok

"Totally absurd": Ben Fordham rages over Shakespeare content warning

Hold on to your quills, folks, because we've got ourselves a Shakespearean drama fit for the 21st century! It appears that the Bard's timeless works are now under fire at an international university, and our dear radio host, Ben Fordham, is not amused.

The talk radio host is taking on an English degree's "content warning" that has been applied to none other than William Shakespeare. That's right: The great bard of yore now comes with a caution label.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has allowed students studying "Error and Sweet Violence: Shakespeare and Renaissance Comedy and Tragedy" to exit stage left – much like Shakespearean characters fleeing their woes – if the content ever gets too spicy or confrontational.

Any student, at any time, is permitted “to leave the class, interrupt their activity or take any measure necessary to take care of their wellbeing without the need for explanation or justification”.

And what content in particular are they worried about? The saucy romantic comedy "Twelfth Night", featuring a cross-dressing heroine and more mistaken identities than a masked ball gone wrong. Othello, Measure For Measure, and Coriolanus also make the list of potential "trigger warnings".

Fordham couldn't resist taking to the airwaves to voice his disbelief. "So Shakespeare is now the subject of a trigger warning," he proclaimed with a clear mix of humour and disbelief. “You can just walk out of class, because university bosses are worried that some snowflakes may find the material too much. Once upon a time universities challenged students and now they wrap them in cotton wool.”

In the land of Twelfth Night, Viola dons a disguise to woo the Duke Orsino, but alas, love plays its twisted game, and Olivia falls for the cross-dressing charmer instead. How scandalous! It's like the plot of a Hollywood rom-com but with more ruffles and poetic monologues.

“The play features a cross-dressing heroine and in 2023 you would think that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow,” continued Fordham. “But someone wants to protect the students from Shakespeare. Can you believe it?”

Also joining the fray was English actress Felicity Kendal, who described the warning as “totally absurd”.

“Great art is meant to challenge our senses, our feelings and our prejudices," Kendal said in an interview with the Daily Mail. "We should not be deterring students from engaging with these works."

Images: Nine Network / Wikimedia Commons

"Too busy marching": Debate rages over fiery Anzac Day post

A man has shared a controversial claim on Twitter about Australia’s relationship to Anzac Day, sparking a fiery debate.

Australians and New Zealanders gathered to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the landing of Anzac troops at Gallipoli in World War I on April 25th. Services were held all over both countries to mark the day of remembrance.

On May 34th, Brad Turner, who says he is a former Navy submariner and AFP officer, took to Twitter to argue that the values of the annual celebration were “no longer reflected” by Australia.

He notably called out Australia’s confrontation with China on behalf of the US.

Australia is a society that dutifully gets up early every April 25 to gather, Mach & remember our Dead. That same society that holds paramount ideals of egalitarianism, mateship and sacrifice is forgotten on the other 364 days of the year.

“On those days Australia marches right past veteran suicides, war crimes, illegal wars and widespread inequality and corruption. Is it really a day of remembrance? Or is it theatrics so society can pretend they care about victims of war or our conduct as a country with an aim to feel better about apathy and inaction as a nation towards these things.

“We don’t notice any of these things because we are too busy marching. But this time it’s headlong into another pointless American war with China. The things we celebrate about our nation on Anzac Day are sadly no longer reflected in Australia’s actions. They have not been in some time.”

Several people online took the same stance as Mr Turner.

“I don’t like Anzac Day. It overlooks our follies in joining Britain and US wars. WWII was noble. The rest were con jobs to enrich the industrialists. Our people have all these solemn events only to assuage their ‘je ne c’est quoi’ because they don’t feel any guilt but should,” one wrote.

“Our politicians spend more on memorial monuments and museums that they can put their name on a plaque on the wall than they do for the actual veterans who are suffering from PTSD or other ‘souvenirs’ they have brought back from their tours,” another said.

“Flag waving patriotism has taken over Anzac Day. We are one step away from parades of military hardware while the populace salute. What should be a reflection on the horrors of war has become it‘s celebration. John Howard did this,” a third added.

“Listening to the Labor government yesterday follow in the footsteps of the Coalition, justifying spending billions antagonising China at America’s request is not the ‘lest we forget’ I think about,” a fourth wrote.

