Fun outdoor activities to enjoy this summer

There are plenty of benefits of getting outdoors even for a short period of time. Firstly, soaking up some sunlight generates Vitamin D, which is necessary for the brain, bones and muscle function and can also improve cognitive function.

Regardless of the level of intensity, any outdoor activity is generally going to be good for you mentally and physically, helping keep you alert and put a spring in your step. And being outside is a great enabler for socialising and interacting with others.

Here’s a few ideas for outdoor activities to put on the list.

1. Catch a sporting event – Even if it’s only spectating and cheering from the sidelines, getting out to a match or event can get you feeling involved, animated and alive. It might be watching a grandchild's cricket game or attending your local football teams match – grab your club colours and start barracking.

2. Be a tourist – If you live in a city, take an open-air bus or walking tour to see the sights. Even in your own town, you’ll probably be surprised how many new and interesting things there are to discover.

3. Take a dip – It may just be a gentle wade in the pool, the group fun of low-impact water aerobics, doing laps or even an invigorating jump in the surf. Whatever your choice, water-based exercise is always good for the soul during summer.

4. Go for a ride – Pull out your old bike from the garage, borrow one from a friend or even rent one for a try if you’re a bit rusty on two wheels. There are plenty of community-based riding clubs and events to try out, whether you’re after a leisurely cruise or something a bit more challenging. These days you can also enjoy the best of both worlds with electric bikes which you can ride like a normal bike while also taking advantage of a bit of extra assistance if you find the hills a bit too demanding.

5. Go fly a kite – Head to a park or beach and get a kite soaring just like you did during those childhood summers. Use it as a reason for an outing with the grandchildren – you’ve probably got a few tricks and tips you can pass on to them about a traditional old-school activity and source of endless fun.

6. Picnic outdoors – Picnics are another great outdoor activity. Pack a special hamper, invite the family and friends and enjoy the social interaction along with the fresh air, good food and maybe a bit of a stroll while you’re there.
