"I need answers": Devastated widow vows to stage hunger strike

A woman who lost her husband and son in the devastating crash at a pub in Victoria last year has vowed to stage a protest, just days after the driver of the car was dismissed of all charges.

In November 2023, 66-year-old William Swale was behind the wheel of his BMW when he suffered a medical episode, crashing into the beer garden of The Royal Daylesford Hotel, killing five people.

Charges against Mr Swale were dropped on Thursday, after a magistrate ruled the evidence against him was “so weak”.

Mr Swale's lawyers successfully argued his actions were not voluntary because he was in a state of severe hypoglycaemia, as he is an insulin-dependent diabetic.

After hearing that the charges were dropped, Ruchi Bhatia, whose husband Vivek, their son Vihaan, 11, were killed as a result of the crash, says the ruling is as though she has lost them all over again.

Ruchi and her nine-year-old son were also injured in the crash, but survived after spending months in hospital.

Speaking for the first time since the deadly incident, Bhatia expressed her pain and said it feels like her life has been torn apart again, recalling the horrifying moment she woke in hospital to learn her husband and eldest son did not make it.

“Still today I don’t believe that they are not with me,” she told 7News.

“We were just having fun, we were outside, we were all together and the next moment they were gone and I’m never going to see them again.”

In court on Thursday, Magistrate Guillaume Bailin found the prosecution case was flawed and decided not to commit Swale to stand criminal trial, as all charges were dropped and Mr Swale walked out of court a free man.

Despite the ruling, Bhatia is demanding answers and says her fight for justice is far from over.

“He stopped the car in the middle of the road — why did he start his engine again? I need answers for that,” she said.

Bhatia and her family are planning to protest, which will include a hunger strike.

While Bhatia said she knew the protest wouldn't bring back her family, she said they needed justice to move on from the tragedy.

"Heartless": Widows told they cannot be buried next to their late husbands

A group of heartbroken widows in Perth have been told they cannot be buried next to their husbands in pre-purchased plots because of a technicality.

The women paid for the plots more than two decades ago when their partners passed away, but were never told the leases for the plots were only valued for 25 years.

Now, the local council has closed the cemetery and told the women they cannot be buried there next to their loved ones.

Sheila Goble, who was married to her husband Fred for 40 years before he died, said the council's decision was "heartless" and "nasty".

"Oh good grief, it's just nasty of the council, it really is, how can they do this to all the widows," Sheila told A Current Affair.

"He thinks we're going to be buried together there, it's heartless, it really is," Sheila said of her husband.

Prior to Fred's death, the couple has decided they wanted to be buried next to each other.

"We knew we were losing, and I said 'shall I go and buy a plot?', and he said 'yes'," she said.

That plot, as well as Sheila's, was purchased in 1998, for the pair to be buried side by side at Perth's East Rockingham Pioneer Cemetery.

The Governor of Western Australia then closed the ceremony in 2009, with the City of Rockingham then adopting a policy which allowed it to "provide persons who do not hold a Grant of Right of Burial", meaning a current lease, the right to be buried with family".

That policy was scrapped in April this year, and after Sheila's lease expired one year ago unbeknownst to her, she was told she could not renew it and had to find other burial plans.

"(They) told me I could dig my husband's marble grave stone up, I could dig my husband up at my expense, he mentioned, take him to the new cemetery which is about eight to ten kilometres away buy another plot and bury him there."

Gayle Parker's mother Lorna is experiencing the same plight, as she is also fighting for the pre-purchased plot next to her husband, as both widows claim they were never told about the 25 year lease.

"No one's been contacted, if they're saying, okay you should have renewed your lease or something, why didn't someone contact us and say that?" Gayle asked.

"Lets face it, Mum's 94, she's not going to be thinking in 25 years down the track after dad went 'oh hang on, I've got to go renew a lease' because they forget about it."

A social media post on the women's issues has attracted dozens of comments, and the City of Rockingham has confirmed it's aware of at least 20 other cases of people fighting for their pre-purchases plots.

