Queen Camilla pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth with a historic first

Queen Camilla has honoured her late mother-in-law with a special tribute at a royal engagement in London.

King Charles and Queen Camilla attended a reception at Mansion House in London on Wednesday evening, where the monarch called for unity amid increasing tensions over the conflict in Israel.

At the event, Queen Camilla donned Queen Elizabeth's favourite tiara for the first time in a subtle display of respect for the late monarch.

Camilla chose the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara for the event, which was worn by Queen Elizabeth regularly throughout her historic 70-year reign.

The diamond headpiece was first seen on Elizabeth II in the first official photographs of the new monarch, taken on February 26th 1952, just 20 days after her accession to the throne.

It was later worn during Her late Majesty's first visit to Australia in 1954, and became her most worn headpiece throughout her time as Queen.

Queen Camilla paired the tiara with two other of the late Queen's beloved pieces of jewellery, the South African diamond necklace and bracelet.

The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara originally belonged to Queen Mary, who received it as a gift in 1893.

It then came into Elizabeth II's collection in 1947 when Queen Mary gave it to her granddaughter as a wedding present.

At the royal event, King Charles gave a speech as he called for peace in Israel and Palestine, referring to himself "as King and as a father and a grandfather" as he appealed for calm.

He said, "I have often described the United Kingdom as a 'community of communities'; an island nation in which our shared values are the force which holds us together, reminding us that there is far, far more that unites us than divides us. Yet we are living in something of a watershed age."

"Do we pause, instinctively and unerringly, before speaking or acting to ensure we are affording equal weight to both sides of the balance? Our society would be a kinder and gentler place for it."

"Such understanding, both at home and overseas, is never more vital than at times of international turmoil and heart-breaking loss of life."

Queen DID refuse Meghan Markle's request for her wedding tiara

Finding Freedom, the eagerly awaited book about the British and Sussex royal family, has claimed that there was a disagreement between Meghan Markle and the Queen herself.

Meghan and the Queen disagreed about Markle's choice of wedding day tiara, but Meghan has blamed Her Majesty's personal dresser, Angela Kelly, for the disagreement.

At the time, it was reported that Meghan wanted to wear an emerald tiara, but the Queen had selected a diamond tiara worn by her grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1932 instead.

The authors of Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, claim that Prince Harry felt like Angela was dragging her feet while trying to help decide on what tiara to wear.

At the time of the row, The Queen is said to have told Prince Harry, according to a Royal insider: "Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets what tiara she's given by me."

"The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage", the insider alleged, adding that: "Meghan can be difficult".

Angela Kelly has worked with the Queen since 2002 and has risen quickly through the ranks to become her personal assistant and senior dresser.

Another book has claimed that Prince Harry was "petulant and short-tempered" in his book Charles At Seventy: Thoughts, Hopes and Dreams.

He allegedly told staff with a raised voice: "What Meghan wants, Meghan gets" and when reports of his "tiresome behaviour" reached the Queen who asked to see her grandson privately and she 'put him firmly in his place', Mr Jobson wrote.

However, Meghan said that the Queen Mary DIamond Bandeau was the "perfect" choice for her wedding as she spoke at an exhibition where the tiara was being displayed.

"When it came to the tiara on the day, I was very fortunate to be able to choose this gorgeous art deco style bandeau tiara.

"Harry and I had gone to Buckingham Palace to meet with Her Majesty The Queen to select one of the options that were there, which was an incredibly surreal day as you can imagine.

"And that was the one that, I think, as we tried them on, stood out."

Speaking about the tiara she eventually chose, she continued: "I think it was just perfect because it was so clean and simple - and also to that point, an extension of what Clare and I had been trying to do with the dress which was have something that could be so incredibly timeless but still feel modern."

Is Kate about to borrow Diana’s tiara?

Next week the Duchess of Cambridge is set to don a crown for the third time in her life. So one question remains, will she wear the beautiful Spencer Tiara?

On October 20 Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, will attend her first Buckingham Palace state banquet. Protocol will see the Duchess wear a tiara for the event.

While there are several pieces for Kate to choose from, rumours, or rather questions, have been flying around as to whether or not she will choose the beautiful Spencer Tiara. This is the heirloom piece that Kate’s late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, wore on her wedding day – and several times following. It is said to be the frontrunner for crown contenders.

Other options include the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, given to Diana by the Queen as a wedding gift in 1981 and now back in the royal collection. Or there’s the Cartier Halo Tiara that Kate wore on her wedding day and Princess Margaret’s Papyrus Tiara which Kate opted for when see attended a diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace in 2013.

But if pattern repeats itself – Kate’s engagement ring and outfits that she’s worn that pay homage to Diana – then we think it just might be the Spencer Tiara.

Related links:

Hilarious twin photos in matching outfits

8 things happy families have in common

How to raise happy healthy granddaughters