Others fired back and said Anzac Day was still important.

“Mate … it’s about remembering the sacrifice and loss of our mates … lest we forget,” one wrote, adding, “I don’t worry about [politicians] anymore grandstanding on the day. It’s our day not theirs to remember our mates.”

Another wrote, “It is tradition. It separates the fluff of ordinary living to reflect on sacrifice not only of the dead, of lives unlived, of the unfathomable grief but also of the living dealing with the trauma and moral injury of tooth and claw war. It is not a celebration which distracts.”

“I understand this perspective, but at the same time I ask myself — is there any harm in this form national reflection? I agree there have been some military follies following the absolute necessity of WWII, but would add that there is no guarantee that the next engagement is such,” a third wrote.

Shootings, killings neighbours …”

It is not immediately clear why the woman is so upset, but the man filming reveals the workers had cut electricity to her home.

“Boys ripped off the wire,” the man says, panning the camera up towards the powerlines.

“You cut the power,” the elderly man tells the tradies, as his partner continues to scream at the tradies.

One of the workers assured the couple they were going to run a powerline for them immediately , this response prompts the woman to grab more handfuls of dirt and throw it at the man speaking.

“Hey!” the person filming yelled out to the woman, before someone is heard saying “excuse me” in a high-pitched voice.

The woman, still very angry, turns towards the camera, picks up a piece of debris from the dirt and pulls it up over her head ready to throw it at the person filming.

The cameraman immediately hides behind a door, saying: “She is throwing bricks at me. Look”.

The woman drops whatever is in her hand and makes a rude gesture towards the camera before walking away.

“Why you don’t f***ing tell us you cut the power, eh?” the older man asks the workers.

“Not you, not him, not him,” he adds, pointing at all the tradesmen standing around the neighbour’s property.

One of the workers then tells the couple to “speak to Ausgrid”.

The footage has gained over 1800 comments, with social media users unable to agree on who is in the wrong, the elderly couple or the tradies.

Some believe the couple’s actions were justified in their anger at having power cut to their home seemingly without warning.

“Well if you cut their power without notice than I get why she’s upset,” one person said, with another claiming they would be “raging 10 x more than her”.

“Cowboys like this do what ever they want without consideration to neighbours. Happens all the time. Bet no notice or communication,” another person claimed.

Another added: “Those poor people have clearly been traumatised by that house being built next door and have finally snapped!!!”

There were other commenters who agreed that the workers needed to tell the couple if there was a possibility their power could be cut, but thought the woman was “overreacting” to the situation.

“Angry that power was cut off … yes! But throwing a tantrum and throwing debris at people is really uncalled for. Wasn’t intentional,” another commenter said.

You can watch the infamous TikTok here.

Prince Charles, Duran Duran and a giant bull: All the highlights of the Comm Games Opening Ceremony

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are officially underway, after the impressive opening ceremony kicked off on Thursday evening.

The extravagant ceremony captivated the attention of local and international fans, with TV viewers around the word tuning in to the Birmingham event.

Prince Charles arrived at the Alexander Stadium in style, driving the same Aston Martin the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge famously left Buckingham Palace in on their wedding day.

The Prince of Wales drove his luxury, vintage car out onto the arena before a display where several motor vehicles combined to form a perfect Union Jack on the arena surface.

The ceremony celebrated aspects of the rich history and culture of Birmingham, with a 10 metre tall mechanical "Raging Bull" being waltzed into the stadium.

The Bull Ring is a major shopping district in the city, which also features a sculpture of a bull, while the mascot for these Commonwealth Games is Perry the Bull.

Female chain makers dragged the bull into the stadium, representing the chains used during the slave trade.

The bull then broke free of those chains — symbolising the abolition of the slave trade and the 1910 wage strike that paved the way for women to break free from poverty.

Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai addressed the audience early in the ceremony, sharing a heartfelt message about how Birmingham became her home and welcomed her family.

Musical act Duran Duran, who began their career in Birmingham, closed the ceremony as they belted out fan favourite tracks such as Save A Prayer, Planet Earth and Ordinary World.

The Commonwealth Games will run until August 8th, with 72 countries competing in 19 sports over the 11-day event.

