The one thing every home needs in an emergency
It’s everyone’s worst nightmare – to wake up in the middle of the night to a smoke alarm or find your home flooded one morning. When these things happen, you need to get out fast. And, if it’s safe to do so, there’s one thing you need to grab before you leave – your “go bag”.
What is a “go bag” exactly? It’s a pack filled with all the essentials you need to keep you safe and comfortable if you won’t be able to return home for a few days, saving you crucial moments if you attempted to gather supplies during an evacuation.
There should be one “go bag” for each member of the household, catered to their needs, and they should be stored together in a safe place near an exit. Here’s what should be inside:
1. Basic electronics – A torch with long-life batteries (plus extra), a portable charger and a small battery-operated radio.
2. Personal items – What are your everyday essentials? Think glasses, toiletries and about three days’ worth of your prescription medications. A first aid kit and multi-purpose tool that can also act as a can opener are also a must.
3. Clothing – In addition to bras, undies and socks, lightweight layers are your best bet, but you should also include light rain gear and waterproof footwear.
4. Important documents – Make copies of your birth, marriage or citizenship certificates, driver’s licence, Medicare details, proof of address, bank details, power of attorney and will, and enclose them in a waterproof zip-lock bag.
5. Food and drink – You don’t need to pack your whole kitchen, just some bottled water, small, filling snacks (like nuts and energy bars) and any canned foods you can fit.
6. Money – In an emergency, chances are your credit card won’t do you much good. Ensure you have enough cash for a few days, plus coins in case you need to use a vending machine.