The City of Rockingham issued a statement on the matter, saying, "Although the City is responsible for cemetery management - burial functions, including the issuing of grants, must comply with legislation, therefore there is no avenue for the City to grant an exemption or to permit a burial in these circumstances."

Because it is the Governor's closure it can only be rectified by our advice to the Governor, a potentially lengthy process that could leave widowers and families in limbo.

Gayle said it is hard to take in that her parents might not be buried together, while Sheila said she just "wants to be buried in a nice dress with a bottle of wine" next to her husband, who was buried with a beer.

How one widow has changed how women solo travel

After Yvonne Vickers' husband passed away in 2014, she thought her opportunities to travel and see the world had slipped away.

Yvonne had always been a keen traveller and went on trips with her married friends after becoming a widow, but she "got over being the third wheel", she admitted to 9Travel.

Still wanting to see the world on her own terms, Yvonne took to Facebook where she created a group seeking like-minded women who share her passion for adventure.

Now, the Find A Female Cruise or Travel Buddy is an ever-growing group that has connected thousands of women looking for travel companions.

Whether they're single, widowed, or just married to someone who doesn't want to travel, the group is open to women across the globe to join.

Thanks to her newfound community, Yvonne has taken 41 cruises and dozens of land trips since her husband's death, all while making friends for life, and the rest of the group's members are in the same boat.

"It's wonderful to get feedback from ladies saying that it's helped to change their life," Yvonne said. "That's the rewarding part of it for me."

Members can make a post in the group, detailing a cruise sailing or trip that they have their eye on booking, to see if anyone else would like to join them.

"We have a lot of widows in our group who are cashed up and want to travel but don't have anyone to travel with or share their experiences with," Yvonne said. "The group gives them the opportunity to be able to do that."

"There are also a lot of ladies who are married but their husbands don't want to travel. It gives them the opportunity to be able to travel."

Yvonne says that cruising is a perfect way for older females to travel, especially if they're on their own.

"It's a really safe way to travel as a solo female," she says, also noting that it's an easy way to get around and see places. Recently, she did a 35-day trip around Hawaii with a group of women from the group.

For the Find A Female Cruise or Travel Buddy group, there's even more fun trips on the horizon.

Yvonne just came back from a trip to Japan with 14 group members, and is heading to Bali in August with a friend she made through the group.

Image credits: Nine News \ Facebook

Widow "cranky" after Qantas denied late husband's points claim

A widowed grandmother has been left frustrated after Qantas refused to let her claim the 6,800 frequent flyer points in her late husband's account.

72-year-old Rhonda told Yahoo that she reached out to the airline after Brian - her husband of 52 years - passed away in May.

Rhonda hoped to claim his frequent flyer points, but was met with a brutal rejection letter instead.

While they offered their "sincere condolences", it also stated Qantas' "terms and conditions" didn't allow such a transfer, and Rhonda was asked to send through a copy of Brian's death certificate so they could close his account.

"I know it's not a lot of points but it's the principle of it because, damn, you get hardly anything out of it anyway," she told Yahoo.

"I just thought it would naturally come to me so, once I told them he passed away, I could've easily gone in and transferred them to myself without telling them but I wanted to do the right thing."

Four months later, Qantas announced that from October they would change their policy to allow next of kin to claim frequent flyer points.

When Rhonda heard about this, she reached out to the airline again.

"I immediately wrote back and said that, 'After hearing the news item, I was under the impression you were now looking at this'," she said.

"I haven't heard a word back since. I don't know if they're just ignoring me.

"I've just had enough," she added.

The grandmother-of-five added that she was "cranky" with the airline.

"Everywhere I turn there's a barrier, and what's 6,800 points to them?

"They are trying to keep their reputation intact and until I heard that announcement I was done with it. Now I still haven't heard and I am cranky about it," she concluded.

