Salman Rushdie announces novella in unusual form

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie, author of the controversial book The Satanic Verses, has announced he will be writing his next book on the newsletter platform Substack.

The newsletter is called Salman’s Sea of Stories in a reference to his 1990 novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and will be where his new book The Seventh Wave will be published, along with short stories, essays and other works.

Speaking to The Guardian, Rushdie revealed that The Seventh Wave totals at 35,000 words and is about a “film director and an actor slash muse written in the style of New Wave cinema”.

According to his website, most of his work will be free to access.

However, a paid subscription is needed to access additional works, including The Seventh Wave, which will be released in weekly instalments.

“The point of doing this is to have a closer relationship with readers, to speak freely, without any intermediaries or gatekeepers,” his website reads.

“There’s just us here, just you and me, and we can take this wherever it goes. I hope you’ll enjoy the ride. I’ll try to make it fun.”
