"You made me enjoy the game": Federer's emotional retirement letter to Nadal

Roger Federer has penned an emotional tribute to Rafael Nadal ahead of his retirement, reflecting on their stellar careers together.

Nadal’s career officially came to an end when Spain was defeated 2-1 by the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarter-final in Malaga on Wednesday morning, with Nadal in tears as he stepped onto the court for the final time.

Thousands of tributes poured in for Nadal as his retirement officially began, but Federer's tribute quickly went viral for his emotional words.

“As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional,” Federer said.

“Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me - a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground."

“You made me reimagine my game - even going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge. I’m not a very superstitious person, but you took it to the next level. Your whole process. All those rituals."

“Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear … All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing. Because it was so unique - it was so you."

“And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more. OK, maybe not at first. After the 2004 Australian Open, I achieved the No. 1 ranking for the first time. I thought I was on top of the world. And I was - until two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly."

"All that buzz I’d been hearing about you - about this amazing young player from Mallorca, a generational talent, probably going to win a major someday - it wasn’t just hype."

“We were both at the start of our journey and it’s one we ended up taking together. Twenty years later, Rafa, I have to say: What an incredible run you’ve had. Including 14 French Opens - historic! You made Spain proud … you made the whole tennis world proud."

“And then there was London – the Laver Cup in 2022. My final match. It meant everything to me that you were there by my side – not as my rival but as my doubles partner."

“Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career.”

Federer signed off the 585-word tribute from “your fan Roger”.

Wimbledon champion calls out commentator's "disappointing" remarks

Wimbledon tennis champion Barbora Krejcikova has called out a commentator for making "unprofessional" remarks about her live on-air.

The Czech player was taking part in the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia, which was broadcast on the Tennis Channel, when the comments were made by commentator Jon Wertheim.

The 28-year-old player took to X to express her disappointment over the comments, writing, “As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary."

"This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media."

“These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field."

"I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honours the commitment we make to compete at this level.”

Wertheim responded to Krejcikova's posts, apologising for his comments and also explaining what happened.

"During a Tennis Channel studio show on Friday, I made some deeply regrettable comments off-air," he said.

"I acknowledge them. I apologise for them. I reached out immediately and apologised to the player.

"What happened? I joined the show by Zoom. In rehearsal we were shown a graphic of a player who had just competed. It showed her at an angle that exaggerated her forehead."

"A few moments later, I was told to frame up my Zoom. I looked at the low camera angle and joked that it made my forehead resemble the photo of the player in question."

"Someone in the control room chimed in and I bantered back. Though this was a private rehearsal, this exchange inadvertently and without context made it to live air."

"I realise I am not the victim here. It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry."

Jelena Dokic's teary admission about 2001 Australian Open controversy

Jelena Dokic has shared that she would endure "100 years of abuse" to go back in time and represent Australia at the 2001 Australian Open.

During an emotional interview with Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little, the tennis champion recalled the earlier years of her career, and the abuse she faced at the hands of her father, who was also her coach.

At 17 years old, Jelena was booed off Rod Laver Arena at the 2001 Australian Open after losing to Lindsay Davenport, after she announced plans to turn her back on Australia and represent her native Yugoslavia instead.

The decision not to represent Australia was made by her father, and at that point in her career, he had been banned from attending her matches.

“I would take 100 years of abuse if I could take back not playing for Australia for a few years,” an emotional Dokic told the Carrie & Tommy Show.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carrie and Tommy (@carrietommyshow)

“He took away from me, something that I loved so much."

“He took that away from me in that moment. "One more shot": Nick Kyrgios makes major career announcement

After two years of dealing with an injury, Nick Kyrgios has made a major announcement about his career future.

The 29-year-old Aussie tennis champion has confirmed he will be returning to the court for Australian Open in 2025, after not playing any professional tennis for 492 days.

His last match dates all the way back to June 13th in 2023, which he lost against China’s Yibing Wu before he took a step back from the court to deal with serious knee and wrist injuries.

While many fans have speculated whether he would ever return to the sport, Kyrgios made the announcement himself while speaking at South by South West (SXSW) in Sydney on Thursday.

“The injury I had was brutal,” he said as a keynote speaker on stage.

“The surgeon said I probably wouldn’t be able to play again. But I said whatever, just try and get me another 2-3 years of my career."

“Everything has gone semi-well and I will be playing the Australia Open this summer.”

While on his hiatus from playing, Kyrios has dabbled in the world of commentating, but he admitted it has been tough to sit on the sidelines for so long.

“It’s been a brutal last couple of years ... but just being out there to play in front of a home crowd ... I just want to be out there, lighting up the crowd and playing in front of my own country,” Kyrios added.

“Whether it is good or bad, it will certainly be a lot of fun, for sure. I am looking forward to it.