Fortunately, after Rhonda shared her complaints with the media, Qantas eventually credited her the points, although she remains unimpressed with the "ridiculous" process.

A Qantas spokesperson has also offered their sincere apologies to Rhonda.

"Our customer team have been in contact with her to advise that her husbands' points have now been transferred to her frequent flyer account," they said.

Rhonda said that she hopes to use the points for a holiday and explore the outback in the iconic The Ghan train next year.

Image: Daily Mail/ Getty

93-year-old widower with dementia to get kicked out of his home of 60 years

A widower with dementia has been told to pack up his belongings and leave his Brisbane home of 60 years to make way for a school drop-off zone.

Trevor Connolly, 93, had no plans on leaving his Coorparoo home in Brisbane's south-east, until a notification of resumption, also known as a compulsory acquisition letter, arrived in his mailbox in October with notice he needs to leave before Christmas.

The letter notified Connolly of the Department of Education's plans to forcibly acquire their home and build a new school.

The movement of the school is a knock-on effect of Brisbane's expansion plans to accommodate the hosting the 2032 Olympics.

The expansion is resulting in the demolition of the heritage-listed East Brisbane State School, which is being rebuilt on the site of the Coorparoo Secondary College.

Mr Connolly's home is the last domino to fall in the construction plans, having been designated to be demolished and turned into a drop-off zone for the new school.

The 93-year-old widower described the state's decision to acquire his home as "lunacy" and "madness", saying there are numerous other properties they could have chosen.

"You feel so useless, what can you do about it?" Connolly told 7News.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by 7NEWS Queensland (@7newsqueensland)

"There's no need to knock the house down, there's plenty of room next door."

He said the idea of moving out of the house he has called home for over half-a-century as "a heck of a change to even think about".

His daughter, Anne, didn't mince words when speaking about the state's Department of Education's plans, describing them as "quite brutal really, and insensitive".

Mr Connolly and the department are yet to enter negotiations into compensation for the widower's property, while a spokesperson for the Queensland Department of Education said, "Decisions to acquire land are not taken lightly."

"Entitled" widow sparks outrage over age pension question

An elderly widow has been slammed for writing in to a financial column asking for advice, despite being very well-off.

The 88-year-old (NOT pictured here) wrote in to Nine newspapers’ columnist Noel Whittaker asking for advice on how to access a pension after the death of her husband.

“My husband and I received a part pension but he passed away and I now have all the assets but no pension,” she wrote to Whittaker’s Ask Noel column.

“I am 88 and own my own home. I have $680,000 in savings and $180,000 in shares. My income is $25,000 p.a. is there anything I can do to get a part pension?”

While the question seemed innocent enough, many Aussies were infuriated by the woman's query, sparking outrage on social media.

One person pointed out how well off the woman was, mockingly saying, "We have $1m in assets. Can we get the age pension?”

Another person wrote, “Lady you’re 88, where are you getting 25k per year if not investments? You’ll be fine, Karen.”

The pile-on continued, with plenty more slamming the woman for being “entitled”, greedy, and mocking her for wanting even more money than she already had to spend over her remaining years.

One person added, “How much longer does this person think they’re going to live that they need more than $1 million …”

Another person offered their own advice if the last needed more money, encouraging her to use her $680,000 savings, saying "That's what it's there for."

Another person summed it up by writing, “The problem with old people these days is they’re too entitled. Back in my day, old people reused their tea bags and were grateful.”

Many even commented that the question was the exact kind of “fake” submission dreamt up for columnists to “enrage readers”, and someone posed their own mock question to Whittaker to point out how ludicrous the woman's question was.

“I own my own home, have 6 million ingots in assets, and my income is several gold bullion per month. I am 300 years old. I am a fire-breathing dragon. Can I claim the part pension?” they wrote.

“What am I going to do now?”: 77-year-old widow forced from her home

When Rosemarie Earley lost her husband, Eric Earley, she’d already suffered enough heartbreak to last a lifetime.

