BREAKING: Coles and Woollies make huge vaccine announcement

Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths have announced that all of their employees must be vaccinated, or they will risk losing their jobs.

The new mandate dictates that any and all staff working for the supermarkets, whether their role is customer facing or not, must get the jab to continue working.

For Woolworths, this encompasses its 170,000-strong workforce, who work across its 1,200 retail outlets, Big W, warehouse and distribution centres, and offices.

Coles has around 112,000 employees nationwide, and must also adhere to the the new vaccine mandate.

Woolworths staff in NSW, Victoria, ACT, WA and NT will have to be fully vaccinated by January 31st 2022, while Woolies employees in other states will have until March 31st 2022 to get the jab.

For Coles workers however, employees in NSW, ACT, NT, WA and Victoria will have to get their first jab by November 5th, and their second before December 17th.

The supermarkets have made their decision in a nationwide attempt to protect staff and customers and two of Australia's biggest states begin to lift lockdown restrictions.

Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci said the mandate for “all of our team members in Australia” came after a “careful review” of medical advice.

“With each store welcoming an average 20,000 customers a week, a single team member can come into contact with quite literally thousands of people in the course of a normal working week,” he said.

“Importantly, we have been listening to our team members. With states and territories at different levels of vaccination uptake and availability, we will engage with them further on our roadmap and implement a sensible and pragmatic timeframe for the requirement to come into effect.”

Woolworths' group chief medical officer Rob McCartney said a vaccinated worker is less likely to catch Covid, pass it on to customers or become seriously ill.

“There is a clear and compelling case for a vaccination requirement to provide the safest possible work environment for all our team members,” McCartney said. “This is particularly important as restrictions ease and we see higher rates of transmission.”

The supermarket group has said it will allow exemptions for those who have religious or medical grounds to not get the jab.

However, if a legitimate exemption cannot be provided, a worker will likely lose their job, a Woolworths spokesperson told Yahoo Finance.

"If a team member chooses not to be vaccinated without a valid exemption, we’ll review their ongoing employment and it will likely lead to termination."

"Everyone has a right to their personal choice, and we respect that, but we have an obligation to make the workplace as safe as possible and that's what this policy is all about."

"A horror movie": Woman's shock at unwanted guest in purchase

A Woolworths customer has found the funny side to a very disturbing find in her gingerbread house.

Shopper Katie explained to Facebook that she found a massive huntsman, complete with egg sac, in a readymade gingerbread house that was purchased from her local supermarket.

“Wait Woolworths, this isn’t what I ordered?” laughed Katie.

“Only in Australia, only in #2020.

“Buy a readymade gingerbread house they said, it’ll be easier than building one they said!

“Seriously I don’t say this often but: why me?”

She then described how she found it in the packaging.

“It was like a horror movie,” she said.

“I was making myself a cup of tea, I glanced up at the gingerbread house thinking, ‘Hmmmm I wonder if I can sneak a piece off without the kids noticing.’

“Then I saw it, the tip ... of a leg, and then another leg and then another, and then the body, carrying a mother trucking egg sac.

“I’m done!”

People were disgusted with the find.

“Are you SERIOUS? It’s INSIDE THE BOX,” wrote one.

“OMG! Complete with egg sac so it’s been in there a long while!”

Katie said she moved the spider outside, and a Woolworths representative apologised for the "scary surprise".

“Oh no Katie - this critter just wanted a home, but this is definitely not the right one for her!” the representative said.

“Thanks for letting us know, and we apologise for the scary surprise. After all, it’s Christmas, not Halloween.

“Please feel free to return the gingerbread house to our store service desk for a replacement - one without an added houseguest!”

Coles VS Woolies VS ALDI: Who wins the supermarket price war?

The pandemic has meant that people are looking for savings where they can, including their grocery shopping.

One of the best places to save some extra cash is the supermarket, and consumer group CHOICE has confirmed whether Coles, Woolworths or ALDI offer the best prices with a survey of 152 products.

CHOICE found that ALDI was on average 20 per cent cheaper than Coles or Woolworths.

“We were surprised that there was such a discrepancy,” says Margaret Rafferty, managing editor of CHOICE.

“I think in some products you could save up to 50 per cent more by shopping at Aldi.”

15 items were at least 35 per cent cheaper.

ALDI was thrilled with the news.

“From somebody as credible as CHOICE, it’s a great reassurance to us and our customers that we’ve got the best price,” said Andrian Christie, Aldi’s customer interactions director.

ALDI also took out the most categories in CHOICE's home brand comparison last month, taking top spot for best tomato sauce and best tea.

However, if you don't have an ALDI nearby, you can still save money at Coles or Woolworths.

“There were a few (items) where Coles and Woolies were cheaper. It wasn’t universal,” Rafferty said.

For example, sweet treat Clinkers cost $1.74 per 100g at ALDI but only $1.67 at Coles and Woolworths.

The best advice to follow is to look at the cost per amount.

“Just look at the unit pricing. Compare that and that will tell you if you’re getting the best price,” says Christie.

This little-known Woollies hack can save you hundreds

An eagle-eyed Woolworths shopper has revealed a relatively unknown hack that can save hundreds off your Christmas shopping food bill.

The hack was shared on a popular Facebook page, with one shopper showing that Woolworths Rewards members have the option to bank their savings until later in the year.

“Just in case you didn’t know, you can bank all your [Woolworths Rewards] savings for Christmas time,” wrote one Woolies shopper on the Markdown Addicts Australia page.

“When you get [money] from your Rewards card, you can bank it until December when it will become available. A little saving tip for that crazy Christmas time.”