“My only motivation to come back and play is to try and win a grand slam, and I’ll give it one more shot.”

Your legacy will live forever."

“Only you know what you had to endure to become an icon of tennis and sport in general. Thank you for pushing me to the limit so many times in our rivalry.”

Sam Mac's surprising career move after becoming a father of two

Sam Mac has announced a surprising career move after becoming a father of two.

The Sunrise weatherman has released a heartwarming children's picture book titled Suddenly One, inspired by his now two-year-old daughter Margot.

Mac explained on The Morning Show on Tuesday that when Margot turned one, he was inspired by her milestone birthday to write some touching words about his firstborn.

“When Margot turned one, you want to celebrate that and all those little moments that happen in that first year so, I just jotted down some thoughts,” Mac explained to Larry Edmur and Kylie Gillies.

“(I was on a) long flight to Perth … (and) I thought, ‘Oh, maybe this could be a poem’. So, a few days later I refined it and posted it with some video to match the words and it had over a million views overnight."

“It really took me by surprise, and (publishing house) Penguin got in touch and said, ‘We think that this is a universal experience. Everyone gets excited about their little ones and those first milestones. Let’s turn it into a picture book’."

“So, over the past year, we’ve been in the process of picking the illustrator, the wonderful Deb Hudson, and refining the text.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Mac (@sammacinsta)

Mac said he hopes the book helped families connect, saying, “(I think it’s) for parents and grandparents to sit down and read it with their little ones.”

“I hope what comes from the book is a great connection point for families. In a way it was a love letter to Margot. I needed her to know the magic she’d brought to our lives. Even if it would be a few years before she could fully understand it," he said.

"This project has been almost a year in the making & it has already brought me immense joy. Ian Thorpe opens up on darkest moment of his career

Ian Thorpe has recalled the moment an irregular drug test almost upended his life and destroyed his reputation.

The Aussie swimming legend opened up about a few key moments in his personal life that coincided with the height of his swimming career in a tell-all new book.

The 41-year-old athlete singled out the drug test chapter as one of the darkest moments of his career in a new book Profiles In Hope, written by former NSW Liberal leader John Brogden.

In 2006, Thorpe underwent a routine drug test that returned an irregular result, with French newspaper L’Equipe reporting that he had returned an unusual level of testosterone.

However, results also showed a hormone called leutenising hormone, another naturally occurring substance.

The news of the test gained international attraction, and resulted in Thorpe launching a lawsuit against the newspaper.

“An irregular test isn’t uncommon. They happen. So firstly, no one should know that information to begin with,” Thorpe says in the book, according to the Daily Mail.

“An irregular test means nothing. An irregular test gets thrown out."

He said at the time the speculation that he was a cheat was “so upsetting” and the way the information was leaked to French journalist made him feel “deeply alarmed”.

He also admitted that during the media storm around the testing, he did not want to leave his home and says now he had thoughts about taking his own life and staging it as an accident.

The “Thorpedo” now has the tools in place for his mental health to look back and think he could have handled it better.

“In that kind of state, you’re entirely irrational, your logic is warped,” he tells Brogden.

“It’s only in the periods when you have clarity of mind, when your mental health is good, that you can actually reflect on things and say, ‘Well, I could have done this’.

“I realised what I was doing wasn’t working, and that I needed help. So I got that help, and even though I was still in a long-term depressive state, I got better. I wasn’t at the point of suicide.”

Need to talk to someone? Don't go it alone. The tragic reason Miriam Margolyes is still working at 83

Miriam Margolyes has shared the tragic reason that she is still working in showbiz at the age of 83.

The acting legend has long suffered with spinal stenosis – a condition that occurs when the spinal canal or neural foramen narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Despite suffering from the debilitating illness, the 83-year-old British star has appeared on numerous TV shows over the years.

Now, speaking candidly to the Radio Times, Margolyes admitted that she is still working to fund her medical bills.

She said, “I’m worried that I won’t have enough money for carers when I finally get paralysed or whatever it is that’s going to happen to me.”

Despite dealing with the physical constraints that come from both her spinal stenosis and her age, which she finds “limiting and depressing”, she said she refuses to slow her pace.

“When you know that you haven’t got long to live and I’m probably going to die within the next five or six years, if not before, I’m loath to leave behind performing. It’s such a joy.”

“I yearn to play roles that don’t confine me to wheelchairs, but I’m just not strong enough.”

Margolyes recently underwent major heart surgery, speaking candidly about the operation with the Table Manners podcast.

“I’ve got a cow’s heart now,” she said.

“Well, not the whole heart. I’ve had an aortic valve replaced by a cow’s aortic valve.

“I don’t know how common it is. I’d never heard of that operation. But it saves you from having open-heart surgery, which would be infinitely more invasive.”

In the same interview, Margolyes revealed she expected to be a wheelchair soon.

