5 biggest blunders on live TV

Live TV has brought us some amazing moments, from the Olympics to the Royal Wedding. Unfortunately, with live TV comes the possibility for some catastrophic blunders. Here are 5 of the most unforgettable live TV mistakes we’ve ever seen. The pictures above correspond to the list below.

Steve Harvey announces the wrong winner of Miss Universe 2015

Beauty pageants have provided us with some memorable TV moments (see below), but US host Steve Harvey will go down in history for this mistake. At last year’s ceremony, he incorrectly crowned Miss Columbia as Miss Universe, discovering just minutes later he’d made a huge error – Miss Philippines was the true winner.

Miss South Carolina’s answer at the 2007 Miss Teen USA pageant

Ok, we admit that being put on the spot in front of thousands is a hard thing to endure. However, Miss South Carolina’s bumbled response to the Q & A section of the pageant has been parodied hundreds of times for its incoherence. The beauty queen was asked what she thought one fifth of Americans couldn’t locate the US on a map. Her reply is unforgettable.

John Travolta at the 2014 Academy Awards

In 2014, John Travolta had the honour of introducing famed theatre performer Idina Menzel to perform “Let It Go” from the hit film Frozen. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite get her name right. In fact, he got it very wrong indeed, calling her “Adele Dazeem”. The actor certainly had a sense of humour about it all, returning this year to present an award with Menzel, deliberately enunciating her name properly.

Ashley Simpson’s lip-sync fail on Saturday Night Live

Simpson’s performance (or lack thereof) on a 2004 episode of Saturday Night Live is well-known as one of the worst live TV mistakes ever. On the show to perform two songs, when she began to sing “Autobiography” the vocals for the first song were accidentally played again, revealing she had been lip-syncing. Simpson received a lot of backlash and the incident essentially ended her career.

Sarah Murdoch announces the wrong winner of Australia’s Next Top Model

Before Steve Harvey there was our very own Sarah Murdoch. The host of Australia’s Next Top Model made headlines around the world when she announced the wrong winner of the show in 2010. Murdoch said she was fed the wrong name through her earpiece and announced Kelsey Martinovich as the winner, when in fact it was Amanda Ware who should have been crowned. As compensation, the two were able to split their Harper’s Bazaar cover and both received cash.