Users of the Woolworths rewards card are thrilled with the option, with some already cashing in on the savings.

“It’s so good, I have $200 for Christmas so far,” said one.

Added another: “We have $600.”

Benefiting from the savings is easy as you simply change the settings when you select "Bank for Christmas" in "redemption settings" under "my account".

The change is even easier to do if you're using the Woolworths Rewards app, as your preference is shown under the welcome banner on the home screen.

Outrage at sneaky packaging symbol that short-changes customers

A Woolworths customer’s complaint over the amount of beef mince in a packet has brought public attention to a little known code that is commonly found on supermarket products.

The supermarket says that it’s not to blame for the error, despite knowledge of the code being a revelation for many.

Queensland mum Mandy Smith purchased a 500g package of beef mince from her local Woolworths store recently and paid $7.50 for the packet.

When Mandy weighed the meat on her scale at home, she discovered that the mince weighed just 262g and took to Facebook to voice her outrage.

“Seriously Woolworths … I have been buying this mince like this for a while, and not cheap due to trying to cut out fat. I weighed it today and there is less than 300 grams in a supposed 500g pack!” she wrote.

“I paid $7.50 for 500 grams and got this! And yes my scales are fine I use them daily by (the) way. How many people are you ripping off (by) including the packaging weight?”

It has since been pointed out that supermarkets put a letter “e” next to the weight on products, which surprisingly stands for estimate.

It’s called the “average quantity system”, and according to the National Measurement Institute (NMI), IT’S “an internationally agreed method of determining the size or quality of prepacked articles with ‘consistent normal content’”.

“This means it provides confirmation of the measurement or quantity of goods in the package, being sold by measure,” the NMI website reads.

“AQS provides a 97.5 per cent assurance that goods are the correct quantity within the prescribed tolerances.”

A Woolworths spokesman told news.com.au that the company took Mandy’s claim seriously.

A Woolworths spokesman told news.com.au the company took Ms Smith’s claim seriously.

“We want our customers to shop with the confidence they’re getting what they’re paying for,” the spokesman said.

“We’re aware of the customer’s claim and have been looking into it with our meat production partner.

“We have a range of checks and balances in place throughout production to help ensure our products comply with trade measurement.”

It has also advised customers who are concerned about the weight of a product to return the item for a refund.

Jump the queue in Woollies thanks to this little known hack

Time-poor customers will be over the moon with Woolworth’s latest queue jumping hack that allows them to pay for their items as they make their way through stores.

Woolworths have introduced a new scheme called Scan&Go, which has since been rolled out in ten stores across Sydney.

After a successful trial in Sydney’s Double Bay store, many have trialled the scheme and labelled it “exciting”.

"The customer feedback on Scan&Go has been pleasing, with repeat usage of the app high. This speaks to the growing demand for quick and easy shopping experiences in our busy lives,” a Woolworths spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.

The scheme involves shoppers downloading the Scan&Go app from the App Store or Google Play and registering payment details into the app.

Customers then go around scanning items on their phone as they put them into their bags before tapping off at a designated kiosk. This can shave minutes off shopping times for those who are too busy to stand in line.

Woolworths Group Head of Payments and Financial Services Paul Monnington said that the scheme is aimed at customers who lead busy lives.

The 10 stores operating the scheme across Sydney are Double Bay, Mona Vale, Miller Junction, Chullora, Pitt Street, Met Centre, York Street, George Street, Manly and Strawberry Hills.

However, there are no concrete plans to roll out the scheme across the country.

"We're continuing to explore opportunities to expand Scan&Go to more stores, but have no firm plans at this time,” they said.

Meet the woman who knits woolly hats for homeless greyhounds

Meet Jan Brown or as she is popularly known, “Knitty Jan”. She runs an online store called Knitted With Love, which sells a range of hand-knitted doggy hats and coats.

Five years ago, the 52-year old from Sunderland in the UK began knitting coats to raise money and awareness for greyhound rescues. She has now hand-knitted over 300 jumpers for abandoned dogs. Each one can take up to 20 hours to complete, but one things is for sure: they are all made with love.

She quit her job in 2012 to start knitting full-time and set up her shop, where a percentage of her profits go toward greyhound rescue charities, the site's Facebook page states.

“I can’t think of anything I would rather do than knit woolly clothing for dogs,” Jan says. “I have spent over 4,000 hours knitting but it’s all worthwhile when I see them sporting their new jumpers and hats.”

“It’s really sweet seeing them in their festive Christmas jumpers and it’s giving much needed help to the rescue centres,” she adds, explaining, “Greyhounds have very thin fur so they really feel the cold during the winter so my gifts help keep them warm during walks.”

Related links:

Baby goat learns to hop by copying human friend

Meet 121-year-old Corduroy, the world’s oldest cat

15 unlikely friendships that will melt your heart

Woolly sheep get first clip in several years

Last Thursday, RSPCA ACT found a woolly sheep wandering near Canberra. The unnamed sheep has apparently avoided capture and shearing for several years.

The RSPCA was concerned as the years of unshorn fleece could pose a health risk to the sheep itself.

"There could be infections, flystrike, [the coat] could prevent him from going to the bathroom. There could be a really nasty thing under that coat but we won't know that until we get there," RSPCA ACT boss Tammy Ven Dange said, according to the Canberra Times.

A shearer was called for but with a task like this, only the best would do. Shearing championship winner and Australian Shearers Hall-of-Famer, Ian Elkins, answered the call for help and the long process began. The RSPCA confirmed the weight of the shorn fleece weighed to more than 40 kilograms.

We hope the previously woolly mammoth is enjoying his new look!

Crazy day to shear a sheep with the whole world watching.