“When you get old you become obviously aware of your vulnerability. I have a bad back, I’m probably going to be in a wheelchair soon and you have to come to terms with what life throws at you.”

"A bit weird": David Koch's new career move

Former Sunrise co-host David Koch has revealed a new career move a year after resigning from the breakfast TV show.

On Thursday, Koch was announced as the new chair of the South Australian Tourism Commission, the peak body promoting tourism to SA.

Koch is replacing Andrew Bullock, who has been the chair of the commission since 2019.

“A passionate South Australian and media professional, Kochie is a leading advocate for small business and a high-profile finance commentator,” the SATC said in a statement.

Koch, who was born in Adelaide but has been living in Sydney, said he won't be moving back to SA for the role.

Some South Australians questioned his high-profile appointment, as they believe that a local should've been chosen for the job.

"It's a little bit weird that he doesn't live in SA - that he's not living here but being the head of it," one said.

"It would be nice to have someone embedded in SA, living in SA, part of the community in SA as well," another added.

However, Premier Peter Malinauskas has defended the decision, citing Koch's national profile and financial expertise as a valuable aspect in advertising smaller businesses in the tourism sector.

"We as a state have punched above our weight in regards to tourism and hospitality but there is a lot more growth to be had," Malinauskas said.

As the chair, Koch will work alongside the SATC board to “set the strategic agenda for the commission”.

He will hold the role for three years from July 2.

“We do the best food and wine in the nation, and we have some of the nation’s most spectacular regions,” he said after his new role was announced.

“We also retain a reputation for delivering first class major events and festivals.

“More recently, the perceptions of Adelaide and South Australia have shifted significantly on the east coast – and we have an opportunity to capitalise on this momentum to grow our tourism sector even further.”

Image: Nine

Never say never: Ash Barty's surprising new career move

Ash Barty is set for a return to Wimbledon this year, but not in the way you'd expect.

The Aussie legend who retired from competitive tennis in 2022 at the age of 25, has been persistent about not returning to the court.

Since her retirement, she married her long-term partner Garry Kissick, and the pair welcomed their son Hayden in July 2023. She has also written some books and played a few golf tournaments around the world.

In November 2022, when promoting her memoir My Dream Time, Barty was asked if she’d ever consider a move into the commentary box, to which she replied: “No, never.”

But now, she is making her return into the spotlight, particularly the commentary box as she has been announced as part of the BBC’s team for Wimbledon.

“A host of Wimbledon champions will be joining the studio," BBC’s content boss Charlotte Moore said.

Barty will be joining Nick Kyrgios and former Aussie Wimbledon champ Pat Cash for the Summer of Sport event in London.

“This will include John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King and Pat Cash, alongside Tim Henman, Tracey Austin, Annabel Croft and Johanna Konta," Moore said.

“Joining the line-up this year will be 2021 champion Ashleigh Barty and, if he’s not playing, 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios, so anything could happen there.”

While her attitude towards taking a commentary role has changed, she has not changed her stance on making a comeback on the court.

“I don’t have the time – I don’t have the time to train, I don’t have the time to prepare, and I have so many great memories out on this court and now I just get to create new memories,” she said late last year.

“I’m certainly not coming out of retirement.”

Image: JONO SEARLE/EPA-EFE/ Shutterstock Editorial

Nick Kyrgios admits tennis career "may be over"

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is seriously considering retirement as he revealed that he is "at a crossroads" in his career.

In a column written for The Sydney Morning Herald, the 28-year-old said that despite his desire to compete at the highest level, he might never make it back to playing professional tennis.

He also said that he has enjoyed being away from the courts doing the media rounds.

"I sat down with my agent, Stuart Duguid, a couple of days ago to talk about my future," he wrote.

"The reality is, there is a part of me that knows my time in the sport may be over. And I'm OK with that.

"It's a conversation that needed to be had. I'm at a crossroads in my career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me."

He also added that despite knowing he can still compete for titles, his body is letting him down, as he continues to recover from his knee injury in January 2023.

"I sit there and watch some of the players on tour and know within myself that this generation is not as strong as some of the players I have gone up against," he wrote.

"I know I can be one of the best in the world and win major tournaments -- if my body lets me. The fire still burns, but it's not my everything."

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist also confirmed that he won't be making himself available for this year's Paris Olympics, saying that the treatment he got from the Australian Olympic Committee in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Games was one of the key factors.

"I was No. 13 at the time and had a genuine chance at winning a medal. For them to forbid me from representing my country for behavioural reasons is something that I just can't forget," he said.

He added that his "mentality has changed", and despite still having the desire to play for his country, his decision is final.

Kyrgios has barely been on court after withdrawing from last year's Australian Open, but he has been commentating on the tournament for Eurosport, adding that his future may be in the box, rather than on the court.

Image: Getty