But her devastating situation wasn’t to end there, with the New South Wales government landing one more blow to the 77-year-old: she had to leave the home she and Eric had shared for almost 50 years.

Rosemarie and Eric had moved in to their Pendlebury Parade property in the ‘70s, establishing themselves as well-known and well-loved fixtures of the street.

However, it was their experience back then that seems to have caused Rosemarie’s present day trouble, with different rules and regulations surrounding whose name could be on the lease.

As Rosemarie explained to A Current Affair’s Hannah Sinclair, the paperwork was “in my husband's name. Eric Earley. The females had no say in the matter back in those days. Everything was in the husband's name because he was classed as the breadwinner. We were just housewives.”

Rosemarie and Eric had left England for a new and “better life for the family” in 1971, and were allocated their home by the government.

"When we moved in it was an empty shell,” she said. “There were no carpets, no window fittings, not even lightbulbs. No soil. So we had to buy soil.

“We bought a garage, we paid to have the gas connected, put the carpet [down] and everything else that was needed.

"We were under the impression we were buying because the paperwork said we had been approved to purchase.”

But this was not the case, as Rosemarie went on to explain. When their rent collector had dropped by, Eric had asked when the pair might be able to pay their deposit on the home, but was told they never would.

“We were actually told by the man that came and did the inspection a couple of weeks after we moved in that, 'this is your house, you can stay here till you die'. That was his words," she recalled.

It was a cruel reminder that Rosemarie was served in late 2022, when Eric passed away from heart failure at just 83 years old.

In the wake of her devastating loss, Rosemarie contacted the government and applied to be recognised as a tenant.

They had other ideas, and just a few months later, Rosemarie was informed the one level house with ramp access did not meet her needs anymore.

“I was so happy when I finally signed the paperwork to say that I could live here and it was now in my name,” she said, “and then six weeks later or so, I got the letter saying that this house no longer meets my needs.

"I don't understand why. Why couldn't they wait till my husband had been gone even 12 months, so that I would have acclimatised to being on my own? Why did it have to be four months?"

Rosemarie went on to admit that she thinks Eric would be “devastated” to know what she was going through without him, admitting that “that was his one worry, that I wouldn't get treated properly when he died and that's what's happened. I'm not getting treated properly."

"Can you believe that in 2023 as a woman you still don't have the same rights as your husband?

"I don't know. Why are they still going by those rules? Why haven't they adapted to the fact that life now is in two names? Husband and wife, or man and woman. A partner.”

Images: A Current Affair / Nine

Women get healthier after their husbands die

It’s a long held belief that a successful and happy relationship can be key to long-term good health. Research has shown that marriage has a protective effect on health, lowering the risk of heart attack and depression, and increasing the chance of surviving from cancer. A new study, however, by the University of Padova, Italy, which followed 733 Italian men and 1154 women for four and a half years found that while men suffer negative consequences when their wives die – because they rely more heavily on their spouses – women often appear to get healthier.

Dr Caterina Trevisan, the lead researcher on the study, thought that the results were due to women taking on more responsibilities in terms of household management and healthcare and thus more likely to feel stressed while married. There was also the generally accepted fact that, as women generally have a longer lifespan than men, they may also suffer from the effects of the care-giver burden, since they often devote themselves to caring for their husband in later life. Dr Trevisan said these factors may be behind the lower risk of depression in unmarried women.

The research also confirmed the long held belief that widows cope better than widowers after the death of a partner. Incidences of depression are found more commonly in men following the death of their partner while women appear less vulnerable to mental health issues then men, possibly due to greater coping resources and ability to express emotions.

Related links:

The crucial quality to look for in a life partner

The one person you shouldn’t be friends with on Facebook

A broken heart can be deadly

Heart broken widow speaks following the death of her husband

A heartbroken widow has opened up about her husband dying in her warms, while the couple waited over 40 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

Stewart Grant, aged 82, suffered breathing difficulties at 12:30 pm on January 29 at his Phillip Island home in Victoria, but paramedics were not dispatched immediately despite his family calling triple-zero.