Should you HAVE to pay for your daughter’s wedding? The debate rages on

A retired mother has been left confused on whether or not she should help pay for her daughter’s wedding.

She took to Mumsnet to explain that her daughter, who is in her 30s is planning her wedding to her boyfriend of 10 years.

The mother explained that she and her husband have retired and don't have a stream of income to help as much as they possibly would have loved.

“My husband and I are both retired so no more money is coming in. We do still go on holidays, but don't have anything like as much money as we used to have,” she wrote.

“We happily paid for private education and private healthcare and plenty more for all our children and were happy to do so but am I being unreasonable to think that by now we've done our bit and our daughter should pay for her own wedding?”

Several people responded to the woman’s thread saying she wasn’t being unreasonable to not pay for her daughter’s wedding.

“No you’re not being unreasonable at all. I got married a few years ago and wouldn’t ever have expected my family to put money towards it, I chose to get married so I should pay. Don’t see how she can view it any differently,” one woman wrote.

“My dad did pay for my dress as a token but I would never have expected it and we made sure we saved and budgeted appropriately.”

“I got married at 28, wouldn’t have dreamed of asking for a penny, let alone expecting it!” another commented.

“I don't plan on paying for weddings, I think it feels quite old-fashioned to do that. I would offer to give a donation, but the couple choose how big/small they want their celebration to be, so they should pay for that themselves,” someone else wrote.

“Have you been parents of the bride or groom before? If yes, did you contribute to that? If not then now is the precedence to set. Instead of paying for the wedding can you offer a contribution or pay for one,” one explained.

“Of course they should pay for their own wedding! Is your daughter expecting you to pay? If so, she's being utterly unreasonable,” someone else wrote.

Image: Shutterstock

COVID queue jumper met with road rage response

A frustrated man in Cairns has confronted a daring queue jumper at a busy drive-through COVID-19 testing centre.

On the first day of lockdown for the city in the north of Queensland, tensions were high as many lined up in a queue stretching for kilometres to get tested for coronavirus.

The argument kicked off when one driver pulled into an empty stretch of road in front of several vehicles who had been waiting for their turn to get tested.

A man witnessed the car jump the queue, and waved down a cameraman for 9News who was filming the area to expose the audacious driver.

When the driver refused to leave their spot in the queue, the man made aggressive hand gestures at the car's driver and stood in front of its bonnet.

The car then rolled forward, forcing the man to slide up onto the bonnet and sit there defiantly.

"Mate it was pretty full-on wasn't it, ay," witness Jan Bradley told 9News.

Residents have said that sights like these are becoming more common, as COVID-19 cases grow in the region causing long lines and wait times at both testing and vaccination clinics.

One local said, "People's tempers getting frayed sitting here, but I mean you've gotta do it."

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Hodgman has urged locals to re-assess their behaviour during the three-day lockdown, as police have called for patience and calm during the difficult time.

The spread of coronavirus has forced Victorians into an extreme lockdown but the only thing Sam Newman wants to know is why he can’t play golf.

The former host of the Footy Show has been vocal over the past few months as he criticised Premier Dan Andrews for preventing people from hitting the fairways as the pandemic brought life to a grinding halt.

That changed as restrictions started loosening once Australia looked to be beating the virus, but after an alarming increase in Victorian cases, a state of disaster has been declared - and unfortunately for Newman, he’s had to put his clubs back in the bag.

Greater Melbourne has been forced to implement a nightly curfew from 8 pm to 5 am but Newman is more concerned about why golf courses have ben forced to close.

“Open: bottle shops and liquor stores. Shut: golf courses,” Newman tweeted.

“Dilemma — sit a home and get s**t-faced OR step into the wide open spaces, well away from others, exercising as you do, by playing GOLF. And the lunacy goes on.”

After someone on social media responded, saying there are much bigger concerns right now - such as the effect of Victoria’s lockdown on unemployment rates - Newman still believed his complaint was valid.

“The 100,000 out of work may want to play GOLF — seeing as they’re out of work,” Newman wrote.

In April, Newman marched on Victoria’s Parliament House in Melbourne to demand the state’s golf courses be re-opened immediately.

But Andrews responded by saying, “no round of golf is worth someone’s life” as Newman repeatedly attacked the Premier’s leadership.