His wife of more than 50 years, Carol Grant, said she was initially told no one was coming.

But a short time later, Mr Grant stopped breathing.

An operator called back 12 minutes after the initial conversation and counted with Ms Grant while she performed CPR on her husband.

“She asked me to get him out of bed, and put him on the floor, lie him on his back and to start CPR,” she said.

After the ambulance was finally dispatched, an alert system to find trained volunteers was initiated and three locals came to help.

“I’d just like to thank them for everything they tried to do. I’m just so grateful for their help as I couldn’t have continued (performing CPR),” Ms Grant said.

“Even though it wasn’t successful, I’m just so grateful to them for trying.”

Health Minister Martin Foley said the case was tragic, and told reporters on Thursday that there were issues with how the call was prioritised by the triple-zero call service ESTA.

“As I understand, the issue wasn’t so much the dispatch of the ambulance. The paramedics were there, other volunteers in the nearby community were there, once the call was distributed,” he said.

State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the case was horrifying and demanded an explanation from the government.

“If it’s the call-out and dispatch system, then it’s the government’s to manage ... It’s just not good enough to say it’s someone else’s fault. How the hell can this happen in Victoria in 2022?” he asked.

Premier Daniel Andrews sent his condolences and said the coroner would examine the tragedy.

“This pandemic has made the job of our ambos really tough, they’re all working as hard as they can and any time that a patient dies I know that that’s carried by our paramedics; they feel it very heavily,” he told reporters.

Ambulance Victoria has also sent its sincere condolences to the Grant family and said it had undertaken a review of the case.

Mr Grant’s case is not the only recent death in Victoria following a long wait for paramedics.

Victorian paramedics experienced their busiest quarter on record in the last three months of 2021. Data shows ambulances were called to 91,397 code-one cases during that period, a 16% increase on the same time in 2020.

Images: 7News

Letter from soldier delivered to widow after 76 years

After 76 long years, a heartfelt letter form the battlefield has finally been delivered.

Angelina Gonsalves received the letter in an unexpected delivery form the US Postal Service, which was written by her late husband while he was deployed overseas in 1945.

Written by 22-year-old Sergeant John Gonsalves while stationed in Germany, the soldier wrote the letter to his mother to check in on his family and let them know he was believed to be coming home to Massachusetts soon.

The letter was dated December 6th 1945, and was never delivered to his mother.

Instead, it was delivered to his widow 76 years and three days later.

"I got to read it and it was wonderful," Angelina Gonsalves, of Woburn, Massachusetts, told CNN on Wednesday. "It is in really good condition. I was amazed by that myself."

When John wrote the letter, he and Angelina has not yet met.

The pair married in 1953, eight years after the war, and had five sons together, before John died in 2015 at age 92.

In the two page letter to his mother, who shared the same name as his wife, John discusses the "lousy" options for food and the horrible winter weather, claiming where he was stationed has not seen the sun in weeks.

He closes the letter by sending love to his family, before signing and sealing the note and attaching a six cent stamp.

"It was a joy to see her face light up reading his words," Brian Gonsalves, Angelina and John's son, told CNN.

"To be able to see her read something he wrote and look back at that history, it's something she'll always have now."

It is unclear where the letter had been hiding all this time, but it was found at the USPS Pittsburgh processing centre late last year.

Dedicated employees at the centre understood the importance of the late soldier's letter, and started to track down John's next of kin to deliver the piece of history.

"We are aware of the passing of your husband in 2015 (our condolences)," reads a letter from the USPS, which was sent with John's letter.

"By virtue of some dedicated sleuth work by postal employees at this facility, we were able to determine your address, hence this letter delivery to you, albeit 76 years delayed. Due to the age and significance to your family history, delivering this letter was of utmost importance to us."

The letter was delivered to Angelina just before Christmas, which her son said made the perfect gift.

"It felt like he came back for the holiday season," he said.
